The Festival of British Eventing at Gatcombe Park celebrates 33 years of competition this year. Hamptons International has been involved with the event since 2003 sponsoring the popular members only Hamptons International Garden Club. Captain Mark Phillips and HRH The Princess Royal started the horse trials at Gatcombe Park back in 1983 when there were no Championship classes and visitor numbers were in the hundreds over the weekend compared to the 40,000-50,000 people that visit the festival today. Captain Phillips designed the very first cross country course at Gatcombe Park while he was still pursuing his own eventing career and remains the course designer today. “The Princess and I felt that if we put on a good event with good footing then the good horses and riders would come” and they did. The roll of honour reads like a Who’s Who of eventing including: Lucinda Green on Village Gossip in 1984, Mark Todd on Charisma in 1985, Bruce Davidson on JJ Badu winners of the very first British Open Championship in 1986, Ginny Leng on Night Cap II in 1987, Mary King and William Fox-Pitt have won the title four times a piece and Andrew Nicholson has taken the title three times including last year on the legendary grey horse Avebury.

In 1986 The Festival of British Eventing was born running the British Open Championship and British National Championship, the British Intermediate was added in 1993 and British Novice Championship in 2002 and this year a National Restricted Novice Championship is to take place for the first time for competitors that have not ridden at Advanced or Intermediate level in recent years. Captain Phillips believes that these amateur riders will enjoy the excitement of competing at the same championship event as their heroes of the sport. The Festival has a team of loyal sponsors of which Hamptons International is one. The Hamptons International Garden Club occupies an enviable position right next to the main arena, where members are able to watch the showjumping phase of the competition as well as all the thrilling entertainment that is on offer over the weekend. The Garden Club is fully catered with a bar and offers members a place to sit, watch the excitement unfold in the main arena as well as offering a video link to the action out on the cross country course. Regulars in the main arena include the exciting Shetland Pony Grand National where mini jockeys battle it out for a place in the final at the London International Horse Show at Olympia, the majestic Dressage to Music display featuring some of the countries up and coming riders;

and the thrilling scurry driving competition in which teams of driving ponies race against the clock around an obstacle course. This year for the first time The Kangeroo Kid (aka Matt Coulter) will perform daredevil stunts on four wheels rather than four legs. Matt has entertained millions of fans around the globe with his record breaking stunts that have included jumping a flying plane. There is also lots to see and do in the second arena with fly-ball, dog agility and a fun dog show. The Pony Club is not forgotten as they take part in Mounted Games and Team Show jumping throughout the weekend. With a food walk and over 120 trade stands offering visitors the opportunity to buy everything from high quality fashion, jewellery, unique craft items in the rural crafts marquee, to everything for the horse and rider and even the latest model of Land Rover. The Festival of British Eventing could not operate without the incredible team including Tim Henson, now in his 19th year as Event Director and the amazing band of 750 volunteers that work over the three days, giving up their time to take on tasks as diverse as stringing the cross country course, laying out the arenas and fence judging the cross country.

Out on the famously undulating cross country course the park bowl offers visitor the perfect place to watch the competition unfold. Running in reverse order of merit the tension is palpable as the last rider sets off knowing exactly what has to be done to stay in the lead and win the converted title. The steep sided valley offers the perfect viewing position over the water complex as well as many other influential combinations, with the beautiful house overlooking this part of the course, the park bowl is the place to be. The atmosphere at The Festival is unique, it is the landscape, the people, the sponsors, the competition and the location that all come together to create this most wonderful of events.
