The availability of finance is essential for a structured trading system. Today, up to 80 per cent of global trade is largely supported by some form of financing. Nevertheless, there are significant gaps that riddle the trade finance and many trading companies cannot access the finance that they need; missing opportunities for growth and expansion. While non-traditional financing mechanisms that include factoring, supply chain finance, inventory financing among others do exist, they don’t respond to the needs of a variety of actors and their risk profiles. Most of the grain traders and processors are mainly SMEs who typically find trade finance availability pretty elusive owing to their lower collateral, guarantees and credit history than larger companies, and the high estimated value of unmet demand for trade finance being US$ 120 billion. While Africa’s production patterns are evolving, this means increasing trade opportunities and widening gaps in financing provisions. The design and development of a suitable trade finance product is important for stimulating the business growth and increasing the frequency to trade. This Course is designed to provide a comprehensive view of the interplay between trade finance instruments and supply chains as they apply to the grain commodities business. In order to increase the uptake of structured trade finance, potential actors require knowledge about the grain structured trading system, appreciate the risks and their mitigation measures, learn from case studies where the system is successfully being employed in the region and gain the confidence to engage. Introduction

As Africa makes steady progress towards agricultural transformation, significant and innovative financing is required. Africa lacks the financial services required to spur the agricultural sector into making the necessary shift to commercial agriculture (IFC, 2013).
