Johnny “Dandy” Rodríguez Jr. played Bongo over 30 years in theTito Puente Orchestra since he was 17 years old; also, he workedwith Tito Rodriguez from 1965 to 1968 and with Ray Barrettofrom 1970 until the end of 1972. Since 2000, “Johnny Dandy”Rodríguez Jr is the leader of The Mambo Legends Orchestra.

Frankie Vazquez is a Boricua Salsa Singer who collaborated withthe pianist, orchestra conductor, composer and arranger MartínArroyo in the project: Soneros Del Barrio in 1999. The aim was totransmit to the new generations a musical memory with newarrangements, technology and the talent of the musicians oftoday. Here is some information about him: Osmani was born in ‘Habana Vieja’, a very special barrioof Havana, Cuba. He began his dancing journey at age16 in Cuba.

Since then, the street was his main school and thestage became his second home. He was a member ofseveral dance companies in Cuba, allowing him toimprove his knowledge of dances like, Rumba, Afro-Cuban Body Isolation, Mambo, Cha Cha Chá and othertraditional cuban dances, as well as Casino de Calle(also known as Salsa Cuban Style) and internationaldances like Samba and Hip-Hop.

Nos menciona que apartir de sus 5 años es salsera gracias a supadre que es músico, quien trabajo  conprestigiosas Orquestas Colombianas quemarcaron su gusto musical, entre los temasque  más le agradaron están  “El GranCombo”, “Richie Ray” y “Andy Montañez”.

El objetivo principal de su empresa es representar y promocionarnuevos artistas a nivel internacional. Nos menciona que cuenta conun canal de vídeos conocido como “SALSA CÁMARA” y con unarevista musical llamada “TÚ VOZ LATINA COLOMBIA” la cual estápor salir al mercado; ambos se utilizan para promocionar a loscantantes y agrupaciones latinos.

Oscar Dudamel el padre de GustavoDudamel director de la Orquestafilarmónica de los Ángeles y de la OrquestaSimón Bolívar de Venezuela, tiene muchosaños de ser músico, todos los viernes ysábados, recibe los aplausos del público enel local donde toca el trombón desde unapequeña tarima con” La otra Banda deDudamel” el conjunto Agraz, un grupo desalsa que tiene como plato fuerte lostemas de la dupla que hicieron famososHéctor Lavoe y Willie Colón. Los domingos, a Oscar Dudamel le tocaestar en la otra orilla y aplaudir de pie,como lo hacen los padres, hinchados deorgullo por el talento de su hijo que conbatuta en mano, dirige una OrquestaSinfónica de prestigio mundial y que si sepiensa bien, su vena musical germinó de losmetales de la charanga la salsa y elguaguancó.

Pasadas las 10 de la noche es dif ícil encontrar lugar en “El templo de la salsa”, las entradas no se agotan, pero sí las mesas y los mejores puestos de este local ubicado en la calle 7 que cruza la avenida Bolívar de Maracay, allí se dan cita fanáticos y bailarines af icionados. de la salsa y lógicamente admiradores de Héctor Lavoe y Willie Colón. A Oscar Dudamel en el trombón lo acompañan Charly Guzmán, un joven talentoso que con apenas 18 años muestra los dotes de su voz; Oswaldo Agraz (director musical, piano y coros), Gerardo Vargas (bajo), Vicente Guzmán (timbal), Júnior Narváez (bongó), Diego Camus (conga y coros), Ventura Prieto (trombón) y Johan Figueroa (trombón suplente). Se trata del mismo formato, instrumentos e idéntica distribución (los trombones al lado del vocalista) de la orquesta que lo cautivó.

Y es que la música, a menudo, entra también porlos ojos, que lo diga Oscar Dudamel, que supo quequería ser trombonista cuando vio en La Feria dela Alegría a Willie Colón empuñar su instrumentoal tiempo que inflaba los cachetes, de esamanera, es sabido, que el primer acercamientodel hoy brillante, joven y cotizado Director deOrquesta Gustavo Dudamel a la música, no fueapreciando al Tchaikovski que tanto le gustadirigir, por el contrario fue apreciando la músicaque salía del trombón de su adorado padre. Enjunio anterior Oscar rindió como de costumbrehomenaje a Hector Lavoe, por conmemorarseaños de su muerte. “Héctor Lavoe murió el lunes29 de junio de 1993 a las 11:45 de la mañana”,suceso que recuerda con la exactitud que marcanlos hechos tristes, pero a pesar del dolor, consatisfacción y orgullo, menciona que su hijoGustavo de solo 29 años, antes de entrar aescena repite un ritual especial:

“Yo me imaginaba que Gustavo iba a ser músico”,cuenta. “Le dije: ‘Tienes que ser el mejor o estarentre los mejores y nunca perder tus principios niolvidar de dónde venimos’”. A los siete años Gustavo tocó el timbal con LaBanda Actual y a los nueve años le hacía losarreglos a esta orquesta de salsa en la que Oscartocó por 16 años y con la que se reencontró, luegode muchos años. Gustavo se decidió por el violín, un instrumento quese ajustaba a su talla, y en casa, padre e hijo teníanla manía de estudiar caminando. Había momentosen los que uno se agachaba para que pasara el otro,para que la vara del trombón y el arco del violín nose tropezaran. Sin embargo, música popular ymúsica académica hicieron finalmente su propioencuentro. Oscar no bate la melena, pero infla los pulmonescon fuerza y de esa respiración boca a boca con suinstrumento, logra sacar lo mejor…. El padre hablade su orquesta de salsa, con el mismo orgullo que elhijo (Gustavo) lo hace de sus músicos clásicos. 

En una vida marcada por la música nopodía faltar un soundtrack para elenamoramiento. Fue durante la visita deEl Gran Combo de Puerto Rico aBarquisimeto a finales de los 70, queOscar se fijó en Solange Ramírez, suesposa y madre de Gustavo; hoy 30años después cuando en Maracay suenaFalsaria, el tema lo lleva a recordaraquel momento imborrable.

Gustavo Adolfo, como lo llama sumadre, comenzó desde antes de loscuatro años a tocar güiro; más tarde élmismo armaba su batería con latas degalleta y cascos de seguridad.

Gustavo recibió los primerosconocimientos de música de su papá,que entonces era trombonista de laSinfónica de Lara, a quien le sobrabapasión para tocar y le faltaba pacienciapara enseñar. Quiso ser trombonista,como su padre, pero su pequeño brazono alcanzaba el instrumento.

EDWIN “EL CALVITO” REYES FROM COMBAT TO BEATS

After participating in the largest military coalition inthe history of the United States, Edwin "El Calvito"Reyes has shown that the phrase "If you dream thatyou can achieve it" is totally true. Dreams areachievable with perseverance, dedication and talent,qualities that this dreamy Sonero has, who will launchhis record label soon for all Salseros lovers whosupport the new blood of the Salsa. Edwin was born in Trujillo Alto (Puerto Rico) in 1974and when he was 19 years old, he began his artisticcareer, playing and doing concerts of Plena (FolkloricPuerto Rican Music) in his hometown. Five years later"El Calvito" Reyes enlisted in the US Army in order togive a better future to his family, after a terriblework accident in his previous job (He was anElectrician). During this year of change (1997) Edwin had his firstopportunity in front of the American public asvocalist leader in a consolidated orchestra in theselands, "Papo salsa and his Tumbao" in Fort StewartArmy Post, GA, thanks to the expert eyes of VíctorParis and Mr. Godreau, "Papo Salsa".

From March 2003 to 2007, Edwin "El Calvito"Reyes went to combat four times in Iraq andonce fought in Afghanistan, but he always feltthe need to help relieve the stress of all thesoldiers who were in those circumstances likehim. In this way he created Saturdays of Salsa incombat for which he received help in the firstinstance from an U.S. civilian specialist incommunications, Mr. Pérez, who contributed alarge part of the necessary sound equipment tocarry out this incredible idea at the beginning.

Later, Edwin with his percussionist and DJ skillsin 2005 returns to Iraq but this time betterprepared to carry out the Saturdays of Salsaparties during the fight. During this year he hadhis first performance in front of a crowd ofsoldiers and civilians accompanied by anorchestra of 14 musicians live, among whichwere:

19the Puerto Rican and master pianist JoséPomales, Willie Báez, Julio De La Rosa, andJavier Solivan, among others ... Everyoneplaying outdoors in the main dining room atCamp Liberty where the stage was. From thissuccess, the band continued its touches until2007 in this warlike country with an orchestraof more than 15 pieces: Piano, Bass, Trumpets,Trombones, Tenor Sax, Conga, Timbale, Bongo/ Bell, Drums, Vocalists and a sound master,with which this wonderful orchestra made atotal of 25 presentations.  “We were flown liketrue artist, in helicopters from one base toanother, to just perform and then return backto our original base… Playing at Saddam’sPalace (a true palace made of concrete andmarble) was the highlight. Also, at CampSlayer where the biggest dancing crewgathered was an adrenaline rush for us… Allwith the help of great people who really feltlike I felt; boost our own moral in combat!”told us Edwin.  

In parallel to his military career, "El Calvito"Reyes participated in the Latin MusicOrchestra in the city of Savannah, GA, "Roncon Anís" by the dead musician David Mercadoand of which in 2006 he would be its ownerunder the new name "Orquesta con Clase"reaching objectives such as: leading the LatinAmerican Services Organization (LASO)Festival in Savannah with more than 6,000attendees; They were the "Guests of Honor"for the Fiesta Atlanta Festival at the OlympicCentennial Park in Atlanta, Georgia,performing in front of 10,000 people. Also,they served as the backup band for: SalsaLegend, Larry Harlow, the 2011 HotalantaSalsa Congress, and many more.. In 2011 he is part of a selection of elitemusicians of the U.S. Army to form a Latinmusic band called "One & Only" idea ofcreation by The Army Marketing & ResearchGroup (AMRG) and carried out by themusicians Carlos Negrón and Albert Sánchez.This band, similar to U.S. Army JazzAmbassadors sang Salsa, Merengue, Bachataand other Latin rhythms for theentertainment of their audience.

During his tenure in this band he performed at the annualconventions of the League of United Latin AmericanCitizens (LULAC), which is the largest nonprofitorganization in America. He helped many Latinos obtainmillionaire scholarships, he was master of ceremonies onthree occasions contributing with his knowledge on "Theimportance to stay positive and reach that goal" and"How the army life will impact your life”. From 2012 to 2016, he was the Official in charge of theEnsemble. He achieved the inclusion of more musicians tothe group including female talent. He had the privilege ofmeeting political figures such as Michelle Obama, HillaryClinton and Ricky Rosello (current Puerto Rico’sGovernor), as well as acting in front of world-renownedstars such as: his idol Gilberto Santa Rosa, Olga Tañón,Tito Nieves, Jennifer Lopez, and many luminaries of thecountry's Hispanic television. Edwin "El Calvito" Reyes, leader, visionary and humblewas also the host of a radio show called "My Salsa Show"in WHCJ 90.3fm at Savannah State University. Fromthere derives his nickname "El Calvito", thanks to one ofhis fellow broadcasters of the station and since then he isknown as Edwin “El Calvito” Reyes by all his fans.

This composition of the "Virtuoso dela Salsa" Rey Torcat with arrangements of the sameEdwin with Eric Maldonado (Owner and MasterEngineer at Paris Recording Studios, Tampa, FL) andon the piano, Adam Perez, has been a symbol ofhope for all Puerto Rican emigrants based in the U.S."Mi Tierra Querida" was awarded by the AkademiaMusic Award for Best Song back in April 2018.

CREDITS:Roberto Valentin, better known as Bobby Valentin, was born on June 9th, 1941 in Orocovis - Puerto Rico. His father taught him to play the guitar at a young age. When he was 11 years old, he participated in a local talent contest with a trio that he had formed. He played the guitar and sang for the trio and they won the first place prize. In 1963, Valentin joined Tito Rodriguez and traveled twice with Tito's orchestra to Venezuela. He also made musical arrangements for Tito and at times for Charlie Palmieri, Joe Quijano, Willie Rosario, and Ray Barretto. Bobby was also the musical arranger for the Fania All Stars, and is featured in a live recording of the conglomerate's song "Descarga Fania" (which he also wrote) playing a bass guitar solo. In 1975, He left Fania and founded his own record label "Bronco Records" and released the album "Va a la Carcel" Vol 1 and Vol 2, recorded "live" at "El Oso Blanco", Puerto Rico's oldest state penitentiary. During the years Valentin has been featured in recordings (and occasional live performances) by Larry Harlow, Ismael Miranda, Roberto Roena, Cheo Feliciano and the always remembered, Celia Cruz.
