The University campus is a vibrantcommunity of more than 14,000students, 2,500 of whom areinternational students from over100 countries, and we are thrilledto be planning our secondInternational Summer School to provide an exciting andstimulating study opportunity.

As a historian I am particularlypleased to see the social andacademic fieldtrips that explorethe medieval city of Norwich andour country’s heritage, offering afirst-hand insight into our societyand culture.

Our main campus inNorwich is the capital city ofNorfolk, in the East of England.Norwich is the most medievalcomplete city in Europe, less thantwo hours from London, with trainsdeparting every 30 minutes.

Each taught programme includes dynamic teachingand stimulating excursions, some utilising our LondonStudy Centre in the country’s capital. In addition toacademic fieldtrips students will experience the charmingEnglish countryside and the stunning Norfolk coastline as partof a full and varied social programme.

Location

Located in the beautiful EastAnglian region, with its owninternational airport and easyaccess to London, the city ofNorwich has a lively andcosmopolitan atmosphere. It's also a safe and friendly place to live* and very studentfriendly, with lots of studentdiscounts available in shops,restaurants, bars and clubs.

The historic city of Norwich retains manytraditional aspects of truly British culture anduniversity life. Overlooked by its Norman castle and 11thcentury Cathedral, the cobbled streets open onto riversidewalks, quiet gardens, museums, cosy pubs and art galleries.

The University of East Anglia’sNorwich campus is located in320 acres of rolling parklandjust 3 miles from the centre ofNorwich. Frequent busesensure easy access into thecity centre 7 days a week.

Students select one academicmodule from the undergraduatelevel two options provided. Eachmodule will follow a commonprogramme, allowing students theopportunity to work in ‘subject’groups, as well as participate insocial activities with all summerschool students.

Our modules have beendeveloped specifically for thisprogramme, condensing 20 UKcredit hours into 4 weeks. Eachweek will involve around a dozencontact hours, and delivery will be through a range of teachingmethods, the majority beingparticipative seminars orworkshops, with the emphasis oninteraction and hands-on learningout on fieldtrips. Assessmentdetails can be found on page 16.

Biology in the Modern WorldSchool of Biological Sciences

This module will discuss variousaspects of biology and its impacton society. Students will discussa range of current ‘hot topics’(such as stem cells and GMcrops) as well as critically analysethe way biological science issuesare represented in popularliterature and the media. Studentswill learn to compose a reasonedargument and complete in-depthliterature reviews within specifiedscientific areas.

British Film and TelevisionSchool of Film, Television and Media Studies

This module will cover the conditions ofproduction, mediation and consumption,while also providing opportunities forclose analysis of key texts, figures andperiods. It will examine British film studiosand developing relations between filmand television production; discuss claimsabout the realist tradition within Britishfilm and television production; analyse arange of British genres; explore debatesover the situation of British stars anddirectors; study the preoccupation withhistorical materials in British film andtelevision production; scrutinise theconcept of national cinema; and observethe importance of international markets.

Creative Writing: An introductionSchool of Literature, Dramaand Creative Writing

The aim of this module is to getstudents writing prose fiction andpoetry, and assumes littleprevious experience of creativewriting. At this stage it’s importantto experiment: not everything willcome off, but you will learn fromthat. Along the way you’ll begin todevelop an understanding of thecraft elements of writing – thetechnical nuts & bolts. You will also acquire some of thedisciplines necessary to being awriter – observation, keepingnotebooks, writing in drafts,reading as a writer, andsubmitting to deadlines. Studentswill undertake a number of in-class exercises based onobjects, handouts,discussion andvisualisation, with theopportunity tostudy the workof establishedauthors.

Contemporary British TheatreSchool of Literature, Drama and Creative Writing

This module provides an insight into contemporaryBritish theatre, equipping students with a criticalvocabulary by means of a series of guided theatrevisits to current productions in the East Anglianregion and particularly in London. Students willexplore both classical and contemporary plays,with follow-up seminars conducted by a dramaspecialist from the University, and preceded by anintroduction, which will include talks by London-based theatre critics and directors and abackstage tour of a major theatre.

This module includes a two-week residency inLondon. A supplementary fee applies.

Digital Animation: Principles and practiceSchool of ComputingSciences

Understanding 3D modelling andanimation is essential for muchwork in digital media. Students will gain an understanding of theissues involved in the creation of3D models and their use to createimages and animations. They will gain practical experience increating 3D models and modifyingthem in a number of ways usingthe industry standard software,Autodesk 3ds Max. They will learnhow to apply a range of texturesand surfaces to the objects, andhow to add lighting for realism and special effects.

Future MedicineNorwich Medical School

This module is designed to help students develop anunderstanding of some of the recent breakthroughs inmedical science and their effect of global changesthat are impacting on health care. Through seminarsessions, presentations and fieldtrips students willdevelop an increased scientific knowledge of specificareas related to medicine. In addition they will take a critical approach to provide a reasonedargument, engage in discussions and debates on a range of topics such as stem cells, globalised healthcare andpharmacogenomics, and finallyexplore the ethical implications ofsuch future developments.

Global Media andCommunications LawSchool of Law

This module explores the challengeposed by the ‘information society’ andincreasingly globalised and integrated mediaindustries. Many have predicted that theInternet will make borders less relevant, yet manystates continue to regulate both established media aswell as new media. International organisations identifyfreedom of expression as a key component of democracy,but also express concern. Topics covered will include mediaregulation, electronic commerce, human rights, globalgovernance of the Internet, and disputes between states as to theextent to which national laws apply to transnational messages andtransactions. Students will be introduced to innovative research andencouraged to discuss the legal systems of their own nations.

Managing PeopleNorwich Business School

Effective Human Resource Management(HRM) practice is a critical strategic tool inbusinesses gaining sustainable competitiveadvantage; one that is becoming increasinglyimportant in the labour market’s “War forTalent”. This module provides the knowledgeand understanding required regarding thenature of HRM and how it operates inorganisations, outlining the organisationalimportance of creating a performancemanagement culture aligned to strategicbusiness objectives.

This module includes a two-week residencyin London. A supplementary fee applies.

Psychology in ActionSchool of Psychology

This module is concerned with theapplication of psychological knowledge,methods, and practise in everyday life.Sessions will cover an exciting spectrumof issues including the history of appliedpsychology from Greek ideas concerningself-insight to contemporary notions ofself-help; developmental psychology and the use of psychological ideas ineducation; the demise of the notion of ushaving privileged access to our mentalstates and the concomitant rise of thetalking cure; persuasive communication inadvertising; the public understanding ofpsychology; psychology and the law;psychometric testing; and thepsychopharmacology ofcommon and legal drugs.

Plague and Disease in the Medieval CitySchool of History

This is an interdisciplinarymodule which examines thehealth and illnesses of theurban population in Englandand Northern Europe duringthe later Middle Ages. By usingthe unparalleled riches ofNorwich’s medieval buildingsand landscapes, students willinvestigate standards of livingalongside patterns of diseaseand the relative effectiveness ofboth individual and corporateactions in halting the spread ofplague within the medieval city.

Video Journalism and Media Studies: Theory & practiceSchool of Political, Social and International Studies

The module begins with a practical workshop in Video Journalism,dealing with the production of news for Broadcast or Online outlets.Students will learn about reporting skills, interviewing, pieces to camera,report structure, camera operation, scriptwriting and editorial aspects ofTV news production. The module then moves on to introduce competingapproaches to, and the theories of, media studies more generally. Topicscovered will include contemporary celebrity culture, media and identity,war and the media, representations of political rhetoric and argument, freespeech, and different media systems.

Understanding BusinessNorwich Business School

This is an introductory module forstudents interested in gaining a goodbasic understanding of BusinessManagement. The course provides a broadperspective on the world of business and the activities of managers who drive thesebusinesses forward. Businesses include a broadrange of organisations from for profit to socialenterprises. The course also provides insight into thedifferent structures and functions of business which itselfoffers an excellent insight into personal career development.

Accommodation

Nido Student Living

Students selecting a modulewhich includes a two-weekresidency in London will transferto accommodation at NidoStudent Living in the heart of thecapital. A couple of minutes walkfrom London Liverpool StreetStation and next to UEA Londonwhere learning will take place,Nido provides sophisticated livingin private rooms with high speedinternet connections. Each roomhas a bed with storage, closet,bean bag, desk and chair and is in either a shared or twin apartment with sharedshower room, separate toilet andkitchen facilities. A supplementaryfee applies for students selectinga module with a two-weekLondon residency.

Accommodation will be in fullyfurnished residences on theUniversity of East Anglia’s maincampus. Each student will behoused in a private room in ashared flat of 8 to 12 people witha centrally shared kitchen/diningarea which contains a refrigerator,freezer, and oven or microwave,as well as a large dining table andchairs. Each room contains plentyof storage, a single bed, internetaccess and a walk-in bathroomequipped with a shower, toiletand sink. Flats are clean and light,and offer more than enoughspace for comfortable living. Awide range of excellent facilitiesincluding shops, banks, andplaces to eat, drink and socialiseare all in the centre of campus.

Area information

Norwich is one of the top fiveshopping destinations inBritain. The city has twomultiplex cinemas, one of thefinest art house cinemas inthe East of England, and sixtheatres. In addition to theUniversity’s renowned livemusic venue, the city hostsconcerts from all genres aswell as comedy nightsthroughout the week.

Norwich is close to some ofthe most popular touristareas in the country. The verydifferent seaside resorts ofCromer, well known for theCromer crab and seasidespectacular shows on thepier; Southwold, famed for its fish and chips andlighthouse; and GreatYarmouth, for its funfair andamusement strip, all havewonderful beaches and areperfect for day trips by busor train.

Assessment & Eligibility

AssessmentAll modules are assessed by courseworkand accredited at 20 UK undergraduatelevel 2 credits. Students are continuallyassessed by academic staff and this may bethrough class tests, group critical analysis, seminarcontribution, academic fieldwork, laboratory test,presentation or assignment. Students are expected toattend a minimum of 80% of classes and to carry outadvance preparatory reading as advised. Assessment methodsfor each module can be found in each full module outline atwww.uea.ac.uk/summerstudyabroad/modules.

EligibilityStudents must be at least 18years of age and currentlyenrolled in higher education at agood standing university orcollege with a minimum gradepoint average of 3.0 (orequivalent). Where English is notthe first language an English skilllevel at or equivalent to IELTS 6.5is required.

VisasA student visitor visa is requiredfor nationals of countries outside theEuropean Economic Area (EEA) andSwitzerland attending a short course inthe UK. Students from visa nationalcountries who enter the UK for less than 6months’ study can obtain a visitor visa at customson arrival in the UK or through an applicationprocess prior to departure from their home country.Students from non-visa national countries mustapply for and receive a student visitor visa beforedeparting from their home country. Full informationregarding visas and immigration can be found atwww.ukba.homeoffice.gov.uk/. It is a compulsoryrequirement to show visa documentation toUniversity officials upon arrival.

InsuranceFull medical and travel insurance is mandatory forall University of East Anglia visiting students andstudents are expected to gain appropriate coverbefore departing for the UK.

Fees for our 2013 InternationalSummer School are inclusive of:
