ACADEMIC ADVISING
Our Academic Advisor guides students who are interested in applying to a
college or university in the United States. Every quarter students can attend an
information session to assist them in understanding the American university
system. Additionally, a College Fair is held twice a year so students can
obtain information and application materials from representatives of the many
colleges and universities in San Diego.
On average, students move up one core level per session.Exceptional students may sometimes advance two levels.

In the University Preparation Academy(UPA), I developed specific skills that will be
imperative during my MBA program. This
preparation will make a positive impact in
my performance and confidence, because
when the MBA classes begin I will be
focusing on learning my field and not on
adapting to the American university culture
and study skills requirements. My main
professor in the UPA program is not only the
most prepared teacher I have had, but also
the one that has helped me the most in the
tough process of preparing for success in amasters program. In addition to studying, I
had an amazing experience taking part in a
5K running course through the UC San Diego
campus. It was a full-moon night and all the
buildings were beautifully illuminated. The
view and the environment were fantastic
and I had an exhilarating time.

Advisory AboutVariable EnrollmentsEnrollment numbers in our Academic, Conversation,
and Conversation and Fluency programs vary greatly
from month to month. If our placement tests indicatethat a students English proficiency level does not
permit placement in the original 2- or 4-week program
class, we may place the student in 2 or 4 weeks of
study in a corresponding 4-week or 10-week program,
or we may provide a combination of classes to ensure
a full-time program of 20 hours per week for 2 or 4
weeks. Alternatively, we may decide to place all 2- or
4-week program students in level-appropriate classes
in a corresponding 4-week or 10-week program in
order to provide a program of 20 hours per week for
2 or 4 weeks. When this happens the students 2- or
4-week program will have the features described forthe new 4- or 10-week program, not the features
described for the original program. The tuition and
fees for the students 2- or 4-week program enrollment
will remain the same.

Im a pharmaceutical student and one of my
goals is to be able to discuss medical issues
in English. In that regard, Medical English
was extremely helpful to me. Not only did
it provide me with basic medical knowledge
and vocabulary, but also deep insights on
a lot of medical topics, such as health care
programs of several countries, the most
common diseases in several countries,
and so on. Only a few English Language
Institutes have this course and I am certain
I made the best choice among them.

APPLYING FOR UNDERGRADUATE ADMISSION TO UC SAN DIEGO
It is difficult to enter UC San Diego as a foreign student in the first year. It is much easier to transfer from aCalifornia community college (after two years of study) into the third year at UC San Diego. In recent years
over 90% of transfer students come from California community colleges. This is the best pathway to under-
graduate UC San Diego admission for most international students.
For more information on undergraduate admission to UC San Diego, visit internationaladmissions.ucsd.edu.
Students interested in taking UC San Diego or Extension courses should see the University Preparation Academy
(page 9), the UPS program (pages 14-15), Business Certificate programs (pages 17-21), or the TEFL Certificate

Business Certificate Programs Overview
BUSINESS ESSENTIAlS
INTERMEDIATE BUSINESS ESSENTIAlS
BUSINESS MANAgEMENT
PROjECT MANAgEMENT
These business programs are designed specifically to add breadth and depth to your
existing knowledge and skills and help you achieve your professional goals.
Starting in 2015, the business department is pleased to offer four programs:
The popular Business Management andBusiness Essentialscertificate programs offer students theopportunity to build job skills and knowledge or to prepare for graduate studies through an extensive
introduction to U.S. business practices. To complement the classroom experience, internships are incorporated
into both of these business programs, allowing each student the opportunity to apply what is learned in an
American workplace and gain a competitive edge in the global job market.
Given the increased demand for project managers worldwide, the business department offers an intensive
certificate program in Project Managementthat can be completed in two quarters.
Intermediate Business Essentials, is designed for the student who has earned a Bachelors degree and
possesses a high-level proficiency in English. This post-baccalaureate, enriched business training option
consists of one, two or three quarters of study.
All Business Certificate Programs
1. Can I apply withoutall the requireddocuments?
No. You will need to wait to apply until you have all the required documents. The only exceptionis if you have all the required
documents except the language score AND you are currently attending the UC San Diego Extension English Language Institute (ELI).
Only students who attend UCSD-ELI can apply for conditional acceptance to the business certificate programs.
2. What is conditionalacceptance?
It means you are provisionally accepted based on all requirements except for the language score. This is strictly for students currently
attending a 10-week English language program at UC San Diego Extension ELI. An acceptable language score is still required before you
will be fully accepted.
3. Is there a deadlineto apply?
Given the popularity of the programs, it is recommended to submit the application FIVE months in advance for the Business Essentials
program and THREE months in advance for the other business programs. Admission is competitive, and not all applicants are admitted
to the program. NO APPLICATIONS WILL BE ACCEPTED WITHIN THE FINAL TEN DAYS BEFORE A PROGRAMS START-DATE.
4. Is a car required? Yes, access to a car or other reliable transportation is required, as some classes (day and/or evening) are located at the off-campusUC San Diego Extension facility (University City Center), which has very limited or no public transportation.
5. Can I add an extraquarter after I arrive?
Yes; however, if the student requests and is approved for a longer program, the student must pay a $500 USD Business Program
Extension fee, plus any additional tuition required for the longer program. However, if the student requests and is approved for a longer
program during the first week of classes in his/her first quarter, the Business Department will waive the $500 Program Extension fee.
If you are an international student with advancedEnglish language proficiency, and you are lookingto launch or accelerate your career in business,
then these business programs are just what youneed to acquire the expertise necessary toadvance in your career.
