INTERVIEWEE: Martin Hachquet Interviewer: Gretchen Skivington Location: Las Vegas, Nevada Date ofinteviw: May 4, 20 14 Audio: 1 Length: 2:00 + Language; English Summary and index: Gretchen Skivington

1. SUMMARY

Martin Hachquet was born 5-23-28 to Martin Hachquet and Ana Sorhondo, both French Basque immigrants to Elko, Nevada in the 1920s. Pet Itcaina (important Elko Co. sheepman) paid Martin Sr.'s passage from Urdepel France in early 1920s. He met Ana Sorhondo at the Overland Hotel where was an indentured maid in 1925 her first day in Elko. They married Aug 25, 1925. Son, Martin was born 5-23-28. Martin Jr. states "He (Martin Sr.) never wanted to talk about the old country again and didn 't. He was a proud American." Parents both grew up in poverty, but did well with hard work in Elko. Ana, his mother, took in Basque kids so Martin Jr. (an only child) knew everybody. He and the first Basque Softball Team actually started the momentum to start the Elko Basque Club and organized the resultant "Arrinak" Dancers and National Basque Festival. Elko was a vigorous and "very Basque" place to live in. "Most people were Basque. At least 50%".
