if your New Year’s Resolution is to try new things, then you’re in luck. The month of Jan-uary is buzzing with plenty of events giving

residents and visitors many reasons to explore all that South Florida has to offer and more.

The much anticipated Las Olas Art Fair is back! Art enthusiasts will be wowed by unique art lin-ing Las Olas Boulevard. Mark your calendars for the 27th Annual las olas Art Fair on Saturday, January 3 and Sunday January 4th from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Las Olas Boulevard in downtown Fort Lauderdale. On Las Olas Boulevard, you will find a multitude of art galleries, eclectic boutiques, and dining options that range from Cuban-American cuisine to fresh seafood caught in the Atlantic Ocean. Start the year off in style and join the show that put Howard Alan Events on the map! Now considered a South Florida tradition in its 27th year on Las Olas Boulevard, the Howard Alan Events art festival is nationally recognized as one of the top events in America. Over the years, this Las Olas Boulevard festival has become a premiere “must see event” in South Florida. People come out yearly to see more than 150 artists display their work in what looks like an art gallery along the iconic Las Olas Boulevard. Meet the creators of the art on display; commission a specific piece; ask questions about techniques; learn the sources of their inspirations; and purchase fine works of art at affordable prices. Admission is free. For more information, visit http://artfestival.com.

The most eagerly awaited stage production ever will leap onto the Au-Rene Theatre stage. Get your tickets for The lion king… performing from January 7th through February 1; showtimes vary at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts, located at 201 SW 5 Ave, Fort Lauderdale. Experience the phenomenon. Visually stunning, technically astounding and with a musical score like none other you’ve ever heard. Giraffes strut, birds swoop, gazelles leap. The entire savannah comes to life and as the music soars, Pride Rock slowly emerges from the mist. See the Tony® Award-winning Broadway sensation that Newsweek calls “a landmark event in entertainment.” The New York Times says, “There is simply nothing else like it.” Marvel at the breathtaking spectacle of

animals brought to life by a cast of more than 40 actors. Wonder at the inspiration of award-winning director Julie Taymor, who created visual images for this show that you’ll remember forever. Thrill to the pulsating rhythms of the African Pridelands and an unforgettable score including Elton John and Tim Rice’s Oscar®-winning song “Can You Feel The Love Tonight” and “Circle of Life.” For more information, visit http://www.browardcenter.org.

Those who work in the hospitality industry will know this phrase, ‘Fully Committed’. “Fully Committed” (that’s restaurant-speak for “no tables available” unless you’re a supermodel, socialite or other VIP) is a one-man show star-ring John Manzelli who gives a tour-de-force performance as the high-strung maître d’ plus 39 other characters! “Fully Committed” will be in production January 8th through February 1st; showtimes vary at Abdo New River Room at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts, located at 201 SW 5 Ave, Fort Lauderdale. In this deli-cious comedy, desperate diners resort to threats, bribes, name-dropping, name-calling and down-right begging for that all-important reservation at a posh new restaurant in Manhattan. Arrive

one hour before the performance and enjoy drinks and a modern menu of tapas-style plates with table service. Bring your date, cowork-ers and friends for an evening of food, fun and theater! For further details, visit http://www.browardcenter.org.

Seafood lovers will be in for a tasty treat! Locals and visitors are welcome to come out rain or shine and enjoy a day of great food, drinks, live music, games (including the crowd-favorite hermit crab races), prizes and much more! Besides outdoor festivals and activities, if you’re looking to relax and unwind, there’s no better place than your local movie theater. The month of January will deliver many blockbuster hits. In ‘Night at the Museum: secret of the Tomb’, get ready for the wildest and most adventure-filled Night At the Museum ever as Larry (Ben Stiller) spans the globe, uniting favorite and new characters while embarking on an epic quest to save the magic before it is gone forever. The film, “into the Woods”, is a modern twist on several of the beloved Brothers Grimm fairy tales, intertwining the plots of a few choice stories and exploring the consequences of the characters’ wishes and quests. This humorous and heartfelt musical follows the classic tales of Cinderella (Anna Kendrick), Little Red Riding Hood (Lilla Crawford), Jack and the Beanstalk (Daniel Huttlestone), and Rapunzel (MacKenzie Mauzy)—all tied together by an original story involving a baker and his wife (James Corden & Emily Blunt), their wish to begin a family and their interaction with the witch (Meryl Streep) who has put a curse on them. Academy Award® winner Angelina Jolie directs and produces ‘Unbroken’, an epic drama that follows the incredible life of Olympian and war hero Louis “Louie” Zamperini (Jack O’Connell) who, along with two other crewmen, survived in a raft for

47 days after a near-fatal plane crash in WWII—only to be caught by the Japanese Navy and sent to a prisoner-of-war camp. In the action-comedy, ‘The interview’, Dave Skylark (James Franco) and his producer Aaron Rapoport (Seth Rogen) run the popular celebrity tabloid TV show “Skylark Tonight.” When they discover that North Korean dictator Kim Jong-un is a fan of the show, they land an interview with him in an attempt to legitimize themselves as journalists. As Dave and Aaron prepare to travel to Pyongyang, their plans change when the CIA recruits them, perhaps the two least-qualified men imaginable, to assassinate Kim Jong-un. In ‘American sniper’, U.S. Navy SEAL Chris Kyle (Bradley Cooper) takes his sole mission -- pro-tect his comrades -- to heart and becomes one of the most lethal snipers in American history. His pinpoint accuracy not only saves countless lives but also makes him a prime target of insur-gents. Despite grave danger and his struggle to be a good husband and father to his family back in the States, Kyle serves four tours of duty in Iraq. However, when he finally returns home, he finds that he cannot leave the war behind.

In The Biz@ Magazine wishes you a Happy New Year in 2015.

‘Kelly Brothers irish Pub’ serves up authentic irish atmosphere and a new private lounge with game roomBY NICOL JENKINSEditor

A warm Irish welcome awaits you as you step through the doors of Kelly Brothers Irish Pub in Fort Lauderdale.

Upon entrance, you feel like you have arrived in Dublin, Ireland as the quaint downstairs pub feels homey with a friendly staff and authentic Irish decor with unique nautical pieces and antique canoes hanging from the ceiling.

On any given day or night, guests will be greeted by the owner himself, Peter Kelly, his brother and manager Paul Kelly and one of their welcoming bartenders. As they entertain you in conversation while you’re enjoying a hearty Shepherd’s pie, you feel right at home.

Once you walk upstairs to their ‘Green Room’, you are pleasantly surprised by their new private lounge complete with your own bar and game room, filled with fun bar games, pool tables, darts, beer pong and a brand new top of the line jukebox. This is the perfect room for private parties of all kinds and unlike any other hangout spot in the area.

Kelly Brothers Irish Pub actually received a complete makeover in 2013 when owner Peter Kelly took over the longtime pub--- which had been open since 1960. The owner put in thousands of dollars to fully update the bar, kitchen, second story and made it a non-smoking bar. Plus, he’s added the latest games and equipment to the new private lounge--- which offers 1300 square feet of games including ping pong tables, dart leagues, pool, dancing and much more.

Both brothers Peter and Paul Kelly are true Irish citizens and come from a background in the hospi-tality industry. Peter owned a successful Irish pub in New York and has been searching for the perfect location and opportunity to open one here in South Florida.

“I just love all the locals and tourists alike, and wanted to open a cool fun place for friends, new and old, to come and hang out at a nice neighbor-hood pub,” said Peter.

And that’s exactly what Kelly Irish Brothers Pub is--- an authentic Irish pub where everyone can hang out and feel right at home.

“People come here and feel relaxed. All the bartenders are really friendly, and we are very unique in what we offer to our customers having the downstairs Irish pub and upstairs lounge; you can’t find a place like this in the area,” said Peter.

If you are a fan of traditional Irish food, you are in for a treat. Kelly Brothers has a full menu for lunch, dinner, appetizers and late night. From their speciali-ties of Shepherd’s pie, fish and chips to chicken pot pie and bar favorites of wings, burgers and salads, there is something to satisfy anyone’s taste buds.

Specials on drinks, food and events can be found on every night. In The Biz@ night is every Sunday and Monday from 11 pm to close with 50 percent off drinks, and every other night it’s 20 percent off food and drinks. Wednesday nights is our Fantastic Karaoke starting at 8 pm. Thursday nights is Open Mic night where you can hear from local talents of poetry, comedy, singing and more. They also host many local bands that play on a monthly basis and bands that perform at the Culture Room enjoy the laid back vibe and tasty meals at Kelly Brothers. Many of the performers at the Culture Room stop in, before or after their show, at the downstairs and upstairs lounge as well.

“We have a mixed crowd of customers from all ages and all walks of life. We have people come in

with flip flops to suits and ties and everything in between,” said Peter, “Everyone is welcome at Kelly Brothers Irish Pub. We are the Irish pub to go to!”

All of our customers agree and rave about the warm environment at Kelly Brothers.

“Peter is a friendly owner and he is very fortu-nate to have awesome employees working for him. The atmosphere is great and the food and drink prices are very reasonable. It’s just a fun place to be, and I recommend the Irish sliders,” said customer Walt Demartini.

Brad Evans, all away from New Zealand, is an-other great customer when he’s in town. He enjoys the owner’s hands-on approach to business and the bar’s welcoming atmosphere. “The owner’s Irish ancestry comes through and I always feel welcome when I come to the bar right when I walk in the door!”

Come enjoy some Irish hospitality, awesome ice cold beer, Irish dishes, and book your next party or event in the upstairs lounge!

kelly Brothers irish Pub is located at 3045 N Fed-eral Highway Fort lauderdale Fl 33306 (on the sW corner of oakland Park Blvd. and Federal Highway, in the plaza next to our great friends, the culture Room). For more information or to book their new lounge for parties and special events, call 954-630-2856. you can also visit kelly Brothers on Facebook at http://facebook.com/kelly.brothersirish or email [email protected].

Miami heat struggling in Post-leBron Era

The 2014-2015 Miami Heat season started off with a bang.

A 3-0 beginning, fluid passing, strong team offense and confidence that life could be okay without the game’s best player.

Then, reality set in.

Since that 3-0 start, the Heat are 12-20 and their season is in disarray.

A combination of injuries, lack of depth, inconsistent play on both sides of the ball and horrendous 3rd quarter play have sent the Heat’s season into a tailspin.

Miami sits at 15-20 and in the 8th and final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference as of the writing of this article.

While no one was expecting the Heat to be title contenders anymore, there certainly wasn’t anyone that could have anticipated this type of uneven play.

A team that features Dwyane Wade, Chris Bosh and Luol Deng was supposed to be con-tending for a top 4 spot in the East, not barely clinging onto their playoff lives in a weak Eastern Conference.

However, this is the Heat’s current situa-tion. They have been bitten by the injury bug, having lost offseason addition Josh McRoberts for the remainder of the season. In addition, Wade and Bosh have both missed extensive time and most of the role players have missed games here and there with various injuries.

On top of that, Miami is struggling to find its identity in the post-LeBron era, jugglingwith their former style of play and attempting to

find the right style for all of their new players.

With just 6 holdovers from last year’s ros-ter, the Heat are trying to incorporate a lot of new faces, while maintaining some semblance of what made them so successful in the previ-ous 4 seasons.

The result hasn’t been pretty, but head coach Erik Spoelstra continues to say that the team is making progress.

While the Heat won’t be competing for a championship this year, there is still hope that they can right the ship and make some noise in the playoffs.

January 20158 • ITB • 29 www.InTheBizMagazine.com

This was supposed to be a big year for college football in the Sunshine State.

Florida State was the defending national champions, the Gators had a top re-cruiting class that was expected to bring them back to relevance, and the University of Miami was expected to compete in the ACC.

However, not too many positives came from the “Big Three” programs in Florida.

Of course, the Seminoles repeated as ACC Championships and made a berth in the inaugural college football playoffs as the No. 3 ranked team in the country, but a 59-20 loss to Oregon ended their season in woeful fashion.

The University of Florida ended their season on a positive note, with a Birmingham Bowl victory over ECU, but still finished the year a pedestrian 7-5.

The Hurricanes finished the worst of the

bunch with a 6-7 record and a bowl game loss to South Carolina, making it their 5th straight postseason loss.

On top of that, the University of Central Florida, who had a strong 9-4 season, lost their bowl game as well, giving the Florida Division 1 programs a 1-3 record in bowls this season.

It wasn’t a pretty season for the state of Florida, but the good news is that recruit-ing continues to be extremely strong for the storied programs.

FSU should be back in title contention next season, UF has a new coach and a new vision, UCF has a strong roster to make another bowl game and Miami is in an unknown state cur-rently.

Either way, Florida will always make noise due to the recruiting prowess of the state.

Mai-Kai celebrates 58 years of Polynesian food, entertainment and family

www.InTheBizMagazine.com January 2015 • ITB • 35

By Nicol JeNkiNsEditor

Angel Vega remembers the earlier days when the landmark restaurant was filled with half the amount of diners yet still

offering the same tropical atmosphere and friendly service.

That was December 28, 1956. Fifty-eight years later, Mai-Kai restaurant has doubled in size pro-viding more entertainment during the Polyne-sian show, a more extensive menu and a tropical outdoor oasis yet still maintaining a charm that exceeds expectations with a welcoming staff.

The moment you step into Mai-Kai, you feel like you are in Hawaii. Smiling faces from employees and the Molokai cocktail waitresses greet guests at the Molokai bar. After a stroll through the outdoor tropical gardens and wa-terfalls, guests are seated and taste one of many tropical concoctions and their pick of one of the Polynesian style specialties, including the fa-mous PuPu platter, steaks marinated and cooked in the Chinese wood burning oven, chicken and seafood infused exquisite dishes. While dining, customers are treated to a show with Polynesian style dances, music, fire knife dancers and much more.

Regular customers were treated to a special 58th Anniversary event on December 28th. Guests received food and drink specials, and

musical entertainment by Aloha Boyz at the Molokai Bar. During the event, customers and employees fondly recalled the many years of business and dining at the unique restaurant.

“I used to come here every week and bring the restaurant many new customers and then they offered me a job in 1990. I’ve been here 24 years and I love it. It’s been a family since day one. Everyone loves Mai-Kai,” said Pia Dahlquist, Director of Sales and Marketing for Mai-Kai restaurant.

Kern Mattei, Manager of Mai-Kai Restaurant, attributes the success of the restaurant to the “uniqueness of the atmosphere, tropical hand crafted cocktails, the food is top notch and the welcoming employees”.

“So many of our customers come in looking for one of our employees. Having the right peo-ple who serve them makes all the difference. We are also popular for our tropical drinks that are hand crafted and have been favorites for over 50 years. The food and the Polynesian review show is also top notch,” said Mattei.

Mai-Kai has kept its same tradition of bringing the islands of Hawaii to South Florida. It was in fact two brothers who fell in love with the archi-tecture in Hawaii and opened the restaurant in Fort Lauderdale. The Mai-Kai was created by Bob and Jack Thornton. The brothers visited Don the Beachcomber’s in Chicago, as children, and even at that young age said they wanted to open a

similar place.

“They had the right idea and built a beautiful and different restaurant in Fort Lauderdale. The secret to being open so many years is having a beautiful place, exciting entertainment, excellent food, excellent service and having a place where people love to come and enjoy themselves,” said Angel.

Angel looks forward to many more years greeting customers at Mai-Kai.

“Mai-Kai customers are to me the most beau-tiful people I’ve ever met; there are so many regulars who keep coming back. It’s an honor to work in a place like this with so many regulars asking for you and that’s what it’s all about; we want to take care of our customers,” said Angel. “When people say goodnight to us, they say they have had the best time and have been to Hawaii and this is even better than the islands and that to me is a nice compliment. Why go anywhere else when you have it here? To me, working 51 years here is like my home. I love Mai-Kai, I love the customers and what I do, and I think I’m just getting warmed up.”

Come visit the friendly staff, enjoy a tropical drink, exquisite food and a talented Polynesian show at Mai-Kai Restaurant.

Mai-kai Restaurant is located at 3599 North Federal Highway, Fort lauderdale, Fl 33308. For more information or to book a reservation, call (954) 563-3272.
