Bare root strawberries can flower and produce fruit

anytime temperatures are between 35 and 85

degrees

Planting Guide Choosing a site:

Planting/Care:

Harvesting/Storage:

Plant as soon as possible. Until planting, keep roots moist but not wet, in the refrigerator

Avoid sites recently planted with strawberries, blackberries, raspberries, or vegetables in the

Solanaceae family: tomatoes, potatoes, eggplant, peppers

Amend soil with compost before planting and plant in area with good drainage and full sun

Plant early to mid-April

Soak roots (not the whole plant) in warm water for 30 minutes prior to planting

Dig holes spaced 12" apart that are deep and wide enough for the roots without crowding

Make sure to spread the roots and make the crown level, but not covered with soil

Water the newly planted strawberries

Cover soil with mulch to keep fruit off the ground (straw is a popular choice)

Weed control is extremely important for successful strawberry growth

Amend soil with compost each spring and replenish mulch as needed

For the first year only, pinch off flower buds until late May to allow good root development,

after that allow fruit to develop

Harvest by pinching off the stem, not by pulling the fruit itself
