Introduction The Florida Consortium of International Education (FCIE) organized a series of meetings during the 2014-2015 academic year to discuss the design and alignment of student learning outcomes for the Global Certificate/ Global Distinction programs that were being developed simultaneously in several state colleges. A survey conducted in early 2015 through Community Colleges for International Development (CCID) and other networks generated an initial report on Global Certificate programs in the state and offered some comparative data by documenting existing programs in other parts of the nation (http://www.gclc.net/reports/). Although the report informed the conversation about these nascent programs, it also made evident that any effort to advance international education in Florida would require a more specific and comprehensive data set highlighting what was occurring in the state. The state of the field reports generated by California Colleges for International Education (CCIE)
provided an excellent model for the kind of comprehensive gathering and reporting of information
needed in Florida. CCIE has administered a survey on international education to California community
colleges since 1985 (www.ccieworld.org). The data gathered through this instrument has produced a
state of the field report that provides a thorough overview of study abroad programming and
enrollment, curriculum internationalization, international student recruitment, and degree of
institutional support for international initiatives in California’s community colleges.
The survey used to generate the current report is a modified version of the CCIE state of the field survey for Directors of International Education. The modified survey was administered in April 2015 to senior academic affairs officers in the 28 institutions that form part of the Florida Colleges System and enjoyed a response rate of 71%. The results represent the first data set on comprehensive internationalization in the Florida College System and can be used as baseline data for measuring progress in this field. Additionally, the survey results can facilitate a state-to-state comparative analysis of the state of internationalization in California and Florida. It is hoped that the results of this survey will generate a vigorous, state-wide conversation about internationalization in the Florida College System, its intended goals, common learning outcomes, most appropriate tactics, and areas for improvement.
Acknowledgements We would like to thank Dr. Rosalind Raby, Director of California Colleges for International Education
(CCIE), who so generously made the CCIE survey available to us.
