Server virtualisation project enables increased business agility and assured business continuity
A proactive approach to service improvement by BT under a ten-year outsourcing agreement has increased application performance and improved business resilience for the City of Edinburgh Council
BT inherited a diverse array of equipment and operating systems, running a wide variety of applications
Servers were not centrally hosted but distributed throughout the Council
Support costs were escalating and concern was growing about the longevity and resilience of the estate
BT decided that in order to safeguard service it needed to implement greater control and consolidate the server estate into a centralised data centre environment
Business issue
30 servers running 19 applications migrated into a hosted virtual server environment, with zero unscheduled downtime
Applications run more quickly, are more reliable, and are available at all times
Enhanced resilience and assured business continuity
A second phase of the virtualisation project is now being planned
Result
IT Outsourcing
Fully BT Managed Server virtualisation hosted within a data centre environment, using VMWare ESX Server virtual infrastructure software
Solution
“The whole project was managed very smoothly by BT and most users of our applications have been completely unaware of the transition. But what all of our people have noticed is that applications now run much more quickly, are much more reliable, and are available at all times.”
Andrew UnsworthHead of IT
The City of Edinburgh Council
What is BT’s solution?
• Per customer single site • Server & storage only• Manually deploy, manage & change
• Per customer single site• Customer self service • Automation of deploy, manage & change
• Network, Server, Storage • Shared, multi site, global• Click to buy/build • Full Autonomics/Automation • Pre provisioned
Creating and Managing the Virtual Data Centre
During the creation of the VDC, the customer can:
• Add virtual servers (specifying parameters such as capacity performance)
• Select the Internet bandwidth
• Add Value Added Services
• Set the firewall rules
The customer is given a price for this VDC.
The new VDC is easy to manage. The customer can:• Check various reports
(e.g. Bandwidth, Firewall Rules, Performance, Storage, Asset Information etc.)
• Control the status of the virtual machine
• Modify specific properties of the VDC

Couple of Summaries
“Any infrastructure-as-a-service offering that can provide a platform where organisations can scale their computing, network, and storage requirements in real time, according to their needs, will have obvious appeal.”
Roy Illsley, Senior Research Analyst, Butler Group
“BT is one of the very first movers in Europe with its infrastructure-as-a-service offer and the only global provider that will be deploying this service across a vast network of data centres both in the UK and Europe. Other differentiators for BT include a strong central platform allowing customers to provision services on the fly and a solid professional services organisation to support customers with higher end requirements.”
