Executive SummaryVideo gaming is considered an important driver for the first wave of 3D TV adoption, as it was for other new consumer technologies such as HDTVs and Blu-ray players (through Playstation 3 integration). However, without a large installed base, game publishers are less inclined to make the additional investment in producing games in 3D, especially since there is a trade-off between resolution and 3D support.
The encouraging news is that the marketing efforts from Hollywood, TV manufacturers, and retailers have paid off. Consumer awareness and experience of various 3D content and technologies grew significantly between Q1 and Q3 2010. Consequently, consumer purchase intent for 3D TVs increased from 13% to 21% during the same period. Among those already planning to buy a new TV in the next 12 months, 35% are interested in buying a 3D TV (PS3 owners significantly over-index among these intenders). Consumers are primarily driven to 3D by the enhanced entertainment experience (they want to enjoy at home what they experienced in movie theaters), although a significant percentage of 3DTV intenders are interested because of the perceived “coolness” of new technologies and in order to future-proof. On the other hand, primary inhibitors include high cost compared to regular HDTVs, the need to wear glasses (and purchase multiple glasses for the family), and fear of bugs in first-generation products. Lack of content is not a primary concern as consumers understand that 3D content will proliferate once more households have capable devices.
In addition to marketing investment, key stakeholders in the 3D industry must launch concerted educational efforts. Consumers are very confused about 3D, which can hamper consumer demand. A large percentage of consumers either don’t know or have the wrong perception of what is required for 3D entertainment at home. In addition, the incompatibility of 3D glasses and 3D TVs from different manufacturers could potentially cause consumer backlash; even among the small percentage of consumers who claim to be knowledgeable, only a quarter know about the incompatibility issue.
Despite these challenges, consumers genuinely enjoy the 3D experience. Less than 20% of consumers think 3D is a gimmick. The percentage of consumers who prefer 3D over 2D is growing across content types, including gaming. One half of all consumers (not just gamers) prefer gaming in 3D over 2D. Gaming ranks lower than movies alone in driving purchase intention for a 3D TV—49% of all 3D TV intenders rated gaming as very important in their consideration of a 3DTV. Gamers not only enjoy the enhanced experience rendered by stereoscopic 3D games, but also believe that 3D might give them a competitive edge. Naturally, FPS and other core games are the most preferred genres for 3D gaming. However, the Nintendo 3DS could be a big X-factor. With its auto-stereoscopic feature (glasses-free), mass-market price point, large library of 3D games at launch, and support of 3D video playback, the 3DS is very likely to become the first mass-market device to offer consumers a 3D entertainment experience outside of movie theaters.
