The TruthA woman dies from complications in childbirth every minute - about 529,000 each yearthe vast majority of them in developing countries. (UNICEF)

8 million babies die every year before or during delivery or in the first week of life (UNICEF)

Pakistan has one of the highest child and adult mortality rates in the world.

More than 80% of maternal deaths are due to five direct causes:

Most of these deaths are preventableHaving a safe and clean environment to give birth in andskilled staff to look after mother and baby before, duringand after delivery are the key to decreasing infant andchildbirth deaths.

About Dr. Saleem KhanFounder and Chairperson ofInternational Foundation for Mother and Child Health

Dr Saleem Khan is an Obstetrician & Gynaecologist working inEngland. He has over 17 years experience looking after mothers andchildren in Pakistan, UK and Europe.

A strong belief in charity work and in an individual's ability to make adifference was an integral part of Dr Khan's upbringing. His inspira-tion has been his grandfather, Templet on Prize winner Dr. InamullahKhan, founder and former Secretary-General of the World MuslimCongress, who devoted his life to working tirelessly to advancepeace. A passion to improve the lives of vulnerable people is thedriving force in Dr Saleem Khan's work.

Dr Saleem Khan was involved in the earthquake relief work inPakistan in 2005. He witnessed first-hand the hardships mothers and infants were facing dueto the lack of maternity facilities and trained medical staff. Wanting to help, he initiallydesigned and set up 16 delivery units in Kashmir through a project funded by Impact UK.

Seeing the impact of this work on the health and wellbeing of mothers and infants drove DrKhan to establish the International Foundation for Mother and Child Health.
