    Howard Gardner and his Theory

The Theory of Multiple Intelligences was developed in 1983 by Dr. Howard Gardner, professor atHarvard University. The theory describes the concept of intelligence and suggests that people have

    multiple abilities to learn.

Howard Gardner's Multiple Intelligences Theory was first published in Gardner's book Frames Of

Mindin1983. It quickly became a classical model by which to understand and teach many aspects of

human intelligence, learning style, personality and behaviour - in education and industry. Howard

Gardner initially developed his ideas and theory on multiple intelligences as a research in

psychology. But Gardner's theory was soon accepted by education, teaching and training

communities. They believed that Gardner had created a perfect learning model.

Howard Gardner was born in Pennsylvania in 1943 to German immigrant parents, and entered

Harvard in 1961. He was first interested in history, but then moved to social relations, which

included psychology, sociology and anthropology. There he met his early mentor Erik Erikson.

Later Gardner was influenced by psychologists Jean Piaget, Jerome Bruner, and philosopher Nelson

Goodman. Later in 1967, Gardner founded 'Project Zero' and the co-founder was Nelson Goodman.

This project focuses on studies of artistic thought and creativity. Project on Human Potential

carried out in 1970s was a basis for Gardner's multiple intelligences ideas. He was the first to

express how we should judge others according to the narrow definition of intelligence.

Gardner has received honorary degrees from at least twenty foreign institutions, and has written over

twenty highly regarded books on the human mind, learning and behaviour. How ironic is that

Gardner, who has contributed so much to the understanding of people and behaviour was born

cross-eyed, myopic, colour-blind and unable to recognise faces. He speaks about this in his brief

auto-biographical paper 'One Way to Make Social Scientist', which he wrote in 2003. So, there is

    hope for us all!

In autumn 2009 the Research and Evaluation Department of the Ministry of Health of Romania,

conducted a research on smoking habits of schoolchildren population. The research was conducted

in 107 schools from both urban and rural areas of Romania. The schools which were selected for the

research were the state schools only, i.e. the schools funded from the state budget. The schools were

randomly selected by the Ministry of Education. The research was funded by the government, which

wants to make Romania A Nation of Non-Smokers.Both boys and girls between the age of 15 and 18 were selected as a target population for the

research. This is the age when young people actively imitate the adults and start to experiment with

smoking cigarettes. The number of respondents altogether was 3,700 schoolchildren. The

questionnaire contained basic questions on smoking behavior, such as: At what age did you try

your first cigarette? , Why did you try it and with whom?, etc. Interviewing of the school children

took one month, and the analysis and preparation of the final report took another month. The aim of

the research was to point out the main reasons why teenagers in Romania start to smoke.

The research showed that the majority of the respondents - 46.4% - said that they started to smoke in

order to relax; 22.3% responded - out of curiosity and 31.3% of the respondents named various

reasons including to feel more grown up, to be like teachers, or family members. The boys and

girls answers to the question: Why did you start to smoke? did not differ much.

The research showed that the critical age for starting smoking is the age 15. So, special programmes

should be developed to educate schoolchildren about the harmful effect of smoking between the

ages of 15-18, when young people easily fall under other peoples influence. The Romanian

research has shown that the father is the leading figure in giving the example. Education

programmes should therefore also aim at parents and explain to them their role in this problem. The

research results would provide valuable information to develop a relevant and effective national

    anti-smoking programme for teenagers.

    Sudbury school

Sudbury school, in the USA, has the teaching policy which believes that students should

individually decide what to learn, when and how. Sudbury school followers do not believe in any

kind of national curriculum. According to them, students should be responsible for their own

education and the school should be run by certain democratic rules. This means that in this school

students and teachers are equal. According to Sudbury school model, some children learn at an

earlier age and others at an older age, some learn faster, others slower. These differences make

    each child unique.

Sudbury school authorities believe that there are many reasons why children have difficulty in

learning. This mainly happens because the subjects taught at school are not interesting for a child.

Sudbury school says that there are many ways to study and learn without a teacher being strict and

demanding. They believe that in the case of reading, for instance, in Sudbury school some children

learn better when teachers read to them or when they learn stories by heart. Only after this they can

read independently. Children can learn differently: some from reading street signs, others from

listening to game instructions, etc. In Sudbury, the schoolchildren are neither asked nor forced to

learn how to read or write, and yet the children from this school do not have difficulty in learning.

They say that they do not have students who dont know how to read and write. They also say that in

this school students learn different subjects with the same methodology and techniques. Theteachers are minor - not important - actors. The teacher is only an adviser and helps pupils just

when they need the help. Children raised by this method do not suffer from learning disabilities and

    no additional support is needed.

grade students, aged 14-15. This is the age when students

finish the secondary education and get prepared for high school. The number of students who tookpart in the research was 764. An equal number of boys and girls participated in the research. They

had to complete competence tests in the four above-mentioned subjects. Each subject test had one

hundred items. The items were of different difficulty: easy, not very difficult, difficult and very

difficult. The test was computer based and strictly time limited. Testing of the students took only 3

weeks but analyzing the tests results and preparing the final report took four months.

    Learning styles and visuals

We all take information and learn in different ways. One way of thinking about learning styles is

through VAK. The VAK learning style model says that people can be divided into three groups and

each of these groups have their own learning style.

Students with a Visual learning style prefer to learn by means of seeing things, such as pictures,

diagrams, demonstrations, displays, handouts, films, etc. The people with a visual learning style are

able to perform a new task after they read the instructions themselves or watch someone do the task

first. They like to work from written directions and instructions.

Students with an Auditory learning style prefer to learn by means of listening to the informationrather than reading it. They feel happy when somebody gives spoken instructions directly or over

the telephone. These kinds of learners can easily remember the words of the songs they hear.

Students with a Kinaesthetic learning style prefer to learn from physical experience, such as -

touching, holding, doing and practical hands-on touch. The students will be best able to do a new

task by experimenting or physically trying it out. In this case they can learn very easily. These kinds

of learners like experiments and never look at the instructions first.

Your students learning styles are just one reason why visual aids are important. The other important

point is that visuals are just sometimes the easiest way to help them understand the meaning. In

order to increase the visual impact, a teacher uses pictures, graphs and colours, decorates the

classroom with students work and posters, and makes a board more attractive. Also a video and a

film help students to see how meaning is conveyed. It is important for a teacher to have a variety of

visual aids, so that he or she has a good contact with all students.

Education, conducted a research on the use of the Internet among high-school students, aged

16-18. The research was conducted in 78 schools from both rural and urban areas of Latvia. The

schools which were selected for the research were from state schools only, i.e. from the schools

which receive funds from the State. The research was funded by the Global Network.

The focus group contained high school students exclusively. This is the age when students

extensively use the Internet both for entertainment and educational purposes. The number of

students who took part in the research was 754. An equal number of boys and girls participated in

the research. They had to answer a number of questions, such as: Do you use computer at home orat school? How many hours a day do you use the Internet? What websites do you usually visit?

etc. Interviewing the students took three weeks but analyzing the study results and preparing the

    final report took two months.

The research showed that in spite of the projects done by the education authorities, students from

rural area still have less access to the Internet compared to those students who live in urban areas.

80% of the students living in the rural areas of the country do not have computers at home and they

have limited access to computers at school due to their small number. The research did not show any

difference in use of the Internet between boys and girls.

The research showed that students use the Internet mostly for communication purposes: 50% of the

students use the Internet specifically for sending or receiving e-mails and connecting with friends,

35% of the students use the Internet for playing games and only very few (15%) of students use the

    Internet for educational purposes.

Two main recommendations were that 1. the Ministry of Education should further increase the use

of the Internet as a tool for education and 2. teachers should encourage students to widely use the
