Intelligent Mobility and Intelligent Transport Systems
1
Overview
Intelligent Mobility can refer to in-vehicle intelligence, vehicle-to-vehicle
(V2V) intelligence and vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) intelligence. An
intelligent transport system should put the traveller at the heart of a co-
ordinated transport network to ensure the most efficient end-to-end travel
experience.

The Cambridge Transport Research Group has been investigating the
dynamics of heavy goods vehicles, their road-damaging characteristics as
well as their safety, productivity and fuel consumption. The group is
unusual in its cross-disciplinary approach, investigating projects spanning
areas from heavy vehicle dynamics, safety and suspension design; to
weigh-in-motion, vehicle-road interaction and the failure mechanisms of
asphalt pavements and paving materials.
A substantial proportion of the work is concerned with the dynamics,
safety, productivity and CO2 emissions of heavy vehicles. This work is
undertaken with industrial partners from the Cambridge Vehicle Dynamics
Consortium (CVDC).

Cranfield University’s Automotive Research Department has several
research themes of interest. Most notably are:
Automotive Mechatronics.
Propulsion, fuels, hybrid vehicles and combustion.
Automotive Mechatronics combines elements of Mechanical, Electronic
and Applied Control Engineering to develop ways of dealing with newly
forming automotive issues, such as emissions and fuel consumption. Their
current research projects include:
Vehicle electrification and control system development (inc. for
EVs and Hybrids, active chassis systems and active safety).
Integrated vehicle dynamics and control.
Physical system modelling with the use of bond graphs.
Multivariable robust controls.
Their work is carried out at the dedicated Automotive Mechatronics
Centre.
The Propulsion, Fuels, Hybrid Vehicles and Combustion theme includes
projects such as Intelligent Energy and Power Management, which look at
developing intelligent methods of increasing fuel efficiency or endurance.
In the Aeromechanical Systems Department of the University, there is the
Intelligent Propulsion and Emissions Laboratory. Work that is undertaken
here is conducted with an eye towards the Defence sector, however some
research is transferrable. For example, one of their most recent projects
looks at driverless vehicles.

The ISRC is dedicated to the creation of intelligent computational systems,
taking inspiration and learning from biology and neuroscience. The work of
the Centre is directed at achieving a greater understanding of biological
signal processing and the translation of critical aspects of that knowledge
into computational systems that can perform in a way humans would
consider "intelligent". They seek to research and create systems that are
capable of learning, evolving, adapting, self-organising and communicating
effectively with humans and other machines. They anticipate intelligent
computational systems that can learn from experience, adapt
autonomously to unanticipated situations, self-organise to meet current
demands and evolve over time to exhibit greater functionality in line with
changing environments.
The activities of the Centre are focused on research into computational
intelligence and the emulation of brain signal processing. They work on
perception, reasoning, cognitive robotics, brain-computer interfacing,
intelligent embedded systems, intelligent wireless sensor networks,
intelligence in serious computer games, self-repairing hardware and
software, and intelligent multimedia.

Transport Systems Catapult
The Transport Systems Catapult is one of seven government centres set
up through the £200million Catapult initiative. The Catapult is currently
under development, with an expected launch date towards the end of
2013. The Catapult will aim to bring together companies across the
transport modes and industries involved in transport systems to work
together collaboratively to tackle issues facing the UK’s transport systems.
Solutions developed will then be exported to the rest of the world to the
benefit of UK Plc.
The most up to date information on the development of the Transport
Systems Catapult can be found at the dedicated _connect website:

The EU is leading the way in creating a pan-European approach to ITS
deployment. A new legal framework ( Directive 2010/40/EU) was adopted
on 7 July 2010 to accelerate the deployment of innovative transport
technologies across Europe. This Directive is an important instrument for
the coordinated implementation of ITS in Europe. It aims to establish
interoperable and seamless ITS services while leaving Member States the
freedom to decide which systems to invest in. You’ll find relevant
