These flags are used at sea for communicationbetween ships. The can spell out short messages! andindi"idual flags and "arious combinations of flags also ha"e

special meanings. #n ceremonial and festi"e occasions thesignal flags are used to $dress$ %decorate& ships.

This signalling sstem was drafted in 1'(( and published in1'()! and was graduall adopted b most seafaring countries. It was re"ised in 1*+2.

,The purpose of the International Code of -ignals is topro"ide was and means of communication in situations relatedessentiall to safet of na"igation and persons! especiall whenlanguage difficulties arise., It has done this b first establishinga standardied alphabet %the letters / to 0! and the ten digits&!along with a spoen form of each letter %to a"oiding confusingsimilar sounding letters! such as $b$! $p$! and $"$&! and associatingthis alphabet with standardied flags.

Combinations of these alphanumeric characters areassigned as codes for "arious standardied messages. For

instance! the master of a ship ma wish to communicatewith another ship! where his own radio ma not be woring!or the other ship$s call sign is not nown! or the other shipma not be maintaining a radio watch. #ne simpl raises theilo flag %see diagram at the top&! or sends the Morse Codee3ui"alent %dash4dot4dash& b flashing light5 this has theassigned message of ,I wish to communicate with ou.,

#ne of the elegant aspects of the IC- is that all of the

standardied messages come in nine languages %6nglish!French! Italian! German! 7apanese! -panish! 8orwegian!

and! since 1*9*! ussian and Gree&. That the sender andrecei"er%s& are using different languages is immaterial5 eachlanguage has a boo with e3ui"alent messages eed to thesame code. This is also useful in radiotelephon! or e"en

when ships are within hailing distance! if there is nocommon language: a crewman on a burning ship ells, uliett alfa "our,! and a "essel coming to their aid nowse;actl what the need: ,material for foam fire e;tinguishers,%that is! the foaming agent&. %-ee de:Flaggenalphabetforthe German "ersion of single4letter signals.&

The code also co"ers procedural aspects %how to initiate acall! the format of a message! how to format date and time!etc.&! how na"al ships %which usuall use their own codes&indicate the are using the IC- %b fling the code pennant&!use in radiotelephon %use of the spoen word ,Interco,&!and "arious other matters %such as how an aircraft directs a"essel to another "essel in distress! and how to orderunidentified submarines .

/lthough ou ma ne"er see them displaed e;cept at fleetparades! around na"al installations! and areas with hea"international shipping traffic! International code flags areused to signal between two ships or between ship andshore. /lso called signaling flags! the are a set of flags ofdifferent colors! shapes and marings which used singl orin combination ha"e different meanings. The flags include29 s3uare flags which depict the letters of the alphabet! tennumeral pendants! one answering pendant! and threesubstituters or repeaters.

#nl a few colors can be readil distinguished at sea. Theseare: red! blue! ellow! blac! and white5 and these cannot bemi;ed indiscriminatel.
