Overall philanthropic trends
Philanthropic Trends – The US
Charitable donations hit record levels for second year in a row, at an estimated $373.25 billion (https://givingusa.org/insights/)
The total giving rate is expected to rise above the 5-year, 10-year, and 25-year annualized averages, demonstrating sustained resilience during recent difficult economic periods. (http://philanthropyoutlook.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/01/Philanthropy_Outlook_2016_2017.pdf)

The number of foundations has increased 46% over the last 20 years
114,000 public benefit foundations giving €53bn ($58bn in US) annually
Many European countries are developing umbrella bodies (akin to ACF in the UK) to help signpost fundraising charities to prospective donors

NCVO– The Road Ahead
2017 will be a challenging year for British politics and society – with far-reaching implications for the voluntary sector and its volunteers. As our government proceeds with delivering Brexit and enters into negotiations with the remaining 27 EU member states, Brexit will dominate the political agenda and almost completely monopolise the attention of decision makers. This will undoubtedly distract from existing policies such as devolution and the reduction of public spending, which will continue to be pursued.
The Triple Whammy
Increased need
Reduced statutory support
Diminishing investment returns
ICO
A steady rise in fundraising regulation
Fall in public trust: in 2016, the overall level of trust and confidence in charities has fallen to 5.7 out of 10. This is a significant decrease from a headline figure of 6.7 in 2012 and 2014. Trends in Trust Fundraising
Are Trusts tightening up their criteria?
Will Brexit have an effect?
Are the trends pointing to a more successful application rate outside London?
Future trends?
Gospel of Wealth - Carnegie
This, then, is held to be the duty of the man of Wealth: First, to set an example of modest, unostentatious living, shunning display or extravagance; to provide moderately for the legitimate wants of those dependent upon him; and after doing so to consider all surplus revenues which come to him simply as trust funds, which he is called upon to administer… -the man of wealth thus becoming the mere agent and trustee for his poorer brethren, bringing to their service his superior wisdom, experience and ability to administer, doing for them better than they would or could do for themselves.
Stone Family Fondation
The Foundation shares the same fundamental aim as most charities, which is to help people out of poverty. However, our approach is radically different. As a venture philanthropist, John brings a more business-like approach to a sector which is generally rather unbusiness-like. And our vision is to be a pioneering, innovative and a disruptive influence, constantly in search of new and better ways to solve entrenched problems.
Developing philanthropy
The fall of foundation staff and the rise of professional advisors:

Implications?
We need to educate our donors and share the journey together
Wealth creation leading to lots of new philanthropists
We can continue to rely on the generosity of the human spirit
