Today we will learn about new changes in the English government. Changes that are still in practice today.

• Unpopular, cruel

• Lost many wars (land in France)

• People tired of failures and increased taxes

• Excommunicated (expelled from the church) by the Pope

• King felt he could do what he pleased

• Nobles wanted the King to recognize their rights

• Wanted to limit King’s power

• 1215, forced King to sign the Magna Carta

• Magna Carta, which in Latin means the great charter

• Began when the king of France died without an heir (someone to take his place)

• The King of England Vs. Powerful French lord argued who would be King of France

• The French lord became king so the English king invaded France

of the battles

• A French teenager, Joan of Arc helped lead the French troops into victory

• The English captured her and killed her, but the French still won in 1453

–The English kings lost power trying to negotiate (bargain) money for war

• The French king’s power grew

– King bonded with the nobles during the war and they continued to support him
