Apple iOS/MacBook Air Setup and SecurityApple devices when delivered to the end user are delivered with a small program built into the OS called Setup Assistant. When setting up an iOS device specifically an iPad your setup assistant has a different ap-pearance along with different options. You will begin the setup just as you would with a Mac-Book Air, you will begin by selecting your language and region. Your setup assistant will look similar to this:With setup assistant you will simply follow the onscreen instructions to get the device setup with the basic settings. Once the device is setup with the basic settings the you can begin a more detailed set up of the device. You will need to connect the iPad to a wireless network to have access to the internet. Once the iPad has the basic configuration completed you will want to be-gin securing the iPad. An end user that is making system preference changes to an iPad or MacBook Air will need an Administrative Account or Administrative Privileges. You will ac-

cess the System Preferences by clicking on the icon that looks like a cog and is named Set-tings. See image below:

You will then begin securing the iPad once you have navigated into the Settings Pane, the first

thing that needs to be completed is putting a Passcode on the lock screen. You will enter the

Passcode settings pane that is located on the left hand side of the Settings Pane. Once you

have accessed the Passcode settings the Passcode needs to be turned on, after the Passcode

is turned on you will need to decide if you would like a Simple Passcode (4 number passcode)

While in the Passcode settings you will adjust when the passcode is required, you will also ac-

cess this pane if the passcode needs to be changed. Now that your iPad is secure you can now

add your college employee email account as well as any other email accounts that you would

like to access from you iPad. In the pane on the lefthand side of the screen you will enter the

Mail, Contacts, Calendars setting, you can see in the image above where this tab is located.

Now that you have entered the Mail, Contacts, Calendar setting you will now touch the Add Ac-

count tab, you will proceed by touching the Exchange tab. In this setting you will configure the

settings that are necessary to access you college employee email account. You will need to en-

ter the following information:

Server: owa.aacc.edu (This is critical in completing the connection, otherwise it will fail)

As

you

see above these are the settings necessary for the connection to your college employee email,

once completed you can adjust the Mail Days to Sync and how it is received. In the Mail setting

you can also sync other details from your college mail account such as your contacts, calendar

and other details. Now that you are able to send and receive your college employee email you

will want to make sure that you have set up and enabled an iCloud account. Another critical set-

ting that needs to be enabled is the You will need an iCloud account to download items from the

App Store and to set another critical setting on the iPad. The last security setting that you need

to set is the Find My iPad setting, you need to be sure that this is turned on. You can access

this setting my touching the iCloud tab and then touch the slide to turn on the Find My iPad set-

ting. The last step that needs to be taken to secure your iPad is to open the App Store and

download the Lookout App. You will complete this by touching the App Store icon which looks

like so:

Once in the App Store you will want to enter in the search bar located in the upper right hand

corner the name of the app that you are wanting to install (Lookout).

After you download the Lookout Security App open the app and set up an account, this is nec-

essary to use the application. Now that you have setup an account open the Lookout App once

again and enter your credentials if they are needed at this point. Configure the application if

needed and make any other personal settings or adjustments that you would like to make to

your iPad. Enjoy using your secure iPad!

This is the continuation of the MacBook Air configuration from Page 1

On page one you were given an introduction to the Setup Assistant for a MacBook Air, I

will not repeat the introduction in this section. Please follow the instructions on Page 1

for the Setup Assistant to walk through the basic setup of your device. Now that you

have your basic configuration completed we will begin to walk through additional setup

and security for your device. The next step to securing your MacBook will be setting a

Firmware password, you set the Firmware password to prevent unauthorized users from

using any startup-interrupt keyboard shortcuts on your computer. This protects your

system from someone trying to circumvent your installation of OS X. I will warn that the

Firmware Password is not in any way tied to user accounts, we will setup FileVault after

completing this step to protect your personal information and data. To set the Firmware

Password you will need to restart your computer, as soon as you click on restart you

need to hold down the option key. The option key is located in the bottom row of keys

on either side of the space bar. Holding down the option key will start you in Startup

Manager, once in Startup Manager you will need to click on Utilities in the top menu bar

and select Firmware Password Utility. You will first click Turn On Firmware Password

and then

set the

Firmware Password at this point, it is crucial that this password is not forgotten as it

cannot be reset or removed. Below is an image of the Firmware Password Utility:

Now that the Firmware Password is set you will need to exit Startup Manager, in the

menu bar you will open the Apple Menu by clicking on the Apple in the upper-left hand

corner and then clicking Restart. Once your computer restarts you will login as you

would normally login, the Firmware Password will not affect your

normal login procedures. Once logged in you will now set your

computer up to encrypt all of your personal information and data,

this is done by setting up FileVault 2. FileVault is located in the

System Preferences, System Preferences is the gears icon.

In the System Preferences you will click on the Security and Pref-

erences icon and then click on FileVault in the Security and Prefer-

ences top bar. You will need to click on the lock that is located in the bottom left corner

and enter your credentials, you need to unlock the preferences because you are making

changes to the system preferences that affect the entire computer. Once you have en-

tered your credentials you will now turn FileVault on and you can see the progress of

the encryption of your data in the progress bar, you will need your master password to

decrypt your information after FileVault is turned on. At this point there are only two

more steps that you must take to assure that your MacBook is secure, it will not only be

secure against theft it will also be secure on the Internet. While in the System Prefer-

ences you will need to turn on Find My Mac, you will complete this by entering the

iCloud preferences. Click on the iCloud icon, this icon is located in the third row first

icon. In iCloud preferences you

will scroll to the bottom of the list

on the left side of the preferences

pane, at the bot- tom of the list you

will see the Find My Mac listing,

you need to se- lect this box. Find

My Mac gives you the ability to

locate your computer if stolen as soon as it connects to the Internet. You can be notified

by email or you can simply check the status as you see fit and it will be plotted on a lo-

cal map for you to retrieve your computer. Finally the last thing that you need to do to

complete the securing of your computer is to download and antivirus. Do not believe the

statements that Mac’s never get infected with Malware or Viruses, that is completely

FALSE. In this last step you will need to open the App Store and in the search bar that

is located in the top left corner type AVG Antivirus. You will select the icon in the search

results box AVG Antivirus, you will double-click the icon to initiate the installation of the

antivirus. You will follow the instructions given on screen. Once the installation is com-

plete you will locate your newly installed application and open it to assure that the virus

database is up to date. You are now secure and ready to use your new MacBook, en-

joy!
