MAIHAR CEMENT BHDANPUR LIMESTONE MINES INTRODUCTION- Maihar Cement, is an IS/ISO 9001:2000 and IS/ISO 14001 certified industrial establishment. It has three contiguous Mining Leases 296.956 hect. 217.681 hect. and 663.00 hect. in the villages Bhadanpur North Patti, Bhadanpur South Patti, Moharwa, Umrour, Piprahat and Srinagar, Tehsil – Maihar, Distt.- Satna (M.P.). AWARDS- It is with great satisfaction, we have to mention here that our efforts towards better environment have been acclaimed at Regional and National level and for that was selected for “ABHERAJ BALDOTA ENVIRONMENT AWARD ” for outstanding consumption to the Nations goal of sustainable development through environmental conservation and rational utilization of Natural Resources. Similarly FIMI AWARD for the “OUTSTANDING CONTRIBUTION TO COMMUNITY WELFARE” has also been awarded to us. GEOLOGY OF BHADANPUR MINES- The deposit of Maihar Cement Limestone Mines, Bhadanpur is belonging to Rohtas formation of Semri series of Vindhyan Super group. This formation is made up of main lithic units of Limestone and Shale, which are lying as laminated Sedimentary deposit. WASTE DUMP MANAGEMENTS - Total 14.89 hect.. area is covered by 14 number of waste dumps. Out of this 7 number of waste dumps over 11.06 hect. area have been stabilized by providing retaining wall, bunds and by proper terracing of bench. Total 23800 number of trees has been planted, proper terracing and retaining wall all around its periphery to prevent erosion of dumps. The top as well as the slope is stabilized with grass/plants on massive scale. Total 05 number of waste dump are proposed for rehandling. In previous year three dumps are re-handle & backfill and 1.80 hect surface area has been cleared . TOP SOIL MANAGEMENTS- In ML and surrounding areas have thin soil cover (0.6 to 1.0 mtrs.). Mostly it is composed of unfertile murrum and lateritic soil. This top soil is separately handled and stacked. It is immensely valuable for our plantation and special care is taken that it is 100% conserved for useful purposes in forestation. During 2012-2013 topsoil has not been generated but preserved 1708 m3 top soil has been utilized at backfilled site for plantation purposes.

RECLAMINATION Reclamation is under progress in various leases of Bhadanpur Mines, total of 20.82 hect. area has been reclaimed and entire 20.82 hect. area has been rehabilitated by planting trees of difference species. Therefore 99.5% of the area has been rehabilitated so far. AFFORESTATION: A total of 80140 numbers trees up to 30.11.2013 have been planted in the mining area and 118960 numbers tree has been planted out side of mining area. Thus total 199000 numbers trees has been planted in and around mines with 99.9% survival rates with 99.9% survival rates. The trees have been provided with irrigation facilities, fertilizers, pesticides etc. MANAGEMENT OF SUB-GRADE MINERAL: During 2013-14 quantity of sub grade utilisation was 130000 tonnes. We are thus using 100% sub grade mineral. Sub grade stacked is mostly used in rainy season to maintain a flow of raw material passes through crusher and belt conveyor to our cement plant. The high grade Limestone raised from the mines is utilized for blending with sub grade mineral during monsoon. AIR QUALITY MANAGEMENTS- High Volume Air Sampler are used for study of air quality and the results so obtained indicate that the concentration of all pollutants are much below the normal limits prescribed by Central Pollution Control Board. These results have been achieved by the controlled measures already taken like dust suppression on haul road by water tanker, water injection system for blast hole drilling, automatic water sprinkler system at crusher hopper & discharge point , dust collectors at changeover point of belt conveyor etc. WATER QUALITY MANAGEMENTS: - In order to assess the quality of water four stations are fixed for drawing sampling. These locations were finalized in consultation with the Deptt. of Forest & Environment.. The quality of water has been monitored for all the seasons and submitting the analysis report for all the 31 radicals as per standard provided by IS-2490. NOISE SURVEY: - The noise level monitoring carried out in our mine has revealed that the ambient noise levels in all the cases are well within the limit. Noise level survey is being monitored quarterly to improve the conditions further wherever possible. Frequency of noise survey is four times in a year by our own noise level instrument. Proper maintenance of all the noise generating parts of the machine is introduced and this helps to keep the noise level within the permissible limit. In addition to this ear Muffs & plugs are also issued to work persons.

VIBRATION SURVEY: - M/s. CMFRI, Nagpur have carried out ground vibration study and established the blasting parameters for various working pits. We follow their guide lines in terms of adopting proper blast hole geometry, charging pattern, use of adequate delay and restricting the charge per delay. This has resulted safe blasting practices in our mines. AESTHETIC BEAUTY: - Maihar Cement is also conscious towards the Aesthetic Beauty of the mines and surrounding area. The steps taken in mines to create healthy atmosphere in and around the working area. Aesthetic beauty is given due importance at every part of the mine. Colony roads well-laid road, lush Green Township with club and swimming Pool facilities..

ENVIRONMENTAL PROBLEM ASSOCIATED WITH

MINING AND STRATEGY FOR ENVIRONMENTAL

MANAGEMENT

V.K. JAIN

SR. MANAGER (MECH)

DMP MAJHGAWAN

1. Introduction Today the industrial development has become a must for the all round

developments of a region. Minerals play an important role in economic

development of our country. Development is a prime necessity but development at

the cost of environment creates more problems than it solves. The environmental

changes start right from preliminary exploration, detailed exploration and

exploitation. Mining industry is the back bone of nation’s development. Mining

activities for extraction of rocks and minerals from the ground rises environmental

impact in mining areas and its surrounding areas by disturbing the forest ecology,

hydrology, geology, health, air and noise problems etc. and call for

implementation of Environmental management plans.

2. Impact on environment due to open cast mining.

* Deforestation which drastically change the climatic conditions.

* Geographical changes which include change in topography of the area, slope

Pattern etc.

* Overburden and dumping of mine waste over large areas making them unsafe.

* Diversion of nallah rivers hence change in drainage pattern.

* Toxic pollution dissolves in water causes water pollution.

* Discharge of acid mine water in the stream.

* Degradation of agricultural land on a large scale as well as loss in fertility by

siltation.

* Spontaneous combination in case of coal.

* Change in rainfall, atmosphereic humidity, and diurnal temp.

*Effect on our quality that includes dust, gases & smoke.

*Noise and vibration due to blasting and operation of heavy machineries.

*Allied industrialization and urbanization.

3. Environmental Management (Remedial Action)

*Preparation of base map to demarcate areas affected by mining activities.

*Demarcation of drainage basins and study the basin characteristics with help of

drainage.

*Detailed Geomorphologic studies.

Page 60: INTRDUCTORY & MESSAGES - memcwcounciljabalpur.orgmemcwcounciljabalpur.org/JAL-MEMC-13/Souvenir.pdf · A.K.Singh Sr.Manager Mines Maihar Ceme nts V.K.Sharma Mines Manager Jaypee,

* Preparation of slope stability map.

* Preparation of inland water pollution maps

* Study of soil, water, air, noise etc and collection of samples periodically.

* Study the socio economic conditions periodically.

* Study of pollution with help of aerial photograph and images.

* Preparation of EMP (Envt. Mgmt plan)

*Extensive plantation all over the project area including the waste dump.

* Construction of tailing dams.

* Treating of waste water before discharge.

* Periodically checking of health of mine workers.

* Dust suppression by water sprinklers & use of dust filter.

4. Conclusion

In a development country like India, Minerals are very important natural

resources with an immersive value to the society and its economy. To harness these

resources mining is must. Our aim should be development without destruction. The

mining industries are to be planned to be productive, cost effective and

environmentally compatible. Thus, there should be a complete harmony between

mining and environment to balance the nature.

Ah! Quiet Dell! Dear Cot, Mount sublime! I was constrained to quit you. Was it right,

while my unnumber’d brethren toil’d and bled, that I should dream away the entrusted

hours on rose–leaf beds, pampering the coward heart with feeling all too delicate for

use ? Sweet is the tear that from some Howard’s eye drops on the cheek of one he lifts

from earth: and he that works me good with unmov’d face Does it but half : he chills me

while he aids, my benefactor , not my brother man! Yet even this, this cold beneficence

praise, praise it, O my soul! Oft as thou scann’st the sluggard pity’s vision–weaving tribe!

who sigh for wretchedness, yet shun the wretched, nursing in some delicious solitude

their slothful loves and dainty sympathies! I therefore go, and join head, heart and hand,

active and firm to fight the bloodless fight of science, freedom, and the truth in Christ.

Minerals and mines are very useful to us. Metals which are symbol of

modern age are a product of these mines. So we should make healthy environment for our

mines and keep safe our nature.

In Madhya Pradesh many of mines situated, in which different kind of

minerals like coal, diamonds, gypsum, aluminum, calcium, copper etc. are being

explored. We know we are living in the age of science. Today means of transportation

like train, aero plane, buses all are depend on metals. Without mining we can not get

metals. But if we want to save mankind for long and long times then it is important to

save and conserve the minerals and metals. Minerals are products which are obtained by

mining are not enough in world. Its have only limited sources. But requirement are

enough. So our first duty to make balance ratio between production and consumption of

minerals

Mining is a unnatural process. Because after mining the natural structure of

our earth, mountains are deformed. But we can fulfill all the drawbacks from our creative

action. At last it is true the metals and minerals a means for creation. We should try to

overcome wastage of mineral. Conservation of minerals is requirement of future. If we

want save future then Conservation of minerals is only objective.

WAY FOR CONSERVATION OF MINERALS

1-RECYCLE TO METALS

2 - STOP WASTAGE OF METALS/MINERALS.

3- REDUCE THE USE OF METAL FOR UNWANTED REASON.

MINING ENVIRONMENT & ITS CONSERVATION

SUNIL KUMAR SHARMA

M.D.C.V. E -1072

Since industrialization the human being has last its coal-compete compassion &

destroying are natural resources such as coal , energy , fuel based fossils , iron , gold

,diamond and platinum etc. eventually nature is bleeding & human destiny is in

desperate & in bleak condition . this happened due to the failure of institutional valve and

operation of bad governance the problems being compounded by colonial history which

involves saligian (Christianity or others , religion ) , civilization and comers .the people

use the moth & fan tansy, paradoxical view , superficiality preceptors, contractors,

smugglers & bad licensing – Raj . these forces led to the environmental brewing .

What happened in side the mining operation – the people used highly toxic

chemicals, biological elements, & moderns in strumpets to a high clarets of level making

air, water, plants, planets & wild animal badly affected. here , they are using mercury,

sulphus zinc & others , chemical & destroying the palmist & environmental pattern

These forces leave to asthma ,cancer ,cholera ,size of temp; and others human diseases

etc.this is happing live to the emission of toxic gases one method is to limit the green

house gas emission is that by using geological cambering engineering method we could

capture and store toxic gases suck as co2 getting it liquefied & pumped deep

underground . precisely co2 at the very onset of pollution must be snuffed safely

underground before it con belch

Into atmosphere. Moreover , the research is moving on to measure the

geological feasibility of long term commercial scale storage of co2 & surveyors ,

scientist are also studying the nature and character of sedimentary rocks & drilling

hosizons , here, could use corn as a feedstock for experimental carbon capture , hence

co2 from bonfire .

Refinery has been used with the in no votive liquefied, later on, we could store a chunk

of co2 at this in nature , storage of co2 is to be analyzed with the wealthier re action to the

historical origin, behavior , condition , pattern & character of environmental set up.

.because , carbon storage may pose a greater seismic threat than oil & gas extraction do

quakes that are cap rock seal of co2 repositories enough to release the gas back into at

musher , if the release were sudden it night kill people.

During freefalling & blasting the volume of pollutants goes up to such high

level & environment is evenly affected we are not in a position to get them regulated in

truer spirits, in the modern age , by installing modern technology & modern laboratical

out comes, we could capture them.

In order to reduce the emission being burst forth from the coal power plant,

we could switch over to attentive source of energy swan as air, water & solar energy etc

.they must be mandated and car tidied by emission board , clean development mechanics

& Environmental protection agency still, system is not moving on the right direction the

private environmental in situation must be involved with the high level and standards and

guidance.

organisms. Land can be healthy or sick, fertile or barren , rich or poor , lovingly

nurtured or bled white . Our present attitudes and laws governing the ownership

and use of land represent an abuse of the concept of private property……Today

you can Murder land for private profit .You can leave the corpse for all to see and

nobody calls the police”.

4. “In the end, we will conserve only what we love, we will love only what we

understand and we will understand only if we are taught about mining”.

5. “To waste, to destroy, our natural resources, to skin and exhaust the land instead

of using it so as to increase its usefulness, will result in undermining in the days

of future the very prosperity which we ought by right to hand down to them”.

Mining, Environment and resources conservation

What is mining?

Mining is the extraction of minerals and metals from earth. Manganese, tantalum, copper,

tin, nickel, bauxite, iron ore, gold, silver and diamonds are just some examples of what is

mined.

Why mine?

Mining is a money making business. It gives job opportunities to many people. Not only

do mining companies proper, but governments also make money from revenues. Workers

also receive income and benefits.

What are minerals and metals used for?

Minerals and metals are very valuable commodities. For examples, manganese is a key

component of low cost stainless steel. It is also used to de colour glass, but in higher

concentrations, it actually makes lavender colored glass, tantalum is used in cell phones,

pagers and laptops. Copper and tin are used to make pipes, cookware etc. and gold, silver

and diamonds are used for making jewellery.

How does mining affect the environment?

Mining is generally very destructive to the environment. It is one of the main causes of

deforestation. In order to mine, trees and vegetation are cleared and burned. With the

ground completely bare, huge bulldozers are used to extract the metals and minerals from

the soil. In order to cluster the extractions, they use chemicals such as mercury, cyanide.

These chemicals go through pipes and are often discharged into rivers, streams and

oceans. This pollution contaminates all living organisms within the body of water.

What can we do as global citizens to curb the effects of mining?

1. Make companies who exploit developing countries accountable for their actions.

2. Write letters to governments who do not properly compensate people who have

been affected by pollution from mining companies.

3. Spread awareness of this issue by sharing our knowledge.

What are resources?

Page 66: INTRDUCTORY & MESSAGES - memcwcounciljabalpur.orgmemcwcounciljabalpur.org/JAL-MEMC-13/Souvenir.pdf · A.K.Singh Sr.Manager Mines Maihar Ceme nts V.K.Sharma Mines Manager Jaypee,

Everything available in our environment which can be used to satisfy our needs,

provided, it is technologically accessible, economically feasible and culturally acceptable

can be termed as “RESOURCE”

How does indiscriminate use of resources affect the nature?

Resources are vital for human survival as well as for maintaining the quality of life. It is

believed that resources are free gifts of nature. As a result, human beings used them

indiscriminately and this has led to the following major problems.

• Depletion of resources for satisfying the greed of few individuals.

• Indiscriminate use of resources has led to global ecological crises such as global

warming, ozone layer depletion, environmental pollution and land degradation.

Why there is need to conserve resources?

Resources are vital for any developmental activity. But irrational consumption and over

utilization of resources may lead to socio – economic and environmental problems. To

overcome these problems, resource conservation at various levels is important. Energy is

a basic requirement for economic development. The economic development plans

implemented since independence necessarily required increasing amounts of energy to

remain operational. As a result, consumption of energy in all forms has been steadily

rising all over country. India is presently one of the lease energy efficient countries in the

world.

So, we have to adopt a cautious approach for the judicious use of our limited energy

resources.

Mining, Environment and Mineral conservation

A

Mining is the extraction of valuable minerals or geological materials from the earth from

an ore body, vein, seam or reef which forms the mineralized package of economic

interest to the miner.

Ores recovered by mining include metals, coal and oil shale, gem stones, lime stone and

dimension stone, rock salt and potash, gravel and clay. Mining is required to obtain any

material that cannot be grown through agricultural processes or created artificially in a

laboratory or factory. Mining in a wider sense includes extraction of any non renewable

resource such as petroleum, natural gas or even water. Mining of stone and metal has

been done since pre historian times. Modern mining processes involve prospection for

ore bodies analysis of the profit potential of a proposed mine, extraction of the desired

materials and final reclamation of the land after the mine is closed.

The nature of mining processes creates a potential negative impact on the environment

both during the mining operations and for years after the mine is closed. This impact has

led to most of the world’s nations adopting regulations to moderate the negative effects of

mining operations. Safety has long been a concern as well and modern practices have

improved safety in mines significantly.

The earth has several natural resources like water, air, soil, minerals, trees, animals, oil

and gas. We all depend on these natural resources to live our daily lives. It would be

impossible to live without clean air, water or food. Our lives would be difficult without

oil or gas. In hopes of not running out of these resources we must conserve them.

Keeping areas undeveloped so there are forests, ponds to fish in, and beaches to stroll

along is an important step.

Conservation means saving things from loss or waste. For example, if you leave on a

light in a room and no one is using the electricity it is wasted. Turning out the light when

you are in no need of the electricity is conservation. Conservation allows us to save

things that can be used when we need them.

By conserving things from loss or wasteful actions we can protect plants or even animals,

which might otherwise disappear forever. In some places in the world there are food

shortages. Scientists have travelled to these places in hopes to help people grow better

crops and more of them. One serious issue for farmers around the world is soil erosion.

Also farmers who incorrectly cultivate their land will lose nutrients in the soil. These

Page 68: INTRDUCTORY & MESSAGES - memcwcounciljabalpur.orgmemcwcounciljabalpur.org/JAL-MEMC-13/Souvenir.pdf · A.K.Singh Sr.Manager Mines Maihar Ceme nts V.K.Sharma Mines Manager Jaypee,

nutrients help the plants to grow sufficiently. Nature is very complicated and

conversation can help.

To keep nature at its balance we must help all species to continue to exist. Conserving

undeveloped land helps wildlife as well as human life. Conservation helps in the circle of

life and all other natural resources. We should only use what we need and respect this

land we live in. everyone should respect the wildlife like the humpback whale, polar

bears and the giant sable antelope. These animals are in great need of conservation. These

animals are endangered species. What we can do affect the lives around us.

Conservationists help pass certain laws that protect these endangered species and even

plants.

Conservationists have helped a great deal throughout the years. One example is the

Roosevelt dam. It is the part of the salt water irrigation project and is located in central

Arizona. This contributes to the water power of the area. The economic use of this

resource for more than one purpose is a great example of conservation techniques. The

principles of conservation are intended to preserve the best outcome of change which is

necessary for any thriving society.
