THE ISSUE AT HAND
There are few places as cold and lonely asyour banker’s waiting room.
You arrive a few minutes early, perfectlycoiffed, dressed in your Sunday best waitingfor the receptionist to welcome you to thebanker’s office or conference room. You’rethere to seek a loan or to go over financialsas your line of credit is up for annual renewal.
You bring a stack ofpapers, maybe in a niceleather portfolio, with all ofyour center’s financial data. You secretly pray the bankerdoesn’t see the tiny beads ofsweat that are about tobreak out on your forehead.
You anticipate all the questions yourfriendly banker is going to ask: Cash Flow?Gross Revenues? Gross Profit? Net Profit?Revenue Growth? Collateral? You’ve got all theinformation at hand to provide clear, conciseand relevant answers. You’re convinced yourmission is accomplished and that you havethe banker eating out of your hand.
Then, like a bad episode of Columbo, thebanker asks you just one more question:How does your center compare to othercenters in your city, state and the country? The vibe in the room immediately changes
from warm and casual to cold and impersonal. This is the moment of truththat will determine whether you get the loan or go home empty-handed.
The fact is, only a select number of proprietors can confidently andaccurately answer these questions. If you’re a part of the BPAA 20Group, maybe. If you’re a chain, maybe. If you’re a member of MUBIG,maybe. But, chances are you are not one of the above. Chances are you’relike me. A very lonely one or two center operation with little access to thesefigures.
To save the day, the BPAA is underwritinga brand new “Benchmarking and OperatingRatios” study, and they need ALL OF OURHELP to volunteer to provide accurate andtimely data. The last survey was conductedin 2006. The 2009 attempt had beenabandoned due to poor participation from thevery people who could benefit most– US! That
was, in my opinion, a terrible shame. My new professional mission is to make sure the BPAA has the
groundswell support it needs to get this survey off the ground. Let’s besure that the next time we need to visit our local banker, we are armedwith the information we need to stay in controlby answering all questions confidently andaccurately.
Email: [email protected] to volunteer toparticipate.

Knowledge is Power
"What I really want to do is...act!" Owners and employees of FountainBowl in Fountain Valley, CA, have realized that wish whether they hadconsidered it before or not. Ree-Invent Films has been periodically filmingits current feature project, “We’ve Got Balls,” within the center proper.
The story revolves around a small town, a bowling center and anavaricious land developer who wants to tear down the center to make wayfor a gambling casino. How do 52 people handle the prospect of the worldas they know it coming to an end? Not well. According to director CherieKerr, “the story gets messy, tense, suspenseful and, oh, so very funny.”
Possibly an even better question might be how bowling proprietors, managers and the employees handle the fame and fortune of Hollywoodand still keep the lanes open. Both partners, Dave Osborn and Gary Forman, have found themselves playing roles. Osborn who has been recruited as the
bartender in the filmsaid the whole
project has been verypositive. Kerr has
worked with the center using time that works well for both her crew and thecenter. Has it had a negative effect on business? No. Customers seem toenjoy the excitement and sometimes they are even brought into the mix asextras—background people.
Osborn feels the story is one to which everyone can relate: a present dayDavid and Goliath.
It is a serious topic done in a funny way. “I have a good feeling. It’s gonnabe neat!”

As compared to other sports, bowling has aninteresting and long history dating back to earlyEgypt. Historical migration; societal mores andbeer all had major effects on its growth.
While all interesting, the development oftelevision and technological innovations suchas automatic scoring and pinsetters pushedbowling’s celebrity to its heights.
Mark Miller in his new book, Bowling:America’s Greatest Indoor Pastime, weaves afascinating tale complete with more than 70photos. It is a must for bowling enthusiasts andanyone interested in how activities of all kindsare affected by and influence our culture. Mark

CBS Pittsburgh broke a story that should resonate with bowlingenthusiasts and for anyone with a heart and a passion. Four yearsago, shortly after getting married, Tony Guarino, 48 years old, wasdiagnosed with terminal prostate cancer. Not only did he face achallenging battle, he also was told he could no longer bowl.
“My lower back is all cancer cells all the way into my pelvis,” Tonysaid. If I twist wrong or I step wrong, I fracture my back. I’m done.”
Tony has loved bowling as long as he can remember. Hispassion was instilled by his father and uncle. His ball of choice isStorm which he used to bowl his only 300 game. He began totake comfort in thinking that being held in a bowling ball wouldnot be a bad idea. “I’ve bowled for how many years? Why notbe buried in a bowling ball for the rest of my life?” His friendsthought he was joking but once his wife Stacy realized he wasserious, she called the company.
Mike Sargent of Storm Products said they would be honoredto realize Tony’s wish.
With permission of the president of Storm, Dave Symes,Sargent went to work with the production team to create acustom made urn out of a Storm X-Factor Ace which is the ballTony used in his 300 game. The ball indeed arrived, and it will goin his ball bag with the ball his father used and his favorite ball. But, according to Stacy, Tony will go in the third slot on top so he’sNo. 1.”
With the help of the Dream Foundation, an organization thathelps make dreams come true for adults who face life-threateningillness, the Guarinos made the journey to Utah to spend the dayat Storm. Tony and Stacy toured the production facility and wereinvited to Storm’s Summer Party. Whilethe Guarinos were thrilled, it wasthe staff at Storm that felt theyhad been given a gift.
Tony still holds out hope that“maybe someday, I’ll be ableto throw a bowling ball one ortwo times before I pass away.”

Sturgis, South Dakota was on the brink of losing its bowling center. In 2011 Buffalo Bill’s closeddue to lack of up keep on the building. From that time thoughts gravitated to razing the structure. However, the Mueller family just couldn’t see that happening. Fred Mueller and his wife, Bernicealong with sons Mike and Frank purchased the building and then began the not so easyrenovation. Daughter Barb and her husband, Stewart Hagman, will manage the facility which willbe known as Sturgis Strikers.
12 lanes, cosmic bowling and birthday bowling parties will begin September 15. There willalso be a bar and restaurant called The Laughing Hyena. Patriarch Fred has been on four Africasafaris amassing a collection of 80 taxidermied animals which will be part of the design.
“We’re in this for the people of Sturgis,” Frank Mueller said.
Brad and Michelle Angelo have purchased South Transit Lanes, a 24-lane center inLockport, New York. Brad, a veteran professional bowler, is a regular on the PBA Tour. Marcel Fournierof Sandy Hansell and Associates, Inc. served as the broker in the transaction.
Friendship Lanes in Cape Coral, Florida, was purchased last October and has now becomeHeadPinz, an all-inclusive entertainment center under the new ownership of Bonita Springs-basedBowland Centers of Southwest Florida. Six of the 24 lanes have been converted into an arcadededicated to holding 48 games, forming what manager Eric Olson said will be one of the largestarcades in southwest Florida.
Uptown Alley, a $21 million, 60,000-square-foot, 40-lane bowling and entertainmentcomplex, will be one of the biggest indoor entertainment facilities in Virginia when it opens inNovember in Chesterfield. This is the second Uptown Alley for Steve Uphoff who purchased theland in 2008.
Take two friends who love bowling. One, Dick Alcorn, is closeto turning over his business to his son and retiring, and one, TimPeterson, owns a restaurant that closes at 2 in the afternoon.Put in the mix a bowling center that has been closed since winterand what you come up with is the reopening of PeabodyLanes in Peabody, Kansas. The men have great hopes that theirnew center will become a community hub. They have installednew carpeting in the entry and eating area and have generallypolished everything.
As quoted in the Peabody Gazette-Bulletin, “The bottomline is that bowling is good fun, good exercise, and a way tobe with people you enjoy,” Alcorn said. “That’s how it’ssupposed to work.”
Peterson added, “We want everyone to have a goodexperience at Peabody Lanes.”
Midland Bowl, Fort Smith, Arkansas’s oldest bowlingcenter has been sold to Bartholomy Bowling Centers, aSpringfield, Missouri-based company that also owns andoperates bowling centers in Missouri, Oklahoma andTennessee. Bartholomy intends to retain the current staff of 25people and might add employees if necessary. The name willbe retained to respect the history of the facility.
Although a rocky start, The All Star(shortened from All Star Lanes) has finallyopened in Riverhead, New York. Itstarted as Bowl 58 in 2007 but was nevercompleted. Present owner is Main RoadHoldings, LLC headed by JeffreyRimland. The 22-lane center alsofeatures an arcade, two-tier restaurant

pecial Olympics and the BPAA haveannounced an official partnership incelebration of the 25th Anniversary ofthe groundbreaking A Very Special
Christmas music series that benefits SpecialOlympics. The effort will be two-pronged with in-center fundraising events as well as album saleswhich, in cooperation with GoBowling.com andStrike Ten, will feature a sticker and coupon fortwo free games of bowling.
Early this year Lou Raiola, President and CEOof WarpSpeed Connection, a cause marketingcompany, and Steve Johnson, Executive Directorof BPAA, started having conversations abouthow bowling could be a part of the release of themusic series that benefits Special Olympics. Raiolacontacted the BPAA to propose the partnership.Because Special Olympics is about sportscompetition, WarpSpeed felt they needed a wayto fuse music with sport. They looked at theparticipation numbers and found a sport withtop participation which already had musicintegrated with the sport... the sport of bowling.
BPAA’s 3,500+ member centers were seen asa great distribution and awareness outlet thatwas new and different from normal music releasechannels. From there, bowling was positioned asa “value add” for the program. To further createawareness of bowling, each CD will have a
GoBowling sticker on the outside packaging, communicating the offer oftwo free games of bowling. Getting national awareness for bowling on retailshelf space with brands like Best Buy, Target and Walmart is a powerfulmarketing tool. “We learned so much about the extraordinary work of thebowling industry and their incredible effort on behalf of charity each year. Then we learned of Special Olympics existing programs with bowling andwe agreed with leaders of both BPAA and Special Olympics that this wasa moment, a special moment in time, to grow the partnership and cometogether,” said WarpSpeed’s Raiola.
There are two Very Special Christmas CD’s which will be released onOctober 16, 2012, the 25th Anniversary compilation CD, Bringing Joy to theWorld and a Christian CD, Bringing Peace on Earth. Each CD will have sixteentracks (see sidebar).

During Bowl Expo in Reno last June, Jeff Bojé, a multi-center proprietor and past president of both BPAA and USBC,committed to purchase 1000 CDs to sell in his centers andchallenged other proprietors to do the same. The project is nearand dear to his heart as Bojé has a special needs daughter withDown Syndrome. “You learn, as a parent of a special needschild, that all they want and need is to live up to their potentialand Special Olympics helps them do just that,” said Bojé. TheCDs retail for around $12.00 and proprietors will have theopportunity to purchase them for around $8.00 of which 100%of the proceeds, after expenses, will go to Special Olympics.Bojé plans to donate the additional $4.00 per CD to his localSpecial Olympics chapter.
Clear Chanel will also be helping to promote the CDsthrough 850 owned radio stations with 237 million monthlylisteners. They will be hosting A Very Special Christmas Chanelduring the holidays and airing PSAs (Public ServiceAnnouncements) from the recording artists and others involvedin the albums over the past 25 years. The company's radiostations and content can be heard on AM/FM stations, HD
digital radio channels, Sirius/XM satellite, on the Internet atiHeartRadio.com and on the company's radio station websites,on the iHeartRadio mobile application on iPads andsmartphones, and used via navigation systems from TomTom,Garmin and others.
In the second key component to the partnership, BPAA willbe collaborating with the Law Enforcement Torch Run® (LETR)for Special Olympics to host and organize bowling fundraisingevents around the country to benefit Special Olympics athletesand U.S. Special Olympics programs. The Torch Run is theSpecial Olympics largest grass-roots fundraiser and publicawareness vehicle in the world. The Law Enforcement Torch Runbegan in 1981 when Wichita, Kansas, Police Chief RichardLaMunyon saw an urgent need to raise funds for and increaseawareness of Special Olympics. In 2011, dedicated lawenforcement volunteers raised $42.6 million for SpecialOlympics Programs around the world and have eclipsed $410million raised since the inception of the LETR.
More than 85,000 law enforcement officers in all 50 U.S.
States, 12 Canadian provinces/territories, and 48 other countriescontribute to LETR efforts annually as Guardians of the Flame®,ensuring the delivery of the Special Olympics Flame of Hope™to the Opening Ceremonies of local Special Olympicscompetitions, state/provincial games, and national games.
The new fundraising partnership between LETR, BPAA andSpecial Olympics will be called “Strikes for Special Olympics”.LETR volunteers and Special Olympics staff are dedicated tocollaborating with BPAA center owners and operators to puton fundraising events in support of Special Olympics. Thefunds raised through locally organized Strikes for SpecialOlympics events will directly benefit the state LETR and SpecialOlympics programs where the funds are raised.
Over the past 31 years, the Law Enforcement Torch Run hasevolved from a symbolic awareness run to a very significant, annual, grassroots fundraising effort conducted by the lawenforcement community. From Torch Run T-shirt and hat salesand to a wide variety of special events, such as golftournaments, Over the Edge, "Tip-A-Cop" events, PolarPlunges®, the World’s Largest Truck Convoy® and Cops onDoughnut Shops® fundraisers, the LETR raises funds so thatmore Special Olympics athletes can benefit in many areas oftheir lives through sports training and competition. Nowbowling will be added to that impressive list.
When Major Michael Teem retired from the Raleigh, NorthCarolina, police department in 2010, he accepted a newposition with Special Olympics as the Executive Director of theInternational Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympicsafter serving as a volunteer for 22 years in the program. Teembelieves bowling and the new partnership with BPAA is aperfect fit for Special Olympics and that LETR bowling eventswill make a significant impact on Special Olympics. "The lawenforcement community and LETR participants are verydedicated to growing the cause of Special Olympics, and Ibelieve programs will take advantage of this opportunity tocollaborate with BPAA and local bowling centers to raise fundsfor Special Olympics," says Teem. The LETR International

Conference allows volunteers from all corners of theglobe to receive training, network, and developstrategies to improve their local Torch Run programs. The BPAA has arranged a bowling event forconference attendees and local Special Olympicsathletes to help promote Strikes for Special Olympicsand learn more about the new partnership.
Strikes for Special Olympics align the power, dedication and grassroots reach of the LETR with thecommunity based sport of bowling. The program isbest advocated through each State BPAA ExecutiveDirector, the voice of the bowling industry. Based onthe fundraising success of the LETR and the numberof bowling centers in the U.S., this collaborative efforthas the potential to make a huge difference for SpecialOlympics by providing the funding needed to increasethe number of participating athletes as well as enhanceprogramming at the state level.
The program has a very flexible and extendedtimeline for fundraising events, from October 1-
December 23, 2012. Individual centers, in cooperationwith their local law enforcement, are able to work out the best eventtime for all parties involved. BPAA members are experts at hostingbowling fundraising events and know what works best in their area. Oneof the great things about hosting a bowling fundraiser is that thatthere are many formats that can be used. These range from a straightbowling team tournament to midnight cosmic, psychedelic bowling. Theright format for each venue will depend on what target group ofbowlers they want to attract and the limits of their imagination. Someof the recommendations from the handbook include:
Regular Team TournamentBowl-a-ThonSpeed BowlingBowl for the GoldRock and Bowl, Xtreme Bowling, Cosmic BowlingFormal Night/Costume Bowling
Every BPAA member center was sent a “Strikes for SpecialOlympics”event guide via email. If you did not receive a copy of theevent guide, or would like another copy, log on to bpaa.com and clickon the “my BPAA” page. n its 47-year long colorful history the prestigious annual QubicaAMF Bowling World Cup Tournament has literally been hostedand staged in centers and countries throughout Europe, Asia, Africa, the Americas, and the former USSR.During this time there have been a number of firsts for the tournament: the most notable being that it’s the first and only
bowling event that can claim to be the largest annual sporting event in the world of any kind, in terms of the number ofparticipating countries. In terms of firsts, this year’s tournament, the 48th annual assemblage in the series, is no exception as it heads for the city of
Wroclaw in Poland where, Marek Maciejewski will host the tournament at his Sky Bowling Center and Fitness Academy Gym,which opened its doors in June, 2012. This is Maciejewski’s introduction to the bowling business, not to mention his first
experience hosting a major international sporting event.“I am so pleased that QubicaAMF has chosen my center to host the prestigious
Bowling World Cup,” said Mr. Maciejewski. “We haveworked hard to create an exciting center and we willoffer a very warm Polish welcome to all competitors, officials, the world press, and guests.”
A highly successful Polish businessman,Maciejewski’s first career was inconstruction and development. “My

A friend of Maciejewski’s was developing the high rise Sky Tower. “I didn’t join him in the development,” said Maciejewski,“that’s the way to lose friends.” But he did take a part of the second floor of the lower section. And that area is now home to
the extensive and very impressive 24-lane Sky Bowling Center and Fitness Academygym is one of six fitness centers that Maciejewski owns.
Ron Wood, QubicaAMF’s Senior Vice-President of International Sales andService, said: “The Sky Tower is a landmark for Wroclaw, rising above all the otherbuildings. It is sure to be a major attraction in southern Poland and we aredelighted that bowling features so prominently in the development.”
Anne-Marie Board, the Bowling World Cup Manager, commented: “The SkyBowling center is stunning, a terrific place to hold the 48th Bowling World Cup.With all the other facilities on offer, from the shopping and restaurants in theSky Tower, to the beauty of Wroclaw itself, this is sure to be a great event.”This will be Anne-Marie’s 20th anniversary as the QubicaAMF Bowling WorldCup manager.
While the Bowling World Cup will be a first for Maciejewski and Poland, theCity of Wroclaw (pronounced Vrots-waf) is no stranger to hosting internationalsporting events. Having been one of the hosts of the UEFA Euro 2012 (EuropeanFootball [soccer] Championships), and the FIBA EuroBasket (2009), and theupcoming FIVB Men’s Volleyball World Championships (2014), the city hasexperience with large crowds. Wroclaw has also been selected as the EuropeanCapital of Culture for 2016 and will host the World Games, a competitioncomprising 37 non-Olympic sports, including bowling. With a population of circa 632,000, Wroclaw is the fourth largest city in Poland,
and has a long history of changing borders. Over centuries the city has been apart of Poland, Austria, Bohemia, Germany and Prussia. However, as a result ofborder changes after World War II, Wroclaw has been a part of Poland since 1945.The QubicaAMF Bowling World Cup (formerly the International MastersTournament) was the creation of AMF’s Public Relation’s Director, the late VictorKalman. COVER STORY
Orbis, located just walking distance from Sky Tower. The WroclawOrbis is described as a towering white monument that deliversall the comfort and service you would expect from a major player(the Orbis Travel chain) in the hospitality industry.
And there’s the city itself, known as the “City of Bridges,” withits old world charm, architecture, medieval buildings, bridges overthe river Oder, museums and an Old Town section that is not onlythe cities historical center but also today's social and cultural center. Here you will find not only the city's most splendid architecture, but also its best shops, restaurants, bars, galleries and museums, all of which will be captured by Hiroshi Noda, the intrepid officialphotographer for the tournament, as competitors are hosted ona sightseeing tour.
Poland’s first participation in the Bowling World Cup was in1996 with its best results coming from Marek Przezpolewski forthe men in 2008 when he finished 17th, and Daria Pajak for thewomen, who narrowly missed out in the second round last year, finishing 25th. The greatest achievement by a Polish bowlercame in 2004 when Pawel Bielski bowled a perfect game at thetournament in Singapore. Hopefully, with the support of local fans,a Polish competitor will rise up in the ranks at the 2012 assembly.
Bowling World Cup Tournament Manager Anne-MarieBoard expects at least 90-countries will participate this year, with 80-countries confirmed at the time of writing this story, including Kyrgyzstan and possibly Macedonia, who will
participate for the first time.Sky Bowling is a large center by Polish standards, where the
average size center is around six lanes, made up of a mix of 9-pin string machines (the first of which opened in 1994) and 10-pin centers. The first 10-pin center opened in 1997 in Gdansk.
Artur Gorniak, QubicaAMF’s Regional Sales Manager forPoland, predicts that the market will grow between 15 to 20centers over the next five-years, of which at least 50% will be withstring machines, as additions to hotels, swimming pools, andrecreation facilities, etc.
As a new center, Sky Bowling has yet to develop an aggressiveleague program, and presently business is predominantly a mixof open play and party bowling, with a small but developingleague program. And while Poland has a bowling association, thePolish Ninepin and Tenpin Association, with a membership of circa1,000 members in its tenpin division, only about 400 are active. However, as the industry continues to grow in Poland, so too willthe membership and participation of its bowlers association.
Board says that local organizing committee, headed up byMaciejewski, busy putting everything in place to ensure thesmooth running of the tournament, from securing hotel roomsto arranging local transportation. They will also arrange sightseeingtours and various hospitality functions for competitors, officialsand press, and make the center ready to host a world-classcompetition, including setting up a fully equipped media centerfor visiting and local journalists. “No detail is being overlooked,”said Board, “and the committee is doing everything possible toensure that the visitors to their delightful city will experience thewarmth and friendly hospitality that I’ve discovered is typical ofthe Polish peoples.”
The official arrival day for competitors is November 24th. Thefinals including the Eurosport TV international broadcast, theclosing ceremony and the victory banquet will be on Saturday,December 1st, with departures from Wroclaw on December2nd, when competitors, officials, journalists and guests willreturn home with fond memories of Wroclaw, Poland, andanother wonderful exciting QubicaAMF Bowling World Cup. ❖

he Bowling Proprietors Association of America’s presentationof bowling’s U.S. Women’s Open in June was filled withpageantry and drama. The setting was beautiful-outdoors
on Virginia Street in Reno with the custom-built finals lanes locatedunder the famous Reno Arch. The controversial lane conditions, withdust and debris being blown onto the lanes, garnered as much inkas any bowling event in recent history. The five finalists were stoicand toughed it out, each match going down to the final frames. Itwas a great story. Somehow, however, a fabulous achievementand history making record was lost in the controversies surroundingthe tournament.
While the regular Women’s Open garnered all the press, RobinRomeo of Newhall, CA, quietly made history on June 26, 2012 inthe Senior Women’s U.S. Open at the National Bowling Stadiumin Reno. Quietly being the operative word. Romeo became the firstwoman in history to win a title in the U.S. Open and the Senior U.S.Open, and she did it in the Inaugural Senior U.S. Women’s OpenTournament.
More than 60 bowlers, age 50 and over, participated inthe event, June 21-26, 2012. Four bowlers made thestepladder finals for a chance to bowl for the first SeniorU.S. Open Title. Not surprisingly, each of the finalists,Jeanne Naccarato, Dana Miller-Mackie, Lucy Sandelin andRomeo are in the United States Bowling Congress Hall ofFame, Superior Performance category. To say this was a

“tough field” is an understatement.Sandelin led the tournament, wire to
wire. Romeo was positioned in secondplace going into the finals. “In a stepladderfinal, I think every bowler would rather bethe top seed but having a game underyour belt is always an advantage. My gameplan is one ball at a time, make every shot
count, and just be ready to make a ballchange or a line adjustment.”
In the final match Sandelin opened intwo of the first five frames, giving a littlebreathing room to Romeo. "Lucy doesn'tmiss spares, so for her to start the match withan open was surprising," Romeo said."When bowling for a championship, or evenany match, I try not to pay attention to whatmy opponent is doing and just bowl myown game. I knew Lucy would eventuallystart striking and knew I couldn't let up."
"You never think you're going to winagain," said an emotional Romeo afterthe title match. "But the feeling never getsold. You work so hard and compete yourwhole life. As you get older things changebut the fire is still burning inside. I lovecompeting. I've been bowling better andhad a lot of confidence and knew if I justbowled my game and kept my head in agood place things would work out right."
Quietly going about executing hergame plan, Romeo once again madehistory as she has done so well throughouther career. No stranger to records, shehas set no less than five records in her
career. Her record-breaking performances include: 77 Consecutive Appearances in the Finals for the Professional Women’s
Bowlers Association, 1985-1889 80 Consecutive Cashes in a Professional Women’s Bowlers Association
Tournament, 1985-1889 Points Record in the Bowler’s Journal Cup, 1989 Single Season Earnings Record for the Professional Women’s Bowlers
Association, 1989-1993 First woman to hold both regular and senior titles in the Women’s U.S. Open
The place where Romeo quietly slipped into the recordbooks, The National Bowling Stadium.
While these records are impressive, she feels hergreatest accomplishment came in 2007 when she wasinducted into the National Italian-American Sports Hallof Fame, the first woman bowler to achieve theaccomplishment. “It was the first time I was recognizedoutside the sport of bowling. I am very proud of that”said Romeo who is a member of no less than seven Hallsof Fame including, United States Bowling Congress(USBC); Professional Women’s Bowling Association(PWBA); California State USBC; Women’s All StarAssociation; San Fernando Valley USBC and SouthernCalifornia Bowling Writers.
Career achievements of this talented professionalinclude eighteen national professional titles, includingfour “Majors”; four USBC Women’s Championshipstitles; nine California State Women’s Tournament titles;two New York State Women’s Tournament Titles and oneWest Coast Senior Tour Title (first woman to win thisevent). She has bowled twenty-seven 300 games andnine 800 series.
Romeo also enjoys giving back to the sport she loves. She has worked as a coach for “Camp Bakes”, MarkBaker’s 4-day coaching camps, for the past eight years andloves working with bowlers of all skill levels. “I am honoredto be a part of Camp Bakes. I love working with Mark andall of the other great coaches he has. Mark has takenbowling to another level. We all work together on thegame, but you can say the spare game is my specialty.”
Her mother, Joan Romeo, President of the BowlingWriters Association of America, was surprised at Robin’schoice to bowl the senior event rather than the regularU.S. Women’s Open. Robin explains “It was a very harddecision to make because of the prize fund. My momwanted me to bowl the regular U.S. Open. She stillbelieves I can compete at the highest level, and so do I.

The USBC, BPAA and The Orleans came up with a Triple CrownSerie, for the senior bowlers. If you competed in the Golden Ladies,Senior U.S. Open, Senior Queens you would be eligible based on yourqualifying scores to win the Triple Crown. I had a great start at theGolden Ladies [where Romeo finished second behind Dana Miller-Makie] and I thought how cool would it be to be the first women towin the Triple Crown. I guess I made the right decision.”
The Triple Crown Shoot-Out will be held in Arlington, TX, at theInternational Bowling Campus Training and Research Center onSunday, October 21, 2012, following the final round of qualifying duringthe USBC Senior Queens Tournament. It will feature the top10bowlers based on qualifying totals (48 games) competing in a single-game, single-elimination bracket format, from the three major seniorwomen's events, National Golden Ladies, presented by the OrleansHotel Casino, Las Vegas, NV; BPAA Senior U.S. Women’s Open, presented by the brands of Ebonite and the USBC Senior Queens. The top qualifier will receive two byes, while the second, third andfourth qualifiers will receive one bye. The total prize fund will be $5,000and all 10 players will cash, with $1,000 going to the winner. "These
three great events are partnering together to offer more opportunitiesfor senior women bowlers," USBC Managing Director of Media andEvents Pete Tredwell said. "We're excited to be increasing thecompetition and creating more avenues for bowlers."
And what is Romeo’s game plan for that event? “I approach alltournaments I bowl in the same way, make the cut. The Triple Crownplayoff is a one game match, so I will handle it just like a TV match, one ball at a time.” The USBC Senior Queens Tournament and theSenior Triple Crown Shootout will be live-streamed on Bowl TV whichcan be accessed through Bowl.com, so be sure to watch the actionand find out if the “Romeo Game Plan” works again. ❖

hirty years ago, James PaulThompson was a younginstructor at Olivet NazareneUniversity in Illinois. He waspresented with a project to
create “something” to cover a 40-foot wall inBrookmont Bowling Center’s then arcade room.
“It came at a time in my life when I reallyneeded that money,” Thompson said. “Ihaven’t thought about that painting for a longtime. But it meant a lot to me: I was paid$4,000 for that one, andthen the owner wanted twomore for his bowling alleysin Carol Stream andNaperville. Those muralshelped me pay off mycollege loans.”
When Brookmontrenovated, the fate of themural came into question. “Ithought it was important topreserve it,” Julie Bourassa, the sales specialist, said.“So, I checked into the artistand, in the meantime, wetook it down and moved itinto our new game room.”
Brookmont is a 36-lanecenter which has been inoperation since the sixties. With new ownership, itupdated the lanes andapproaches and added alounge with a stage and event capacity for 300plus people.

World. No small feat! The project took nearly four months to complete. It offered a3-D effect and was designed to be seen amid the flashing lights of an arcade.
“Because this ‘space odyssey’ mural was placed in a game room that youthful trafficwould frequent, I decided that the stretched canvas over the plywood would resultin a tough surface in case the mural was bumped. I thought I would add sand to thepaint to give it depth,” Thompson said. “But the sand was too heavy. It would slideright off the canvas. Then I tried sawdust and that worked.”
It is almost impossible to just take a quick glance. One is immediately transportedto a world of imagination that astronauts and adventurers conjure in their dreams. The last thing that Thompson painted on the mural before signing his name was afootprint of an astronaut—one small nod to destination Moon. ❖
