STUDENT HOTSPOTTING
The Interprofessional Student Hotspotting Learning Collaborative is an annual program
that trains interdisciplinary teams of students from schools around the country to apply a patient-
centered approach in working with individuals with complex medical and social needs.
• The six-month program is co-
hosted by:
• Camden Coalition of Healthcare
Providers
• Association of American Medical
Colleges (AAMC)
• Primary Care Progress (PCP)
• Council on Social Work Education
(CSWE)
• National Academies of Practice
(NAP)
COLLABORATIVE?
WHY
STUDENT HOTSPOTTING?
• Interdisciplinary patient
care is the future
• Early hands-on experience
with caring for patients with
complex health conditions
by addressing root causes
• Interdisciplinary curriculum
is now required
academically at many
institutions
• Healthcare is moving away from
fee-for-service towards an
outcome based approach
• HHS goals for the next 2 years:
• 30% of fee-for-service
Medicare payments tied to
quality or value through
alternative payment models
by the end of 2016
• 50% of payments to these
models by the end of 2018

• Intervention targets patients
showing patterns of high
utilization.
• These patients have frequent
contact with the medical system
without measurable
improvements in their health.
• As a small group, this population
is responsible for a large
proportion of healthcare costs.
• Barriers to care; system gaps
• Value of patient experience, story and taking a patient-
centered approach
• Importance of interdisciplinary collaboration and
coordinated care
• Resiliency
