“The hallmark of flow is a

feeling of spontaneous joy, even rapture, while

performing a task.”

“Similar mental states include:

to be in the moment,

present, in the zone, in the groove, or

keeping your head in the game.”

“With the knowledge [of flow], it is possible to achieve control of consciousness and turn even the most humdrum moments of everyday lives

into events that help the self grow.”

“After each episode of flow a person becomes

more of a unique individual, less predictable, possessed of rarer skills.”

What makes life better?

… but pleasure by itself it does not bring happiness

• Do not produce psychological growth

• Do not add complexity to the self

So…

…what makes life rewarding?

Not pleasant memories, but enjoyment

“Enjoyable events occur when…gone beyond what he/she has been programmed to do and achieved something unexpected, perhaps something even unimagined before.”

“Enjoyment is characterized by a forward movement: by a sense of novelty, of accomplishment.”

Conditions needed

Mihály Csíkszentmihályi, 1997

1. One must be involved in an activity with a clear set of goals. Adds direction and structure to the task.

2. Good balance between the perceived challenges of the task at hand and his or her own perceived skills.

3. The task at hand must have clear and immediate feedback. Helps to adjust performance to maintain the flow state.

Enjoyment has 8 major components

1. We are confronted with an activity/task we have a chance of completing

2. We can concentrate on what we are doing

3. Clear goals

4. Provides immediate feedback

5. Deep but effortless involvement, that removes from awareness the worries and frustrations of everyday life

6. Sense of control over actions

7. Concern for self disappears

8. Typically, sense of time is altered

We have the most positive experience when…

Connecting the dots – what to do

1. Set clear goals and create and monitor immediate feedback

2. Become immersed in the activity

1. Reasonable challenge

2. Concentration

3. Pay attention to immediate experience/ what is happening and learn to enjoy it

1. Lack of self-consciousness, no ego, outward focus

2. Literally anything that happens can be a source of joy

Design for flowRecognize

opportunities

1. Skapa konkreta och precisa “nästa steg”, mål/önskat resultat, och visioner

3. To concentrate on “Runway”

1. Collect loose ends in personal system and don’t keep them in the head

2. Process inbox and ToDo:s as often as needed

3. Do Weekly review weekly (and 20-50,00 feet as often as needed)

• Note to self: Strama upp GTD i en månad– Weekly review– Daily processing and review of todo-lists
