concerts, festivals, movies and more will keep the summer heating up in South Florida.

This August, there will be many outdoor activities to enjoy the warm weather with friends and indoor events to help you cool down from the heat.

Kick your month off with the SunTrust Sunday Jazz Brunch. This free, live, outdoor concert series, which is located on Fort Lauderdale’s sce-nic Riverwalk, delivers the area’s best local jazz artists. Listen to the soulful sounds on four dif-ferent stages on the first Sunday of each month from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Everyone is welcome to attend, including well-behaved, leashed pets. There is plenty of room to set up chairs, blankets and picnic baskets to experience the fabulous entertainment. Patrons can also stroll along the historic brick-lined walkway to enjoy live music while browsing items from local merchants and enjoying food from area restaurants. This is the perfect event for the summer!

The Museum of Art Fort Lauderdale will host Mambo at the Museum Cuban Dance Lesson with IFE-ILE Afro-Cuban on August 14th from 6:30 pm to 7:30 pm. Cuban dance originates from Spanish and African settlers who brought music and dances of their homelands with them to Cuba. View The Miami Generation Revisited and practice the Mambo, Cha-Cha, Bolero, Son, Danzón and more with instructors from IFE-ILE Afro-Cuban Dance, the Miami-based organization dedicated to the preservation of Afro-Cuban culture through dance. The event is free with museum admission. For more information, contact moareserva-

[email protected] or 954-262-0227.

Rock the night away at the Rock ‘N’ Blues Fest on August 15th at 7 pm at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts, located at 201 SW 5 Ave, Fort Lauderdale. Giants of rock and blues, Johnny Winter Band, Edgar Winter Band, Vanilla Fudge, Peter Rivera (Rare Earth) and Kim Sim-monds (Savoy Brown), bring hot fun in the sum-mertime to the Broward Center with the Rock ‘N’ Blues Fest. Joining Johnny for the Rock ‘N’ Blues “ride” will be his younger brother, Edgar Winter, with his monster FM radio hit “Free Ride” and the chart-topping rocker “Frankenstein.” The rock band Vanilla Fudge features original members Mark Stein on organ, lead guitarist Vince Martell, drummer Carmine Appice and bassist Pete Bremy. Get ready to rock with “You Keep Me Hangin’ On,” a slowed-down, trippy, hard-rock cover of a song originally recorded by The Supremes, which features Appice’s energetic drumming. Admission runs from $25 to $65. For more information, call 954-462-0222.

Laugh with friends for a good cause! ‘Laugh-ing Out Loud for Scleroderma’ will be held on August 15 at 6:30 p.m. at the Improv Comedy Club & Dinner Theatre, located at 5700 Seminole Way, Hollywood. A private comedy performance with cocktails and hors d’oeuvres will feature

nationally acclaimed comedian, Dom Irrera, who headlines a night of side-splitting stand up comedy. There will also be post-show desserts and drinks at Sirocco Mediterranean Restaurant & Lounge, across from The Improv. Scleroderma is an autoimmune disease that affects about 300,000 people in the United States. The evening will benefit the Foundation’s Southeast Florida Chapter which provides services for members in the Broward, Miami-Dade, and Palm Beach counties. Sponsorship opportunities available; tickets are $100 per person. Call 954-798-1854 for more details.

Get taken on an adventure filled with great food and historical information that will keep you entertained all day! The Explore Las Olas Food Tour takes place every Tuesday and Thursday at 11:30 am and 6 pm at 901 E Las Olas Blvd. (Corner), Fort Lauderdale, FL 33301. This 3- hour tour is on Las Olas Blvd., the ‘Rodeo Drive’ of Fort Lauderdale. Explore museums and culture in South Florida for a great deal this summer! Lion Country Safari,

Miami Seaquarium, Museum of Discovery and Science in Fort Lauderdale and Zoo Miami will be offering a ‘Summer Savings Pass’. The pass will give pass holders unlimited admission to all four attractions throughout the summer, and will be valid for admission to each of the attractions until September 30, 2014. Lion Country Safari, Miami Seaquarium, and Zoo Miami will also have the passes for sale online on their websites: www.LionCountrySafari.com, www.miamiseaquarium.com, www.mods.org and www.zoomiami.org. Museum of Discovery and Science will have the passes available by phone at 954-713-0930, at $56 plus tax, per adult and $46 plus tax, per child (ages 3-12). For more information on the Sum-mer Savings Pass, visit www.summersavingspass.com.

The movies are also heating up with romance, action and lots of laughs. In the film, ‘And So It Goes’, there are a million reasons not to like real-tor Oren Little (Michael Douglas), and that’s just the way he likes it. Willfully obnoxious to anyone who might cross his path, he wants nothing more than to sell one last house and retire in peace and quiet -- until his estranged son suddenly drops off a granddaughter (Sterling Jerins) he never knew existed and turns his life upside-down. Clueless about how to care for a sweet,

abandoned nine-year-old, he pawns her off on his determined and lovable neighbor Leah (Diane Keaton) and tries to resume his life uninter-rupted. But little by little, Oren stubbornly learns to open his heart – to his family, to Leah, and to life itself. In ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’, in the far reaches of space, an American pilot named Peter Quill finds himself the object of a manhunt after stealing an orb coveted by the villainous Ronan. The movie, ‘Lucy’, centers on a drug mule who accidentally swallows her cargo and finds she now has superpowers. In the popular dance movie, ‘Step Up All In’, after struggling for a year to make it big in Hollywood, Sean’s (Ryan Guzman) dance crew gives up and moves back to Miami. Sean, not ready to relinquish his dream quite yet, remains in Los Angeles. When he hears about an upcoming dance competition in Las Ve-gas, Sean teams up with dance phenoms Andie (Briana Evigan) and Moose (Adam Sevani) to put together a new dance crew. Together with some old friends and some new faces, Sean and his crew are determined to win. Don’t miss ‘Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles’; Paramount Pictures and Michael Bay present this reboot of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles franchise with Wrath of the Titans’ helmer Jonathan Liebesman directing. Megan Fox stars as ace reporter, April O’Neil.

Bartender of the Month

What is your name? My Name is Matt but you can call me Mattuntapped. I started using that as my Instagram name and it just turned into my nickname!Where are you originally from? I’m originally from Clarkston. It’s a small town in MI and I moved down here almost three years ago.Where do you work? I work at Funky Buddha Brewery in Oakland ParkHow long have you been bartending? I have been Bartending for 3 years but “Beertending” for about 1 year. How long have you been InTheBiz? I have been InTheBiz® since I came here from MI so almost 3 years. What are your hobbies outside of work? My biggest hobby is Craft Beer, but I also enjoy relaxing on the beach and checking out new places to grub out.Why did you become a bartender? I started “beertending” because my passion for craft beer led me to it, I got the opportunity with Funky Buddha and it took off from there. What is your favorite drink? My favorite “Drink” or Beer right now on tap at Funky Buddha would have to be the Hop Gun IPA. Im just a big fan of hoppy beers in general. What skills do you possess that make you a good Bartender? I have patience, a great sense of humor, and extraordinary knowledge of craft beer. What advice would you offer to new bartenders just starting out? I’d say, do what makes you happy, desk jobs aren’t for everyone. Bartending gets you out there and meeting a lot of new people every day. Its definitely the most fun you can have at work. What is your favorite drink to make? I love pouring beers for people that bring them completely outside of their comfort zone, watching them try something new and expand their palate. My Least favorite drink to make? I would have to say the beer going to an unappreciative, impatient guest would be my least favorite beer to make. I also take part in hosting an outdoor beer event every month in the Wynwood district of Miami. We showcase a guest Florida brewer each month as well as showcase local homebrewers that bring in their own creations for everyone to sample. Aside from beer we also showcase a number of Food Vendors as well as local artists and DJ’s. August 23rd is the next Sud Swap from 2pm-6pm and we welcome everyone to come and enjoy some good beers with us!

stan smith Bartender at sopranos Dueling piano Bar

By Nicol JeNkiNs EDITOR

At Sopranos Dueling Piano Bar in Fort Lauderdale, you’ll always be entertained.

From the moment you step in the door, dueling piano performers dazzle customers with their talent. Once you make your way to the bar, you’ll be greeted by a friendly face.

Bartender Stan Smith has been per-fecting his bartending skills for 17 years in the hospitality industry. At Sopranos Dueling Piano Bar, Stan has been making his regulars smile by mixing up their favorite cocktails for almost two years.

“I enjoy working in the hospitality industry because it’s entertaining, and there is always something new going on every night,” says Stan.

“At Sopranos, there’s always enter-tainment in various forms and I always have a smile on my face. Between my customers, employees and piano play-ers, I’m always laughing and having fun,” added Stan.

Besides creating unique drinks, Stan has some ‘Tricks of the Trade’ up his sleeve.

“It’s all acting; that’s the trick! Here at Sopranos, all of us have a performance and bartending is my performance,” said Stan, adding, “Sopranos is located right on the beach and we enjoy our locals as well as tourists coming in and checking out the place. We also have a lot of regulars, bachelorette parties, birthday parties, fundraising events and corporate events that come in and enjoy

the show.”Stan says that with the vast demo-

graphics of the groups that come into Sopranos, he always has a different and unique night. “Our guests keep me laughing with performances of their own.”

Another Trick of the Trade is knowing what his customers like to drink. “For the regulars that come up to the bar, 90 percent of the time I know what they drink. It’s a mix of all different types of liquors, and most order Jager.”

Stan believes people keep coming back to the bar because of “the ambi-ence. There’s always something going on here; everyone loves the customer service, the live music and they just love to hang out here!”

It is In The Biz® night all the time at Sopranos with 50 percent off alcohol and 20 percent off on food. Plus, there’s $5 fireball shots and $6 Jager shots. And it’s always Happy Hour from 5 pm til 8 pm including $2.25 domestic beer, $3 well drinks and $5 wine.

Sopranos Dueling Piano Bar is cur-rently open Thursday through Sunday from 5 pm to 4 am. Stay tuned for a Wednesday night of fun and entertain-ment coming soon! They are located on the third floor of Beach Place at 17 S Fort Lauderdale Beach Blvd., Fort Lau-derdale, FL 33316. For more information or to make a reservation, call 954-533-7973. seaside grill offers delicious dining with a view

By Nicol JeNkiNsEditor

The freshest seafood, the best in cus-tomer service, delicious drinks and spectacular views… This all can be found

at Seaside Grill Restaurant.

Located in the historic Lighthouse Cove Resort in Pompano Beach, Seaside Grill Res-taurant delivers the finest seaside dining in the area.

Known for their seafood dishes, friendly staff and overflowing cocktails, Seaside is a favorite hangout among locals and a perfect destination spot for vacationers alike.

That was in fact the plan when owner Bret Hughes opened Seaside Grill Restaurant in the fall of 2011. His vision was to create a fun and casual dining atmosphere on the beautiful Atlantic Shores of Pompano Beach.

Hughes has continued his passion for mak-ing others happy through a unique dining experience. Seaside serves up many wonderful

and original seafood specials along with other delicious Floridian fare at moderate prices.

Seaside Grill offers the finest seaside dining in Pompano Beach. Visitors and regulars are drawn to the beautiful views, delicious seafood, original cocktail specials and live music. Whether you intend to dance the night away or simply enjoy one of the chef’s delicious specials, you will undoubtedly enjoy your experience at Seaside.

They promise to provide you with a exciting dining experience by combining fresh and flavorful “South Floridian” cui-sine featuring delicious seafood specials, ten-der steaks, frosty cocktails, and their distinctive customer service.

Their newly renovated dining room and lounge features a full bar with a bustling and generous happy hour and vibrant night life. Featuring live entertainment on the weekends and several large screen TVs featuring sporting events, there is something for everyone!

Perhaps most importantly, their full staff of bartenders and servers are among the finest in South Florida. Their employees are actually their Number 1 asset.

Because of the food and one-of-a-kind din-ing experience, Seaside Grill has also become the perfect location for your private or office parties. Ghaleb of American Idol performs Friday and Saturday nights at 8:30 pm- easily the best show in South Florida, and it’s free to drinkers and diners. He’s like Andrea Bocelli meets Gypsy Kings and sounds as good as them- that’s no exaggeration.

“Our staff is friendly because the owner and managers are friendly,” says General Manager Jim Jordan, adding, “The mesmerizing ocean

view is a visual tranquilizer to complement the effect of the Martinis and Margaritas. We are known for seafood but we will surprise you with our steak quality.”

Seaside Grill offers plenty of daily specials and Happy Hours. Be sure to check out their $5 Martini Bar offering Peach Pomegranate, Dirty Martinis, Chocolate, Orange Blossom, Blue (berry) and Classic flavors. Thursty Thursdays have $3 Martinis and Margaritas and $5 (triple the size) SeaMonster Margaritas on Thursday nights.

Their Signature dishes include Crab Stuffed Mahi, Chilean Salmon Florentine with Cilantro Lemon Sauce, “Jump-Up” Fish in a Bag (Mahi with Aioli, Portobello, and Spinach), and Bleu-Cheese Crusted New York Strip. Full bar, full selection of coffees, and desserts. Also, be sure to see their uber-cool “Blue Room” complete with Big Blue Curtains for private parties.

Fresh seafood, ocean views and frosty cock-tails…. Come and experience what everyone is talking about!

Seaside Grill is located at 1406 N Ocean Blvd, Pompano Beach, FL 33062. For more information, call (954) 783-3193.

VJ Gio

By Nicol JeNkiNsEditor

For Iovanny “VJ Gio” Lobo, making people smile through music is his passion… and he has over 20 years experience in the field.

If you’ve been out dancing in Fort Lauderdale or Miami clubs, there’s a chance you’ve heard the pulsating beats from Gio.

Known for mixing up mainstream music on the fly, Gio is an expert at all things entertainment.

His love for music started at a young age, but he didn’t know that was his calling until his cousin asked him to join her band. Prior, he was testing the waters as a mechanic but didn’t feel that same passion.

“My cousin was a singer in a freestyle band called Vou Dou Danse, and they were looking for a drummer. We played together all over Central and South Florida for 3 years. This experience is what made me feel that I was in the right busi-ness. Entertaining a crowd and watching them enjoy themselves, I knew this was my calling,” said Gio.

After that first spark in a band, Gio got his first DJ gig working in an adult entertainment club. During the mid 90’s, he was introduced to the South Florida underground music scene by going to The Edge in Fort Lauderdale. There he realized the DJs were creating the same type of energy he felt during his days in the band. He continued to DJ throughout South Florida. In 1997, he became the General Manager at The Mix Afterhours in South Beach and later also became one of the resident DJs. “One weekend the resident DJ had a booking in Europe, one of the owners asked me if I had my records, and I said yes. That night was the first night I felt the magic and energy that make DJs love what they do. After that night, the owner was pleased with my performance and offered me to be one of the resident DJs. Working there, I had the opportunity to play along with talents: Edgar

V., George Acosta, Dr. Psychosis, Tiesto, Paul Oak-enfold, Taucher, Talla 2XLC, Dimitri from Amster-dam and more. Also during that time, I got to spin at the first two Ultra Music Festivals.”

But by 2001, a lot of changes happened in our country including cracking down on the so called ‘raves’, and the after-hours club had to close. Gio continued to pursue his career in playing music for the masses. In 2008, he hit a dry spell finding gigs, so he decided to take a bartending class to continue working in the industry. He landed his first bartending job at Revolution Live. They de-cided to turn the patio area into America’s Back-yard and Gio found out that they were going to be hiring DJs for that spot. “Being a club DJ got me through the door, but I still had a lot to learn about being a DJ at America’s Backyard; it was a party bar not a club, and thanks to Tim Kay and DJ Chris Parker I was taught how to play a true “Open Format” style. I could play anything from country to dubstep. During the 2 years, we start-ed playing music videos and I saw the potential of being a video DJ. Experimenting with the VJ con-cept at Original Fat Cats, I landed my first Video

DJ gig at McSorley’s Beach Pub; and a year later I was the resident VJ at Lucky’s Tavern.” During that time, Gio started his own Video DJ company for bars called Barfly Entertainment.

Gio has expanded his company to provide sound reinforcement for DJ events including Monday nights at Original Fat Cats with Roberto Patroni, DJ R-Fresh, and the Too//Future crew. You can check out VJ Gio spinning your favorite music videos on Tuesdays at Lucky’s Tavern (Fort Lauderdale), Throwback Thursdaze at Billy’s Pub Too (North Miami), and he is the Entertainment Director at Secret’s Bar, 1750 NW 7th St. Miami 33125 (1 ½ blocks from Marlins Stadium) host-ing parties on Fridays “Strictly Drum n’ Bass” and Saturdays “Electro Lounge”, www.facebook.com/secretsbarmiami.

“It’s been 20 years and I haven’t looked back. I love working in the hospitality industry. It is the biggest passion of my life!” said Gio.

Book VJ Gio by contacting him at 305-588-8325, [email protected], www.barflybuzz.com or Facebook.com/Barflyentertainment.

Miami heat lose leBron James, But regroup Quickly

sports

BY ALLEN LEVIN sPORTs EDITOR

Expect the unexpected.

Just as quickly as LeBron James shocked the basketball world and Miami

Heat fans four years ago when he announced his decision to “take his talents to South Beach,” the world’s best basketball player shocked us again.

This time, the 4-time MVP announced he was returning to Cleveland, the place he spurned for Miami just four years ago, once again delivering very unexpected news.

Miami Heat fans, players and the organiza-tion were blindsided by the announcement, after all signs appeared to have James staying in a Heat uniform for at least a couple more seasons.

But with James leaving Miami after four consecutive NBA Finals trips and two cham-pionships, Heat GM Pat Riley had to regroup quickly.

And, not shockingly, Riley bounced back strongly.

Riley swiftly secured Chris Bosh to a maximum 5-year contract and then resigned Dwyane Wade to a two-year deal, bringing back two cornerstones of the “Big Three” era.

Then, Riley signed Luol Deng to a two-year deal to replace LeBron at small forward.

Additionally, he rounded out the roster with new role players in Danny Granger and Josh McRoberts, while also resigning some key pieces from the Heat’s championship squads in Mario Chalmers, Chris Andersen and Udoni-sHaslem.

While it wasn’t the initial plan and will obvi-ously mean the Heat aren’t as formidable due to LeBron’s absence, the Heat were able to remain competitive.

Sure, it likely means a championship is out of the question this year, but the Heat remained a

playoff team with a very strong roster.

Better yet, the Heat structured their salary cap and deals to make it so they have maxi-mum flexibility come the 2016 offseason when there are several marquee free agents on the market.

The Big Three era might be over in Miami, but there is still plenty to celebrate with the Heat fielding a competitive roster and a chance to become an elite team again in the summer of 2016.

Miami Dolphins training camp underway with Big season ahead

The Miami Dolphins just missed out on their first playoff berth since 2008 last year.

They needed one victory in their final two games to reach the playoffs in the AFC, but ultimately lost both contests and watched the postseason from home.

However, the team showed true signs of potential with a talented roster.

They had their well-documented flaws with the offensive line and lack of running game, but overall they had a strong defense and solid air attack.

Now, with the 2014 NFL season right around the corner, the Fins have a lot to prove this season at multiple positions.

First of all, third-year QB Ryan Tannehill has to prove he is franchise quarterback material. He has been inconsistent in his first two years, but has shown enough to make the organization believe there is hope for him to become the guy in Miami.

Tannehill will also need to work on his chem-istry with big free agent signing Mike Wallace, who only caught 5 touchdowns last season.

Then, there is third-year head coach Joe Phil-bin, who has gone 15-17 in his first two cam-paigns at the helm. He will have to showcase he can lead this team and maintain chemistry, while making a push for the playoffs.

Additionally, there is the completely retooled offensive line that will need to prove they can protect Tannehill from getting sacked.

There are new guys, such as RB Knowshon Moreno and rookie Ju’Wuan James, who the Dolphins picked in the first round in the draft.

While there are some question marks, this Dolphins team has strong core that should be able to compete in the AFC playoff picture.
