Dear colleagues,We all are risk takers. It is in our genes. Without taking risks, we would not have chosen a profession so challenging, fast developing and innovative, - with minimal rules and regulations, compared to other fields. But: the risks, that we are willing to accept for ourselves, are much higher than the risks, we accept for our patients.Think of Joseph Murray, the Nobel Prize winner in plastic surgery: by performing the first organ transplantation he put his career at stake and those who knew him can tell that he would never have forgiven himself if this experiment turned out to be unsuccessful. His ingenious idea to start off with identical twins minimized the risks for his patients and he continued to care for all of them throughout his entire life. However, not all innovations in plastic surgery turned out being so successful: although more and more restrictions are coming up, new devices and materials were introduced without appropriate testing in long-term studies. In 1992, when the FDA ban on gel-filled implants shocked the world, we - a group of European plastic surgeons - founded EQUAM, - the European Committee on Quality Assurance and Medical Devices in Plastic Surgery in order to provide surveillance systems for patients safety and offer partners for cooperation with health authorities.Through our network we had access to case reports about problems with fillers and new types of implants (soybean oil, hydrogel!) much earlier and react rapidly. The awareness for health risks, related to devices, increased among plastic surgeons. Thanks to the plastic surgery community in Spain and France, the PIP scandal was uncovered. This issue kept us - the PIP expert group of the Scientific Committee of the European Commission - busy till today.EQUAM changed from European to International and turned into IQUAM, - now the Scientific Clearing House of IPRAS.In our 11th IQUAM Congress and Consensus Conference, to be held in Budapest April 10 - 13, 2014, we shall present the latest meta-analyses on breast implants and, by then, we shall be allowed to release the report of the expert group, - with surprising results. But more and more cutting edge topics will arise, - many of them deal with less invasive techniques in aesthetic surgery - urgently desired and embraced by patients around the world: fat grafting, soft tissue fillers, stem cells and many more. Not only you will be exposed to new scientific evidence, there will be practical recommendations as well: the IPRAS Academy for Aesthetic Training will hold a course on Fat Grafting.Furthermore the IPRAS Trainees Association invites residents from all over the world to join their Trainees Association meeting, which also will be held along with the IQUAM Congress and Consensus Conference. Plus: you will spend unforgettable days with us in one of the world›s most beautiful and charming cities with unique attractions: one afternoon at the traditional “Gellert” Bath and SPA, many years ago, became one of the funniest experiences in my life.Already convinced? Have a safe trip to Budapest; we all look forward to welcome you there!

Cordially yours

As the New Year starts, I would like to send my warmest wishes to our colleagues; all Plastic Surgeons around the world! And as history has shown us, Plastic Surgery as a most comprehensive discipline, will be even more alive and better, continuing to include new techniques and consolidate old ones. Trainees around the world will continue to learn about the universe of our Specialty so they can eventually be providing the State of the Art in their practice to all patients.IPRAS and their members worldwide endeavor to provide means for the continuation of teaching and learning. Through the “ Academies” , the Board of Trustees, or through the multiple workshops, meetings and congresses endorsed and/or run by IPRAS, we support teaching and dissemination of knowledge concerned to the current practice of Plastic Surgery.Incidentally, in Brazil, the Department of Plastic Surgery of the Federal University of São Paulo ( Prof. Lydia Masako Ferreira), after an initiative of the Technical Chamber in Burn Care of the Federal Council of Medicine, has added a ( voluntary ) fourth year of training in Burns, on their Residency Program. This fourth year of training, the Brazilian equivalent to a Subspecialty Fellowship, allows the willing resident to then become particularly proficient in Burn Care, as well as eventually be certified at the end of that period, through an exam, issued by the Federal Council of Medicine, in that area of treatment. Our Specialty examinations will still be given by the Brazilian Society of Plastic Surgery to every person who has finished his or her three year training in Plastic Surgery. Boards of certifications in Plastic Surgery will continue to evaluate for the overall knowledge and ability of the candidates and give certificates regarding the Specialty.Although Fellowships are common existence around

the world, and also in our country, there was a need in Brazil to create such an extra training year, so the resident could eventually be trained more intensively in that specific area of practice. This extra year was created as an incentive. So more people could go into a specific area of reconstructive plastic surgery, after his or her regular training – the additional certification will be taken as a bonus. Similar initiatives are expected to occur in other subspecialty areas.Fellowships in specific aspects of Plastic Surgery obviously evolved from the need to a more profound knowledge in these subspecialty areas. In several countries, there are Services which traditionally offer Fellowships in Microsurgery, Hand Surgery, Maxillofacial Surgery and so on – comparably to the number of residents we train, I believe that we all have an obligation to make sure that all our residents are exposed to an as wide as possible spectrum of Plastic Surgery aspects. Experience provides knowledge and ingenuity for decision making and further developments. Curiosity, natural abilities, performance and perseverance will lead the surgeon throughout his professional life, when we all continue to seek new knowledge and fortify old ones. This year and the upcoming years, IPRAS is and will be 100% committed to providing knowledge and disseminating Plastic Surgery around the world – as we have learned from our examples at home , regardless our origins, and eventually from experiences abroad, all of us are happier to share this experience with whomever is willing and prepared for it !!!I wish you all the Happiest and most Prosperous New Year!!!

Authors, regardless their medical expertise ought to know how to write an article without breaking the law by plagiarizing other people work. Instructions are easy to be found as they are printed in several journals. Our attempt in this article is to explain the rules and show to our readers it is just a piece of cake. All steps of creating an article are important, though bibliography is the baby step and should be a priority. Through it an author is aware whether his contribution is original, or if it lapses to previously published articles by others. To begin with priority, law prevails pioneers who wrote or expressed publically their opinion regardless the subject. First comes, first goes. This Editorial point the reason why bibliography on any paper, or literature quote used in articles should always be carefully chosen, accurate and complete.Unfortunately, articles are not always written under the proper objectivity authors ought to. The reasons vary though usually it is a result of neglection. Usually an author due to lack of knowledge neglects to include bibliography. Usually authors are not aware of the steps they should follow when they use any phrase, quote or even a point already published by someone, somewhere online or written anywhere else. Consequences of inadequate research on previous authorships range from immediate to delayed reactions. These reactions may take place in scientific meetings when live discussions may alter from minor remarks (without mentioning it is another’s author work) to different levels of imitation as for example take credits for research that was never conducted by the lecturer. In this case the pioneer is allowed to proceed legally and regain the punishment

of the plagiarist. To avoid these uncomfortable situations, there is a quite simple ad-hoc procedure one may follow. To begin with, the author of an article should not feel that a similar subject, that was previously published, has not all the correct references in relation to that subject. A scientific publication needs direct scientifically proven conclusion based on personal research usually combined with previously described techniques up to original procedures or techniques inspired by the author himself. Repeatedly, authors tend to publish results, without including brief details of the source from which a “discussion point” or piece of “factual information” is drawn or in a worst case scenario they do it selectively. Bibliography allows the reader to fully acknowledge sources. Usually this is a common phenomenon in book chapters or even medical journals when a “common subject” has a numerous references that were copied from previously published articles. This is a typical attempt to demonstrate they have conducted a comprehensive literature review. On our personal opinion, it is believed that an imperative research is mandatory in order to state who the pioneer of a conception is and who are the followers or the developers of it. The credit and the merit belong to the original author and should always be remarked. As mentioned previously the correct procedure of referencing is usually omitted. The reaction of a pioneer to plagiarism varies according to the person. As it is expected some are quite strict and intolerant and they pursue reference with legal acts. Others though may show, surprisingly, resilience along with patience without any backlash. Apparently

Page 8: IPRAS JOURNAL,15th ISSUE,JANUARY 2014

8 IPRAS Journal www.ipras.org Issue 15

this editorial eliminates analysis of the reaction as it is based on personal psychology and may not be predicted. Each and every person is allowed to react as he/she wishes yet the fact that fundamentalists should always gain the credits is not negotiable and authors should respect it and act properly by following fundamentalist process.Further emphasizing on the matter, not mentioning the name of the pioneer is a severe lack on any article even outside our medical specialty and sometimes it may happen on purpose. Violation of copyrights causes notable issues. Unfortunately there is no magic potion to revert this situation yet a continuing campaign recommending complete bibliographic searches may educate authors to respect the regular process. Education is crucial regarding this matter, and physicians ought to espouse the idea from the freshmen university years. Our country in collaboration with Brazilian Society of Plastic Surgery, has already realized the necessity of bibliography by developing special sessions on regional and national events by analyzing the complete proper way of writing papers that are accepted throughout the nation as well as internationally. Violation of copyrights consists in every social and cultural level so these programs occur in every aspect of human activities as well.Secondly: Authors should publish multiple times their contributions in order to give the opportunity to others to insert additional ideas, additional with other tactic or further detailed techniques. It is also allowed to make either slight or complete changes to the title with supplemental/new illustrations. The article may be resent to the same or another Journal. This is ethically and technically accepted. Several examples are observed in the literature as well. On the other hand when an article is published just one time there is the risk of “ostracism”, especially if in following publications, by other authors the pioneer is omitted. To be fair though we should state

that sometimes authors may neglect referencing the pioneer or even mention it incorrect due to fallacious research. Plagiarism undoubtedly shall happen again despite the campaigns though our strong belief is that proper education and stimulation from the early university years shall reduce the percentage in the near future. Moreover Plastic Surgeons Societies should establish in their bylaws a necessity for each and every member to publish at least one article every two to three years in their National Journal or in another Journal of Plastic Surgery. These determinations in addition to sessions on learning how to write and publish scientific articles occur more often in our National Society.THIRD Another “selective barrier” is when each and every article to be published is scanned and approved by Journal reviewers. Articles should be categorized according the topic, and then sent to the responsible department in order to pass through evaluation. During the revision period reviewers meticulously analyze references, marking and inserting corrections wherever they are found. In other words, reviewers are allowed to manage/alter literature review. In other words be responsible for the final outcome regarding to violation of copyrights. To sum up with adding up the above methods should significantly increase the percentage of plagiarism though it does not guarantee 100% of success due to unpredictable psychological behavior.Last but not least, continuous technological developments in human societies, shall give the opportunity to perform automatized search online and avoid unintentional oversight. There are several online auto-directions on plagiarism to help authors’ double check previous publication. Just pressing some “clicks” away auto-corrections are available for everyone regardless medical expertise. The decision is in our hands.

The plastic surgery family around the world recently lost one of its giants.

Thomas Rees died in November 14, 2013 after liver cancer complications.

He was not only a highly esteemed and widely- honored plastic surgeon but he was also a true pioneer and an innovator in our specialty. Thomas Rees was a true gifted educator, a humanitarian and a sculptor.

After concluding his General surgery and Plastic surgery trainings in Rochester NY and New York City he achieved a fellowship at the Queen Victoria Hospital in East Grinstead, in Sussex, England and had the opportunity to be trained by the famous, Sir Archibald McIndoe. This connection was instrumental for his professional career and his subsequent involvement to volunteer surgery in Africa.

He established a very successful plastic and aesthetic surgery practice in New York City in 1957, a period when there were only a “handful” of practicing plastic surgeons in the city. During this period aesthetic surgery was frowned upon by most members of the medical community and was certainly not as popular to the mass public as it is today. Education in aesthetic surgery for the trainees none existed or

it was, in the best case scenario, limited. Most of the few experienced surgeons remained secretive and protective towards their techniques.

Dr. Rees nearly “single handedly” changed this approach and dedicated to his professional career through promoting aesthetic surgery as an equal subspecialty within plastic surgery by teaching his techniques and his innovations in conferences, lectures and symposiums; He educated young plastic surgeons through the aesthetic fellowships in the Manhattan Eye, Ear and Throat hospital (MEETH) or even through his numerous publications. His book “Cosmetic Facial Surgery” co-authored with Donald Wood-Smith and published in 1973 “filled a gap” in literature and opposing all expectations the impact was rapid and led to three more editions in just seven years! In 1980 Dr Rees published a two volume updated version: “Aesthetic Plastic Surgery” which became the “bible” of aesthetic surgery for many years and helped a whole generation of plastic surgeons to better understand the steps of various procedures, improve their skills and perform as safe surgery as possible. As he had mentioned in the preface: “This book was written expressly for the younger surgeon with a solid background in plastic surgery, in order to serve as a reference” while he accumulates the experience required to season his judgment and surgical skills. “Experience is still

the best teacher in aesthetic surgery. If the older and more experienced surgeons find some pearls herein, I will be pleased. An effort was made throughout the book to identify problems and pitfalls at the precise point in the procedure at which they can occur, and to indicate both the prevention and the treatment thereof. “

Dr Rees along with Sir Archibald and Sir Michael Wood founded the “Flying Doctors” of East Africa in 1957. They “flew into the bush” to set up clinics in rural areas of East Africa in an effort to enable advanced medical care ranging from vaccinations to operating and treating local patients with congenital deformities and other conditions requiring extensive surgery and reconstruction. This organization evolved to AMREF (African Medical & Research Foundation), and is currently considered as Africa’s largest health development NGO.

Dr Rees’ adventures in Africa are chronicled in his fascinating book, “Daktari: A surgeon’s adventures

with flying doctors in Africa; incredible stories by an incredible human being.

Dr Rees served as President of ASAPS (American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery) in 1980 and as a director and vice-chairman of the American Board of Plastic Surgery.

Because of all his contributions in the field of plastic and aesthetic surgery in addition to his humanitarian labors he was honored with many awards throughout his career including the “Humanitarian Service Award” of the American Association of Plastic Surgeons (1996), the ASAPS “Distinguished Service Award” (1990) and “The Aesthetic Surgery Education and Research Foundation Career achievement” award (2010).

Prof. Hartrampf, would you kindly describe your educational and training background.

C.H.: I studied in North Fulton High School, in Emory University, in the University of Georgia and in the Medical College of Georgia. Between 1956 and 1957 I was a surgical intern in North Carolina Memorial Hospital. I was a Surgical Resident in the North Carolina University. In 1959-1960, I did Fellowship in Surgery of the Hand with E. E. Peacock, Jr., MD in the University of North Carolina.I was a chief Resident of General Surgery in the University of North Carolina and in 1961-1962 I was a Chief Resident on Plastic Surgery in Barnes Hospital of Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri.

Have you ever considered a different career?

C.H.: Yes

If yes, would you let us know your primary aspires and eventually what led you to your final decision?

C.H.: As a teenager I was committed to being a farmer. I raised and marketed chickens, eggs, pigs, cows and crops. I fell in love with an outstanding, brilliant and beautiful girl who turned me around and in college I turned to medicine.During that period I was married and in a big hurry. After two years of college, I got accepted into medical school. In my junior year I wanted to be a cardiologist and in my senior year I switched to thoracic and cardiac surgery. In my residency I was influenced by the dynamic Erle Peacock and spent a year with him in hand surgery. Then i became Chief Resident in general surgery under the great Nathan

Womack and made the decision to be a general surgeon. Next step in plastic surgery was as a resident at Barnes Hospital in St. Louis with Dr. James Barrett Brown and Louis Byars.Returning to practice in Atlanta, I announced that I was a general surgeon, a hand surgeon, and a reconstructive surgeon. Things were evolving slow for a time so I dropped the general surgery and concentrated on hand surgery and reconstructive surgery. Later I announced that I was a hand surgeon and a plastic surgeon. Then in 1980 I became a breast surgeon and enjoyed every day of the following twenty years until I became deaf.

Have you experienced any moments of desperation during your professional life?C.H.: No moments of desperation, but many anxious moments of changing from one specialty to the other. All of these decisions eventually turned out for the best outcome.Of course my time of complete deafness was stressful. I was separated from my family, my colleagues, my friends, and my patients. No verbal communication whatsoever. A cochlear implant by Dr. William House in California in 1993 saved my life. This was the early time of cochlear implant surgery and I was not sure it would work, but it did in a big way.

Any mistakes you could possibly avoid? C.H.: The only mistakes that I could possibly have avoided were going into business. I don’t think it is a good idea for physicians to occupy their time with business matters when they could spend more time thinking about medicine, their family, or wishes.

Prof. Carl HartrampfRetired Clinical Professor, Emory University, Atlanta

Page 14: IPRAS JOURNAL,15th ISSUE,JANUARY 2014

14 IPRAS Journal www.ipras.org Issue 15

Have you ever regretted for not pursuing something throughout your carrier?

C.H.: I don’ really have any serious regrets. I only wish that some of my creative ideas could have “come into life”.

So far, what were the highlights of your career?

C.H.: The highlight of my career would have to be my association with so many bright, young students of surgery. I count my time with teaching the residents at Emory University as significant and highly rewarding. My association with Professor M. J. Jurkiewitz was a rare privilege. My fellowship program was just wonderful. Many highly skilled young people came to work with me. We did good work I think. We came up with some new things that they found intellectually stimulating.

What are your goals for the upcoming years?

C.H.: For the next few years, I want to continue enjoy life with my family. I want to concentrate on working with my wonderful wife over the last sixty-one years, Pat. I would also like to continue to write. I also want to enjoy my farm and watch the wonders of nature unfold.

Would you encourage any family members to pursue the same career?

C.H.: I think medicine is a very satisfying and rewarding profession. It is drastically changing, but it can still be challenging and gratifying.

What advice would you give to our residents/upcoming plastic surgeons?

C.H.: As a plastic surgery resident you have chosen a time honored profession. Get all of the experience you

can and don’t be in a hurry—take your time. Be self-critical of your work and look for ways to improve. After much experience you can become more creative and innovative.Think about how in your new profession you can help mankind. Concentrate on such things as congenital anomalies, restoring cancer victims, repairing trauma defects and many other pressing problems of our profession. Think first of how you can serve your patients in the finest way and the rewards shall come.

What do you like to do in your free time; any hobbies/sports?

C.H.: Since retirement I have a lot of free time but not much energy. I enjoy thinking of new things and new ventures and I pursue them with limited success but with great joy. I enjoy watching all sports, especially football, though I still worry about injuries and lifelong disabilities.

What is you favorite book? Any song you prefer more than all the others?

My favorite books are mainly American and European histories. As far as a song is concerned, I used to enjoy the ballads, but my hearing defect has mostly eliminated that. I do enjoy seeing Pat appreciate her music and I am not sad about the situation. It is just a fact of life.

CONCLUSION:

We are very privileged to be plastic surgeons…take care of that privilege and add ‘luster’ to it. Our productive lives are deceptively short. So make the most of it.

Portraits by Henry Tonks depict the Excellency of Sir Harold Gillies work on soldiers mainly wounded by gunshots during the First World War. Henry Tonks was a successful surgeon who gave up his career to become an artist. It is a common belief that surgeons are already artists. Pain is associated to art. Every artist usually experience painful incidents that inspire them to create. Mr. Tonks said when he saw Gillies work “It is a chamber of horrors but I am quite content to draw them, as it is excellent practice”.Harold Gillies was born in 1882 in Dunedin, in New Zealand. Later he studied medicine at Gonville and Caius, in Cambridge University. His “stiff”

elbow, memorabilia from his childhood when he slide down the bannister in his home, never held him back from thriving in the university. When First World War broke out he joined the Royal Army Medical Corps. He was initially sent to Wimereux, a city near Boulogne and

he was a medical minder to Valadier, a French-American dentist who was not allowed to operate without supervision. However, Valadier was attempting to develop jaw repair work. Gillies got inspired by Valadier’s experiments with nascent skin graft techniques and decided to move in Paris to meet the renowned surgeon Hippolyte Morestin. A removal of a tumor Morestin made on a patient’s face and then cover it with jaw skin stimulated Gillies for his following achievements. He returned to England and managed to persuade the army’s chief surgeon Arbuthnot-Lane that facial injuries should be treated separately and all relative wards should be established at the Cambridge Military Hospital. As a result a new Hospital specializing in facial repairs was developed at Sidcup and named Queen’s Hospital. More than 11,000 operations were performed by Gillies and his colleagues on more than 5,000 men.World War soldiers His work was crucial as he developed the first skin grafting. Plastic surgeons might not be as advanced as it is without his significant import in Plastic Surgery. As recognition in 1930 he received a knighthood. First World War left devastation and millions of human lives losses. We pay our respects to the fallen and the widows, children and families left behind. We shall never forget.

Prof. Ferreira would you kindly describe your educational and training background?

L.F.: From 1977 to 1981 I was a resident and fellow in the Federal University of Sao Paulo (UNIFESP), on plastic Surgery. Then in 1982 until 1985 I did my PhD in the on plastic Surgery in the UNIFESP. Later in the University of San Francisco, California, I did my post PhD and last but not least since 1996 I was a Head full Professor in the Federal university of Sao Paulo, (UNIFESP).

Have you ever considered following a different career?

L.F.: The choice of medicine as a profession was not easy, since the 60s and also today, the Brazilian educational background did not prepare students to enter the profession that best suited their features, trends and vocations. Thus, at that stage of chosing a career, which I believe is crucial to our happiness, I looked for professional career guidance.

The result was surprising and exciting as the options were: Teacher and Medicine. At the time, my interpretation was questioning how such different professions could be possible? I had to choose between the two professions, since that time, the paths were different: doing at the time called “Normal” (if we wanted to be a teacher) or “Scientific” (for other professions) which today corresponds to the “Secondary School”. I opted for the “Scientific” because my first choice was Medicine. Many years later, I became a Plastic Surgeon and Professor, and I realized that vocational guidance was consistent and correct, because, then, the two professions were compatible and able to be shared.

If yes, would you let us know your primary aspires and eventually what led you to your final decision?

L.F.: During the period of Undergraduate Medicine, I was an intern in the Service of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Vascular Surgery and Traumatology

Prof. Lydia Masako FerreiraChair and Full Professor of plastic Surgery Division, Surgery department

of Federal University of Sao paulo / paulista Medicine School (UNIFESp/EpM)

and Orthopaedics in the hospital that belonged to my uncles. These stages were conducted on weekends and holidays, although I liked a lot of Psychiatry as a specialty, but this specialty was little known at that time. This voluntary practice as an intern was essential for choosing my specialty. Between the 4th and 5th year of medical school, I interned with a specialist in hand surgery who had just arrived from his fellowship abroad. This incident influenced me to choose my specialty. He was methodical and rigorous during surgery and he commented: “You have great surgical skill and should do specialization in Plastic Surgery”. Until then, I knew I would perform a surgical specialty but had not thought of Plastic Surgery. At that moment, this comment has profoundly marked the choice of Plastic Surgery as my specialty. Perhaps it determined my choice.

Have you experienced any moments of desperation during your professional life?

L.F.: As a woman in the field of medicine, in the 70s, I was a minority in medical schools. In the area of surgery then, to be a surgeon was even much rarer. But I learned which were the challenges and difficulties which progressively temper the character and destiny of a person. Thus, since early on, I got used to challenges. And, after winning Plastic Surgery Education Award (it was the first time a Latin American had won this award) I decided to stay one year abroad doing a postdoc at the San Francisco University in California, away from my husband and children. It was a desperate year.

Upon returning from the United States, I faced the biggest challenge of my academic life, the competition for the Free-Teaching in 1994 and the tender for Full Professor of the Department of Surgery at UNIFESP Plastic Surgery in 1996.

Certainly, being the first female Professor after an open competition on a surgical specialty in Latin America was a huge responsibility, especially because I was very young (age 44). Attending meetings of the Board on the Department of Surgery whose members were exclusively male was a very complex task. It seemed that everyone and everything

conspired against me. But today I thank all these obstacles and all the lions I had to fight, because it was through this confrontation that I gained the respect from all of the university.

Eight years after, in 2004, I was elected Coordinator and then Deputy National Coordinator of Medicine III-Capes, federal agency of the Ministry of Education and Culture, based in Brasilia. During these eight years (2008-2014) I had the privilege of dealing with overwhelming odds and with so many experiences along the most recognized and renowned researchers in all areas of professional activity in the country (2008-2014).

In 2008, I also became the Chair of the Department of Surgery, UNIFESP / EPM, whose challenge was far beyond of plastic surgery specialty because in the entire history of UNIFESP / Paulista School of Medicine, since 1933, it has never happened before: a woman had never served this position.

These challenges which I have faced in the University and Ministry of Education and Culture where I have been working, showed the importance of acting in a responsive, fair, impartial and firm manner, but, with respect, ethics and fairness.

I learned that “the path is made as you walk” and we carried out “the best” in our daily activities and that defined me. Obstacles continued to exist and are even more difficult. However, these obstacles made me grow as a person.

Any mistakes you could possibly avoid?

L.F.: Of course, I must have made a lot of mistakes, especially those that occur by the agility we have to act in various professional and personal levels. I have learned that the most important thing in life is not the time we spend but the commitment and quality of this dedication. In several cases, I would have kept quiet against aggressions resulting of emotional abuse and personal turmoil of some people we i met through my career, because these eventually serve to exercise our spiritual growth.

Have you ever regretted for not pursuing something throughout your carrier?

Page 18: IPRAS JOURNAL,15th ISSUE,JANUARY 2014

18 IPRAS Journal www.ipras.org Issue 15

L.F.: When we act doing what we like, trying to do the best with total involvement, we hardly regret not having done something.

So far, what were the highlights of your career?

L.F.: The post doctoral performed in 1994 at the San Francisco University, in California, USA, was certainly the kickoff of my entire academic career. This milestone was only possible after having won the Scholarship Award - Plastic Surgery Education Foundation in 1992 and 1993, that helped understand the research line «Composite Tissue in Allotransplantation”.A year after my Free Full Professor (1995), the professor of the Department of Plastic Surgery, UNIFESP / EPM had his mandatory retirement. I was invited and voted unanimously to be the “Director of Division”. In 1996 there was a contest for Professor. I ran with another candidate and was approved as a Professor at the Department of Plastic Surgery, UNIFESP / EPM.Being Head and Full Professor was another milestone in my life since it changed my routine and my expectations. I started with 3 teachers and 2 residents working in the division in a single hospital and we currently have 10 professors, 15 affiliated professors, 20 physicians employed, 24 residents (8 per year), 32 Masters and PhD students and 100 students in the Course of Improvement , working in 7 hospitals, at Burns Treatment Unit, at the House of Plastic, in 2 Transactional Surgery Laboratories (Cell Culture, Stem Cell and Gene Expression), in the Graduate Program in Translational Surgery (note 6 CAPES) and Improvement Course.Alongside I was contemplated as CNPq Researcher and it was the first plastic surgeon to rise to that position in concurred researchers evaluation (based on scientific production, human resources training and fundraising). CNPq is the largest development federal agency in the country (corresponds to the NIH in the USA). The researchers are evaluated every threee years to maintain this position. Then the biggest challenge of our specialty was to be recognized as a group of leading international scientific competitiveness. In 1996, when I assumed

as Head and Full Professor of Plastic Surgery, at one of the most prestigious institutions in Brazil, I noticed that the Plastic Surgery Graduate Program (PSGP) in the UNIFESP/ EPM would be closed because of low rank rating. I requested a period for overhaul it, explaining that the program was the only specialty in the country in training teachers, masters and doctors in the area. Two years later, I had improved the program rank rating to Very Good degree (grade 5 CAPES) and I was already accepted as Consultant of CAPES, the federal agency responsible for Graduate Programs in the country and their evaluation. In the next three years, Graduate Programm of Plastic Surgery at UNIFESP obtained the International concept (grade 6 CAPES) keeping this classification to the present day. On that triennium, only two Graduate Programs of all surgical areas in Brazil were considered competitive International (Ophthalmology and Plastic Surgery, UNIFESP).At that time I was appointed as National Coordinator of Medicine III-Capes by the Ministry of Education and Culture in Brasilia. I have had to deal with all the Research on surgery in Brazil (2008-2014).In 2008 I also assumed the Head of the Department of Surgery, UNIFESP / EPM. In this period of management, the General Surgery Residency showed significant growth in all operating areas. The following year (2009) a dream became reality. I got to create the Burns Treatment Unit (UTQ) at UNIFESP/EPM with exclusive funding of private companies.Simultaneously I was honored to receive the title of Honorary Degree from UNIVAS (Universidade do Vale do Sapucai) in southern Minas Gerais, in 2009, and from the Universidad Simón Bolivar in Barranquilla, Colombia, in 2012.Three years later, I was blessed with the greatest gift that a professional can be honored. The ex students created the Association of Ex Students of Professor Lydia Masako Ferreira - AEXLY (Scientiam Alumni Association) on May 31, 2012. The association’s mission is to open a larger horizon of Science and Friendship). If being CNPq Researcher 1B was already proud for

Page 19: IPRAS JOURNAL,15th ISSUE,JANUARY 2014

Issue 15 www.ipras.org IPRAS Journal 19

my institution and for my specialty of plastic surgery, being formalized as CNPq 1A (maximum rating of the Researcher in the country), was for me a great joy. Greatest joy is to demonstrate to all including our younger generations that silent work, seriously facing the community and society will eventually bring something very sublime to us. It is Worth! (“All is worth it when soul is not small “).

What are your goals for the next few years?

L.F.: When the Graduate Program of Plastic Surgery, UNIFESP got the rating “6” of CAPES (compared to International Graduate Program) in the triennium 2007, 2010 and 2013, the structure had already multi-, inter and transdisciplinarity of action. This structure was created in 1998. The evolution of this multi and interdisciplinarity and the focus on consolidated research lines and on patient-centered research led to changing the name of the Graduate Program for Translational Surgery. Translational Surgery is based on focus on disease / trauma of the surgical patient and gets the answer on the bench.

Would you encourage any family members to pursue the same career?

L.F.: As a Japanese descendant, I have learned that actions speak louder than words. I believe that the activities I have done associated with harmonic and peaceful coexistence with the majority of our peers strongly demonstrate my encouragement to my professional, academic and research career.

What advice would you give to our residents/upcoming plastic surgeons?

L.F.: When we do what we love, as Paulo Coelho says, “The universe conspires in our favor.” Thus, guided by the heart with responsibility has always been the choice that has resulted accurate.

Following the example of hard work and respect for others, men will certainly be of value in every way.

How do you enjoy spending your free time? Do you have any hobbies/sports?

L.F.: Throughout my professional and academic career, I had my personal dreams fulfilled (I was privileged to marry the love of my life, also have wonderful children -a psychiatrist who is finishing his doctorate in Toronto, Canada and another who is an administrator at Abril Business- and also honest and affectionate friends whom I have hold dearly beside me in life).About 30 years ago, I was interviewed by a medical journal. The theme of the interview was “the success of professional academic of two female surgeons from the two largest and most prestigious institutions of São Paulo”. And I replied that my successful professional life was a result of the emotional stability that my family life and my children conveyed to me. Unlike the other female surgeon placed her option to not have children as the cause for success in her professional life. Up to this day I haven’t forgotten the contrast between the answers, and how much I daily appreciate the existence of my children, not only for my professional success, but mainly for the better person that I have become through learning from them. I am convinced that even with all the knowledge gained from them, I’m still on the road for learning and there is still a long way to go…As a result, the priority of my free time is to be with my children, friends and then the books and movies that I like to read and watch.

What is your favorite book? Do you have any beloved song?

LF. My dream was to study violin but the conservatory nearby my neighborhood offered only Piano and Singing lessons. I chose Piano and graduated at 16 years old. I did another year of virtuosity to complete the training, which was very important to me. Although the violin was not my fellow during adolescence, the piano gave me the opportunity to perceive sensitivity of people around me. So, my favorite songs were and still are any classical music. Also, since adolescence, I enjoy reading about psychology and suspense and any subject related to mind perception.

r I S I N g S T A r

Dr. Palmos, would you kindly describe your educational and training background.

P.P.: I have finished my elementary and high school studies at a small town near Athens called Chalkis and then graduated from the Medical School of the University of Athens. My residency training was for two tears on general Surgery at the 1st IKA hospital in Athens and then for two years on Plastic Surgery at “Giorgos Gennimatas” cancer Hospital of Athens, under the supervision of Prof. A. Yiacoumettis.I finished up my training, after studying for two more years at Withington University Hospital, Manchester, UKComing back to Greece I completed my PhD thesis at the University of Athens.

Have you ever considered a different career?

P.P.: Although our family had nothing to do with Medicine my brother and I both decided to study Medicine. I think I was influenced by my older brother, but from the age of 13-14 I knew that I wanted to become a doctor.

dr. petros palmosdirector of plastic Surgery department

at the “Agioi Anargiri” hospital

Near the end of my Medical studies my instinct decision was to follow a surgical speciality and the first time I saw a Plastic Surgeon on duty, I knew exactly what I wanted to do for the rest of my life.

Have you experienced any moments of desperation during your professional life?

P.P.: desperation no. though experiencing many difficulties in several occasions, with hard work and help of people near me who loved me and helped me a lot, I overcame all the difficulties and managed to move on.

Any mistakes you could possibly avoid?

P.P.: who has not made any mistakes?Remembering the past always gives you a way to avoid the mistakes you have made. Thanks God my mistakes were minor and did not influence my career

Have you ever regretted for not pursuing something throughout your carrier?

P.P.: sometimes I think I could had pursued an academic career

Page 22: IPRAS JOURNAL,15th ISSUE,JANUARY 2014

22 IPRAS Journal www.ipras.org Issue 15

So far, what were the highlights of your career?

P.P.: when you are a surgeon and you deal with patients the most important thing in your career is the satisfied patient. I have contributed in several big scientific events and participated in several major surgical procedures but I will always consider as the highlight of my career the relations with my patients and the smile on their faces.

Would you encourage any family members to pursue the same career?

P.P.: my children are very young but it would make me really happy and I would encourage them to follow the same career. I believe it is a rewarding career.

What advice would you give to our residents/upcoming plastic surgeons?

P.P.: to work hard, to travel around to see as many surgeons as possible, there is always something to get from everybody and something that is very difficult to learn: to find their own personal way to communicate with their patients and understand what they really wantWhat do you like to do in your free time; any hobbies/sports?P.P.: although free time is limited due to the fact that beside my career I also have two children 8 and 5 years old who need a lot of their father’s time, so I always manage to find some time to play tennis as a body exercise and bridge as a mind exercise.

What is you favorite book? Any song you prefer more?

As we grow up our taste changes. When younger my favorite writer was John Steinbeck, now reading books, outside medical, is a luxury and I mainly read Greek writers.I like music very much! I hear music everywhere from the car to the OR!With no hesitation I would say that my favorite singer is Freddie Mercury of the Queen and “Bohemian Rhapsody” my favorite song.

Conclusion:

Before finishing this interview I would like to take this opportunity to thank some people who helped me to become who I am.First of all I would like to thank my wife for the two wonderful children and for her support throughout every step. Her presence makes my life worth livingMy colleges at the Plastic Surgery Department at the “Agioi Anargiri” Hospital for their everyday helpOur President Prof. Eisenmann-Klein and the General Secretary Dr. Nelson Piccolo, for their trust in several occations and for this interviewLast but not least i would like to thank Prof. A. Yiacoumettis. Most of what I have become today is due to him. He taught me not only Plastic Surgery but also how to be a good person. I was very lucky to meet this exceptional man 25 year ago and blessed to be able to consider him as a friend.

The Team

The Mumbai surgical team was conformed basically by Marita Eisenmann-Klein (President of the IPRAS and founder of the Women for Women program) and myself, Francisca Alvarez (Plastic Surgeon originally from Colombia and actually living in Munich). The other members of the Indian mission took part in some of the activities, held in Mumbai, and then went off to other locations, since IPRAS “WomenforWomen” this time had 3 teams working

h U M A N I T A r I A N w O r k

The Location:The Mumbay mission took place in the Grant Medical College Sir Jamsetijee Jeejebhoy Group of Hospitals , best known as “JJ Hospital”, and in Bombay Hospital.Established in 1845 “JJ Hospital” is the oldest medical institution in Western India. Run by Government of Maharashtra, it provides undergraduate and postgraduate medical training and health care for people who are below poverty line. It is by far the largest referral Hospital of the State. The Department of Plastic Surgery is located inside the campus at Balaram building. The head of the department is Professor Dr. Ashok Shah and his team includes 7 Consultants and 10 Post Graduate Students. The department has 2 operating rooms, outpatient clinic and 2 big wards. The Bombay Hospital is a well-structured charity Hospital and the “head” of the Plastic Surgery Department is Prof. Ashok Gupta (President of the Indian Association of Plastic Society) , surrounded by a team of dedicated and competent administrators and residents. The operating theatres are perfectly organized and supervised by the internationally experienced, extremely competent, warm-hearted and yet energetic Director of Nursing Staff Veronica. She welcomed us in the Bombay Hospital family, cared for all of us, including Christopher, our photographer, throughout our stay and it would never have come to our mind not to obey her instructions, since her advices were most valuable.

simultaneously in India. Their initial support was very valuable: Debra Ann Reilly (President and Founding member of the IPRAS Women for Women program, Director of a burn unit in Omaha, Nebraska), Dr. Constance Neuhann-Lorenz (Former President of the IPRAS Women for Women program), Dr. Outi Kaarela (Plastic Surgeon from Finland), Dr. Bernadett Lévay (Plastic Surgeon from Hungary), Dr. Christine

Kufner (Anesthesiologist from Germany) and the German photographer Christopher Thomas. We were fortuned to count on an incredible group at “JJ Hospital” and there are no words to thank for their hospitality, their continuous assistance and care. The leader of the local team at “JJ Hospital” was Assistant Professor Dr. Rajat Kapoor and the group consisted

of 10 post graduate students, 4 anesthesiologist , 4 scrub nurses and the members of the house staff of the ORs and wards, - all of them not only extremely competent, but also friendly and supportive.

The Experience:

We conducted more than 30 major procedures, all secondary corrections on women with major functional impairment from burn injuries. When the Mumbai Mirror featured us in a report about the IPRAS “WomenforWomen” mission, we experienced overwhelming public attention and recognition: when we left our hotel rooms in the morning, the whole housekeeping staff was waiting outside to congratulate and thank us. The taxi drivers expressed their feelings of gratitude and honor when we approached them. Upon arrival they refused to accept payment from us: “We do not take money from people who came to India to do such great operations here and support our society. Call us whenever you need transportation, it will be our honor to offer our service free of charge for you, wherever you wish to go”.

Indian Plastic Surgeons to help acid burn victims

Dr. Ashok Gupta, India & C.T.K.Khoo, UK

It is estimated that there are up to one thousand acid attacks on women each year in India. The perpetrators are usually male, and intentionally throw acid to maim or disfigure, causing grievous hurt. Attacks are motivated by jealousy or hatred, often as a result of anger following broken love affairs, unfaithfulness or rejection. In 2013, an amendment was introduced to the Indian Penal Code through the Criminal Law (Amendment) Act, introducing a penalty of imprisonment up to ten years, and the supreme court has directed that victims should be paid compensation of at least INR 3 million (US$5,000) for permanent disability

Victim of acid burn. Photo from a mission of IPRAS-WomenforWomen

There is a new awareness of the needs of victims: Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons in Institutions across the country are being recruited to provide immediate treatment, followed by a continuing programme of reconstructive surgery to correct deformity. It is also proposed that trained Trauma Teams will provide urgent psychological help.

pAprAS Philippine Association of plastic, Reconstructive

and Aesthetic Surgeons, Inc.Jesus g. lizardo, Md

During the 1950’s, there were only two surgeons who practiced plastic surgery in Manila, Drs. Benvenuto R. Diño and Jaime E. Laico. The true consciousness of the specialty among the surgical cognoscenti became further defined after returning to the country of trained plastic surgeons from the USA, continental Europe and England, anxious to

share their specialized education with their younger aspiring colleagues. Through the inspired leadership of Dr. Diño, a miniscule group of plastic surgeons was assembled to form an association that would strengthen interpersonal bond and promote better patterns of plastic surgery practice. On March 22, 1961, the Philippine Association of Plastic Surgeons (PAPS), was established by 8 founding members conducted by Dr. Diño in the UP-PGH Medical Center, namely Drs. Jaime E. Laico, Ponciano D. Manalo,

Jesus G. Lizardo, Clemente O. Sta. Romana, Angel G. Agbulos, Teodoro J. Luna and Asterio Belmonte. Dr. Diño, who served the Philippine Army, finished medicine in 1933 at UP, completed a residency training in general surgery at the Philippine General Hospital in 1940, was selected to accompany Pres. Manuel L. Quezon who was exiled to Washington DC through Australia on May 8, 1942, about 6 months after the outbreak of World War II. He was promoted to the rank of Lt. Colonel in Ashville, North Carolina in 1944, and then to full Colonel, AFP in 1957, and trained in plastic surgery at the Columbia-Presbyterian Hospital and Vanderbilt Clinic in New York City, where he met the famous American plastic surgeon Dr. Jerome P. Webster, author of a monumental book about Gaspare Tagliacozzi, an Italian surgeon from Bologna respected and considered to be the “father” of plastic surgery.The Association’s officers were simultaneously elected, took their oaths of office, and the first, earliest primal representatives inducted were Drs. Benvenuto R. Diño, president; Ponciano D. Manalo, vice-president; Clemente O. Sta. Romana, secretary;

Angel G. Agbulos, treasurer; and Jesus G. Lizardo, editor. Members of the Board of Directors were Drs. Jaime E. Laico, Teodoro J. Luna and Astrio Belmonte. Forthwith, Dr. Lizardo designed the seal of the new organization.Following a disability in movement and speech complicating a stroke, Dr. Diño, despite his infirmity, continued to be occupied in teaching and meticulous in being chief of the Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Section, in the UP-PGH Medical Center and academic lecturer as well in the UST Faculty of Medicine and Surgery and the FEU Institute of Medicine. He facilitated and furnished the access and appetite for the Section to further expand skills and maintain continuous bringing up to code of information regarding what was new at the time with plastic surgery in other region of the globe. There were regular clinical conferences held in hospitals where members of the PAPS carried staff appointments. These meetings turned out to be the principal focus of learning and teaching, where members were free to play the dual role of enlightening on one hand and teaching on the other hand colleagues about their experiences and clinical adventures.Dr. Luna, who was in the FEU Hospital presented unusual cases while Dr. Belmonte reported reconstructive problems among military trauma patients in the V. Luna General Hospital (now AFP Medical Center). Drs. Manalo and Sta. Romana discussed the considerable variety of inconceivable cases in the UP-PGH Medical Center while Dr. Agbulos, the solo surgeon based in the UST Hospital, showed his colleagues how he solved his plastic surgery problems there. Dr. Lizardo demonstrated his patients at St. Luke’s and National Orthopedic Hospital (now Philippine Orthopedic Center) and essayed how he controlled terrible wound infections with the simplest, cheapest local formula for cleaning wounds before reconstructive work. This type of interchange of particulars especially from members with heterogeneous exposures in the US, England, continental Europe, and neighboring Asian countries proved to be very profitable and educational for every element of the Association. In 1971, the meager number of PAPS members was increased by the favorable acceptance of Dr. Teresita L. Tongson, connected with UERMMMC and Lourdes Hospital; Dr. Ernesto Espaldon, (later elected senator in Guam) who seasonably served and helped the Tausogs of Mindanao between breaks in his private practice; Dr. George Dy, who practiced

in Chinatown; Dr. Glicerio Bustamante, chief of the Rizal Provincial Hospital (now Rizal Medical Center) and Dr. Amado J. Piamonte who practiced cosmetic surgery in Makati Medical Center. The PAPS had, by the, one dozen fellows. In one of its meetings in FEU, Drs. Dino and Laico realized that in 10 years of the life of the PAPS, there should be some guidelines to certify members who have undergone training in local centers, as specialists, completing acceptable programs, particularly in the government hospitals which have a good variety of plastic and reconstructive problems and with a consultant who was a member of the PAPS. The Philippine Board of Plastic Surgery was created, and by April 21, 1971, it was officially registered with Dr. Glicerio M. Bustamante as its first chairman and Dr. Clemente O. Sta. Romana as its secretary. The By-Laws were ratified by the Association on May 3, 1971 and included with the Articles of Incorporation with SEC. The members of the first Board of Plastic Surgery included Drs. Benvenuto R. Diño. Jesus G. Lizardo, Jaime E. Laico, Teodoro J. Luna, Ponciano D. Manalo, Asterio Belmonte, Angel G. Agbulos, Amado Piamonte, and a new inductee Marcelino Reysio-Cruz. The role and goals of the Board were drawn up toward the direction of elevating and maintaining the standards of teaching and practicing plastic surgery by fostering adequate educational facilities and strict clinical training; of establishing standards of competence in designating specialists in the practice of plastic surgery; of building an appropriate and effectual residency training program in plastic surgery; of conducting written and practical examinations to determine the preparedness and intelligence of applicants, and to award certificates to those candidates who pass the demands and stipulations of the Board.Since it became apparent that there was quite a pervading need to increase membership because of the growing shortfall in the administrative guidelines, the PAPS began to open the door to Associate Members like Drs. Burgos Sayoc and Rosauro Cabailo, Dr. Corazon C. Buenviaje was inducted Fellow in 1973. By 1974, the above Associate Members were raised to Fellows and joined the team of new Fellow inductees composed of Drs. Gil Fernandez, Socorro Busuego-Velasco, Pedro Enriquez, and Jorge B. Neri, Jr. In that same year, there was likewise a sister organization formed, called the Philippine Association of Plastic Surgeons in America led by Dr. Basilio Bautista based in Houston, Texas, with arrangements for a

Issue 15 www.ipras.org IPRAS Journal 37

corresponding relationship with the PAPS.There was a transitory relief in the total number of PAPS membership in the next few years, but the unfortunate demise of Drs. Belmonte in 1972, Diño in 1973, and Sayoc in 1976, including the illness of Dr. Laico and his subsequent retirement, deflated the number of Fellows to 16.But the mission and vision of the PAPS remained deep-dyed, indelible, and safe in the hearts and minds of its surviving members. In 1978, Dr. Melanio Cruz became an Associate Member, while Dr. Jesusito Zubiri was installed Fellow in 1979.In order to improve the training program contrived for its younger trainees, the PAPS designed the formation of an association to stretch the latitude of exposure to a more adequate number of clinical material and experience. Consortium 1 was conceived and materialized through the undertakings of Drs. Glicerio Bustamante and Jesus G. Lizardo. In 1981, its participating hospitals were the Makati Medical Center, Rizal Medical Center, UERMMMC and Veterans Memorial Medical Center. Each had one Fellow rotating through those hospitals for a period of 3 years.Meanwhile, the UP-PGH Medical Center had its own training program as well as the UST Hospital. In 1985, another society was formed by the members of the PAPS to signify that it was the duly constituted group approved by the Philippine College of Surgeons, the umbrella establishment of all the cutting specialties. Named the Philippine Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, it became the correctly certified, accepted and endorsed association, throwing into the shade other unattested bands of similar cosmetic activities. In 1998, the Board of Directors of PAPS combined the two associations by absorbing the latter. Thus, the PAPS became the Philippine Association of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetics Surgeons, Inc. (PAPRAS). The subsequent years allowed the acceptance of more and more qualified fellows, steadily increasing the Association’s population. With the unceasing longing of residents who have completed their GS training to further educate themselves in plastic surgery; Consortium 2 was further sorted out in 1995 with St. Luke’s Medical Center, St. Martin de Porres Hospital and FEU Hospital as its satellites. In 2001, the St. Martin de Porres Hospital concluded its section of plastic surgery, putting an end to its inclusion in Consortium 2. Almost immediately, the problem was solved with its replacement by the Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital and the Jose Reyes Medical Center.

At present, there are 8 Fellows under training in Consortium I and II, 6 Fellows in the UP-PGH Medical Center, and 1 Fellow in the UST Hospital – a grand total of 15 Fellows in training in 2003.The PAPRAS in 2003 has a total of 53 members of good standing. Since its birth 32 years ago, it has been led by 15 pioneers and mature persons who have been trustworthy and sublimely devoted to their duties, and have faced perplexing problems of many colors with remarkable comprehension and judgement. The list of illustrious presidents follows: Dr. Benvenuto R. Diño, 1961-1973; Dr. Ponciano D. Manalo, 1974-1975; Dr. Angel G. Agbulos, 1976-1977; Dr. Teodoro J. Luna, 1978-1979; Dr. Jesus G. Lizardo, 1980-1981; Dr. Teresita L. Tongson, 1982-1983; Dr. Glicerio M. Bustamante, 198401985; Dr. Gil C. Fernandez, 1986-1989; Dr. Ponciano D. Manalo, 1990-1991; Dr. Rosauro D. Cabailo, 1992-1993; Dr. Oscar V.A. Tagulinao, 1998-1999; Dr. Conrado G. de Gracia, 2000-2001 and Dr. Florencio Q. Lucero, 2002-2004,In 1985, an Asian-Pacific Convention was successfully held in Manila during the “tenure” of Dr. Bustamante.A new deal for PAPRAS has been sealed by Dr. Lucero and will be officially used in all PAPRAS communications, and in calling cards, letterheads and envelopes of the members. He is presently PAPRAS president, a position he has, at long last assumed by unanimous choice, and head of the division of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery in the UP-PGH Medical Center by his own achievement and professionalism. He has travelled substantially and has promoted closer friendship with plastic surgery societies in the Eastern and Western areas of the world. As early as 1983, during Dr. Tongson’s presidential term, he has been helping the Associations by representing it in several overseas congresses, so that now, his obsession during his incumbency is to have PAPRAS host the coming 12th ASEAN Congress here in the Philippines in 2004. What is historically meaningful however, is Dr. Lucero’s well-built potency regarding connections in various congresses, and with particular celebrities in plastic surgery practicing in the US, Asia, England and continental Europe, and can request them to grace our meetings without much ritual tributes, beating of drums, or flattering cadenzas. While some arcane sources perceive that Dr. Lucero is being furtively underestimated by his workmates for some ingrained biased “slants”, many staunchly believe he is one of the notable torchbearers PAPRAS ever had. He is a sincere worker, and his loyalty to PAPRAS and his visions of its fine-tuning and improvement are unconditional, eager and victoriously idealistic.

The ball of the Austrian Medical Doctors, held at the Hofburg

Dr. Walther Jungwirth M.D., President Austrian Society for Plastic Aesthetic & Reconstructive Surgery with his wife.

On behalf of the Austrian Society of Plastic, Aesthetic and Reconstructive Surgery, I want to express my warmest welcome to all colleagues coming to our beautiful country for the 18th IPRAS World Congress in 2015. I want to congratulate the organizing committee of IPRAS for having chosen the most beautiful, historical and significant meeting point in the center of Vienna: “The Hofburg”. Habsburg emperors started to build the “Hofburg” or Court-Castle in 1279 (!). Since then it was established as their residency.

Every January the ball of the Austrian Medical Doctors is held at the Hofburg. I attended the event yesterday and share with you pictures of this wonderful place. This should persuade you even more to join the next IPRAS world Congress 2015.

Yours Sincerely
