Energy

Uniquely equipped to bring energy to Algeria

A new planned power plant, featuring GE Energy’s F-class gas turbine technology, willhelp meet the rapidly growing energy needs of eastern Algeria when it enters service atthe end of 2011.

The new facility is expected to produce 1,200 megawatts of power, which will increaseAlgeria’s current installed generation capacity by approximately 18%. As one of thelargest combined-cycle power plants in the region, the project will help to meet Algeria’sgrowing electricity demand. Overall, GE has supplied approximately 70% of the gasturbines operating in Algeria.

Taking another important step toward meeting Algeria’s growing energy needs, Sonelgazhas signed service agreements with GE Energy. These agreements will help to improveefficiency, output and reliability of 51 gas turbines installed in 13 power plants across thecountry.

There are significant opportunities for GE’s Jenbacher gas engines, including flare gas andliquefied natural gas applications. Using effective alternative fuels provides additionalbenefits, such as reduction of flared gas and electrical power production.

Water

Providing 25% of Algiers’ drinking water

In 2008, GE completed the Hamma Seawater Desalination Plant, the largest plant of itskind in northern Africa, which provides two million Algiers residents with a reliable sourceof fresh drinking water every day.

• Joint venture with AEC (Algerian Electric Company – 30%)• Capable of producing 200,000 m3/day of drinking water• Operated by GE under a 25-year O&M agreement

Additional water opportunities in Algeria

• GE produces an additional 25,000 m3/day of water capacity in Algeria, spread across24 plants. Many of these plants use Electrodialysis Reversal (EDR) technology.

• By end-of-year 2010, there will be 1 million m3/day of seawater reverse osmosiscapacity that is operational. (This is in addition to Hamma's capacity.)

• The demand for seawater reverse osmosis systems, membranes and pretreatmentcartridge filters in desalination plants continues to grow. In the next two to three years, there is an opportunity to increase capacity to 2.7 million m3/day.

BCL304e Series Centrifugal CompressorSour gas, found in oil fields, poses several environmental problems. Whencompanies extract oil and gas from their wells, they can also release harmfulgreenhouse gases (GHG) into the environment. This centrifugal compressorfor sour gas injection compresses the associated gas (CO2 and other GHG)that is usually extracted from wells and re-injects it into the same reservoir. The pressure created due to the re-injection creates a unique environmentthat leads to an increase in the exploitation of reservoirs by up to 20%.

Did you know? Thanks to re-injection, the GE centrifugal compressor prevents GHG such asCO2 from being released into the atmosphere. These gases are usually flaredor vented into the air because it is the easiest, most convenient way for gasdrillers to dispose of them.

DLN-1 Upgrade Kit for Frame 5-2 gas turbineThis upgrade kit enables existing Frame 5-2 gas turbines running at partialload to meet more stringent NOx emission standards (42 ppm) with thepotential to reduce NOx emissions by up to 63%.

Did you know?GE’s DLN-1 IBH technology enables a Frame 5-2 gas turbine to operate at50% rather than 80% partial load, saving approximately 27 million pounds ofnatural gas, or approximately the amount used by more than 8,500 typicalU.S. households in a year.

DesalinationGE's advanced membrane technology transforms seawater and brackishwater into fresh water for drinking, irrigation and industrial applications.

Did you know?GE's Seawater Desalination Plant in Hamma, Algeria, provides 2 millionresidents of Algiers with reliable fresh water.
