    Introduction

    There are many exciting internship opportunities at AHRC New York City.Internships are offered through various universities primarily in or around NewYork City, such as Columbia University, NYU, Hunter College, FordhamUniversity, St. John's University, as well as Duke University in North Carolina.

    The goal of the Internship Program at AHRC is to provide educationally soundplacements so that the organization can introduce students to the challengesfaced by persons with developmental disabilities, and attract talented,dedicated professionals to the field.

    AHRC offers interns the opportunity to work with individuals of all ages whohave varying degrees of developmental delays and disabilities. Whetherproviding services to preschool children, adolescents, adults, or senior citizens,interns will be working alongside AHRC staff that is knowledgeable about thebest practices used in the field.

    By taking part in the Internship Program at AHRC, Interns will gain hands onexperience providing services to individuals with disabilities and related servicesin the field. Interns will also have the opportunity to take part in both generaland program specific training sessions offered at AHRC New York City.

    For over sixty years, AHRC has been offering services to people withdevelopmental disabilities as well as to their families. The Department of Familyand Clinical Services, of which Psychological Services forms an integral part, isone of the largest outpatient clinics in New York City focused on providingservices to persons with developmental disabilities.

    As part of their training, psychology interns can expect to become involved in anumber of service delivery programs including:

    Outpatient mental health servicesInterdisciplinary assessment servicesRehabilitation services for persons with traumatic brain injuryCrisis intervention services provided via a mobile team

    As part of an interdisciplinary team, psychology interns will interact with abroad range of professionals including physicians, social workers, nurses,speech and language pathologists, occupational therapists and physicaltherapists.

    The Training Model Over a twelve month period, interns are providedwith opportunities of graduated complexity to develop expertise and effectiveintervention skills in the areas of psychopathology and developmentaldisabilities via exposure to experiences of graduated complexity and quantity.The goal of training skilled independent professional psychologists is achievedvia a program of individual mentoring, group supervision and exposure to case

    studies and formal clinical presentations by experts in the field.

    TRAINING OBJECTIVES

    The predoctoral psychology internship program at AHRC was established in1995 with the goal of training professional psychologists in the field ofdevelopmental disabilities. Accreditation of the program by the AmericanPsychological Association (APA) was granted in 1998. The programs currentstatus is accredited on probation with a site visit scheduled for the spring of2011.

    The programs mission, in accord with AHRCs overall mission, which is toprovide psychology graduate students with the opportunity to grow from a levelof the mastery of basic concepts of evaluation and treatment of

    psychopathology to an awareness of, and eventually expertise in, thoseconcepts and how they apply to individuals with developmental disabilities andtheir families. By the completion on an internship, an intern is prepared toindependently assess and treat these individuals as well as work effectively inconcert with other treating professionals from medical, rehabilitative,educational and other mental health disciplines.

    The model of the psychology internship program is best summarized in terms ofa professional psychology training model. Interns are selected through thematching procedures of the Association of Psychology Postdoctoral andInternship Centers APPIC). Applicants must be approved by their graduateprogram as being ready for predoctoral internship, have completed 1000 hoursof practicum experience 500 hours of which involves face to face contact withclients. A minimum of five psychological evaluations which include assessmentof cognitive functioning is recommended

    Emphasis is placed on the development of skills in assessment, intervention,interdisciplinary collaboration and consultation. In addition, it is the objective ofthe program that the intern develop expertise in the ability to evaluate and useresearch which is relevant to the interns professional development and clinicalpractice. Finally, it is expected that over the course of the internship the internwill grow in self knowledge and self identification as a psychologist in a mannerwhich will enable the individual to function effectively and experience personalgratification in the role of psychologist.

    Interns are required to complete a year as a full time member ofthe Department of Family and Clinical Services staff under thesupervision of licensed psychologists. Positions for three internsare regular lines in the departments annual budget. Each internwill have assignments in outpatient clinics, a day program forindividuals with developmental disabilities and on a crisisintervention/in home behavior management team. Interns receiveevaluations at three months, six months and 11 months of theinternship. Minimum competencies are established for each skillarea and required for successful completion of the program

    Supervision Supervision of interns will be provided on several levels:

    Interns will be assigned one supervisor for the year who will each provide aminimum of two hours of individual supervision per week.

    At least one hour per week of group supervision focused on review ofevaluation and treatment cases

    A weekly one hour group supervision for long term treatment cases is provided.

    An hour per week of additional supervision in specialized areas such as crisismanagement, substance abuse, etc.

    Interns will participate in weekly departmental meetings devoted topresentations provided by multiple disciplinary in-house and outside staff.

    The Population Served AHRCs mission is to serve persons withdevelopmental disabilities and their families. In carrying out this mandate,psychology interns can expect to work with an ethnically and socially diversepopulation of service recipients only some of whom have disabilities. Theseinclude:

    Children, adolescents and adults with developmental disabilities

    Non-disabled siblings and other family members individuals with traumaticbrain injury

    Various clinical and paraprofessional service providers

    Remuneration Pre-Doctoral level psychology interns are paid as employeesof AHRC and are eligible for all benefits available to full-time staff, includingsick leave, paid holidays, vacation and health insurance. Currently, full-timeinterns are paid an annual salary of $15,000. Four weeks of paid vacation aregenerally taken in August.

    Application Procedure

    Prerequisites for application: Applicants are expected to havecompleted all required academic and practicum work prior to beginning theinternship. Applicants must be registered in an APA-approved doctoral programin clinical or counseling psychology. This requirement may be waived forindividuals enrolled in an equivalent program. We consider applicants for allpositions without regard to race, religion, creed, color, gender, national origin,citizenship status, age, disability, marital or veteran status, sexual orientation,or any other legally protected status.

    with individual parents, and provide outreach to families that are difficult toengage; Represent the families' needs and concerns to the child study team;Conduct interviews to update social histories and conduct initial social historyinterviews; Interns may facilitate play therapy with the students

    Special Education Internships Elementary, Midde & High Schoolteachers

    Interns Will:Conduct discrete trials using ABA and other similar teaching approaches;Provide academic or vocational instruction; Provide training in activities of daily living; Workwith the teachers in developing lesson and unit plans and later taking the lead indeveloping and presenting lesson plans

    Music Therapy Interns in Special Education Schools

    Interns will:Help integrate music into classroom lesson plans; Take the lead inpresenting music based lesson; Assist staff in incorporating music intoclassroom activities; Work with groups and with individual children to help themuse music to acquire the skills necessary for self regulation and emotionalstability; Work with classes and groups to help students prepare musicalpresentations for graduation and special occasions; Conduct instructionalgroups for parents to help them integrate the strategies of music therapy intohome life

    Art Therapist Interns in Special Education Schools

    Interns will: Help to integrate art into lesson plans; Take the lead in presenting art basedlessons; Help the staff to incorporate art into classroom activities; Work with groups andindividual students to help them use art to acquire the skills necessary for self regulationand emotional stability; Work with groups and classes to help them prepare material forpresentation; Conduct instructional groups for parents to help them incorporate thestrategies of art therapy into home life

    School Psychology InternsInterns will:Work with individual students and with groups of students on

    attaining IEP goals and the goals identified by the child study teams; Work withthe psychologist, teachers, and therapists in developing effective classroomstrategies; Assist in performing functional analyses and developing behaviorplans; Maintain session notes; May have the opportunity to participate in andfacilitate parent training sessions; May assist in the assessment of studentswho may need psychological services

    School Speech Therapy Interns

    Interns will:Work with individual students and groups of students on achieving IEP goals;
