International Happenings

Message from our Director of International Students

Kia ora all

We look forward to the beginning of Term 3, with eight new long term Internationals from a variety of countries starting at Hargest.

We also have 25 students and 3 adults from our sister city, Kumagaya, here for 10 days. This is a most exciting time especially for our Japanese language students - a good opportunity to practice!

There is also a group of 9 students from China joining Hargest for the first week of Term 3. This will allow us to learn more about their culture.

Thanks to all families who are homestaying our visitors.

The International Friendship Club will be very busy welcoming these groups. We are so lucky to have such a wonderful group of supporters. I can’t imagine any other school in New Zealand to be so blessed.

Dear Homestay Familes and StudentsJust a gentle reminder of homestay obligations:• If your student wants to stay with a friend overnight,

please get the details from your student and confirm this arrangement with the friend’s parents.

• With winter well and truly underway, it’s time to check if your student(s) is/are warm enough. Wheat bags and, of course, hot water bottles, are excellent bed warmers.

• In the dark winter months, please ensure your student(s) is/are safe if returning from school or sports practices.

Finally, as Term 2 draws to a close, please have a safe and happy holiday. Keep warm, study hard (a little over the holidays would be great) and most of all, have fun.Ann KingsburyHomestay Co-ordinator

4 Great Foods to Have After a WorkoutSeveral of our International Students are actively involved in sports teams and are training regularly.

EggsProtein and carbs are the two keys to a good post-workout meal. Eggs have the former covered. At just 70 calories each, eggs pack 6.3 grams of protein and are one of the few foods that naturally contain vitamin D. Also, don’t let the Rocky movies fool you; raw eggs have no advantages over cooked ones. In fact, cooking eggs allows your body to absorb almost twice the amount of protein.

Orange JuiceInstead of a Gatorade, grab a glass of OJ. In addition to vitamin C, you’ll also get significantly more potassium than you would from popular sports drinks, which are generally intended for use during extended exercise, not after. Potassium is an important electrolyte that helps the body restore its fluid levels. Orange juice also works well for protein shakes.

BananasBananas are high in the “good” kinds of carbs you need after a workout. These fast-acting carbs will help restore your body’s levels of glycogen, which helps rebuild damaged muscles. And they provide lots of wonderful potassium.

BlueberriesThese little guys give your body a huge antioxidant boost. In fact, studies show that blueberries can triple your rate of recovery after intense workouts.

Study CentreThis is held on Tuesdays in the Senior Campus Library. Teachers are available to help until 5.00pm. Encourage your International Student to attend.

Maths Tutorials for InternationalsFor all Level 1 and Level 2 B Maths students in E3 from 3.30-4.30pm on Wednesdays. Please ensure your homestay son/daughter has transport home.
