Patron’s Message

The Ipswich Hockey Association has done a lot to put hockey on the map in south east Queensland and is a feat that would not have been possible without the hard work of Margret Mantell and the Management Committee.

Ipswich is a great sporting city and at tonight’s AGM you will select a president and committee to lead the association forward.

On behalf of Councillors and residents, I would like to thank the current team for their tireless volunteer work for the Ipswich Hockey Association.

Ipswich has world-class hockey facilities which are a real credit to the Ipswich Hockey Association and its talented players.

Each year 10 different clubs come together at Briggs Road to compete for the top honour and watch the popular world sport, and the association does a tremendous job co-ordinating the season.

Well done to the Ipswich Hockey Association of another successful year, I welcome the new committee members and wish all the players, families, coaches and supporters all the best for the 2014 season.

President’s Report 2013

2013 – What a great season it was. This time last year I commented that ‘Teamwork divides the task and multiplies the success’. And that has certainly again proved to be the case. Our list of successes from the 2013 season is something of which we should be very proud and I believe is a direct result of the great teamwork that exists within our Ipswich Hockey family. The most satisfying of our achievements for the season was finalising negotiations with Ipswich City Council with regard to the sale of our excess land and putting arrangements in place which will ensure this area can remain as a sporting precinct for the benefit of the entire Ipswich Community. These negotiations have been a labour of love for our treasurer for almost 3½ years and his persistence has ensured Ipswich Hockey can once again move forward and continue to provide a top class facility for our members and the people of Ipswich. With our financial position now secure, the Executive has started working on a ‘wish list’ of refurbishments and improvements for our Complex. We decided the first step was to get our surfaces accessed to give us some idea of when they may need to be replaced and therefore how much we should currently have in our sinking fund to be able to fund the replacement. Once that report is received, we can move forward with bringing items on the wish list to fruition. The year also ended on a high with an early Christmas present; confirmation from the Australian Government of the provision of the $250 000 pledged by Theresa Harding, the local LNP candidate in the recent Federal Election, for the upgrade of our lights to get them back to international standard. Our thanks to Theresa for her ongoing support. Planning is now underway for the upgrade which will take place in the off season. Ipswich Hockey’s name was again in the Awards spotlight with Karen Dolan & Louise McNamara being recognised at the Hockey Queensland Annual Awards and Jordyn Holzberger (Senior Sportsperson of the Year) and Lyn Grulke (Master Sports Awards) receiving their awards at the City of Ipswich Sports Awards. Congratulations to all. Our success continued on the field as well with 3 State Championship wins (Under 18 Boys, Masters Women Divisions 1 & 4) and a win at the Under 13 Girls State Indoor Challenge. We also played a major part in winning the most prestigious title of the year when the South West Lumberjacks (featuring a number of Ipswich players and coached by Nathan Hooper) won the Super League Title. All of our representative teams were a credit to Ipswich Hockey and the hard work and dedication put in by the players as well as the coaches (led by our Coaching Director Neil) and managers and supported by the parents is greatly appreciated. Due to the dedication of so many, our future certainly looks bright with continued growth in our junior numbers, particularly thanks to the ongoing success of our Hook in2 Hockey program and more structured 7’s & 9’s competitions. The number of players being recognised and selected in Queensland teams & squads is also evidence that we are on the right track and all the hard work is paying off. Ipswich Hockey’s inaugural End of Season Gala Presentation Night proved to be a great success and from the many positive comments received, will certainly be back again in 2014 hopefully bigger and better.

Page 8: IPSWICH HOCKEY ASSOCIATION INC. - revolutioniseSPORT · 2020. 1. 17. · IPSWICH HOCKEY ASSOCIATION Inc President’s Report 2013 2013 – What a great season it was. This time last

It is certainly a privilege to be able to report and highlight our ever growing list of successes, but I feel the most important part of my report is to acknowledge and thank those who go above and beyond to make Ipswich Hockey great. Neil has again worked tirelessly as our Coaching Director, with his passion obvious. Lesley and the Technical Committee faced a challenging year with Hockey Australia introducing a completely new database system. It certainly increased Lesley’s workload, and continues to do so as yet more changes are introduced. But Lesley and her committee were not deterred and ensured the season ran like clockwork. The Umpires Committee continues to produce quality umpires under the expert guidance of Bernie, Chris, Paul, John & Leonie. The Judicial Panel of Janette, Bernie, Sara, Dennis & Leanne were very professional in their approach and in handling what everyone agrees is the least enviable role within our Association. Heartfelt thanks to these people for the great work they do and they hours they give to Ipswich Hockey. There were a number of occasions during 2013 where we put out the call for volunteers to assist. These included when we hosted the Under 15 girls state championships and when we were asked to cater for 250 when touring English hockey and rugby teams were in town. Special thanks to all who gave up their time and helped out. It certainly shared the workload and again proved how wonderful Ipswich Hockey people are. I would like to make special mention of our honourary legal adviser, Justin Thomas. The work Justin does for us and the advice he gives is invaluable. It is so reassuring knowing you can contact Justin about any matter and he will be only too happy to assist. His contribution to our Association is very much appreciated. ‘It is amazing how much you can accomplish when it doesn’t matter who gets the credit’. I’m quite certain this is the philosophy of the amazing people who make up your Executive. They are a truly great group of people to be a part of. Chris came on board in 2013 as Secretary and has certainly not let the grass grow under his feet. He made it clear from the outset that one of his main goals was the painting of the clubhouse. And as is obvious, he achieved that goal. With the assistance of Mark & Peter as well as Liz, Yasmin & Zac, the transformation is almost complete – a mighty effort, and doesn’t the ‘new paint job’ in our clubhouse look great! Mark took on the role of VP – Clubhouse and also hit the ground running. His knowledge and expertise has been invaluable and has ensured our clubhouse operations ran smoothly. Mark is also coordinating the refurbishment of the toilets both upstairs & down. It will be great to see our clubhouse looking fresh and new again. Peter, Karen, Nathan and Paul continued in their roles and again their dedication, commitment and contribution is without equal. No request is ever too much and everything they do, they do with a smile. Words cannot express my thanks to these exceptional people who make my job so much easier. I would like to thank everyone involved, the players, supporters and club officials, for the great season 2013 was and wish everyone all the best for the new season. We look to 2014 with much excitement and anticipation as we plan for the upgrade of our lights and finalise future plans for our Complex. But let’s keep in mind, ‘Progress has little to do with speed, but much to do with direction.’

Margret

Senior Vice-President’s Report 2013 Season

Good Evening Ladies, Gentlemen and Distinguished Guests, What a sensational year 2013 has been for all involved with the Ipswich Hockey community. It has been great to see a massive turn around in our junior numbers as well as retention of our senior players. The spike in interest in our Hook In2 Hockey program shows that the future is bright for the Ipswich Hockey Association. These results can’t be achieved without the tireless work of all the volunteers within our hockey community and to those people I say THANK YOU! The reasonably new committee is well into its second year in charge and there has been nothing but positive change. Just one example is the bringing back of some of our most senior players in the Classic League played up on the grass fields throughout the year. It is great to see some of our older stars back with a stick in their hand and having a run enjoying each other’s company and no doubt a few ales after the game. Big congratulations must go to the tireless efforts of Karen Dolan and Neil Shearer and all those who work closely with those two to ensure Ipswich Hockey has events such as Open Day, the Hook In2 Hockey program and break up and the Junior Hockey Grand Final day. These sorts of events are the ones that really attract new people to our Association. Neil does a great job in ensuring the hockey side of things is taken care of and Karen works well with her subcommittee and fantastic volunteers to make sure there is an attractive party atmosphere where people feel most welcome. Once again I must thank our President Margret Mantell for all the hard work and long hours that she gives to this association. Most people wouldn’t recognise the effort that Margret puts into IHA and I would suggest that any person that thinks the job of President is an easy one should sit in her shoes for a week. Margret has been a great role model for all in the IHA community and a constant source of information, inspiration and dedication that is always on display. I would hope that all members of IHA find the time to thank Margret for her hard work throughout the year. From me personally I would like to thank Margret for all her help and assistance over the last couple of years. I unfortunately will not be able to continue my role as Senior Vice President as I am unable to find the time to be able to commit to the role as is required. As this will be my last year as Senior Vice President I would just like to thank the greater IHA community for their assistance during my tenure. I would like to particularly thank Bernie Gotting for her help in finding umpires every week. I would also like to thank all those people who have been involved with the judiciary over the last couple of years. Once again I would like to thank Margret and Paul Mantell for their assistance and guidance. I have thoroughly enjoyed my time as Senior Vice President and leave the post proud of the work I have done with IHA and the work IHA has done with the Ipswich Community. I look forward to continuing on in organising the Ipswich Hockey Association Awards night which I hope will continue to be a success. Regards Nathan Hooper Senior Vice President

Secretary’s Report 2013

The 2013 season, been and gone in the flash of an eye, or that is what it seemed to me. My first year in the role of Secretary has been one of enjoyment, and this is mainly due to the help and encouragement received by my fellow executive members. These people have helped to develop me in the role of Secretary. Special mention would have to go Trish Harley, for taking the time to stay around and educate me in the procedures that she has set up to make this job run as smoothly as possible and then finally taking on the role of Assistant Secretary. Thank you Trish! In my opinion the 2013 season was divided into highs and lows, the lows being something that we can all work on together, which I’ll go into later. Undoubtedly the highlight of the year was the IHA coming out of debt, what a great achievement for all players, members, supporters and officials (past and present). Special mention would have to go Paul and Margret Mantell for the amount of work they put into achieving this final result. Also the work put into this by our legal man, Justin Thomas, there is not enough words to describe his effort. These efforts have enabled us to be at a point where we can now start to do some beautification work on our complex, which is well and truly under way now. Well Done IHA. Two of the IHA personnel were nominated for awards at the annual Hockey Queensland Awards Lunch, these being Karen Dolan for the Volunteer of the Year Award and Louise McNamara for the Community Coach of the Year. It was great to see that both of these ladies came away with these awards. Congratulations to Karen and Louise. Congratulations must go our State Championship winning teams, our Masters Ladies started the year off well winning the Division 1 and Division 3 titles. Our Under 18 men finished the year off well winning the final state championship for 2013, undefeated. Congratulations would have to go to the numerous players (names of these players found in Record Secretary Report) that have been selected from our IHA representative teams to represent Queensland. Sadly now we get onto the biggest low of the 2013 season!!! The biggest issue that I found this year was the amount of “COMPLAINTS” that the Executive committee had to handle. Some of these were handed on to our Judiciary for further investigation, but the majority of these were found to be on the verge of being silly. Due to amount of these complaints coming in, I had to start a new folder just for these complaints. At the completion of the season, there were a total of 30 plus complaints.

Page 12: IPSWICH HOCKEY ASSOCIATION INC. - revolutioniseSPORT · 2020. 1. 17. · IPSWICH HOCKEY ASSOCIATION Inc President’s Report 2013 2013 – What a great season it was. This time last

I believe that clubs should communicate more with each other in an effort to try to resolve these issues themselves. But if there is a feeling that an outcome satisfactory to those involved is not achievable, then refer it to IHA. The amount of time used to deal with these by the Executive could be more actively used doing other tasks. A thank you for a big effort must go to the following people; Margret Mantell, Paul Mantell, Karen Dolan, Peter Conway, Mark Eleison and Nathan Hooper. These are the people that are here early to open up or there most of the day overseeing the complex and fixtures, or staying after the last game to lock the complex. Thank you also to Lesley McLeod and the Technical Committee who put in the hours doing the training rosters and fixtures, not to mention the late requests from clubs each weekend. Well done. And finally to all our Volunteers, whether you be a coach, or a parent who helps out with small tasks, it is all greatly appreciated. The more of these people we get involved, the less that the minority has to do. Thanking you all for this opportunity, and see you in the 2014 season. Chris Leeder

Treasurer’s Report for 2013

Mr Patron, Madam President, Ladies & Gentlemen

I am pleased to present the Financial Statements of the Association for the year ended 30th November 2013.

Normally my report dissects and compares our revenue and expenses for the last year, and how they may have been higher or lower than the previous year etc.

This year I would simply like to report that after 3½ years of discussions with Ipswich Council, during 2013 we were able to come to agreement with Council to sell our land west of our car park to Council, and to lease our top grass fields to Council for 20 years. We received a total of $1.5 million dollars for this transaction, and the process was negotiated as a package deal.

This is an excellent outcome for both Ipswich Hockey and the City of Ipswich in my view, as funds from the combined sale and lease allowed us to repay our bank loan and to set some funds aside to commence saving for replacement of our two turfs in the not too distant future. As a resident of Ipswich and from an Ipswich community perspective, I believe it also ensures that these fields are kept as part of a wider sporting precinct in Briggs Road into the future, as part of this long term partnership with Ipswich Council.

I would like to thank your Assistant Treasurer, Julie Eleison for her continued valuable assistance during 2013. I would also like to recognise John & Una Cushing who continued to assist us in various receipting and banking of funds during the year.

Paul Mantell B.Com FCPAHonorary Treasurer

RAP Team Co-ordinator’s Report 2013

2013 saw the members of the RAP team hit the ground running with Open Day bringing many new faces which did assist in us picking up new players. We ended up with 65 additional junior players based on comparing 2012 to 2013 junior numbers with the main increase being our Hook in2 Hockey numbers growing by 51 players! Our senior player numbers did slide slightly so that is something that we must keep an eye on. Many of the ideas of 2012 flowed into 2013, however we did introduce our Sensational Saturday BBQ breakfasts for each Hook in2 Hockey morning. This enabled us to feed hungry tummies, add to clubs and rep teams fundraising coffers and add to the family friendly atmosphere on early Saturday mornings. The other first was our Senior Gala Awards Function which was a huge success. Many thanks to Nathan, Leonie & Bridget for organising the night and for everyone who turned up and had a fantastic evening ... I can’t wait for the 2014 event which will no doubt be bigger and better. Amongst all the fun and frivolity there are always a few challenges and a major one was the differing standards of players in some of our junior grades. Different tactics were put in place for specific players and teams and whilst we tried our best, not everyone was happy. As with other team sports based on age not ability there will always be times where there are teams in clubs stronger than others, but if the aim of all clubs is to encourage participation, promote team work and sportsmanship for all our juniors we should be able to keep the majority happy. The future for our junior grades is looking bright if we can continue with our fantastic Hook in2 Hockey program and our Under 7’s & 9’s feed through to our E and J2 grades with a greater understanding and skill base of previous years. An outstanding achievement for Ipswich Hockey was the $10,000 grant we received from the Queensland Government under their ‘Get in the Game’ program. This has allowed us to “kit” out Hook in2 Hockey coaches with hats and whistles, purchase marketing material for goodie bags for potential players and employ a project officer to visit schools and run come and try sessions. We have our fingers crossed for a bunch of new players to come in 2014 from this initiative and we thank Erin Alchin for being a great Ambassador for Ipswich Hockey in this role. Our Hook in 2 Hockey Theme Day (Superhero Day this year) and Carnival day are proving to be quite successful, Open Day probably needs a revamp for 2015 and our Association raffle to assist in funding our Carnival day is being shelved for 2014, replaced with a levy. The Classic Hockey League driven by Phil Jackwitz, Baz Chamberlain and others has been a major hit with our older men and we will be looking for interested women to get a similar competition going for our ladies for Summer Season. We also hope to get an Indoor Hockey Committee up and running early this year, so if you are interested in this please keep an eye out for meeting invitations. The biggest plus I believe from the RAP team’s point of view for 2013 is the continued support shown by all clubs to get involved in our different activities, to jump in and help out when help is required and I look forward to 2014 being another success story for all 10 clubs involved in Ipswich Hockey. I sincerely thank my partners in crime, Margret, Jan, Leanne, Tracey, Pauline, Lesley, Liz, Trish, my family (who turn a blind eye to my dirty house come hockey season), the IHA Executive team who patiently listen to my ideas and help make them happen and everyone who is happy to share their ideas, thoughts and complaints with me. Robyn from Ipswich Sports House who unfortunately has moved onto greener pastures, was also a huge help in 2013. Remember our team has an open door policy and if you would like to be involved in assisting in the growth and development of Ipswich Hockey we would love to see you soon. Next meeting will be in late March, so keep an eye out for the date. Thank you Karen Dolan RAP Team Co-ordinator 2013

Regional Coaching Director’s Report 2013

Last season was my third year with Ipswich Hockey; time has gone so quickly. The Ipswich Hockey family continues to be friendly, sincere and a pro-active organisation. My Daughter Alexis played her first season in Hook in2 Hockey under 5’s and she enjoyed the experience. Alexis will play again in this up-coming-season, while Nicolas & Julie enjoy the atmosphere of the Saturday mornings. I’m grateful for the help and advice received by everyone in helping to improve Ipswich Hockey, and by continuing to work together we have made our great sport develop. I’m looking forward to observing and helping Hearts Hockey Club in 2014 to grow, develop & foster the Ipswich Hockey culture within their club. 2013 season started with our Open Day; all clubs working together. From this day we found we need to run an introduction program for new players before the season starts. We moved on to our Hook in2 Hockey program with its continued development of the under 5’s, 7’s & 9’s age groups. Our program continues to grow and has become one of the leading programs, if not the number one program, in Queensland. The under 9 competition has become a club competition with umpires developed. Thank you to all involved and helping the Ipswich Hockey Hin2H program become the success it is. Without you and the players, we have nothing. The Junior Girls competition age groups were E, D, & C Grade. Junior Boys were once again J1 (under 15) & J2 (under 12). The Boys numbers did grow in 2013, just not enough players to go back to 3 grades. Hopefully 2014 we will have 3 Grades for the boys. I think an under 11 Boys competition is a must in Ipswich to help protect the new, less experienced players to stay in our competition. “Recruit, Retain, Recruit & Retain is the message”. I hope this again comes true in 2014 for retaining players. A big thank you must go to Karen Dolan & her team for their help making Ipswich Hockey grow. In 2013, both Ipswich and Toowoomba A Grade competitions combined for the mid-season cup. Is there a place for a combined competition or carnival day/days for our under 15 players with Toowoomba? Again, both Ipswich and Toowoomba under 11 rep teams played inter-city games in July. With 2 boys and 4 girls teams participating, well done to all concern. IHA A Grade competitions were close struggles, with Swifts and Easts running out with the A Grade Trophies. Hancocks Women and Norths Men were runners up. Congratulations to all the Clubs who participated in 2013. Looking forward to seeing you all back in season2014. There were two HockeyEd coaching accreditation courses run in 2013. A combined Community & AASC accreditation course conducted and a Level one. Most of our Hin2H coaches completed their Community accreditation. Everyone who completed these courses: Well done. We are always looking for more accredited coaches & AASC coaches. Congratulations to our under 18 Boys, players, coach & manager in winning the Queensland under 18 Championship in Townsville. Also, thank you to the parents & supporters. Ipswich had 5 players in the 2014 under 18 Boys Queensland squad. Congratulations to Nathan Hooper (Coach) and to the Ipswich players who played in the winning South West (Lumberjacks) Super League side, for some of these players it was their first State Title win.

Page 19: IPSWICH HOCKEY ASSOCIATION INC. - revolutioniseSPORT · 2020. 1. 17. · IPSWICH HOCKEY ASSOCIATION Inc President’s Report 2013 2013 – What a great season it was. This time last

Yet again, Ipswich was able to send 2 under 13 Boys teams away in 2013; 2 years in a row. Let’s go for 3 years in a row. Please view all results plus who made the Queensland teams & squads in supporting documents. In 2013, our summer competition was only under 13 boys & girls competitions. This comp was using most of the indoor rules with side-boards on the Hybrid field 1 night a week for 8 weeks. Springfield College Girls provided one team; hopefully this may lead the players into main-stream hockey in Ipswich. From this comp, Ipswich sent away 2 boys teams & 2 girls teams to Hockey Queensland’s under 13 State Challenge with Ipswich Roar (under 13 Girls) winning the final against South Brisbane 2–1. Unreal, first time in history, Ipswich has won a State indoor title. Congratulations to all the girls involved and congratulations to all players, parents, coaches & managers for your involvement. Ipswich also sent away under 15 boys & girls indoor teams for the State Challenge. The Girls finished 3rd, narrowly missing out on the final with a draw against Brisbane 1 in the semi-final. While the Boys faded away into 6th spot. Hannah Casey & Brooke Pavitt were chosen in the Queensland under 15 girls indoor team, Layla Eleison shadow, Kelly McNamara TID while Jacob Robertson, Caleb McCoombes & Bailey Hoyland-Meaker made the Queensland boys team, Tomas Picton shadow. A big Thank You must go to everybody who continues to make my family feel welcome here as we moved into our new home in 2013, thank you Nathan for your part. Plus, HUGE thanks must go to Mr. & Mrs. Cushing for continuing to be our Baby sitters with late notice. We are both so indebted to you. Final note: thank you to all rep team coaches, managers & selectors for the 2013 rep season. Let’s hope 2014 will bring more success. I sincerely thank the IHA Executives for your help and support and to everyone involved in Ipswich Hockey. This is not a job; it is a passion, hobby and a great sport. This year has been another exceptional year for Ipswich umpires with many being recognised for their performances at State and National championships. Most of our umpires are recognised for their ability by being appointed to divisional finals at most State Championships. I would like to thank the rest of the Umpires Committee members, Secretary Chris Leeder and new Treasurer Paul Hardie for their tireless work throughout this season, and John Corney for his continued work in mentoring the junior umpires. His guidance to our umpires has seen them develop their umpiring skills and confidence throughout the season. We have a number of younger umpires who are now umpiring more senior grades and a handful who have started umpiring A Grade Women’s and Men’s games. They made the step up look easy and that’s a credit to their umpiring ability. But thanks also to the players and coaches who had patience and understanding with their learning curve during these games. Our development program continues with our junior umpire’s clinics which saw another group of young umpires complete training this season. Thanks to Leonie Young for conducting these sessions. Having our senior and more experienced umpires working with and mentoring these juniors on a more regular basis proved to be beneficial. Our senior awards for the Basil Coker Shield for Umpiring Achievement and Herb Eleison Award for Services to Umpiring were awarded to Aaron Gotting and Leonie Young respectively at the inaugural IHA Presentation night and our junior awards were presented at our annual umpires dinner. The full list of award winners follows. Congratulations to all umpires who officiated on local fixtures, finals, State Championships, and to those who have won awards for their performances this season. Congratulations to Jess Fox, Kai Douglas and Aaron Gotting who attended and performed well at National Championships. Also to Chris Leeder who has been chosen to attend the Masters World Cup this year. Keep up the good work. Hopefully the upcoming season will show growth and development with our umpires and that Ipswich umpires continue to have the same success we have always had. Yours in Hockey Bernadette Gotting

Records Secretary’s Report – 2013 Season

Ladies and Gentlemen:

This report is presented with pleasure on behalf of the Technical Committee. Whilst we had many challenges during the 2013 season, the support provided by Clubs and their members ensured that we had successful outcomes.

It was extremely pleasing to see that the Hook in2 Hockey program has continued to grow. There were 212 children registered in 2012. During the 2013 Season there was an increase of 46 children, which meant that 258 children took part each Saturday morning learning about our great sport.

The future for our junior competition looks positive given the numbers for Hook in2 Hockey participants. I am sure it is the hope of all Clubs that a significant number of the Hook in2 Hockey participants will continue into grade hockey.

Whilst the junior boys continued to grow marginally, there just were not sufficient numbers to revert back to E, D and C grade competitions. The junior girls remained at similar numbers to 2012 Season.

The Combined Competition with Toowoomba for A Grade teams once again provided Clubs that extra challenge and gave the competition that extra variety. Given that the finals for both the Men’s and Women’s competition ended in drawn results proved that the competition between both Associations is still very competitive.

The total number of teams nominated for the 2013 season was up by one team compared to the 2012 season numbers. In the men’s there were 26 nominations and 44 teams were nominated in the women’s. The men’s nominations increased by one team, whilst the women remained the same. It was pleasing to see that there was a small increase and no decrease as has been the case for the previous two years. The various results of club fixtures are listed on the pages that follow.

State Championships During the 2013 season it was pleasing to see four of the Ipswich teams gain success at the respective State Championships. Our successful teams were Super League (South West) Men, Under 18 Men and Women’s Masters No. 1 team all being State Champions. Whilst, the Women’s Masters No. 2 team won the Division 4 Title.

Our teams finished as follows:-
