President’s Report 2018

Well, what a year! My first as President was certainly an eye opener. One does not appreciate the work involved and it put me in awe of the previous presidents in what they achieved. Many thanks must go to all the people who did so much for me and the association during the season.

This year, there were numerous successes both on and off the field that highlighted the season. These will be acknowledged in various reports to be tabled tonight. Some of the highlights are:

• The men’s R2 grade finally made it! Thanks to all the clubs that made this happen.

• Our Indoor Hockey under the guidance of Jan Walker goes from strength to strength and is steadily outgrowing its current venue at Redbank. Well done Jan!

• Successful hosting of the Under 18 Men’s Championships; a great team effort.

• Our Complex Development Committee has been busy. Some of the completed projects are the new toilet in the Tridan Shed, new storeroom for the RCD and training equipment and new first aid room. Projects still in progress are the renovation of the Tridan Shed, fence around the water tank and pump shed, renovating of the kitchen and the connection of the toilet block to service the grass fields.

Congratulations go to all the umpires who achieved upgrades and those who were selected to umpire various stare championship finals and to those who participated at national level.

To all the Ipswich supporters who answered the call to tech at various state championships, thank you! You put Ipswich Hockey’s name forward at the expense of missing out on seeing your children play.

The contribution made by the dedicated people of this association has made this season so successful. Without you people this association would struggle throughout the year – the Vets bbq team, our gala team, the grounds committee, our umpires and the tech officials who were so generous in giving time to Ipswich Hockey.

On a sad note is the departing of our RCD, Sam Spry, who after being with us for 4 years has decided to leave us. I have only worked with her for the past season and know how reliant we were on Sam. The work involved and the unclaimed hours Sam put in to improve Ipswich Hockey and players alike has set a bench mark for future RCDs which will be a very hard act to follow. Thank you, Sam, for all the work you did while you were with us. We wish you all the best in the future.

In finishing my report, I would like to thank the following for their efforts during the year:

• Mark Eleison and his team at the Umpires Committee

• Leanne Haley and her team from the Technical side of hockey

• Andrea Welsh and the RAP Team

Page 8: IPSWICH HOCKEY ASSOCIATION Inc - revolutioniseSPORT · 2020-01-17 · water tank and pump shed, renovating of the kitchen and the connection of the toilet block to service the grass

• Pat Jordan and his team on the Grounds Committee

• Denis Tierney – a tireless worker

• Karen Dolan who is never too busy to lend a hand where needed

• Kerri Orr who was everywhere

• Natalie Jordan who filled in where needed with no complaints

• Emily Jaenke who took on the role of coordinating the duty roster; no easy task

And lastly to my Executive:

• Tracey Doyle who handled the difficult position of clubhouse and bar and canteen

• Pauline Alchin – I could not ask for a better deputy

• Aimee McDermott – Jack of all trades; master of them all

• Paul Mantell – gave me good advice throughout the year

• Margret Mantell – who made my life so much easier

So in closing this president’s report, I hope everyone had a great Christmas and is refreshed to begin 2019.

Senior Vice-President’s Report 2018 Season

The 2018 hockey season started with four new people taking on roles on the Ipswich Hockey Association Executive. Robert as President, Patrick as Vice President Grounds, Aimee as Vice President Media and Sponsorship and myself as Senior Vice President. With all of us having completed our training sessions and instruction sheets in hand, we all hit the road running.

Part of my role as Senior Vice President was the Judiciary Committee, of which the first task was updating the Judiciary Guidelines. After forming a committee and reviewing many other centre’s Judiciary rules as well as Hockey Qld, the committee was able to successfully update the guidelines for the 2018 season. The completion of this process is to update the Yellow/Red Card reports forms which are submitted by the umpires. It is hoped these forms will be completed for the start of the 2019 season.

The Umpires Committee also worked with the Judiciary Committee and they are implementing instructions for umpires on how to write their reports for Yellow/Red cards issued. These instructions will hopefully assist the Judiciary Committee with more detailed reports when required for Judiciary hearings.

Thank you to all the Judiciary members who stepped up when called upon and made my job a lot easier. Special thanks to Heather and Denis, for their advice and guidance given their years of experience. This guidance was valued, especially being my first year in this role.

Another role I was involved with was the Technical Committee. This Committee receives many, many requests from clubs over the season, as well as completing the season draw, updating the database and keeping the online results up to date for all members. The number of hours that these few people put in is incredible. The members of the Ipswich Hockey community need to remember these Committee members are volunteers and to be patient while waiting for the season draw, online results updates and of course replies for requests forwarded by Clubs.

There was the ongoing issue of the toilet block, of which Ipswich Hockey was able to receive assistance from our local Federal member Jennifer Howard. This support allowed Ipswich Hockey to receive assistance from the government. Hopefully the toilet block will be up and running for the 2019 season.

The new bike track was completed and was appreciated by all cycle enthusiasts, but there was the issue with the car park and amenities. After many calls and negotiations these issues were resolved. Tracey, the Clubhouse VP did a great job in implementing a new cash register system in the canteen and bar which proved a hit to all the workers. Tracey has many more great ideas to update the kitchen which hopefully will be done in the not too distance future. Well done Tracey.

In the 2018 season, we also had the passing of a tireless worker not only for Ipswich Hockey but also within Collegians Hockey Club, Lorraine Lobegeiger.

On another sad note the Association’s RCD Sam Spry resigned at the end of the season. Sam was the face of Ipswich Hockey who went over and beyond her role in helping the Association and many players achieve their goals throughout her three years in the position. I would like to wish Sam all the very best for her future and where her new adventure takes her.

Many thanks to all who assisted me in my first year in the role of Senior VP, it was much appreciated.

Lastly, thank you for electing me for the 2018 season and I hope I have done my job to your satisfaction. Pauline Alchin

Secretary’s Report 2018 What was I thinking? Having identified at the end of 2017 that the time was right for change at Ipswich Hockey, I made the decision not to renominate for the President’s position. But wanting to assist in the transition, I took on the Secretary’s role. This was one role I had always said I would never do as I have no ‘secretarial’ training/skills and am a technology dinosaur. Hence the learning curve around minutes/agendas/correspondence etc. did, at times, prove a challenge. But, as is said:

‘If it doesn’t challenge you, it won’t change you’.

As has been mentioned in previous reports, change was certainly our theme of our 2018 season. Not only were there the changes in Executive positions and the make of the Umpires Committee, there were many others who were part of the change and who made the running of things, especially weekend fixtures, much easier.

After being at the helm of the RAP Team from day 1, Karen Dolan handed the reins to Andrea Welsh who had put up her hand to be Coordinator of the Team. Andy had HUGE shoes to fill but, with Karen’s guidance and continued support of and involvement with the team, did just that. The impact of Karen’s invaluable work for Ipswich Hockey cannot be underestimated and we thank Karen most sincerely for all her hard work.

The weekend On-Duty roster undertaken by the Executive is a huge commitment, especially with the responsibilities when ‘on-duty’ often requiring two people for each shift and the many hours of fixtures to be covered across the weekend. This burden was certainly lightened for the members of the Executive thanks to Natalie Jordan, Emily Jaenke, Jan Walker & Leanne Haley who volunteered to be included on the roster. Their contribution was certainly appreciated by the Executive members and to them we offer our sincere thanks.

On a personal note, I want to offer my heartfelt thanks to Natalie Jordan. As if Nat’s plate was not already full, as well as offering to be included on the on-duty roster, Nat also volunteered to be the Uniform Coordinator. This can be a very time-consuming job ensuring all our rep teams have their uniforms when needed but, as Nat does everything she undertakes, she never missed a beat and made my life so much easier.

A very proud moment of the season was the support shown for our Drought Relief weekend. After the Management Committee received a suggestion that we should consider supporting our struggling farmers and at short notice, $1,400 was collected which enabled Ipswich Hockey to purchase 70 bales of hay to be distributed to farmers through the Buy A Bale Campaign. When you add this to the over $2,000 we raised for Ipswich Hospice through this year’s Community Fundraising weekend it shows the generosity of our Ipswich Hockey community. We should all be very proud of the many thousands of dollars that have been raised over the years through our Community Fundraising Weekends.

As we prepare for the 2019 season, change is again a focus as we welcome Hugh Hocking as our new RCD and Hockey Australia introduces a new database platform which will no doubt bring us all a few headaches.

Change is hard at first, messy in the middle but satisfying at the end.

The 2019 season again promises to be a busy one as, along with the usual, we are also to host the Men’s Masters State Championships over the May long weekend. Volunteers will again be the key to a successful season and the hope is that our volunteer base will continue to grow as more and more put their hand up to assist and make the load lighter for everyone.

Margret

Treasurer’s Report for 2018

I am pleased to present the Financial Statements of the Association for the year ended 30 November 2018. The profit for the year was $29,769 as compared with the 2017 result of $7,552. The 2018 revenue was slightly higher than 2017, with game and training fees, and indoor hockey receipts the main contributors to the increase. Total expenditure in 2018 was lower than 2017 comparatives, although water costs continue to increase. Capital expenditure in 2018 included purchase of a new toilet block for the grass fields which is anticipated to be connected for the start of the 2019 season, and the automatic control valves on 4 of the cannons on the water base were replaced. Current projects include refurbishment of the interior of the TriDan shed and upgrade of facilities in the kitchen; both of these are planned to be completed by the start of the season. Our Balance Sheet remains strong, with some cash reserves in the form of term deposits in readiness for when the artificial surfaces need to be replaced, and the Association has no debt. I would like to thank your Assistant Treasurer, Emily Jaenke for her valuable assistance during 2018, and also again I would like to acknowledge John & Una Cushing who assisted in various receipting and banking of funds during the year.

RAP Team Co-ordinator’s Report 2018

Another successful year in the RAP Team, due to the magnificent efforts of Karen Dolan over not only the past 6 years, but in her support and assistance to me during this handover year. So, Thank You Karen for all that you have done to establish this team for the betterment of Ipswich Hockey and the wider community in Ipswich in general. Using some now staple events at the Hockey grounds to support local charities and businesses, is simply outstanding and hopefully the team will continue this precedence for years to come.

I took on this role, certainly not appreciating the work that goes on behind the scenes to ensure that we can all play the game. Clearly, I have very quickly come to understand the tireless hours that the Executive and Management Committee commit to the association every day.

To recap the year that was for the RAP Team

Our first Social Event back in April - Whilst this was not necessarily the success we hoped it would be, there were certainly some learnings to take away for future events. It would be great to see more people come out to watch our top level hockey players in action, as well as the members stick around afterwards.

Our Community fundraiser day, complete with Market stalls! – these are always a hit with lots of local wares on display and where we get to support and contribute to many small businesses in the local area. This year we supported the Ipswich Hospice and raised over $2,000.

Hosting of Coulter Shield Under 13 boys – where we got to show off our players and the association. It’s amazing to see and feel the passion and sportsmanship that these young players have and we were all super proud of them. It was also great to see some other representative teams also coming out to help with the BBQ/Canteen/selling raffle tickets.

Hosting of the U18 Men’s State Championships – Again, our amazing people volunteered their time to ensure our facilities were of the same high standard as the outstanding players that were on show.

Hook in2 Hockey - These young ones (and there were lots of them this year), get to experience the best of the association. Each club committing to showing them the ropes of hockey but also making it fun and friendly, so they continue their hockey journey and hopefully bring some friends along too. Our Theme day was “Christmas in July”.

Grill’d sportsmanship vouchers - we introduced the idea of rewarding great behaviour this year too. So everyone gets a chance to be recognised for the work they do within the association; anything from helping to clean up around the grounds to supporting an umpire/opposition teammate. I loved this idea and hope to keep it going into this coming year as well.

Junior Carnival Day – The jewel in the RAP team crown where all the young players (and some not so young) get to really enjoy the end of the season and have some fun. A lot of work goes into organising the rides and stalls PLUS it’s an enormous day for the Management Committee, not just to establish the rides, market stalls, BBQ and Coffee, but to ensure that ALL of our young Hook in2 Hockey players receive a well-earned “goodie bag” to cap off their year.

On the back of Karen and the teams’ laser focus on building the player base, the aim of the RAP Team this year is to continue to build the player base (as we all know, new players are essential to the survival of the sport and the association) and to encourage other players and spectators to become more involved. There is always a need for helpers, not just on big event days, but the usual weekend fixtures as well.

Regional Coaching Director’s Report 2018

Season 2018 was very busy for Ipswich Hockey and all associations with many disruptions due to Commonwealth Games and hosting championships. A lot like 2017, many achievements have been made by the association, hockey community and our athletes which puts Ipswich Hockey in an exciting position moving into the 2019 season.

The 2018 season yet again saw another strong participation level in Hook in2 Hockey U5, U7 & U9s with our numbers continuously growing thanks to the hard work of those within the hockey community; it would be great to continue with this growth pattern through the 2019 season. A big thank-you to all the club’s Hook in2 Hockey coaching staff, especially our first time Hin2H coaches and those juniors who are put their hand up to better our junior athletes. It’s great to have them teaching and inspiring our future stars on how to play the game, but more importantly how to have fun playing the game. It was great to see all clubs once again have Hook in2 Hockey teams; this is exciting for the growth and depth of our junior athletes. Once again it has been great to walk the fields on a Saturday morning and see the children and the coaches learning new skills and having so much FUN!!

Towards the latter half of the U9 season we again introduced our junior umpires with a strong focus on the basic rules of Feet, Height of the Stick and the number of players in the tackle allowing coaches to focus on coaching the children and getting them to use all the field (width) and the skills that they had learnt in the first half of the season. Whilst the children were having fun doing skills/drills and playing games they forgot that they were also learning new skills.

A very big thank you to Umpiring Committee for making sure that there were umpires each week and giving our young umpires the opportunities to gain confidence and learn more rules and about themselves as umpires. It was great to see many of our junior umpires return this year and take the next step to E Grade.

A big thank you to Tracey Doyle and the RAP Team for all their time and hard work that went into our Hin2H ‘Christmas in July’ Theme Day for all of the U5, 7 & 9 children. It was excellent to see so many children and coaches dress up as their favourite part of Christmas and play games and have photos taken, all whilst enjoying the atmosphere of Theme Day.

Our E Grade continued to go from strength to strength offering many of our U9 boys the opportunity to play up in the E Grade Competition, learning and refining some new skills along with forging new friendships. It has continued to grow our player base from U9s to E Grade. This growth was again reflected at the U11 Coulter Shield Carnival where we were able to take 4 boy’s teams to compete.

These strong numbers across both boys and girls in E Grade and U9s Hin2H has provided great strength in the E, D, & C Grades competitions for the 2018 season. It was also fantastic to see many of the C Grade boys and girls given opportunities to play up and gain some experience in the senior grades. With this exposure the young athletes are able to grow in confidence and skills, not only strengthening the clubs but Ipswich Hockey.

2018 saw Hancock Brothers Men and Wests Women win the A Grade finals with Norths (men) and Hancocks (women) being runners up. Congratulations to all the clubs that played in finals and we look forward to seeing you all play again in the 2019 season. It was disappointing to see Bellbowrie not field an A Grade Women’s team, however it was exciting to see the players that were committed to playing join other clubs and continue to play the season.

We hosted an array of hockey in 2018; QLD U18 Men’s State Championships, Coulter Shield U13 Boys, Southern Cross U15 Girls. A massive thank you to all of the volunteers that worked tirelessly during these tournaments; without you we would not have been so very successful.

Thank you to all Coaches, Managers, and Selectors on a successful Rep season; your hard work and dedication to our athletes is greatly appreciated and without your time and efforts there would be no future for our athletes. It will be great to have you all back again being involved in the Rep programs and development programs.

Like 2017, 2018 was a very busy season for everyone. Learning from the 2017 season, we recognised that the athletes were exhausted and in need of down time to rest and recharge. Our athletes are playing more hockey now than ever and it’s important that we are not over playing them and giving opportunities for them to be able to get away from the game so we do not burn them out.

Development training from the end of the fixture rounds up until a week prior to Christmas were based around those that were selected in the QLD U18 / U15 and U16 Southern Emerging athletes squads, along with those athletes that are transitioning from U13 to U15s. For the transitioning athletes, it was good to expose them to the next level of training and expectations with in the next age group. We also held an U13 Boys camp which was very successful, it will be exciting to see these kinds of camps for the U13 Girls and other age groups continue.

The U13 Boys camp was made successful with the assistance of local coaches and visiting coaches such as Renee Taylor (Hockeyroo) and Matt Finn (QLD Blade / Snr Aust Dev Squad). Thanks must also go to Aimee McDermott for her assistance in getting sponsors on board to have shirts made up for the boys camp. Off field and on field education sessions were well received by the boys and the local coaches. Also having the boys stay overnight was a very good thing as the friendships formed by the boys was excellent. By Sunday lunch time when they finished with games and slip ‘n’ slide, the boys were exhausted but asking when they could do it again; very positive signs for boys hockey.

Reflecting on the 2018 Season and the past 3.5 years, the Ipswich Hockey Community has once again achieved many great things; change in the Executive Committee, athletes of all ages excelled through hard work and dedication in representing at all levels, volunteers were recognised for their outstanding dedication, hosting QLD State Championships / Coulter Shield & Southern Cross, conducting one of the largest Hook in2 Hockey programs in Queensland, growth in participation numbers, umpires excelling, sporting schools participation, upgrades to the facilities; the this list goes on and on.

It’s has been a real honour to represent and wear the Ipswich Uniform for the last 3.5 years and see our athletes also wear it with pride. There have been so many highlights from the rep / club seasons that would be awesome to tell you about however some highlights that standout for me are: being able to give all athletes an opportunity to play rep, not just for Ipswich but for other regions, taking over 120 U11 Boys and Girls to Downey Park for Southern Cross / Coulter Shield, seeing participation numbers grow in the rep program, more coaches return to the rep program, Masters Men finish in the top 2 and their QLD Rep number grow, Australian achievements, seeing a skill execution come off and the realisation that comes after it; just a few of the highlights. But with highlights come some disappointment; seeing clubs fold, seeing teams not entered, not letting kids be kids, problems presented but no solutions offered, understanding that failure and no are healthy at all levels.

You would have read earlier in my report the list of athletes that have had the privilege and honour to pull on the Maroon and represent QLD or the Green and Gold and represent Australia. Our youngest was 12 and the oldest, well let’s just say is in the 75+ age group and competed in a Grand Masters World Cup in Spain winning Gold. A very big Congratulations to you all.

Page 24: IPSWICH HOCKEY ASSOCIATION Inc - revolutioniseSPORT · 2020-01-17 · water tank and pump shed, renovating of the kitchen and the connection of the toilet block to service the grass

Without an Executive Committee IHA would not be a functioning association so please, if there is something that you feel isn’t working, do not whinge about it but bring a solution to the meeting and a willingness to be involved and put that solution into practice. Stop and appreciate the time that the Executive put in, not just on club fixture days but every day and behind the scenes. Without the countless hours that they put in nothing would happen. I’m ever grateful to the committee for their support and guidance that they have extended to me in my time as RCD.

From me to you (IHA Hockey Community), thank you so very much for all your guidance and support I have greatly appreciated it. Wishing you all the success for the 2019 season and beyond. Yours in Hockey Sam Spry RCD IHA

Umpire’s President Report 2018

2018 started with the majority of the umpires committee new to their appointed roles, with Treasurer Paul Hardie and Development Coordinator Bernie Gotting continuing from the 2017 season. As with all new committees it took some time to find our feet but one thing was obvious, the passion that we have for our sport and the way that it is officiated.

Our focus was to concentrate on umpire development and, with this in mind, a program was set up to mentor, record and deliver feedback to all umpires, junior and senior. Umpire briefings were conducted early in the season to involve umpires for a consistent interpretation of rules, with follow up briefings held later in the season.

Congratulations must go to Bernie and Robert Lewis for conducting the Junior Umpire Clinics on Saturday mornings which form the foundation for building our umpire numbers. It is evident from the success of Ipswich umpires officiating at Inter-City, State and National events that we must be doing something right and that is directly attributed to the effort put in by previous and current committees.

The use of radios has continued throughout all senior grades and on some occasions were used by mentors in C grade games to listen to how umpires were interacting with the players and gathering feedback for the continuous improvement of our juniors. During the senior finals, the 3rd umpire was provided with a radio so they could listen to the communication between the umpires on the field and have an understanding of how the game was being officiated in case called upon to step in.

The week in and week out allocation of umpires to in excess of 30 games per weekend is a tireless and thankless task, which is often not appreciated by our players and/or spectators. A big thank you must go to Jan Walker, Adam Spry and Leonie Young for the allocations each week.

A final thank you to the Umpires Committee – Leonie, Robert, Leanne, Bernie and Paul for all their efforts and their time. Without your commitment and hard work there would be no umpires. Hope to see you all in the 2019 Season.

Yours in hockey, Mark Eleison President

Record’s Secretary Report 2018

Ladies and Gentlemen: I present to you this report on behalf of the members of the Tech Committee for the 2018 Season. This season saw the introduction of R2 Grade for the Men’s competition, which was pleasing for all involved. This is still a work in progress and all Clubs must be mindful of the reasons behind this grade and ensure that teams involved met these criteria. Once again, we were able to retain three junior grades within the junior boy’s competition. However, this achievement was only possible due to the various Clubs working together to ensure that we had combined teams. The E Grade Boys competition is developing well, and it was wonderful to have the six teams participating within this competition. The management of the junior boy’s competition is one area that needs constant attention and the support of all Clubs is vital. It was pleasing to see all Clubs working together to ensure the junior competition for both boy’s and girl’s is maintained. This support from Clubs is paramount to ensure our junior competition continues to grow and provides our junior members with the opportunity to develop. Our Hook in2 Hockey program is well received by all involved and this is an area we can all be extremely proud of. May these little ones continue to enjoy their hockey and in time transition into the junior competition. We once again held the Combined Competition for the A Grade Men and Women with Toowoomba teams. This competition provides that extra variation to our competition and allows our members to compete again their peers from a different Association. The various results of club fixtures are listed on the pages that follow.

State Championships Ipswich Hockey Association continues to have the player depth to enable our Association to send representative teams away to the various State Championships. Attendance at these championships is a value tool that provides extra development opportunity for our members. This is especially important for our junior members to enable those to compete at that higher level, which in turns assists greatly with their development. It is also pleasing to note that as an Association we continue to a have number of our mature members selected in State teams Our teams finished as follows: -

There is also a multitude of other tasks that the members are required to attend to on a regular basis. An extra special “Thank-you” to Heather for always ensuring that the game cards are ready each fixture week-end and keeping the Women’s playing records up to date. Special “Thank-you” also to Lyn for ensuring that the on-line results are recorded in a timely manner. Also sincere “Thanks” to June and Margret for your ongoing support. I would also like to offer a huge “Thank-you” to Pauline Alchin for her support and assistance during the season. This being her first season as Senior Vice President was a huge learning curve for her, however she was always available for a discussion and to offer assistance. Good luck to all Clubs for the 2019 Season. Lesley Mc Leod Records Secretary
