After graduating with a degree in German and Swedish Ian worked in the UK export industry for some years before taking up a lecturing post in Scandinavian Studies at the University of Aberystwyth (Wales) and later the University of Hull. Following this he taught at a private school in Norway for four years but was attracted to Sweden by the challenges of working as Corporate Language Coordinator at IKEA. Ian was subsequently the copywriter for all IKEA’s UK catalogues throughout the 1990s. Today he is a translator and copywriter at AB Språkman. Ian was one of the founders of SFÖ (the Swedish Professional Translators’ Association) and is also a member of SELTA (the Swedish-English Literary Translators’ Association). He has written numerous articles and several books about language and translation, most recently 101 Things a Translator Needs to Know. In 2004 Ian and his co-author Philip Holmes were awarded the Swedish Language Council’s Wellander Prize for their Comprehensive

Swedish Grammar.
