Internet2 WaveCo

• WaveCo provides Internet2 members cost-effective access to long-term dedicated wavelengths on an extensive nationwide and metropolitan footprint covering more than 33,000 miles of optical fiber.

• With recent acquisitions (some still in progress), potential to reach beyond Level 3 footprint (long-haul, metro):

Telcove, ICG, LookingGlass

Internet2 WaveCo – cont.

• National-scale aggregated rates• Cost effective for regional networks that want to extend their

reach with varying demands for circuit capacity or duration. • available to RONs to reach members where dark fiber isn’t

cost-effectivePricing:• On-Level 3 to On-Level 3: per contract, priced at Level

3’s best commercial rate• On-Level 3 to Off-Level 3: per contract, priced at Level

3’s third-party costs +15% (OC-X) or +25% (DS-X)

WaveCo and New Internet2 Network

• WaveCo waves are different than New Internet2 Network Waves

• Once New network is built – over that footprint, waves can be significantly more cost-effective

• Short-term and longer-term dedicated wave services over NewNet – once built –can be offered from the get-go.

• See slides on New Network services – or contact Steve Cotter <[email protected]>

Some maps

• Caveats: all maps show [public] footprints that were in place BEFORE Level 3 buy out

• Put maps that may interest the SURA region• Some acquisitions have NOT closed: LookingGlass,

Progress• Some just closed: TelCove (WilTel back in Dec 05)

• May still be some time before we know what footprints may look like

• Can offer WaveCo services on those that have closed • Dark fiber is a possibility but dependant on level 3 and

acquiree determining so - may be some time before we know what routes are being kept and at what price they may be available

Internet2 FiberCo

• FiberCo’s mission is to serve the Internet2 research and education community by providing means and tools for the acquisition of dark fiber, as well as providing professional services to assist in managing and operating optical and networking infrastructure investments made by the community

• Initiated in 2003 to support optical initiatives in US R&E

Dark fiber service offerings

• Provides a means for community to acquire dark fiber

• By aggregating demand, negotiated deeply discounted rates

• Became dark fiber market maker • As of Spring 2006, over 13,000 miles

assigned to members, played a part in other fiber acquisitions

Dark fiber service offerings – cont.

• 2 yr continuation of original Level 3 agreement• Same 20 yr IRU contract as before• Same O&M contract – 5 yr renewable terms

• Dark fiber footprint expanded (beyond Level 3 original footprint):

• includes WilTel, ICG, Progress, Telcove and LookingGlassfiber

• Long-haul fiber – 33,000 route miles• 150 markets

• Metro fiber – 22,000 route miles• 110 markets• Over 5,000 on-net buildings
