Patron’s Message

Ipswich is a city that prides itself on our sporting prowess and our tremendous local sporting clubs. Local sporting clubs give residents an opportunity to learn new sports, get some exercise in a social setting and for more serious players, can be the start of a successful sporting career. Club sports also teach our kids about healthy competition and good sportsmanship, two valuable life lessons.

Ipswich Hockey Association is a very special sporting organisation in our community with a long history of excellence. I am excited to see the club powering ahead in 2016 supported by a great network of players, umpires, volunteers and coaches.

It takes a whole community of dedicated sports officials to make the Ipswich Hockey Association the success it is. I’d like to thank everyone who’s played a role in the association during 2015 for their dedicated service.

I’d like to especially thank the Management Committee, whose hard work and dedication to hockey in Ipswich have yielded another great year in for the Ipswich Hockey Association.

Our hockey facilities are amongst the finest in south east Queensland and each year these facilities are used by our 10 different local clubs and very welcome visitors from around the state when Ipswich hosts the Queensland State Championships.

These championships are so important for the hockey community, and also bring huge benefits to the wider Ipswich region, with talented players, their families and friends visiting our city.

The Association does a tremendous job co-ordinating the hockey season and is backed by a hard working team of volunteers. All of whom can be exceptionally proud of their efforts.

On behalf of Councillors and residents I would like to thank the current team on a great 2015 season and wish this year’s president and committee all the best for 2016 as you lead the Association forward.

Mayor Paul Pisasale City of Ipswich

President’s Report 2015

2015 was again a very successful year and I am proud to say we worked as a team to successfully conduct various events, and progressed a number of improvements and upgrades to our Complex. My most noteworthy aspects of the 2015 season were:

the commissioning of our new lights,

the appointment of our new Coaching Director,

our hosting of the Men’s Masters State Championships and Queensland Primary Schools State Competition, and

the terracing of Pisasale Place.

Appointing and welcoming Sam Spry to the Ipswich Hockey family as RCD has certainly proved a wise, and possibly our best decision in 2015. Sam comes with incredible enthusiasm and a great vision for the continued growth of Ipswich Hockey and the ongoing development of the wonderful talent there is within our players. Sam has also been more than happy assist in non RCD activities wherever it is needed and I certainly thank Sam, personally for this. And with Sam, we benefited from not just one person but a family with Sam’s husband Adam and her children Tyler & Ashley also heavily involved in assisting our Association. This was never more evident than through the off-season when the Spry Family ran our Junior & Senior Summer Competitions, Tyler & Ashley were also daily helpers during our hosting of State Championships and Adam has played an integral part in assisting Sam with player development sessions, and preparing our players for state trials etc.

Hosting the two state competitions again brought out the best in our hockey community with our wonderful volunteers again putting up their hands and ensuring the success of the events. The Men’s Masters, in particular, also brought a considerable financial benefit to the Association.

Thanks to the ongoing and magnificent support we receive from our Patron, Mayor Paul Pisasale, the terracing of our ‘hill’ and the creation of a level walking path became a reality. Pisasale Place has certainly made a huge difference to the appearance of our Complex while providing a great viewing area and improved access for visitors to our complex. The next stage of this project is hopefully to provide some shade over the terraces. But as with the actual terracing, the cost will be significant and so it will not happen overnight.

As we look to continually improve services for our members and guests, 2015 saw the addition of an ATM in the clubhouse. I believe this proved to be a very successful move and despite the usual reservation around technology and introducing something new, after a couple of early hiccups, the ATM proved a hit and ran smoothly.

Our successes, achievements and development continued on the field, with our various programs, as well. In particular, we again have a vibrant Junior Indoor Competition developing thanks to the continued mighty efforts of Jan Walker and her small, but reliable and dedicated, band of helpers. Jan’s efforts were fittingly acknowledged with Jan being named the 2015 Hockey Queensland Volunteer of the Year. Her efforts were further rewarded; successfully securing a grant from the Queensland Government towards the cost of purpose built running boards. This boost has enabled us to consider relocating to a new venue for the 2016/17 season, a venue which will allow the competition to expand, hopefully including a senior indoor competition and possibly a ‘social’ competition. These new premises would also allow us to be considered to host HQ State Indoor Challenges.

Our junior and senior summer competitions proved a hit for those that participated and this is another area that will no doubt grow as the word spreads that the competitions are back up and running after a break at the end of 2014 when the lights were being replaced.

Page 11: IPSWICH HOCKEY ASSOCIATION INC. - SportsTG · Quest Apartments Ipswich . ... Ipswich Hockey Association is a very special sporting organisation in our community ... IPSWICH HOCKEY

The Hook in2 Hockey program continues to prove popular and the theme day and junior carnival are certainly a highlight of our calendar. Our Gala Awards Dinner went to a new level in 2015 with a change of venue to Brothers League Club and the addition of a band. It was certainly a great night and a credit to all involved.

Of course, no report would be complete without thanking those who give so much of their time and go above and beyond to ensure everyone can play and enjoy the sport they love. While compiling a list, I realise I run the risk of inadvertently leaving someone off, but here we go anyway:

The amazing Executive Team – Janette, Peter, Mark, Karen/Robo, Chris & Paul. No one can know the hours you contribute as so many are unseen. And it is your great team spirit that ensures we have what fun we can and can laugh together through the not-so-fun times

Lesley & the Tech Committee (Heather, Tracey & Janette) – again, the hours dedicated would be almost impossible to measure and keeping everyone happy is an almost impossible task. But your professionalism ensures the season always runs smoothly

Robert & the Umpires Committee (Rae, Paul & Bernie) – I certainly don’t envy your jobs but again, your efforts are very much appreciated. It has been great to see Robert back involved and doing such a great job. And thanks to all the umpires who put themselves in the firing line week in and week out

Karen, Tracey & the RAP Team – I’m never sure where Karen gets her energy and enthusiasm from and it is certainly infectious and the reason the team continues to achieve so much. And Tracey’s decorations, posters, theme day activities etc. are much anticipated.

The team of Tech Officials – this group grew considerably in 2015 due to a mighty recruitment effort by Janette, Amanda Hill & Tracey Doyle

The magnificent ‘Vets’ BBQers Extraordinaire – this team, led by Heather & Phillip Scott, Lyn & John Brown and Janette are becoming legendary, and I can’t imagine a major event without them. As well as when we host State Championships, this year they took on the BBQ on Carnival Day and have certainly set the bar high

Sam & Team Spry (Adam, Tyler & Ashley) – as mentioned elsewhere, their teamwork and commitment goes way above and beyond the RCD job description

Janette & The Gala Committee (Amanda, Tracey, Lyn, June & Pauline) – provided the perfect avenue for acknowledging our 2015 achievers.

Our Volunteer Army – they never let us down Club Officials & Supporters – without your support and the work you do within your clubs,

there would be no Association. Sponsors – continue to give us great support Legal Adviser Justin Thomas – as I say every year, it is just so reassuring to know Justin is at

the other end of the phone (or email) and only too willing to provide his advice and guidance. I think I can speak for the whole Executive when I say Justin ensures we all sleep a little easier at night when the occasional ‘sticky’ situation threatens to arise.

I concluded my report last year commenting on the negative feedback that had been received in the surveys we conducted (One recurrent theme was that new & fresh ideas were needed to move Ipswich Hockey

forward and possibly a change was needed to those making the decisions.) Unfortunately little has changed and again, there are many vacancies in the nominations for positions in 2016. While those who take on positions try to stay positive, eventually the negativity and constant criticism takes its toll. I realise I am speaking to the converted here, but I strongly believe we HAVE to find a way to engage others and get everyone to take some ownership of THEIR Association and be part of a solution rather than just criticising. ‘We do not have to agree; we do need to understand.’ So as we prepare for the new season, I look forward to us all working together again to ensure continued success and growth for Ipswich Hockey.

Senior Vice-President’s Report 2015 Season

2015 was another busy year for our Association holding the Men’s State Masters and the State Primary Schools carnivals, both being successfully run with the help of our reliable volunteers. Thank you to all who assisted.

Our executive once again was kept busy with many projects such as the turning on of our new lights, new sound system and the opening of our popular Paul Pisasale place.

A huge thank you to all the Judiciary people who stepped up when called on and made my job a lot easier. It was pleasing to see it was a quiet year for our Judiciary. Thank you to our tech people who turned up every weekend regardless and I would just like to point out to our players that this is not a paid position and a little bit of respect would go a long way to keeping these people coming.

Chris Leeder our Secretary is standing down this year and I would like to thank him for all the fun times we had when things got serious and also thank you to the rest of the executive, especially Margret, who once again was the rock of the Association.

To our technical committee led by Lesley, thank you once again for a job well done. Until people understand the rules we will always have our knockers.

Lastly I would especially like to thank Denis Tierney and Lyn Brown who were always there to help out and were a great help to me, and also thanks to my family who, without their help, I probably would not have seen the season out.

I hope our 2016 season sees more teams and the start of our Masters competition. Yours in Hockey Janette Howells Senior Vice President

Secretary’s Report 2015

The 2015 season has been and gone in the flash of an eye, or that is what it seemed like to me.

This was my third year in the role and will also be my last for a while as I pursue other interests in my life.

Congratulations must go to the Ipswich Hockey Family on hosting a very successful Masters Carnival, for the upgrade of the hill on the northern side of the clubhouse and also the successful transition of RCD during the actual hockey season. Congratulations must go to Sam for making this achievable.

Finally congratulations to the Technical and Executive committees for their work throughout the Year. These positions are relentless in the time needed to perform these roles, and the volunteer people that we get/have is outstanding. These people make taking on the job more enjoyable as we all try to have as much fun as possible.

I have always believed that we all need to put something back into sport, I have received a lot from Ipswich Hockey, especially when in the junior ranks, and I hope that I have returned some of this by putting something back into hockey in my senior years. This I believe more people need to think about. It’s alright to receive but we need to give as well, and not the same people; we need the injection of fresh blood/ideas to keep this Association on the high roads.

To my successor I wish all the best and I will endeavor to help that person where I can and if needed.

Thanking you all for this opportunity.

Chris Leeder Secretary

Treasurer’s Report for 2015

Mr Patron, Madam President, Ladies & Gentlemen, I am pleased to present the Financial Statements of the Association for the year ended 30th November 2015. There were a number of positive outcomes in the finances of our Association during 2015:

we received funding as a result of an election pledge from the current Federal Government that allowed us to replace our lights on our artificial surfaces with state of the art, remotely controlled lighting. Apart from improving the lighting of our fields, these energy efficient lights also reduced our electricity consumption and therefore our energy costs in 2015,

through a generous donation from our Patron, Mayor Paul Pisasale, we were able to terrace the mound adjacent to our clubhouse and concrete an access path between our artificial fields, an excellent improvement to our sporting complex, and

we hosted two state titles during 2015, with the Men’s Masters weekend takings, in particular, contributing significantly to our excellent result in our Bar and Canteen operations for the year.

There is one negative aspect of our financials that I should unfortunately draw to your attention though. While we returned an operating profit for the first time in a number of years, our two main income items, Game Fees and Training Fees in aggregate have declined in the last 3 years. While we have kept increases in these fees to a minimum each year, total income from these fees has reduced by 4% in each year i.e. 8% since 2013. Obviously our financials reflect what we are aware of - our club player numbers have been decreasing, and this is a trend we need to reverse. While recruitment has been a focus of the RAP team in recent years, I believe that all of us need to contribute more on how we can recruit and retain more players, particularly males. When I became your Treasurer over 20 years ago, Ipswich Hockey’s motto was ‘The Game that Grows’, your input into seeing our Association grow again is much anticipated. I would like to thank your Assistant Treasurer, Julie Eleison for her continued valuable assistance during 2015. I would also again like to acknowledge John & Una Cushing who continued to assist us in various receipting and banking of funds during the year.

Indoor Co-ordinator’s Report 2015

The 2015/16 Season of Indoor Hockey commenced in early October, with 14 junior teams in three

divisions. This season saw a player increase of 36% over the previous season. Due to time

restrictions, we remained at Redbank Indoor Facility for this season.

Representative Indoor included one team in each of U13 boys and girls and U15 girls and two

teams in U15 boys, all competing at the State Indoor Challenges. Some Ipswich players also

participated in these Queensland Team Challenges for other teams. Our U13 girls came 3rd and

the U13 boys came 9th, U15 girls came 3rd and No 1 U15 boys (Thunder) came 7th and the No 2

team (Hurricanes) came 11th.

As a result of great performances at these Challenges, a number of our players were named in

Queensland teams. Named in the two U13 girls teams, Jordn Office and Talicia Canty (playing for

Brisbane) with Madeline Denny shadow, U 13 Boys had Matthew West selected into one of the

teams. U15 boys had Caleb Davies selected into the team with Jake Thornton shadow. Qld has

done very well at the National tournament and the U15 boys won the Bronze medal. U13 is

currently being played. Umpires to these tournaments included Natalie and Bradley Walker to

U13s, both achieving community Indoor umpiring, Natalie and Kyle Jackson attended U15 boys

and Daniel Westphal U15 girls.

Thank you to managers, Michelle Office (U13 girls), Steven Profke (U13 & U15 boys Thunder) and

Kellie Moran (U15 Girls) and Suzie Hey (U15 boys Hurricanes). Thanks you to our coaches, Prue

Armstrong (U13 girls), Margie Butta (U13 boys and U15 girls), Blake Douglas (U15 boys Hurricanes)

and Jan Walker (U15 boys Thunder). Thank you to Eden Jacket who came out to all trainings as

selector.

Recently seven people from Ipswich Indoor attended the inaugural Level 1 Indoor hockey coaching

course held at Kedron. This was a very valuable day and will assist with indoor coaching in the

future.

The domestic competition is travelling well with all teams securing points. The three divisions are

competitive. There have been nine junior umpires regularly umpiring each week. The season

recommences on the 29th January, with the grand finals on the 4th March.

We were successful in gaining a grant for $7500 to put towards new running boards and trolleys.

Regional Coaching Director’s Report 2015

Season 2015 has been very busy for Ipswich Hockey; many achievements have been made by the Association, hockey community and our athletes which leads to an exciting 2016 season.

May 2015 saw a change in Coaching Directors at Ipswich. I’d like to take this opportunity to thank Neil for all of his time and dedication to the Association and wish him all the very best in his new coaching business. After competing for Australia at the Masters Trans-Tasman Test Series in Melbourne I found myself embraced by an amazing hockey community that have been helping me settle in every step of the way. I’m grateful for an Executive Committee that is very supportive and know that change is something that is happening constantly in our great game and community.

This season has seen another strong participation level in Hook in2 Hockey U5, U7 & U9s with our numbers sitting at 198 children; we are looking to grow these numbers during the 2016 season. A massive thank-you must go to the clubs’ Hook in2 Hockey coaching staff who are teaching and inspiring our future stars of the game. It’s great to walk amongst the children on a Saturday morning and see them learning new skills and having FUN!! Towards the latter half of the U9 season, umpires were introduced focusing on the basic rules of feet, height of the stick, and the number of athletes in the tackle. With this introduction it allowed the coaches to focus on coaching the children and getting them to use all of the field (width) and the skills that they had learnt in the first half of the season. Thank you to Bernadette Gotting for making sure that we had umpires each week and giving our young up and coming umpires the opportunities to gain confidence, learn more rules and about themselves as umpires.

A big thank you to Karen Dolan and Tracey Doyle for all of their time and hard work that went into Carnival day for all of the U5 , 7 & 9 children. Dress up day was themed as “Princess and Pirates” which saw children and coaches dress up, play games, walk the plank and enjoy the fun atmosphere after the games were completed.

With our U9 numbers strong and growing we have seen some of our U9 boys have opportunities to play up in the J2 grade and learn some new skills and make some new friends. It has also provided leadership roles for the senior J2 boys who have helped the younger athletes out on the field. With these strong numbers for both boys and girls in the U9 groups this will help to strengthen the numbers in the J2, J1, E, D, & C Grades for the 2016 season. Many of our J1 boys & C Grade girls had the opportunity to play up and gain some experience in the senior grades, this exposure was/is very valuable for all of the athletes and is a step in the right direction for the clubs and Ipswich hockey.

2015 saw Hancocks Men and Women win the A Grade finals with Norths (men) and Wests (women) being runners up. Congratulations to all the clubs that played in finals and we look forward to seeing you all play again in the 2016 season with the anticipation of new members and growth within all of the grades.

We hosted an array of hockey in the 2015 season; Southern Cross U18 Women, U12 QLD School Boys and Girls Championships, QLD State Championship Men’s Masters (40s & 50). During the Schoolboys & girls Championships we were able to conduct a GK clinic for all of the teams, having Cade Banditt, Emily Whitheyman-Crump and Matthew West there to assist the young goalkeepers and pass on their goal keeping knowledge which was excellent. We were also able to run a Level 1 refresh course for the coaching staff that attended the Championships. Both the GK clinics and Level 1 refresh course were very valuable and something that we can consider offering in the future when we host these championships.

Congratulations to all Coaches, Managers, and Selectors on a successful season, not just for Rep teams but club teams also. Your hard work and dedication to our athletes is greatly appreciated and without people like you there would be no future for our athletes.

Development training took on a new look at the end of the season exposing more athletes to developments sessions and coaching staff. Development for athletes 11 to 21 was conducted, getting back to basics and making sure that we had a really good base to work with. They were exposed to different types of coaching styles, fitness sessions, fitness testing and skills testing which is took them out of their comfort zone and allowed them to grow as athletes. This is something that I will look to expand in the 2016 season, making sure that all of our juniors get the opportunity to be involved in some form of development training. The more we show them that it’s about them and their hockey, the more likely they will continue to come back keen and eager to learn.

Reflecting on the 2015 season, the Ipswich Hockey Community has embraced change and achieved many great things; athletes of all ages representing at all levels, hosting QLD and School championships, conducting one of the largest Hook in2 Hockey Seasons, growth in participation numbers, upgrades to the facilities, and development training. It has been a very busy and exciting season for me as I learn more and more about this amazing hockey community and the talented young athletes that we have.

Look out 2016! Ipswich Hockey Association is going to fil you with growth, results, achievements and lots of FUN. Many thanks for the opportunity Sam Spry Regional Coaching Director

Records Secretary’s Report – 2015 Season

Ladies and Gentlemen:

On behalf of the members of the Tech Committee I present this report for the 2015 Season. There were several changes implemented this past season and it is hoped that the majority of Clubs were happy with these changes.

Reflecting back on the number of members registered for the 2014 Season and the hope that our membership is growing it is a little sad to say that we only increased the 2015 Season membership by four members. In total there were 1109 members registered for the 2015 Season. Across the numbers there appears to be an increase in the junior membership, however this is due to the fact that Hockey Queensland increased the age limit for juniors playing seniors from 17 years of age to 18 years of age. There is a slight increase but not as significant as was hoped for. It is a little disappointing to see that the Hook in2 Hockey numbers have decreased and I am hopeful that 2016 Season will see a resurgence in these numbers.

Our team nominations have also stayed close to the same as the 2014 Season, with 26 Men’s and 42 Women’s teams nominated. The exception for the 2015 Season was the increase in the J2 Boys Grade where seven teams participated compared to six teams in 2014 Season. Whilst, the C Grade Girls did increase by one team, this was due to the number of D Grade players from 2014 Season moving into the higher grade.

However, I must say that the co-operation between Clubs in regards to their members participating for other Clubs in the various grades was very much appreciated. To see Clubs working together to ensure that competitions remained viable was wonderful. Whilst, this co-operation also ensured that players were retained. A huge thank-you to those Clubs concerned.

A change of format for the A Grade competition was implemented with some games on a Friday evening and the games for both Saturday and Sunday moved to later timeslots. The feedback received to date indicates that Club are happy with these changes. However, as usual I believe these changes need to be trailed for another season for the full impact to be felt by the Clubs.

Another change made was the process in which Player of the Year votes were allocated. At this stage the feedback indicates that some changes are required and this will be another work in progress for the 2016 Season.

Yet again the Combined Competition with Toowoomba for the A Grade teams provided that extra variety for the players. This season saw the A Grade Women have the honour of winning the title outright. This has not happened for a number of years and therefore was very pleasing for Ipswich Hockey. Congratulations to Wests A Grade Women on this win. Whilst, this season saw the men have a drawn result. Congratulations to Hancock Brothers A Grade Men and NR A Grade Men.

As usual there were challenges placed before the Committee, however with perseverance and patience these challenges were handled and met.

The various results of club fixtures are listed on the pages that follow.

State Championships Whilst the 2015 Season did not see any wins for Ipswich Hockey teams at State Championships it is still pleasing to see that we are sending teams away to these Championships. Attendance at these Championships can only assist our players to continue to develop their skills and playing abilities.

This past season did however see Ipswich nominate three Men’s Masters Teams in the State Championships. Which in turn lead to several of these players being selected for State teams. Our teams finished as follows:-

Super League (South West) Super League (South West) Men’s 5th Women’s 4th

A huge thank-you to the members of the Tech Committee for your assistance and guidance over the past season. Whilst, we had several challenges placed before us at the start of the season with the assistance of Janette and Heather these challenges were managed. I therefore offer my sincere thanks to both Janette and Heather for your advice, guidance and most of all support at those trying times. Special thanks also to Margret for going the extra mile and entering the majority of the playing records onto the database. This assistance certainly provided me with the breathing space to complete the other necessary duties. It has been a pleasure working alongside Heather, Janette, Margret and Tracey this past season.

Best of luck to all for the 2016 Season. Heres’s hoping that the player numbers increase and the work undertaken by all Clubs is rewarded.
