The PresentersThe introductory course is presented by Des Brennan and Noel O'Riordan.

Des Brennan is an Incorporated Engineer and a member ofthe Engineering Council (UK).

First half of professional career in UK as Assistant Manager,Electrical Engineering Dept. Churchill Machine Tool Co. Ltd.He also spent 4 years in a similar capacity in USA. Des wassubsequently employed in Ireland as an Engineer Surveyorspecializing in the inspection and testing of electricalinstallations in potentially explosive atmospheres. On retiring

from the Insurance Industry, he has been similarly employed in his own company. Sincethe late 1990's, Des has been an active member of the ETCI Technical Committee No.6, which deals with all matters relating to electrical installations in potentially explosiveatmospheres, and most recently has been responsible for the development of theseTest Records and Sub-system Completion Certificates.

Eur.Ing. Noel O'Riordan is a Chartered Engineer and a Fellowmember of Engineers Ireland. He is also the Chairman of theETCI Technical Committee No.6 (Equipment for PotentiallyExplosive Atmospheres).

As a Factory Inspector in the Department of Labour, hespecialised in electrical safety and was responsible for thedevelopment of the national legislation rules for electricity inindustry, mines and quarries. When Ireland joined theEuropean Community, he was appointed national

representative on the standing committee for explosive atmospheres and a member ofthe European electricity working party on the Extractive Industries.

On leaving the inspectorate he set up a national and international consultancy service,specialising in the use of equipment for explosive atmospheres. He was appointedconsultant to the European Standards bodies CEN/CENELEC for the development ofelectrical and non-electrical standards under the ATEX Directive. He advised theEuropean Commission on this work and was a member of the ATEX standingcommittee and steering groups for the development of Directives and Guides.

This set, which normallyretails at €200, consists of a book of 10 Sub-system Completion Certificates, abook of 10 Test Record sheets and a book of 50 Continuation Test Record Sheets,all complete with full Guidelines.

ETCI has developed a new Sub-system Completion Certificate and Test Record forelectrical installations in potentially explosive atmospheres. These documents apply tonew and existing installations and sub-systems where any part of the installationtraverses hazardous areas. The sub-system Test Records become part of the supportdocumentation for installations requiring periodic inspection and testing.

This new concept of sub-system completion certification will be of special interest tothe pharmaceutical, petrochemical, medical appliance industries, oil and gasindustries, insurance industry, consulting engineers, local authorities and relevantGovernment Departments. This introductory course will have particular relevance toconsulting engineers, electrical contractors, testers and electricians involved in theinstallation, inspection and testing of electrical installations in potentially explosiveatmospheres.
