Past president Jim Smith reflects on key accomplishments

It has been an honor to serve as your ISCPA president this

past year. I am grate-ful to my partners and firm members for al-lowing me the time to serve in this role, an experience that has been one of the high points in my career. I’m thankful to the firm for supporting ISCPA by paying member dues for em-ployees and encouraging them to volunteer and serve the profes-sion.

Some highlights from my year as president are attending the AICPA national conference with Cindy Adams and getting to know the management team at ISCPA. I appreciate the relationships I have devel-oped with fellow board members and meeting a variety of members such as past presidents, retired CPAs and

young professionals who all share a passion for our profession. In addition, ISCPA completed a number of key projects including the 100th Anniversary Celebra-tion events, office relocation and rebranding, and the collaborative effort to transition peer review to the Illinois Society.

This was also a year of learn-ing for me. I witnessed firsthand how the Society works on our behalf with the Iowa Accoun-tancy Examining Board and other organizations at the national and state level. I also learned about challenges the organization faces

such as maintaining membership and increasing revenue.

While my term as president has ended, our work as a profession is far from over. There is more to do. I encourage all of you to stay, or become, involved with ISCPA as they continue their work to advance our success and help us to provide solutions to our em-ployers and clients. Volunteer for a committee or task force, attend the Iowa CPA Day at the Capitol, make the effort to establish a re-lationship with your local govern-ment officials, and support ISCPA education, events and programs. Or simply reach out and share your point of view on a profes-

sion issue. They are our Society and they are here to help us.

Finally, I encourage you to con-sider what you can do to help strengthen the profession. For-tunately, as mentioned by AICPA President Barry Melancon at the Annual Meeting & Leader-ship Conference, CPAs are first among financial professionals in positive perception with busi-ness decision makers. However, we face challenges like non-CPA competition, technology changes, and educating business leaders and the general public about the advantage of hiring a CPA for the workforce and as a trusted advi-sor. Additionally, we are seeing a decline in the number of account-ing graduates sitting for the exam. It’s crucial that we recruit and promote young people to become CPAs for the sustainment of the profession.

Meet your new ISCPA president: Mike Meinders

Mike Meinders, managing partner with Carney Alex-ander Marold & Co in Wa-

terloo, assumed his role as 2015-16 president of ISCPA May 1. We had the opportunity to visit with Mike about growing up in Iowa, his career as a Iowa CPA, his involve-ment in the profession and what he’d like to accomplish this year.

Where did you grow up?In Waterloo. My dad had his own cement contracting business and my mom worked at Rath Packing Company. I have two older sisters and an older brother.

Tell us about your first job?I was a gopher for my dad at a young age. In high school, I quick-ly figured out that he had me help him when he needed my back to swing a sledgehammer or push a wheelbarrow. I started working at Hy-Vee my junior year and did about 32 hours a week there while helping my dad in the morning until I graduated from college.

What interested you in account-ing?Numbers never intimidated me. I would see a column of them and try to figure out what they meant. My friend’s dad was a CPA and their lifestyle seemed comfort-

able so I knew it was a career with good opportunities to make a liv-ing. I worried about having no life outside of work during the week because my parents were always worn out. Not that being a CPA isn’t hard work – it’s just different.

How did your career progress?My friend’s dad worked for Car-ney at the beginning of his career. I contacted him for a reference when I was looking for a job. I started working there in 1975 as a staff accountant – a lot of paper audit workpapers, completing tax forms by hand, filling in input sheets for individual returns. Technology meant a calculator instead of an adding machine. We weren’t really big on titles and I moved to senior level when I got to be in charge of more things. In 1981, I became a partner and then managing partner as chair of our executive committee in 1997. This firm has always been a good fit and I’m grateful for the opportu-nities they have given me.

Who inspired you to take a lead-ership role with ISCPA?When I was younger, Scott Nel-son was a partner at my firm and involved with ISCPA. He got me interested in practice monitoring

and encouraged me to join the ISCPA Practice Review Commit-tee. The real exposure came when I was chair of the Peer Review Committee for three years and traveled to the national confer-ence where I had my eyes opened to the work the Society and AICPA did in that area.

What would you like to accom-plish during your term?I would like more people to come together and be involved in the Society. There is great work being done on our behalf beyond educa-tion and networking that benefits the full profession – now and in the future. I don’t think a lot of people working in the profession realize this and only a small majority are fully engaged in what the Society is doing. Encourage your employ-ees and other young professionals you meet to be members of ISCPA and be engaged in their profes-sion. Encourage your friends’ kids and other young people in your community to consider this rewarding profession. Encourage-ment from my friend’s dad and Scott Nelson motivated me along the way. Sometimes that is all it takes.

Spare time interests: Golf is my passion, but it does not like me much. Patti says I should have the game perfected by now because I am always reading everything I can about it. Unfortunately, it has become a case of paralysis by analysis. Our other love is bicycling. Most of our vacations are spent taking weeklong bicycle tours.

CPAs score fun day at golf classic The 2nd annual Iowa CPA Golf Classic was in full swing May 7 at The Legacy Golf Club in Norwalk. Thank you to the members, guests and sponsors who attended this year’s event. Golfers purchased mulligans and chances to participate in a marshmallow drive contest that raised over $1,000 for the Iowa CPA Education Foundation. New modes of learning proposed for CPE

Continuing professional edu-cation credit for nano-learn-ing and blended learning,

two emerging methods for edu-cating CPAs, would be enabled under standards revisions pro-posed last month. The AICPA and the National Association of State Boards of Accountancy (NASBA) jointly proposed the changes to the Statement on Standards for Continuing Professional Educa-tion (CPE) Programs, which was last revised in 2012. Enabling na-no-learning and blended learning would align the standards with recommendations of the AICPA Future of Learning Task Force.

“We are experimenting with dif-ferent methods of learning for

our members,” said Cindy Ad-ams, ISCPA CEO. “Everyone has different expectations and needs and we are focused on the best CPE experience we can give our CPAs, no matter what the learn-ing delivery method is.” Cindy was a member of AICPA’s Future of Learning Task Force, which has advocated evolving CPE to reflect the realities of shifting workforce dynamics.

In Balance: work/life well-being seriesBy Emily Heeren, ISCPA Family and Workplace Issues Committee

Editor’s note: In Balance is a series from Iowa CPAs featuring a variety of topics to improve your work/life well-being.

If you are like me, hearing that alarm go off on Monday morn-ing can send shivers down

your spine. Ten more minutes, please! But then your mind starts to kick in and the laundry list of everything you need to do be-fore you even walk out the door begins to accumulate. Get ready, pack lunch, get the baby ready, find show and tell item, check email … by the time you get to work you are exhausted, and for some reason your boss expects you to work for 9 to 10 hours!

If you are a new parent or even if this is your second or third time around, adding another member to your family can make what felt like a simple activity a monu-mental task. I recently returned to work after my second child and finding that work-life balance again has been a challenge. I did some research and here are my top five tips to make the adjust-ment easier:

1. Do as much as you can the night before. It’s the last thing you want to do after you tuck the kids in bed, but washing the favorite cereal bowl or a round of bottles will set you miles ahead in the morning. Set out your clothes and your kid’s clothes the night before. Pack lunch, milk, snacks or whatever you need for the next day. Set everything you need to take with you by the door, or even better – in the car.

2. Give yourself a break and ask for help. It is our nature to want to do everything to

perfection. We have adapted our tick and tie mentality to every aspect of our lives and when something is out of balance, so are we. It’s time to give yourself a break and allow others to help you. How often have we heard a neigh-bor or a relative offer to help and dismissed it as just a nice gesture? Take them up on their offer! Let someone shov-el your sidewalk, make your family dinner, or even watch the kids for an hour while you get groceries.

3. Make time for yourself. I know this seems impossible, but it is so critical to being a better you. Feeling uptight or find yourself being short with others? It is probably time for a little bit of r and r. Depend-ing on what works for you, here’s a couple of options.

a. Get up a little earlier. Enjoy your morning cup of coffee while the whole house is asleep.

b. Take a break at lunch. Go out to eat with friends or do something for yourself.

c. Take a personal day. While the kids are at daycare, spend the day however you like and skip paying for a babysitter.

d. Don’t feel guilty about any of the above!

4. Be flexible with your sched-ule. You have a million de-mands in any given day and only 24 hours to do them. As-suming your employer is open to a little flexibility, let your work and personal schedule blend. It is ok if you need to take an hour in the middle of the day to get groceries or if

you need to finish up a pre-sentation after the kids go to bed.

5. Enjoy it. I think we have all learned ... time goes fast whether we want it to or not. Don’t wish away this time, even if it is stressful. Our children will only be little for a short time. Soon enough they will be out on their own and we will miss the craziness of the morning routine. Cherish the happy moments as they come.

I hope my tips have helped you adjust to the working parent routine. It will take some practice, but I think we can all get there. Good luck!

Free workshop for office administrators

Group administrators and office managers are en-couraged to attend IS-

CPA’s TEAM Workshop, July 21, 2015, from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at ISCPA. Guest speaker will be Lori Vande Krol, the founder of Life Made Simple LLC. Lori is a certi-fied organization and productiv-ity consultant who will discuss or-ganizing tips to accomplish work and better manage time and information. Don’t forget to renew your certificate or license this month! Renew online at www.licensediniowa.gov or by mail.

To renew electronically, you’ll need:• Your certificate number.• The last four digits of your social security number.• A MasterCard, Discover card, or Visa credit card.

Additional tips:• Confirm your total CPE hours only if you plan to have an active

certificate.• CPAs who renew inactive do not need to report CPE.• Do not send your CPE documents to the Iowa Accountancy Exam-

ining Board (IAEB) unless requested.• The renewal deadline is June 30.

In July, you may still renew online. However, you will be assessed a pen-alty, and your certificate, license or permit will be considered lapsed until the process has been completed. CPA firms receive free financial statement review

Iowa CPA firms are encour-aged to take advantage of a free and confidential financial

statement review through ISCPA’s Practice Review Committee. This member service is a great way to get a second opinion on how your report compares to profes-sional standards. You can also use the committee reviews as part of your annual “monitoring” process. Guidelines and instruc-tions on how to participate will be provided to firms in June. With the diversified expertise of com-mittee members, they are able to review reports under all levels of service, including audits, compila-tions, reviews and special reports (bank examination reports, fore-casts, etc.). Lifetime Financial Literacy: elementaryBy Julie Thelen, ISCPA Financial Literacy Committee

Editor’s note: Lifetime Financial Literacy is a series from Iowa CPAs that highlights financial health tips and best practice sources you can share with clients, friends and family.

Remember when you were in elementary school? For some of us, it seems like 60

years ago and for others, well ... it was 60 years ago! The world that kids are growing up in today is very different from the world you grew up in. That’s why it’s impor-tant to educate ourselves on what modern elementary students are learning, what they should be learning and the best way to reach them.

What is money?Ask an elementary student: What is money? Growing up a century ago, a typical response might have been “green paper” or “silver coins.” Today, a likely response is probably related to a piece of plastic. Can we blame them? How many of us actually use cash or let our children see us use cash? Most of our spending today is done with a credit or debit card. How do we teach a child the value of a dollar when they don’t see it? Many beliefs about things in this world are already forming for kids at this age. It is a good time to have a conversation with them about money and how you spend it, or don’t spend it.

Wants vs. needsA point that is important for small children to learn is the differ-ence between needs and wants. Seems simple, right? Sure, it’s simple to talk about. But kids learn by example. Are you teach-ing your child that needs come first and you don’t always get what you want? It’s easy not to give your child everything he or she wants. But maybe an ex-ample of the parent not getting what he or she wants would be a better lesson for a child.

Save, share, spendThe Financial Literacy Commit-tee has adopted three main ideas for small children to learn about money: Save, share and spend smart. Start with a conversation and then show them, by example, how to save, share and spend smart. Next, give them an oppor-tunity to learn hands-on by giving them a small amount of money and help them make the decision to save, share and spend their money wisely. We like to shelter our children from many things in this society, but financial literacy should not be one of them. Teach-ing your child or other’s children about money and finances doesn’t make them worry about it, it makes them smart about it.

Nation’s CPAs call for IRS service improvements

CPA profession leaders jour-neyed to Capitol Hill last month to make the case

for several issues of importance to the profession and the public, including the need to improve Internal Revenue Service (IRS) taxpayer services. The visits are a highlight of the three-day meet-ing of the AICPA’s governing council in Washington, D.C.

Iowa CPAs in attendance in-cluded ISCPA CEO Cindy Adams; 2015-16 ISCPA President Mike Meinders, managing partner at Carney Alexander Marold & Co LLP in Waterloo; ISCPA Federal Key Person Coordinator Steve Marlow, CFO of Care Initiatives Inc in West Des Moines; and

AICPA Elected Council Represen-tative Mark Wackerbarth, man-aging partner at Denman & Com-pany LLP in West Des Moines.
