Presentation Notes
Overall, we have seen broad visitation growth over the past decade. Every country has its ups and downs. Mexico and Canada will always set the tone. We had several years of declining visitation from Mexico, which has significant impacts on Arizona, so last year’s 5% increase was a very welcome sight. Canadian visitation also increased by about 50,000 visits in 2018.

As the global travel market has grown, so have the number of destinations that we are competing with. Despite that, Arizona’s US market share of international visitors has been fairly steady since the recession.

Out of the top 15 US state destinations, Arizona has grown international visitation 10% since 2013. In context, that’s faster growth than Nevada, Hawaii, and even Florida, but we haven’t quite kept pace with the growth experienced by California and Texas.

Total estimated spending by market has its ups and downs as well, but the most obvious thing that jumps out, again, is the growth from China in dark blue. They have a ways to go before their visitor numbers surpass the UK, Germany and France, but they are now the top overseas spender in Arizona.

Presentation Notes
Profile data doesn’t really change as drastically year to year as spending or visitation numbers. It doesn’t fluctuate with currency changes or economic conditions, so a lot of this is very similar to what you may have seen before.

Data Sources

Presenter
Presentation Notes
I’ll be talking about Canada separately from overseas markets, and the reason for that is that the data comes from different sources. They’re both surveys, but the Survey of International Air Travelers is conducted in airports with the intention of intercepting travelers just prior to their return flight. Xborder Canada is an online panel survey that looks back at travel that occurred that year or quarter. The surveys have different sampling methods, they ask different questions, and in different ways which is why I’m separating them here.
Page 16: International Visitation to Arizona · International Visitation to Arizona Presenting YE 2018 Data. Hello everyone, and welcome to AOT’s 2019 presentation of international travel

Travel Paths

Presenter
Presentation Notes
So we’ll start with overseas. One of the things I like about the Survey of International Air travelers is that it covers a little bit about all the different destinations that overseas travelers visit while they are in the United States. This is not a perfect measurement. They talk to people at airports around the country, but not at every airport, and most significant for us, the sample at Sky Harbor is limited. I’m happy to share the actual tables that we get from NTTO, so you can always reach out with questions. But what we do get is a look into what airports most of them fly into, how intense and how varied their itineraries can be, and where in Arizona they tend to travel.

They really tend to stay in the Northern part of the state, and our Visa spending data backs this up. 84% report that they visited the Flagstaff-Grand Canyon-Sedona area. Only 15% reported that they made it to Phoenix, and only 1.5% reported visiting Tucson. Does this mean that no one from France visits Tucson? Absolutely not. It’s one of the reasons that we use multiple data sources when they are available.

When we look at Visa card spending, there is activity in all five regions. And even though only 15% reported visiting Phoenix, almost 30% of the spending happened in the Central region. So it’s nice to pair survey data with behavioral data like credit card transactions to create a fuller picture. A large proportion of French visitors tend to follow a similar pattern when they travel to the Western United States.

Almost a fourth of Japanese travel is for business, one in ten Chinese visitors are here for education, which also explains the high rates of visiting friends and relatives travel. There are lots of parents of university students visiting. The connection between education and Chinese visitation to Arizona is a really strong one. Only about half of Chinese visitors to Arizona are here for purely leisure purposes, and they have the lowest rate of vacation/holiday trips among our markets.

Ideally we want to know when travelers arrive in Arizona, but the SIAT isn’t really set up that way. So this chart details the month of their return flight to give us a general sense of when they are traveling.

Last year we welcomed 975,000 Canadian visitors. The long-term trend has really been one of growth, but we did see some decline in 2016, and are starting to suspect slowing for 2019.

Since we compete with all the other US states, we have managed to grow market share to 3.2% of all Canadian visits to the United States. And when I mentioned that we saw a drop in 2016, we maintained market share because Canadians just weren’t traveling to the US that much in that year.

Presentation Notes
It used to be that Alberta was our top market in Canada, but over the years, Ontario and British Columbia are seeing higher rates of travel to Arizona. I do want to take this cautiously for now though. This is our first year with a new survey, and there have been some pretty big changes. The shift from Alberta to BC and Ontario makes sense to me, but what looks really different is the drop in visitation from Quebec from 19% last year to 7% this year. Next year, the sample size on this survey will be much bigger, and my hope is that we will be able to reliably tease out the differences between the provinces.

Sampling Plan

Presenter
Presentation Notes
We will be surveying visitors at all six land ports of entry and Sky Harbor. We are also surveying bus lines, which is new since the last study. For this study, surveying within the port of entry was not feasible for safety and logistical reasons. Our solution is to intercept visitors at gas stations as close to the border as possible and along pedestrian walkways near the gates. This also has the added benefit of speaking with survey respondents in a more relaxed atmosphere, and we’ve found that people have been very willing to speak with us. The map you see here shows the goal number of surveys to be collected at each port of entry based on the number of crossings.
Page 77: International Visitation to Arizona · International Visitation to Arizona Presenting YE 2018 Data. Hello everyone, and welcome to AOT’s 2019 presentation of international travel
Presenter
Presentation Notes
The survey team is fully bilingual, which was a requirement, and so far most of the interviews have been conducted in Spanish.
