An investigation of



The intensity of rain can be classi edfrom «light rain» (2.5 mm or less perhour) to «violent rain» (50 mm or more

per hour).

The size of the raindrops is ranged from0.1 mm to 9 mm in diameter. Intensityand duration of rainfall are usuallyinversely related. That means highintensity storms are likely to be of shortduration and low intensity storms canhave a long duration. Smaller drops isshaped like a sphere. But the larger theyget, the bottom becomes more and moreat. Very large drops curve inward at the

bottom.

The speed of a raindrop depends onthe size. If there is no wind, a 0.5 mmdroplet has a speed of approximately 2meters per second. Large droplets, like5 mm in diameter, can have a speed of 9meters per second.

Rain is drops of liquid water fallingdown from the sky. It comes from clouds

which is consisting of moisture. Hotair can hold a lot of moisture, but asthe clouds moves higher, the air gets

colder. This results in water falling to theground, because the air can no longer

hold the water.



Our instinct tells us not to go into therain. It is a part of human nature. Whenour clothes gets wet, we get cold. Andno one likes to be cold.In extreme cases, wet clothes can even

be life-threatening.

Because of this we have developedmany ways of protecting us against get -ting wet by rain.

The weather can also have an impact onour mood. The impact can differ across

the world. In colder contries, like in

Scandinavia, people tend to get morestressed and depressed by cold, cloudyweather and rain, and especially if the

weather is unstable. It can also make people more sleepy than if the sun is

shining.But in countries with dry and warmclimate, rain can lift peoples mood.

The rain also make our surroundingsappear darker. Many materials have a

tendency to attract water which gives it adarker surface.

Not only are we affected by rain visually or by getting wet, but rain also affect our hearing. Rain contains a lot of energy, because of thegravity. When the rain hits the ground it creates noise. The amount of noise depends on how heavy it is raining. The sound of rain is animportant part of the experience. And some people can nd the sound of rain quite soothing.

One can conclude that it is many ways of covering against the rain; physically, mentally and visually.



Walls Rain can also be given a more de ned“shape”, for example as walls. Theinteresting about this concept is that therain is used as a «covering». Not in theway that it actually protects you fromanything physical, but it takes part increating a room feeling. It can be shapedin many ways horizonal.

Weight Rain can create a lot of weight when

collected.This concept is about collecting the rain,

and use it to induce objects. When therain collects and lls the «box» in the

vertical position, the box will get heavieron one side. It will therefore gradually

start rotating to a more horizonal posi-tion, and «transform» to a type of cover -ing. It will need some kind of plumb inthe bottom to make it rotate back as the

water evaporates.



When thinking of creating a coverto protect yourself against rain, it isimportant to remember the value ithas. Te aim shouldn’t necesseralybe only to get the rain away, but

maybe let it take part in making abetter design by using its properties.
