Intervention Design Process Model (IDPM)

1. Select and analyse an area of interest. 2. Apply theory and describe the clash between

the old and new paradigms. 3. Identify the problem in terms of environment,

media and target group. 4. Investigate how the problem would be solved

using normal/current design. 5. Investigate how the problem would be solved

using new ideas and insights. 6. Compare both and design an intervention. 7. Test and evaluate the intervention design.

2. apply theory

Page 15: Intervention Design workshop #3 at MAMDT Maastricht

you can use mcluhan’s advice: don’t drown in the media mahlström

Page 16: Intervention Design workshop #3 at MAMDT Maastricht

observe, take distance, find patterns

Page 17: Intervention Design workshop #3 at MAMDT Maastricht

laws of media tetrad (1988)

Enhances: brain, central

nervous system, directness,

nonlinearity, simultaneous,

always on

Obsolesces: hierarchy, linearity,

objectivityRetrieves: acoustic space, togetherness,

tribes, network

Reverses: anomy, void, nothingness,

hyperreal

Page 20: Intervention Design workshop #3 at MAMDT Maastricht

try to use the four laws of media with city gardening

Page 21: Intervention Design workshop #3 at MAMDT Maastricht

!!

• brainstorm about interesting developments in our current society

• select an area you are going to research • use trend piramide and DESTEP to describe

that area • use media theory to describe the area in depth

and where the world is heading to • describe the paradigms of our current world

and of the new world (and their clash) !

now take steps #1 and #2 of IDPM

Page 22: Intervention Design workshop #3 at MAMDT Maastricht

remember: you haven’t choose a problem/situation yet! that’s step #3
