“OUGH” What a Story!

By Glenn Gipson

Once upon a time there was an English student

who thought that he could find enough tough dough

to fill his borough. He sought for it everywhere. When he went to the store he bought as

much as he could. While on vacation he brought back some from the neighboring cities.

Things were getting rough, and although he had a cold and a bad cough, he still

managed to plough through the winter as though he were well. He continued his search.

He fought long and hard. He wrought night and day in his endeavor for enough tough

dough. Finally, after many months he thought that his thorough search ought to come to

an end. And one day it did, when by chance he came upon a very old tree. Next to the

tree was an old horse trough. And on the boughs of the tree he saw enough tough dough

to fill his borough. The end!

Malala Yousafzai wins Nobel Peace Prize

The 17-year-old girls' rights activist Malala Yousafzai has been awarded the Nobel Peace

Prize for 2014. She was one of two Nobel laureates to be declared winners this year. The

other is Kailash Satyarthi, who campaigns for children's rights. Malala was given the

accolade exactly two years and a day after a Taliban gunman shot her in the head on her

school bus.

Following her recovery in a British hospital, Malala has toured the world speaking up

for the rights for girls to receive an education. She once told reporters that going to

school, "is like walking through a magic door to your dreams". Malala becomes the

youngest ever recipient of the prize and the second Pakistani to scoop the award*.

The Nobel Committee said Ms Yousafzai and Mr Satyarthi won the prize, "for their

struggle against the suppression of children and young people and for the right of all

children to education."

Pakistan's Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif

congratulated Malala, calling her the "pride of

Pakistan". He said: "She has made her countrymen

proud. Her achievement is unparalleled and

unequalled." He urged all children to follow her lead.

Mr Satyarthi told Al Jazeera that his award was for

the "many voices of children who are victims of

servitude…across the world". He added: "The Nobel

Committee regards it as an important point for a

Hindu and a Muslim, an Indian and a Pakistani, to

join in a common struggle for education."

* Correction: Pakistani Abdus Salam won the 1979 Nobel Prize in Physics, not the Peace

Prize.

All of Me (John Legend)

Find and correct one mistake in

each of the bold lines:

What would I do without your smart

mouth?

Drawing me in and he kicking me

out

You've got my head spinning, no

kidding,

I can't pin you now

What's going on in that beautiful mind

I'm on your magical mystery ride

And I'm too dizzy, don't know what

hit me,

But I'll be alright

My head's under water

But I'm breathing fine

You're crazy and I'm out of your

mind

'Cause all of me

Loves all of you

Love your curves and all your edges

All your perfect imperfections

Give your all to me

I'll give my all to you

You're my aim and my beginning

Even when I lose I'm winning

'Cause I give you all of me

And you give me all of you, oh

How many times do I have to tell you

Even while you're crying you're

beautiful too

The world is beating you down,

I'm around through every mood

You're my downfall, you're my muse

My best distraction, my rhythm and

blues

I can't stop singing, it's ringing, in my

head for you

My head's under water

But I'm breathing fine

You're noisy and I'm out of my mind

'Cause all of me

Loves all of you

Above your curves and all your

edges

All your perfect imperfections

Give your all to me

I'll give my all to you

You're my end and my beginning

Even when I choose I'm winning

'Cause I give you all of me

And you give me all of you, oh

Give me all of you

Cards on the label, we're both

showing hearts

Risking it all, though it's hard

'Cause all of me

Loves all of you…

Part 3 Reading, Listening and

Pronunciation

Reading activities

Read the text:

Hybrids: Reading

Perhaps Nathaniel was the only person that thought the birth of a liger at the

local zoo last spring was a bad thing. The newspapers were certainly giving it a lot of

attention, and photos of the cub appeared on every front page. It was undoubtedly cute,

and blissfully unaware of the fuss surrounding its birth. The zoo was definitely happy as

many more people were paying to visit and see the creature for themselves; more people

had been to the zoo in one week than in the previous three months. There was also a

competition to name the animal – schools had encouraged their pupils to enter with

suitable suggestions, and the local radio music station wanted someone to write a song to

commemorate the event.

So, why was Nathaniel the only one

put out at the time? And what exactly is a

liger?

“I’m not against zoos really,”

Nathaniel explained, “I can see that they

have an important role in helping to

preserve certain endangered species or to

educate the public. I understand that for

many people, zoos give them the

opportunity of seeing wild and exotic

animals for real, and this can be very

exciting. Also most zoos are much healthier

now for animals than in the past, and

many try to provide a natural habitat and

lots of space rather than confining them to

small, unhygienic cages. However, I object

to zoos breeding animals simply for public

amusement. This zoo created a freak, something that would never have happened

naturally, and just to make money.” …

44

… Nathaniel pointed out that although hybrids are not common there are some

that exist, the most common one being the mule which is the cross between a female

horse and a male donkey. Mules however are sterile and so never have offspring

themselves. Other examples include the zorse, a zebra/horse cross, and in fact one was

born a few months ago in Germany. Other zebra crosses include the zeedonk, the zony

and the hebra. There’s also the cama, a camel/llama cross, plus the geep, the wolphin

and the yakow! Nathanial doesn’t object to mules: “They are tough and healthy and are

bred because they make strong animals that can carry a lot on their backs.

Unfortunately, ligers, like tigons, often have health problems, this one is likely to fall ill

and die young. There’s a park in the US the breeds ligers and only three out of the last

24 cubs have been normal, but they still developed head shakes as they grew older. In

fact this one is lucky to still be alive now, four tigons were born in China but none

survived.”

The fuss over the new born has died down in the town since the first week, with

other local news taking prominence, but there’s still enough interest to keep up the

number of visitors to the zoo. The results of the naming competition have also been

announced. So what did they decide to call it?

“Ah yes,” he said, suddenly looking embarrassed, “the winning name was

____________, I suppose I should’ve seen that coming!”

Video games should be in Olympics

A top designer for one of the world's most popular computer games has said that

video games should be an Olympics sport. Rob Pardo, who was chief creative designer for

the World of Warcraft game, told the BBC his game and other video games should be

part of the Olympic Games. He said the competition needed to become more modern and

up-to-date. He added that millions of people around the world love playing and watching

competitive gaming, which is also known as e-sports. Mr Pardo said: "I think the way

that you look at e-sports is that it's a very competitive skillset….You look at these

professional gamers and the reflexes are lightning quick…. and they're having to make

very quick decisions on the fly."

Pardo told the BBC that it would be difficult to get e-sports into the Olympics. He

said many people do not even see it as a real sport. He argues it is proper sport because

it takes a lot of physical effort and skill and is very exciting to watch. He believes it is a

better and more popular sport than many of those already in the Olympics. Pardo said

many people did not want gaming to become an Olympic sport because it is based on

technology and not athleticism. The PC

Magazine website suggests there should

be a separate international competition

just for e-sports, that could follow a

format like the Olympics. This would

make gaming the star of the show rather

than just another event among many in

the Olympics.

Why People Get Tattoos

Jack lay, quiet and unmoving, for thirty minutes while a stranger

repeatedly stabbed him with sharp needles, causing blood to pour

steadily out of his leg. Jack was getting a tattoo. His friend Tony

had recently gotten a tattoo, and Jack was so impressed by Tony's

bravery and his tattoo that he decided to get one too. Getting a

tattoo because your friends and peers have them is just one of the

reasons why a lot of young people in North America get tattoos.

Peer pressure, media influence, and personal expression are some of

the common reasons for wearing tattoos today.

The desire to be part of a group, to be accepted by one's friends or

peers, can have a great influence on what a person does. Sometimes,

wearing a tattoo can be a sign that you belong to a certain group.

Gangs often use special clothes and tattoos to identify their

particular group. For example, in one gang all the members may

wear green army jackets and have large 'Xs' tattooed on their arms. It is not only gangs that

have this type of special 'uniform'. Young people often belong to a certain group of friends.

Some of these groups wear only brand-name clothes. Some wear only black clothes. Others

wear tattoos. When a person's friends are all doing something, such as getting a tattoo, that

person is more likely to do the same thing, and get a tattoo too.

The media is another big influence behind the popularity of tattoos in North America. A wide

variety of media images show tattoos. Tattoos can be seen on people appearing in

commercials selling expensive cars. Famous sports heroes with tattoos are shown in

magazines. Fashion models are often seen in magazines and on TV wearing designer clothes

that show their bodies tattooed with detailed and colourful patterns. These media images

link tattoos to ideas of wealth, success, and status. As a result, many people decide to get a

tattoo for its fashion and status value.

It is not always the influence of other people or the media that results in a person getting a

tattoo. Many people decide to wear tattoos in order to express their artistic nature, their

beliefs, or their feelings -- in other words, to show their individuality. A musician in a rock

band may get a tattoo of a guitar on the arm. Some environmentalists may tattoo pictures of

endangered animals on their shoulders. Lovers may tattoo each others' names over their

hearts. A tattoo can be a public sign to show what is important in a person's life.

As you can see, there are many reasons why young North Americans get tattoos. A tattoo can

be part of a group's uniform. It can be a sign of fashion. It can be an expression of

individuality. The decision to get a tattoo is most often a result of the influence of friends or

media or the desire to express oneself. For Jack, it was a mixture of all three.
