International Racing NewsMelbourne Cup trophy visits Ed Dunlop's Newmarket yard

Ed Dunlop had the bizarre experience of having the Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) he has been trying to get his hands on for the past decade on his own his breakfast table on Thursday morning.

The appearance of the 18-carat trophy is part of a world tour of the prize which is passing through Newmarket until the weekend when it will be on display at the July festival on Friday and Saturday.

Dunlop famously prepared Red Cadeaux (Cadeaux Genereux) to run in the Melbourne Cup five times between 2011 and 2015, finishing second on three occasions, most notably when beaten just a nose by Dunaden (Nicobar) on his first attempt.

After a three-year break, Dunlop is back on the Flemington trail with Red Verdon (Lemon Drop Kid) who was on show to the media together with the cup at Dunlop's La Grange stables on Thursday. International Racing News page 17

<< Continued from page 1 "Across at the board our structure is staying the same and we think it is working at the moment," Bowditch said. "We have got a diverse list of sales that kicks off with the Gold Coast in January. To have a January sale that is averaging north of $225,000 and grossing over $160 million was unimaginable some time ago.

"To get to that level and be clearing close to 90 per cent, we believe it is a sale that should be on any commercial breeders' radar.

"You always consider, once you get entries for a sale, whether you need to tinker with it, but the structure for all our sales in recent years has stayed the same and we see no reason to change being it Gold Coast, Adelaide, Tasmania or Perth."

Nominations will remain open until August 10 (or March 15 in the case of the Gold Coast National Yearling Sale) when the process of determining where each yearling would be best placed to achieve its potential will begin.

Bowditch explained: "We will go out and see each and every one and discuss with the vendors where we see them best being sold, from the point of view of an experienced team who have been together for quite some time. We feel we have our finger on the pulse when it comes to servicing our vendors.

"You can't be too one-dimensional in any way, so diversity throughout a catalogue is important, whether that is through sires and different pedigrees from all parts of the world, or different types to suit different buyers. We assess all those things when we put our

catalogues together."Reflecting on the 2018

yearling sale series, Bowditch added: "At all levels you want to be able to cater for your buyers and your vendors, so last year we were pleased with our results. All those sales went up. Tasmania had a record gross, Adelaide was solid and achieved an average that we hadn't had for ten years and Perth had a remarkable sale with a clearance rate of 97 per cent with the new format.

Thursday Sales MAGIC MILLIONS

"We have worked hard attracting a strong buying bench for all our sales and that is reflected in our $10 million raceday that people want to be a part of. Turning up to all those sales gives you a chance to be a part of that.

"We are excited to get out there and see everyone's yearlings because they have put in a lot of work over the past two years with their matings and foaling down the mare."

Last year's Perth Yearling Sale was the last to be staged at Belmont Park following a 45-year run, with Magic Millions having purchased a four-hectare property in the famous Swan Valley wine region as it's new home in Western Australia.

Bowditch is excited about the move and believes shifting to a purpose-built sales venue will only enhance the buying and selling experience.

"Perth Racing has been phenomenal in having us there at Belmont for quite a long time, but it is not a purpose-built selling site and the Harvey family saw the opportunity to buy our own land for us to

develop where (Magic Millions) and our clients can operate from for many years to come.

"It is 20 to 30 minutes from town and it is located in between a few wineries. Everything is out there with restaurants and golf courses and then you are still only 20 to 30 minutes from town."

Nominations can be submitted now via the online entry facility.

15 for HussonFirst Crush (6 g ex Loving New by Choctaw Ridge) broke through at stakes level to win the Grafton Cup (Listed, 2350m) on Thursday to become the 15th stakes winner for Husson (Hussonet). Trained by Chris Munce and ridden by Mark du Plessis, the winner beat Winkler (Rip Van Winkle) by a length, with a short head back to Reneged (Mossman) in third. The six-year-old gelding First Crush has won seven of his 34 starts for prize-money of $358,050. Husson is best known as the sire of William Reid Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) and Toorak Handicap (Gr 1, 1600m) scorer Lucky Hussler.

First Crush lands the Grafton CupChris Munce was recording his third Grafton Cup win but first as a trainer with First Crush enduring a torrid run to win the Listed race. Munce won the 2350 metre Grafton feature twice as a jockey on Count Scenario (Scenic) (1999) and Stormhill (Danehill) (2005). Munce admitted it was hard watching as Mark du Plessis navigated a path out wide but all was well in the end. "I was nearly going to walk back to the horse stalls," Munce told Sky Thoroughbred Central. "But Mark knew what he was doing. I didn't."

Munce grateful for big team effortFirst Crush is raced by Sydney businessman Max Whitby, a long-time supporter of Munce, and Jenny Moses, the wife of another former jockey-turned-trainer Kevin Moses. Whitby was a part-owner of Savabeel (Zabeel) who Munce rode to win the 2004 Cox Plate (Gr 1, 2040m). "I told Max we would win the Grafton Cup and it's terrific to do it for him," Munce said. "But it's a big team effort. I've got a lot of young kids, a lot of young staff who work tremendously hard."

Yulong acquire star filly FoxplayFour-year-old Group 1-winning mare Foxplay (Foxwedge) has been

sold by Star Thoroughbreds to Yulong Investments, having originally been purchased at Magic Millions in 2015 by Star Thoroughbreds for $160,000. Raced by partnership in the purple and white Star Thoroughbred colours, Foxplay won five of her 24 starts for prize-money of $1,425,510 including the

Queen Of The Turf Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m) and a memorably close second to Winx (Street Cry) in the Warwick Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m), both at Randwick.

McCarthy confident of Ashlor’s chancesDan McCarthy is confident his stable star Ashlor (Hard Spun) could record back-to-back wins after drawing barrier two of eight in the Sir John Monash Stakes (Gr 3, 1100m) at Caulfield on Saturday. "I’m absolutely confident... especially once the barrier came out - I think barriers are so important, especially for this horse," McCarthy told RSN927's Racing Pulse on Thursday. "It makes such a difference if he can chase, and not be the sitting duck out in front of them. We've got speed both sides of us. Inn Keeper doesn't muster speed quickly, but he's generally right up on the speed, and outside of us, Showpero's a little bit the same. I'm expecting barrier one and three to both be in front of us, and Sunday Escape from the outside. So we should get a really, really nice run in behind those ones."

Crystal Dreamer ready to roar in Sir John MonashCo-trainer Simon Zahra is confident Crystal Dreamer (Stratum) is ready to perform to his best in the Sir John Monash Stakes after a faultless build-up to the Group 3 race. Crystal Dreamer resumes for his first start since March and usually performs well fresh and also likes Caulfield having won three of his eight starts at the track with another two placings. "His two jump-outs have been terrific," said Zahra. "We're rapt. He's going really well, he loves Caulfield and I can't really fault him. His first-up runs are always good and he's had a faultless preparation. If he's good enough he'll be right in the finish."

Sir Bacchus gets Winter Stakes startThe Chris Waller-trained gelding Sir Bacchus (Sebring) will be aiming for a first black-type success in the Winter Stakes (Listed, 1400m) at Rosehill on July 21, after getting into the field as first emergency. Sir Bacchus is one of two runners for trainer Chris Waller along with Invinzabeel (I Am

Invincible), and the trainer believes Sir Bacchus can make his presence felt with luck. "He's going okay but needs luck because his get-back racing style makes it hard for him," he said. "Invinzabeel has an awkward gate but at least he is getting back on a good track which will suit."

Avdulla hoping for big run from Dreamforce Runaway premiership leader Brenton Avdulla says he knows smart galloper Dreamforce (Fastnet Rock) well enough not to get concerned about another wide gate at Rosehill on Saturday. For the third time in as many starts this preparation, the John Thompson-trained Dreamforce will jump from barrier 13 in the Winter Stakes. "He’s a horse I’ve had a bit of luck with, I know how to get the best out of him and I’m hoping things can fall into place for him and he can get a stakes victory,’’ Avdulla said. “I’m not too worried about it, he begins well and from where I’ve drawn I’ve got to roll the dice and see what happens. From a good draw he could possie up with cover. I’ll see how the track is playing and what the others are doing around me.’’

Improving Emperor to make his mark at RosehillEmerging stayer Emperor’s Way (Roman Emperor) rose quickly through the ranks during the summer with the four-year-old beginning his summer campaign in a Benchmark 67 (1400m) and ending it a four-time city winner and Listed winner. With his rating now up to 96, Emperor’s Way begins the next phase in the Winter Stakes (Listed, 1400m). “He was winning at a soft time of year but winning well and overcoming difficulties and winning,’’ said co-trainer Peter Snowden. “He’s come back a big stronger and has a pedigree that suggests he will get better as he gets older. If he keeps getting better he might measure up to something in the spring. At this stage I’m looking at the Wyong Cup, whether we go further time will tell.’’

Megablast to shoulder colossal weightTough New Zealand stayer Megablast (Shinko King) will need to set a modern day weight-carrying record if jockey Damian Browne is to complete his list of Caloundra feature wins. Browne, who will be riding on a stay pending an appeal on a handling charge, partners Megablast in Saturday's Queen's Cup (Gr 3, 3200m) at the Sunshine Coast track in what will be his final start for trainer Nigel Tiley. Megablast gave Browne his third Caloundra Cup (Listed, 2400m) two weeks ago when he carried 58kg. "Nigel did a great job to win the Caloundra Cup with him because he hadn't run for a month," said Browne. "If he gets the right soft track he should be even further improved."

Schweida pair head to Sunshine CoastThe chance to race on a bigger track has convinced trainer Kelly Schweida to run three-year-olds Shogun Sun (Written Tycoon) and Bluebrook (Hinchinbrook) at the Sunshine Coast. Shogun Sun will tackle the three-year-old handicap (1400m) and Bluebrook the Class 6 plate (1600m) at Caloundra on Saturday. He said it had been a logical decision to dodge the Grafton Guineas (1600m) won by the Kris Lees-trained Turnberry (Snitzel). "In the end the prize money at Grafton is no better and we don't have the trouble of having to travel down there," said Schweida. "The big track and soft conditions are obviously a bonus."

Pair of Japanese entries in major spring CupsTwo Japanese horses have been confirmed as Caulfield (Gr 1, 2400m) and Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) entries as the countdown begins towards the spring carnival. Chestnut Coat (Heart’s Cry) and Sole Impact (Deep Impact) have both been entered for the Caulfield Cup and the Melbourne Cup. "Chestnut Coat and Sole Impact are both quality horses and we identified them as potential Cups horses some time ago, so it's very pleasing that their connections have already announced that they will be sending them to Melbourne for the spring racing carnival," said Paul Bloodworth, RV general manager for international and racing operations.

QRIC apologises on prize-money releaseThe Queensland Racing Integrity Commission has apologised for incorrect information it released about withholding prize-money payments to some horses trained by Ben Currie. Commissioner Ross Barnett said on Wednesday prize-money from April 7 had not been released to the connections of Hang (Clang) and Givus A Cuddle (Snitzel) who were among the horses subject to an ongoing stewards' inquiry. "After further clarification was sought and received from Racing Queensland we can now clarify that while the connections have received their prize-money, the ten per cent trainer's share due to Ben Currie remains withheld until the current inquiry is completed," said Barnett. "I apologise for the inaccuracy of the information contained in yesterday's release.”

Caulfield to host Jim Moloney StakesThe Melbourne Racing Club has named a new race after the late Hall of Fame trainer Jim Moloney. The Jim Moloney Stakes (Listed, 1400m) for three-year-old fillies will be run at Caulfield on September 22, the same day as the Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m). Moloney's sons John and Gerard gathered at Caulfield on Thursday along with Gerard's son Patrick to reflect on a brilliant career and express what it would mean to win the inaugural running.

New Zealand

Trainer has high hopes for Gallagher Gallagher (Epaulette) will return at Ruakaka on Saturday with the hope of a return to black-type competition later in the season. The youngster showed promise in his first three runs before a break and is geared up and ready to resume in the Almanzor at Cambridge Stud sprint (1000m). “Like everyone else in the country we’re looking at the Guineas races,” said trainer Jacob McKay. “We hope and dream and what he has done so far has me quite excited.” Gallagher finished runner-up on debut and was then an unlucky fifth in the Phoenix Park 2yo Classic (Gr 3, 1200m). “He was pretty stiff at New Plymouth, he got held up a couple of times before the turn,” McKay said. “He got squeezed up again in the final 50 metres and Johnathan Parkes was adamant he could have run third.”

Santa Catarina being readied for AustraliaTalented filly Santa Catarina (Savabeel) has begun her build-up toward a proposed trip to Australia. “She’s been back for three weeks and is in light work at this stage,” trainer Stephen Marsh’s foreman Rhys Mildon said. “She’s strengthened up a lot, she was very raw early on.” The Savabeel (Zabeel) filly has won two of her three starts and was spelled following her success in the Waikato Equine Veterinary Centre 2yo Stakes (Listed, 1100m) at Te Rapa in May. Santa Catarina is likely to be set for the Tea Rose Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m) in September as a lead-in to the Flight Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m), also at Randwick.

Purton has high hopes for High RiseZac Purton hopes High Rise (Myboycharlie) can showcase his high-class credentials when he runs in the Sha Tin Mile Trophy Handicap (1600m) on Sunday at Sha Tin. The Caspar Fownes-trained Rise High has been a late-season revelation. He took time to acclimatise to Hong Kong, meaning that he missed all three legs of the Four-Year-Old Classic Series earlier this year, but his last two victories – both over the Sha Tin 1600 metre show that he has high-class potential. “His last

win was good and he showed that he’s a horse heading in the right direction,” Purton said. “He’s progressive, but whether he can get to the highest level remains to be seen. His racing manners have improved, he used to overrace quite badly when he first got here but he has learnt to chill.

Wells Farhh Go bounces back in Bahrain Trophy

Wells Farhh Go (3 c Farhh - Mowazana by Galileo) notched up his second Group win in the Bahrain Trophy (Gr 3, 1m5f) at Newmarket on Thursday. Trained by Tim Easterby and ridden by David Allan, the winner beat Loxley (New Approach) by two lengths, with Giuseppe Garibaldi (Galileo) a further five lengths back in third. Wells Farhh Go had finished down the field in the Dante Stakes (Gr 2, 1m2½f) at York and the King Edward VII Stakes (Gr 2, 1m4f) at Royal Ascot before Thursday’s run. The son of Farhh (Pivotal) has now won three of his five careers starts for prize-money of £149,132.

28 for ShowcasingAdvertise (2 c ex Furbelow by Pivotal) became the 28th stakes winner for Showcasing (Oasis Dream) when delivering a smooth late run to win the July Stakes (Gr 2, 6f), justifying his odds of 11-10. Trained by Martyn Meade and ridden by Frankie Dettori, the winner beat Konchek (Lethal Force) by two lengths, with Charming Kid (Charm Spirit) a neck back in third. Showcasing enjoyed an excellent Royal Ascot this year, with Advertise second to Calyx (Kingman) in the Coventry Stakes (Gr 2, 6f) and Soldier’s Call winning the Windsor Castle Stakes (Listed, 5f). Third Group win for Best SolutionBest Solution (4 c Kodiac - Al Andalyya by Kingmambo) stuck on best to win the Princess of Wales's Stakes (Gr 3, 1m4f) at Newmarket’s July course on Thursday, the third group success of his career. Trained by Saeed Bin Suroor and ridden by Pat Cosgrave, the winner beat Mirage Dancer (Frankel) by half a length, with Duretto (Manduro) a neck back in third. Best Solution came into the race on the back of a fifth-place finish to Thunder Snow (Helmet) in the Dubai World Cup (Gr 1, 2000m), and has now won six of his 19 starts.

72 for War FrontNaval Intelligence (3 g ex Say by Galileo) sprung a 33-1 surprise in the Sir Henry Cecil Stakes (Listed, 1m) at Newmarket on Thursday to become the 72nd stakes winner for War Front (Danzig). Trained by Jane Chapple-Hyam and ridden by John Egan, the winner beat Gabr (Intello) by a length and a half with a nose separating him and Masaarr (Distorted Humor) in third. War Front is the sire of 17 Group/Grade 1 winners including sibling pair US Navy Flag and Roly Poly, while his dual Grade 1-winning son The Factor is the progenitor of likely The Everest (1200m) contender Bound For Nowhere.

12 for No Nay NeverVanilla Gold (No Nay Never) broke her maiden in the Prix de l’Avenir (1100m) at Chateaubriant on Wednesday to become the 12th individual winner for No Nay Never (Scat Daddy), who currently leads the European first-season sires’ table by earnings. Trained by Nicolas Clement, Vanilla Gold finished third on debut at Maisons-Laffitte over the same distance and progressed nicely to win by two lengths at her second start. The two-year-old became the first European winner for Gold Coast-based owner Hoss Heinrich. Visiting Deauville last year for the Arqana August Yearling Sale with Guy Mulcaster, the pair combined to purchase the filly for €120,000, the duo’s first foray of buying at the sale.

Bound For Nowhere to The EverestWesley Ward has confirmed that The Everest is his immediate plan for Diamond Jubilee Stakes (Gr 1, 6f) third Bound For Nowhere (The Factor). Bound For Nowhere was third to Merchant Navy (Fastnet Rock) in the Diamond Jubilee at Royal Ascot and is now in quarantine preparing for a journey to Sydney. Ward has been in negotiations with slot-holders, though Bound For Nowhere’s sponsor will depend on the outcome of Saturday's Darley July Cup (Gr 1, 6f) at Newmarket. "The Everest is the plan now, it works right in line with what I'd like to do,” Ward told Racing.com. "We've been in negotiations with slot-holders. We've spoken to Coolmore, but that will likely depend on Saturday's July Cup and how the Aidan O'Brien-trained horses run there."

VERDICT Main Edition won the 6f Group 3 Albany at Royal Ascot, narrowly from La Pelosa with Angel’s Hideaway fourth,

Pretty Pollyanna fifth and Chicas Amigas seventh. However, it may prove worthsiding with the Queen Mary form instead and in particular GOSSAMER WINGS,who improved to finish a short-head second in that 5f Group 2 at Ascot. The selectionhas to prove herself back up in trip, but her trainer has won the last two runnings ofthis with fillies who were beaten at Ascot. The same connections had the third in thisseason’s Albany, so they have a good line on the form, and they also had the fourthin this year’s Queen Mary - and that one landed a Group 3 next time.[Ron Wood]

VERDICT Irish 1,000 Guineas runner-up Could It Be Love has the bestform, and having blazed a trail that day (and when third in the 7f

Jersey Stakes at Royal Ascot) she should have the speed for 6f. However, she wasturned over as the 5-6 favourite in a 7f Group 3 at Fairyhouse on Sunday, whichtempers enthusiasm. PRETTY BABY had subsequent Listed winners in the nextthree positions (Classical Times a near-2l second) when scoring at that level atNottingham last time out in May, and she can make it four wins from five careerstarts. The front-runner Sandra’s Secret can make a bold bid now back up to6f.[Ben Hutton]

BETTING FORECAST: 4-6iAlpha Centauri, 6iClemmie, Threading, 10iNyaleti,12iOpal Tiara, 20iAltyn Orda, Arabian Hope.

VERDICT Alpha Centauri is the clear form pick, a dual 1m Group 1winner against her own age group, most recently impressive in

the Coronation Stakes at Royal Ascot, and she probably doesn’t have much to fearfrom the older runners in this, but maybe CLEMMIE can cause an upset. Theselection has been no match for Alpha Centauri this season, including when alsobehind Threading at Ascot. But Clemmie was last year’s leading juvenile filly andAidan O’Brien, who has won this race for the last two years with 3yos who wereearlier beaten in the same Ascot race, must think she can rediscover some form.Clemmie’s 2yo campaign included a Group-race win over Nyaleti at this meetingand if bouncing back she can go well again.[Ron Wood]

Ed Dunlop had the bizarre experience of having the Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) he has been trying to get his hands on for the past decade

on his own his breakfast table on Thursday morning.

The appearance of the 18-carat trophy is

part of a world tour of the prize which is passing through Newmarket until the weekend when it will be on display at the July festival on Friday and Saturday.

Dunlop famously prepared Red Cadeaux (Cadeaux Genereux) to run in the Melbourne Cup five times between 2011 and 2015,

By David Milnes of the Racing Post @anz_news

Melbourne Cup trophy visits Ed Dunlop's Newmarket yard

finishing second on three occasions, most notably when beaten just a nose by Dunaden (Nicobar) on his first attempt.

After a three-year break, Dunlop is back on the Flemington trail with Red Verdon (Lemon Drop Kid) who was on show to the media together with the cup at Dunlop's La Grange stables on Thursday.

The trainer said: "It's certainly a bizarre experience finally seeing the Melbourne Cup on the breakfast table but I just hope we can finally win it for real with Red Verdon.

"His owner Ronnie Arculli went close to winning it so may times with Red Cadeaux and we feel Red Verdon has the right profile for the race."

He added: "Red Verdon was Group 1 placed at three and more recently twice at Group 2 level including his second to Crystal Ocean in the Hardwicke Stakes at Royal Ascot.

"The plan would be to give him one run before going into quarantine which would either be at Goodwood or at Kempton in the September Stakes. The plan then is to run him in the Caulfield Cup before heading for the Melbourne Cup itself."

Amanda Elliott, chairman of the Victoria Racing Club, hosts of the Melbourne Cup, commented: “I am absolutely delighted to be bringing the Cup to the home of horseracing in Britain.

"The town has such a rich connection to the Melbourne Cup, with past European-trained Cup winners including Americain and Protectionist completing their quarantine in Newmarket, and so many Newmarket trainers travelling horses to Flemington every year to compete.”

OverviewWar Decree (War Front), a Group 2-winning son of War Front (Danzig),

will stand at Inglewood Stud in New Zealand this year at a fee of NZ$6,500 (plus GST).

Trained in Ireland by Aidan O’Brien, War Decree won three of his 11 starts including the Vintage Stakes (Gr 2, 7f) at Goodwood as a two-year-old. He added the Diamond Stakes (Gr 3, 1m2.5f) at Dundalk the following season and finished second in the Huxley Stakes (Gr

2, 1m2.5f) at Chester this season.

Inglewood Stud owner Gus Wigley is excited by the acquisition of War Decree, who proved himself to be among the best two-year-olds in Europe with his dominant Vintage Stakes victory, beating subsequent Dubai World Cup (Gr 1, 2000m) winner Thunder Snow (Helmet) and recording the second fastest time for the race.

War Decree was also a decisive winner on debut and a close second in the Superlative Stakes (Gr 2, 7f) at Newmarket at his only other start as a juvenile.

On his female side, War Decree is equally well represented, his dam being a daughter of the breed-shaping stallion Street Cry (Machiavellian) and multiple Grade 1-winning mare Ticker Tape (Royal Applause).

War Decree’s dam also produced Listed-placed Noble Quality (Elusive Quality), while his third dam produced Group 1 winners Brando (Pivotal) and Reckless Abandon (Exchange Rate) and Listed winner Best Approach (New Approach).

While Nature Strip (Nicconi) continues to win and impress with his excellent mid-race sectional times, Everest slot-holders remain cautious in offering connections a start in the $13 million race at Randwick on October 13.

Nature Strip is a rising young star and his win was smart at Flemington on Saturday but concerns were raised about the level of his ratings, and his racing manners after seemingly going more keenly than usual.

But Nature Strip did win, and win comfortably, by a length and a half in taking out his first stakes success, the AR Creswick Stakes Final (Listed, 1200m) - also his first success beyond 1100 metres.

It was his sixth win from nine starts and Nature Strip remains unbeaten from two starts for new trainer Darren Weir, who prepared Nature Strip for a most impressive first-up win in a three-year-old handicap (1100m) at Flemington a fortnight earlier.

Nature Strip won that 1100 metre event in a fast 1:02.26 (11.32 200m rate) - equivalent to 1200 metres in 1:07.92 – a fast overall time supplemented with brilliant sectionals that were subsequently highlighted in a recent On The Watch column.

That performance saw Nature Strip gain a new Timeform peak rating of 118, albeit well below the ratings of key players for the upcoming The Everest (1200m) which is headed by Trapeze Artist (Snitzel) [126].

Then on Saturday, Nature Strip returned a Timeform rating six pounds less, his win gaining a 112 figure adding further to slot-holders’ caution in committing to offering an Everest start.

And while he did not produce the brilliant sectionals that he had produced in his first-up victory, Nature Strip still showed his quality and potential with his exceptional mid-race pace.

Clocked from the 1000 metres, Nature Strip’s 200 metre breakdown was: 10.42, 10.91 (400m in 21.33), 11.00 (600m in 32.33), 11.40 (800m in 43.73) with his final 200 metres in 12.67 to give him a last 1000 metres in 56.40… and those times were against a strong headwind.

A questionable part of Nature Strip’s performance was his 12.67 final 200 metres which indicates that he is probably vulnerable against stronger and more experienced opposition.

However, factors supporting Nature Strip’s talent being the fact that he could lead, racing into the headwind and produce a mid-race time of 43.73 - only really talented horses can do that and very few could then maintain that sort of tempo into the final 200 metres.

Perhaps after only nine starts, Nature Strip does not have the experience to match our best under the weight-for-age conditions of The Everest… it might take another season for Darren Weir to weave his magic but he is still a colt deserving of the opportunity.

Earlier on the Flemington programme, the promising Lindsay Park-trained colt Good ‘N’ Fast (Sebring) impressed in taking out the Taj Rossi Series Final (Listed, 1600m), now winning two of his only three starts.

He was ridden quietly by Luke Nolen, Good ‘N’ Fast then settled nicely in seventh place, behind a moderate tempo, before moving up well on straightening.

The colt then finished too well in the sprint home to defeat a game Scottish Rogue (Rothesay) by a long head in a time of 1:37.89 on the Good 4 track.

Good ‘N’ Fast returned the best closing sectional times of the race with his final 1400 metres in 1:23.34, last 1200 metres in 1:11.86, last 1000 metres in 59.79, last 800 metres in 46.95, last 600 metres in 34.43, last 400 metres in 22.86 with his final 200 metres in 11.55.

He is a progressive colt who could easily prove effective against stronger opposition over the spring carnival.

Another talented young horse racing over the weekend that looks a spring carnival prospect is the Fred Kersley-trained filly Mizlecki (Lope De Vega) who impressed in winning the Belmont Oaks (Listed, 2000m).

She settled particularly well behind a very steady pace, racing midfield on the rails, before angling for a run on straightening.

Mizlecki then finished well along the rails before drawing away to score comfortably by two and a half lengths, running the 2000 metres out strongly.

The overall time on the Soft 5 track was moderate but Mizlecki did show her talent in sprinting home her final 600 metres in a swift 34.83 despite the affected conditions.

It was Mizlecki’s fifth win, with three placings, from 13 starts and the Belmont Oaks was her third stakes success to date.

Everest slot-holders remain cautious despite Nature Strip’s fast mid-race sectionals

A fter showing promise in two recent Rosehill barrier trials, the Bjorn Baker-trained three-year-old

gelding Taygeta (Duke Of Marmalade) made an impressive winning debut at Warwick Farm on Wednesday. Slow away from the stalls, Taygeta recovered quickly and soon took the lead. He then steadied the pace, grabbed a break on turning for home and then went on to win well, covering the last 600 metres in 34 seconds. He was almost two lengths clear of his nearest pursuer crossing the line, which suggests he should have the potential to go on to bigger and better things.

Bred and raced by the Seldon family, Taygeta is the fourth winner from five runners out of winning sprinter Sky Alert (Hurricane Sky), who was purchased by Supreme Thoroughbreds for the bargain sum of $6,000 in foal to Adelaide (Galileo) at last year’s Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale.

Sky Alert is also responsible for Orionids (Dylan Thomas), who took out three prestigious sprint handicaps in Hong Kong this season, and talented sprinter-miler Speckie (Aussie Rules).

Taygeta has a rather light pedigree, with no black-type winners unders his first three dams, though his great-granddam Kurri Kurri (Vague Image) is also the granddam of Il Don (At Talaq), who was third to Gold Guru (Geiger Counter) in the 1998 Australian Guineas (Gr 1, 2000m).

Sky Alert also has a rising two-year-old colt by Toronado (High

He settled well back in 12th place in the 16-horse field before commencing a wide move from the 600 metres. He hit the front (wide out) at the 100m before going on to score well by a length at the post. The $101 outsider Winkler raced in eighth place, moved up deep rounding the home turn, challenged at the 100m and battled on to take second in a photo from the late-closing favourite Reneged who came from tenth at the home turn with a wide run to grab third in the final strides.

Analysis: Lindsay Park-trained two-year-old gelding Smart Elissim created a very good impression with an easy win here on debut. He began well and travelled nicely outside the leader (Duke Of Magnus) before dashing to the front on straightening. He then drew right away to score by five lengths in an impressive performance.

Analysis: Mick Kent-trained filly Miss Pandanus is now unbeaten in two starts, following her debut win in a maiden handicap (1225m) at Geelong on June 22 with another good win here. Again racing on an affected track, she settled in second last place in the eight-horse field, went deep on turning for home and then came with a strong finishing burst (wide out) to win well.
