intrapreneurship network company challenge 2012 - 2013
DESCRIPTION
In 2010 The Team Academy -supported by the society of organisational learning- launched an international platform to help existing organisations to become more entrepreneurial. We called it the Intraprneneurship network. With intrapreneurshio we mean proactive creative behaviour initiated by individual employees leading to new business and/or additional revenue. Our methods are based on the Team Academy methods: action & team learning.TRANSCRIPT
This document contains a proposal for an inter-company program to (further) develop the
intrapreneurial knowledge, skills and attitude within established organisations.
Why participants in our intrapreneurship workshops find it valuable:- “With the re-organisation creativity has left the company.”- “There are a lot op promising ideas within our department, but nobody seems to listen?!”- “Our company script prescribes a weekly sales meeting with a fixed agenda without any contribution to sales.”
Intrapreneurship Network
"Tell us and we will forget, show us and we may remember, involve us and we understand together" - variation on quote by Confucius -
Innovation distinguishes leaders ....*
Change is speeding up. Familiar revenue models become outdated. The tension between freedom and control in the organisation is, in this harsh economy, mostly won by the latter. Organisations fall back on lean and mean scenario’s. Result: less room for innovation.
We need organisations to make a step forward. That recognize the need for innovation. That engage the workforce in their vision. That create a context in which creativity and entrepreneurship can flourish. Leading to new value creation and a sustainable future.
*...and followers. Quote Steve Jobs
Leading QuestionHow do we unleash entrepreneurial ideas and create an intrapreneurial attitude within our increasingly efficiency focused organisations to speed up new business development to realise sustainable value creation?
... and leads to sustainable value creation.
PropositionA team of 2 to 4 people participate in a one year program to launch or accelerate an entrepreneurial company challenge that serves as an innovative example and inspirational learning for the organisation as a whole.
"An organization's ability to learn, and translate that learning into action rapidly, is the ultimate competitive advantage." - Jack Welch, Chairman, GE
Started by entrepreneurs in education ...
The Intrapreneurship Network is an initiative from Arjen Hemelaar and Patrick Bijman. Both are connected to Team Academie Nederland. A school for entrepreneurship which was founded in 1993 in Finland. In 2012 the school is present in 17 locations in Europe and Brazil and works with a revolutionary concept based on action learning, team-dynamics and personal leadership. We develop powerful young professionals who, while making conscious choices, can create value in teams.
Last year Arjen & Patrick organised 4 workshops on intrapreneurship in Paris (together with Team Academy France), Bilbao (together with Team Academy Spain), Overveen (Landgoed Duinlust) and Noordwijk (de Baak). Presently, they are work in a book on this subject.
The Intrapreneurship Network is hosted by Duinlust Estate. This estate in Overveen/Haarlem is a Laboratory for Future Practices. Duinlust is home base for consultants, coaches and trainers that seek to innovate the way we work and live.
... to improve learning and results.
The goals of the Intrapreneurship Network program are practical and concrete. At the end of the year we’ll achieve financial and learning results on three levels: individual, team and organisation.
As an individual you are asked to make reflections on your input, personal growth and contribution. As a team you are responsible for the financial and learning results of the Company Challenge. And as an organisation you are expected to (further) develop your vision on the “intrapreneurial organisation” in a way you can create value together.
"Only 6% of employees find their company innovative, while 80% of employees find themselves innovative." - Miguel Meuleman, Assistant Professor Entrepreneurship, Vlerick School of Management
Think different, act different & be different
“How can we combine ideas from all these different minds to create something that none of them could have created individually?
The first step actually is always CHAOS: we are the no-professors. You are the no-students. We want project teams with real customers.”
Anita Seidler,Social entrepreneur, HUB Madrid co-founder & Organisation Specialist at McKinsey & Company Brazil, Intrapreneurship Team Coach in Spain
Intrapreneurship, our definition
Intrapreneurship refers to initiatives by employees in established organizations to undertake new business activities. It distinguishes itself from corporate entrepreneurship, which is generally defined as a top-down process, by its focus on bottom-up, proactive work related initiatives of individual employees at any hierarchical level of the organization.

The objectives of the programme
When you ask people about what it is like being part of a great team, what is most striking is the meaningfulness of the experience. People talk about being part of something larger than themselves, of being connected, of being generative. (Senge 1990: 13)

We work with ...
The program consists of Action Learning days, Deepening Insight days and a Learning Journey. During Action Learning Days we work on personal mastery, discuss the company challenges and see what this means for organisational learning (Entrepreneurship, Leadership & Innovation). We broaden our horizon and focus on Co-creation by traveling to Spain (Learning Journey). And we participate in short but intense Deepening Insight days focused on creating the intrapreneurial organisation.
The Action learning days (3 * 2,5 days) start at Wednesday evening (19 H) and last until Friday after lunch (14 H). During these days you work on (a) Personal Mastery, (b) the Company Challenge and (c) Organisational Learning. We learn with and from each other. With inspiring tools and methods and the help of professional trainers and specialists.
In addition we organise a Learning Journey (1 * 4 days) to Spain. We create new insights by experiencing large changes in context. W visit companies of the Mondragon Cooperative with innovative examples of corporate entrepreneurship.
During deepening insight days (3 * 0,5 day) we take a closer look at the characteristics of the “intrapreneurial organisation”. We work on creating your approach for your organisation.

Methodolody is based on the latest insights
Main source of the methodology is the Team Academy International school for entrepreneurship, which is based on “the education of the future” by the EU-Commission Delors: http://www.unesco.org/delors/fourpil.htm
Learning to Know: This type of learning is concerned less with the acquisition of structured knowledge than with the mastery of learning tools. It may be regarded as both a means and an end of human existence.
Learning to Do: This question is closely associated with the issue of occupational training: how do we adapt education so that it can equip people to do the types of work needed in the future?
Learning to Work together: When people work together on exciting projects which involve them in unaccustomed forms of action, differences and even conflicts between individuals tend to pale and sometimes disappear.
Learning to Be: Education should contribute to every person's complete development - mind and body, intelligence, sensitivity, aesthetic appreciation and spirituality.

Co-creation: according to Ken Wilber, an American writer and philosopher, this is growth segment number one for the coming decades. But also one of the most difficult one’s to reach.
With co-creation you have to cross several ‘boarders’ of which cultural differences are probably the most difficult to bridge. What does it take to create a real co-creation project? How to operate?
In Spain we visit the Mondragon Cooperation and some of its member organisations. Mondragon is one of the largest cooperations in the world (254 companies in 17 countries / 84.000 employees). Mondragon has a unique vision on (team)cooperation and co-creation. With remarkable results (see coverage Tegenlicht: http://www.uitzendinggemist.nl/share_episodes/new?episode_id=1242863)
We get our inspiration by Jose Mari Luzarraga who facilitates our learning sessions at the Mondragon University.

The program consists of Action Learning days, Deepening Insight days and a Learning Journey. Life is a life-long-learning journey. Sometimes if we need to learn more, or want to be re-inspired we organise a new learning journey. This can take place in different forms (Inwards, outwards?). But always with unexpected results.

“Innovation = idea + leader + team + plan + implementation” This equation (inspired by The Other Side of Innovation by Vijay Govindarajan & Chris Trimble) shows how you can get from idea to realization. A management solution for the struggle between chaos and control. It is very interesting to share experiences between each other on this process.

“The Why, How and What of the Intrapreneurial organisation”Everything starts with the Why. What is the reason behind developing intrapreneurship within the organisation? Why do we want to create an intrapreneurial spirit? What’s in it for the individual, for the teams and for the organisation?
Dialogue House ABN -Amro Amsterdam
The program consists of Action Learning days, Deepening Insight days and a Learning Journey. The Deepening Insight days are short sessions focused at one specific item. Overall goal of the Deepening Insight days is to gain insight into “the intrapreneurial organisation”. Subjects may change over time, depending on the actuality and need of the participants. The Deepening Insight days are Open Door meetings (also accessible for interested people outside the programme)

Name About
Olivier Basso
I have found that the most difficult entrepreneurial projects are those that have to be launched in an already existing organization. They are always perceived as sources of confusion and chaos by the corporate immune system which can’t really understand the creative process of a venture creation…Hence, I have been acting for 15 years as an expert in accompanying corporate entrepreneurs and their internal ventures along their way, through consulting, teaching, researching and coaching.

"Innovation is not about stimulating creativity, it's about taking away (mental) roadblocks created in our corporations and their belief systems", says Herman Prakke. After 20 years in industry, building businesses in Europe, China, India and Brazil, he now supports companies in complex transformations. He is Managing Partner of OneConsultancyGroup and is Executive Fellow at Rotterdam School of Management / Erasmus University.

The Intrapreneurship Network is open to profit and not for profit organisations. Diversity works.
Organisations can choose to participate between the full- and the light program. The difference in cost (12.000 euro) is explained by (a) less participants, (b) no Company Challenge to be reviewed and (c) no on site support/coaching.
Participating in the programme takes 9 working days and additional preparation/reading and reflection time.
Individuals can choose to follow the 1,5-year part-time Master Intrapreneurship & Open Innovation. If you wish to do this you can “earn” 10% of the credits (6 EC’s) during the Intrapreneurship Network program. Please let us know, so we can make sure you get the individual support/registration of results.

Harvard Business School reinvents its MBA course
YOUNG mums shopping in the Copley Mall in downtown Boston last month found themselves being questioned about their use of soap by students from Harvard Business School. The students were not doing odd jobs to earn beer money. They were preparing to help a firm in Brazil launch an antibacterial cleanser.Fieldwork—ie, going out and talking to people—is a big change for HBS. Its students used to sit in a classroom and discuss case studies written by professors. Now they may also work in a developing country and launch a start-up. “Learning by doing” will become the norm, if a radical overhaul of the MBA curriculum succeeds.
The 900 students arriving in Boston this summer for their two-year course were told they would be guinea pigs. The new practical addition to HBS’s curriculum is known as “FIELD” (Field Immersion Experiences for Leadership Development). Not all the staff and students are overjoyed to be experimented on. But the man responsible, Nitin Nohria, who became dean of HBS in July 2010, says that “if it works, the FIELD method could become an equal partner to the case method.”......

Making innovation happen
Innovation is nonroutine and uncertain. Therefore -more than anything else- to make innovation happen, we look for internal leaders who are opportunity driven. However ideas are only the beginning. Each innovation initiative requires a team with a custom organizational model and a plan that is revised only through a rigorous learning process.
Innovation = idea + leader + team + plan

A thorough intake is key “It takes a village to raise a child.”
The quality of the program depends heavily on the commitment and motivation of the participating teams. The intake is about checking expectations with regard to the company challenge, the team composition, management support and resources. We like you to answer the following questions:
Changing team members during the program is not recommended but sometimes necessary. If this is an issue please let’s talk about it and look for solutions. We like you to answer these questions before deciding to participate
1.Did you chose a real Company Challenge. Examples are:
- setting up a new venture and/or business unit- developing/experimenting with a new revenue model- realizing a (breakthrough) innovation- introduction of “new ways of working”
2. Is your Team divers and coherent:
- Line & Staff - Senior & Junior (at least one senior manager)- connected to the same Company Challenge- change makers
3. Does the team have sufficient Support:
- is their enough backup / is management committed to the Challenge?- are their enough recourses (money/time) to make the Company Challenge to a success?
