Visiting Fellow, Nottingham Trent University

From Medical to Forensic Research: the interconnectedness of Physics From drugs investigation to less lethal weapons at the Home Office, David has worked with trauma specialists, medical physics departments in hospitals and

universities and researched various police equipment and their implications on the body. Through several examples, this lecture will show how a degree in physics can prepare

you for work in all kinds of unexpected areas.

● Brian Clegg, Author, broadcaster Science and technology – the goal-driven golem

We have achieved amazing technological developments through scientific discovery. But there is a real danger if we try to direct scientific study purely with practical applications in mind. All the evidence is that the best breakthroughs come when we let

scientists explore freely.

Tuesday 10th October 2017 WORCESTER ● University of Worcester, EEG089 ● David Cross. IOP Hereford & Worcester Centre Friction, Stiction and Air-flow Constriction

Formula One cars seem to defy logic as well as the laws of physics but in reality they employ amazingly ingenious strategies to exploit physical processes in order to go fast.

Thursday 26th October 2017 23rd Annual Public Science Lecture, Huntingdon Hall. ● Dr Michael de Podesta, MBE. NPL Teddington How do you really know what the temperature is?

Temperature measurements are critical in manufacturing, engineering and science. We will explore, with demonstrations, what a measurement is, how people can be sure they have got ‘the right’ answer, the NPL’s ‘acoustic’ thermometer and making the most accurate

temperature measurements in human history.

WORCESTER ● University of Worcester, EEG089 ● Professor Brian Williams. Emeritus Professor of Petroleum

Geology, University of Aberdeen Wandering Continents: Evolution of the Atlantic Ocean

Early ideas on ‘continental drift’ were met with great scepticism. However, the evidence from Africa, South America and Australia (and the Atlantic Ocean) ultimately provided a compelling argument for what would become the unifying concept for

Planet Earth – Plate Tectonics.

Tuesday 5th December 2017 WORCESTER ● University of Worcester, EEG089 ● Colin Davidson. GE Grid Solutions From wind-farm to power socket - Connecting large-scale renewable power sources using DC

This talk will give an introduction to the technology of High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) power transmission, which is increasingly being used to help integrate large-scale renewable power sources to the grid. Some of the real-world engineering

challenges presented by this technology will be presented from the perspective of a physicist-turned-engineer.

Thursday 11th January 2018 WORCESTER ● University of Worcester, EEG089 ● Dr Natasha Jackson-Booth, CPhys, MInstP. QinetiQ Extreme Physics in Neutron Star Binaries

Neutron stars are city size stellar objects that are so dense gravity is approximately two billion times stronger than that on Earth. Some neutron stars exist in binary systems where their strong gravitational fields pull matter off the companion star. As the matter hits the

surface of the neutron star they ‘glow’ in X-rays and are some of the brightest X-ray sources in the sky. This talk will describe how the extreme conditions associated with neutron star binary systems can be used to investigate physics that cannot be replicated in laboratories.

Lectures & Outreach 2017-2018

The Institute of Physics is a leading international professional body and learned society, established to promote the advancement and dissemination of physics. The Institute has a world-wide membership and has a major international presence in:

• scientific publishing and electronic dissemination of physics;

• setting professional standards for physicists and awarding professional qualifications;

• promoting physics through scientific conferences, education and science;

• policy advice. Details about membership and professional qualifications can be found at: http://www.iop.org/membership/ For further information Institute of Physics - Hereford and Worcester Centre: J E Beale 07801365204 [email protected] Dr A C Smith 01684 569503 [email protected] If you have an idea for a topic that you would like to hear about, then please let us know. All of the IOP talks are free and open to anyone with an interest in science or technology. Your Hereford & Worcester committee is a small group who want to bring physics to all who would like to hear about current topics in research from experts in their fields. The committee has developed its activities steadily over the past 20 years and would like to do more. If you would like to help with our future programme or outreach activities then please get in touch.
