2 | CAIRNS HOCKEY ANNUAL REPORT

HISTORY In 2017, Cairns Hockey celebrates 90 years. Cairns Hockey was originally established to manage and administer hockey in the Cairns region. It has grown into a vibrant hockey association with four clubs: Brothers, Saints, Souths and Stingers supporting hockey where possible through Far North Queensland. This is reflected by a strengthening relationship with Tablelands’ teams (who are now participating in the local competition) and the evolution of increased social responsibility programs through the Association’s rich history with Hockey Queensland RIHP (has developed into the delivery of an internationally recognised Indigenous hockey support program for girls living in remote and regional areas of FNQ and the Torres Strait called ‘Aspire to the be Deadly’.

FACILITIES Cairns Regional Hockey Centre, 365 Lake Street, Cairns, 4870. Facilities include two water-based, artificial pitches (with approved lighting) over seven hectares. Constructed to FIH specifications. Up to six well-conditioned support grass fields Location - North Cairns; 2kms from the airport and 4kms from the CBD Clubhouse and Member Amenities - AV facilities, warm-up areas, parking, spectator seating and viewing mounts, change rooms, canteen and security fencing. Cairns Hockey has its home, alongside Tobruk Pool and Cairns Tennis Centre at the exciting Cairns North Sporting Precinct. Plans are well underway for a facility upgrade in 2017 and 2018.

MEMBERSHIP, COMPETITION AND PATHWAYS In 2016, hockey delivered recruitment programs with increased awareness of the sport. This led to over 4000 participants involved in school, ‘Come and Try’ and other community programs. Cairns hockey runs a full-field winter competition, a modified summer hockey competition and has also relaunched an indoor competition. An estimated 1600 people (male and female of all ages) participated in the many and various competitions from Hook in2 Hockey to Masters. In 2016 the competition was open to regional teams from Atherton Tablelands and South Cape in all competition grades

In 2016, over 300 players and coaches represented Cairns across regional and state competitions. Additionally, almost 60 coaches, managers and players represented Queensland at national championships and 9 of our Cairns Players were selected to represent Australian in teams and national programs including one HOCKEY WORLD MASTERS CHAMPION.

Over 25 umpires and technical officials from Cairns Hockey officiated in regional, state and national championships.

Also of note, Cairns Hockey is currently running ‘out of season’ Academy Programs with over 220 players and coaches involved to continue to advance skill development and support the local, regional, state competition opportunities and pathways.

CAIRNS HOCKEY ANNUAL REPORT | 3

Cairns Hockey members, Stakeholders, Supporters and Board came together in December 2015 with a committed intention to undertake the drafting, developing and delivery of a new strategic plan with fresh ideas all designed to SECURE THE FUTURE OF CAIRNS HOCKEY. This was community driven resulting with a new plan in place – there is a strong sense that this plan has overwhelming community support and the rollout and delivery is managed by the Cairns Hockey Board.

Through-out this report SECURING THE FUTURE will be an underlying theme woven through a tapestry of images and narrative which highlight the 2016 year acknowledging and celebrating its achievements while highlighting this is the start of an exciting journey with much to do To SECURE OUR FUTURE.

CAIRNS HOCKEY ANNUAL REPORT | 5

2016 CAIRNS HOCKEY PRESIDENT’S REPORTThe 2016 year was a very successful season and congratulations must go to all our members, staff and volunteers for delivering a great year for Hockey in Cairns. The enormous commitment offered by our members, our volunteers, our supporters and our staff I believe is what sets us apart from many current sporting organizations. I thought there was a lot to do in 2015 but quite surprisingly, 2016 was even busier.

There were many highlights that show cased our association to be vibrant, advancing and successful. These included:

• The decision to expand the CHA Junior Competition to Pazutti Park

• The increased team numbers in our S Grade competition

• Hosting the Men’s State Open Championships and coming within a breathe of being the MEN’S STATE OPEN CHAMPIONS in 2016

• Winning Hawthorn Shield

• Greater collaboration and engagement with our Clubs and Members

• Commitment for 2.7 million dollars to support capital improvements across the facility

• Greatest number of players, coaches and officials representing Cairns

• Ric Charlesworth AO visit and coaching clinics

• International Success with the Aspire to be Deadly Hockey program and the Partnership with Hockey Queensland

• Largest Academy program since its inception

• Re-Introduction of Indoor Hockey

• Strengthening relationship with Atherton Tableland Hockey Association

• Internal organizational restructure driving successful strategic outcomes

• Presentation of strong financial statements supporting a strong future

I also take this opportunity to recognize our great selfless volunteer base. Without each and every-one of you offering your skills, time, experience and passion to Cairns Hockey, we would not be in the position we are today. Our Competitions Committee, Facility Management Team, Finance Committee, Judiciary, Indoor and Events Committee members all volunteers and all giving a great deal to Cairns Hockey.

I would like to sincerely thank and acknowledge the great support we receive from our Patron, the Honourable Warren Entsch, Member for Leichhardt. Warren has a long-standing commitment to advancing Hockey in the region and his passion to ensure Cairns Hockey has a strong financial commitment for facility improvements and the Aspire to be Deadly program is second to none.

Cairns Hockey is strengthening our relationships with the State Government through Department of Sport and Recreation and I thank them for their support in 2016.

I would like to acknowledge and thank Mayor Cr Bob Manning OAM and the Cairns Regional Council for their ongoing support to Cairns Hockey securing a 20year lease over the facility and working with them to secure State Championships in 2018 – State Under 18 Women’s Championships and in 2019 – State Over 40 and Over 50 Men’s Masters Championships. Cairns Hockey and the Cairns Regional Council are also partners in the Great Barrier Reef Masters Games scheduled for May 2017.

To all our sponsors and member supporters I thank you for the contributions you make to Cairns Hockey as you are all key to our continuing success.

Congratulations to all those players, coaches, officials and umpires who had the honour of representing Cairns Hockey in 2016. To our athletes, coaches, officials and umpires that attained Queensland honours, what a great effort and finally for those who attained national honours in 2016, I am very proud of you all. Ultimately playing Hockey is first and foremost about joining

6 | CAIRNS HOCKEY ANNUAL REPORT

with friends and enjoying an activity that is challenging and is fun and if this pathway led you to achieve more in 2016, I hope you are still having fun.

Our Events Committee delivered a successful Men’s Open State Championships and with the assistance of School Sport delivered a highly successful Under 12 National School Hockey Championship. Thanks to Vicki Sparks for promoting Cairns Hockey and supporting Cairns as the venue for this tournament.

Congratulations to Brothers who were Club Champions in 2016 which is a great achievement. Thanks to all those who enjoyed the social Summer 6’s, a special mention to Peter Swain and his Indoor Committee who drove the re-introduction of Indoor Hockey and a sincere thanks to all those Atherton and Tableland players, coaches, officials and supporters who travel regularly to be part of the Cairns Hockey competitions.

It is anticipated Cairns Hockey will receipt over 1 million dollars in revenue in 2017 which reflects the growth in our organization. Our staff are very important to the ongoing success and advancement across all aspects of our association. There have been some changes across the last 12 months and I welcome Rance, Rodney and Megan into our Hockey community. The coaching and development department of our organization has undergone some of the greatest change led by David McNeil and supported by Wesley, Matt and Jess and I thank them all for embracing these challenges. Janice‘s role has also changed and we will start 2017 with a fresh approach and a strong sense of purpose. I acknowledge the contribution of Ray, Penny and the canteen workers, Brian behind the bar and Margaret who is behind the scenes assisting us in keeping the facility cleaned. I thank all the staff past and present for their contribution to our success.

The Aspire to be Deadly Program gained International recognition in 2016 and with it Cairns Hockey. Cairns Hockey supported Julie, Wesley and David attending one of the biggest International Sport for Good conferences and Awards in London and I thank everyone involved who contributed and made this opportunity possible. The recognition this gave Cairns Hockey is continuing and so is the benefits flowing from being involved including providing the highest quality of professional development to our staff.

Coordinating everything about Cairns Hockey is our Operations Manager Julie McNeil and I take this opportunity to say thank you for Julie’s contribution across all aspects of this organization. From driving the increased collaboration and engagement with clubs through the regular President’s meetings, to the information dissemination through the web site and face book pages, to broadening and strengthening our relationships with governments at all levels, seeking and obtaining funding and overseeing our advancing governance and best practices, overviewing all levels of the competition, operating budgets and providing support to our staff, to managing the organizational change and extensive restructuring of our accounts and then finding time to manage the Aspire to be Deadly Program and does so in a way that gained the program International recognition not only to the Aspire to be Deadly Program but to Cairns Hockey itself. Thank you from all of us involved at Cairns Hockey, you are very special.

Finally, I thank my fellow Board Members for making my time as President a rewarding one. I leave this organization with a sense of accomplishment, a sense of achievement and a sense that it is in a stronger position now than when I came onto the Board. This takes a team effort and it was a privileged to be part of such a great team.

I wish the organization on-going success and look forward to seeing the future take shape in my new capacity as a player, a parent, a volunteer and a very proud member of Cairns Hockey.

Regards

Scott Brown President Cairns Hockey Association

REPORT CAIRNS HOCKEY - COACHING AND DEVELOPMENT DEPARTMENTThe current reporting year has presented numerous challenges and opportunities to the Coaching Department within Cairns Hockey and although not all mentioned, a brief summary of the year follows.

STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS

Teams performed reasonably well at State Championships and as mentioned elsewhere in this report great numbers achieved selection in Hockey Queensland Teams/Squads.

As is always the case, each year or for that matter each Championship or even game highlights areas of deficiencies and these have been forwarded to Clubs and Coaches through either Championship debriefs or the on-line Coaching Workshops.

Greater consideration was given to athletes regarding transport to and from State Championships in 2016 and I would like to take this opportunity to express my thanks to the CHA Administration for their assistance and understanding in this matter.

The 2017 Calendar presents even greater challenges regarding transport arrangements with Championships scheduled in the following areas;GladstoneMaryboroughRockhamptonTweed BorderToowoomba

Cairns Hockey continues to punch well above its weight being represented at all state titles including;

EVENT TEAMS MALE TEAMS FEMALE

OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP 1 1

UNDER 18 1 1

UNDER 15 2 2

UNDER 13 2 3

UNDER 11 Hawthorn Shield only 2 2

Representative program in 2016 provided opportunities for over 300 players, coaches, managers and officials to represent Cairns. Over 60 plus players, coaches, managers and officials to represent Queensland 9 Cairns representatives achieved Australian Honours.

Congratulations to all.

PROGRAMS – ABOVE AND BEYOND

UNDER 18 BOYS TRAINING CAMP

February was host to a combined Cairns/Townsville training camp to assist athletes prepare for Hockey Queensland Trials. The combined camp provided athletes from both centres quality opposition in both training sessions and games and I am sure assisted all concerned at the Under 18 trials.

RIC CHARLESWORTH COACHING CLINICS

During Ric Charlesworth’s visit to Cairns the following workshops were organised and well attended;

i) Junior coaching clinic

ii) Senior coaching clinic

iii) Coach the coaches workshop

iv) Elite players coaching clinic

All the above were well received and information gained was valuable. I would also like to pass on the thanks to the Senior players who volunteered their time to assist with the Coach the Coaches workshop. It can be rather intimidating being coached by one of the best in the world and they handled themselves well.

UNDER 11 DEVELOPMENT TOUR – KARUMBA

To assist in the Development of our junior players, more from a travel and cultural exchange point of view, two teams travelled to the Karumba Hockey Festival in December. From a hockey -specific experience, it will be some time before we can reasonably gauge the influence of this tour. That been said the benefits to the athletes regarding the in’s and out’s of team travel, time away from parents, facing new challenges, this trip and the program as a whole was a major success. I have no doubt the athletes will benefit from this Tour for many years to come. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the following for their assistance.

• Wes Ferns Tournament Convenor

• Lisa Fatnowna Manager

• Jess Fatnowna Manager

• Rhylee Pendrigh Coach

• Peter Sceresini Coach

• Matt Cook Tour Manager

TONI CRONK GOAL KEEPING CLINICS

Post season numerous Cairns goalkeepers were put through their paces with International and previous Hockeyroo Toni Cronk. It was great to have such a highly rated keeper in Cairns to conduct these clinics and we very much appreciate Toni’s offer of assistance.

JANE CLAXTON COACHING CLINICS

Just when you thought it was all over, CHA are lucky enough to secure the services of current Hockeyroo and Olympian Jane Claxton to conduct some coaching clinics early December 2016.

CAIRNS HOCKEY ANNUAL REPORT | 9

I appreciate the assistance of Tiarna Gordon in the organising of these clinics and look forward to positive outcomes.

CAIRNS REGIONAL HOCKEY ACADEMY

Once again off season programs are conducted in the following age groups;

Under 11 Open Invitation

Under 13 Open Invitation

Under 15 Identified Athletes

Under 18 Identified Athletes ( Boy’s program will commence early 2017)

Over 200 junior athletes will receive state of the art coaching during this 6 week training block. This program provides valuable time for the CHA Coaching personel to supply hands on coaching to a wide variety of players.

SUMMARY

There will be a number of changes to the Roles and Responsibilities of the CHA Coaching Department in 2017 and I welcome this positive line of thinking and approach by Julie McNeil, Operations Manager and the Board of CHA. I would also like to express my sincere thanks to the other members of the CHA Coaching Staff for their valuable input, honest appraisals and dedication to the job.

Thank you, Wes Ferns, Jess Fatnowna and Matt Cook

We are entering exciting times moving forward and I look forward to the challenges the future holds.

INNOVATIVE AND HISTORY MAKING PATHWAYS PROGRAMS - CAIRNS HOCKEY - UNDER 11 MUDDIES AND BARRAS JOURNEY - HIGHLIGHTS AND ASSESSMENTS OF IDENTIFIED OUTCOMES

Cairns Hockey has been looking at ways to involve the youngest of our players and provide unique opportunities to support education, personal growth and advancing good choices in a fun and simple program. The ability to link with the ASPIRE TO BE DEADLY Program is a huge bonus and one that the Cairns Hockey community wanted to support and link mainstream hockey development with remote hockey delivery and align and support each programs outcomes. Outcomes identified for the Cairns Hockey Under 11 Development Tour

(i) Create a program that assisted young people to adjust outside of their comfort zone

(ii) Create an experience that was safe but assisted in personal growth

(iii) Deliver opportunities to experience new things and learn how to adapt

(iv) Assist in the advancement of their hockey journey

(v) Meet new friends and understand team building

(vi) Support leadership opportunities

Due to the age of the group and the location of the program the planning was critical

- Initial planning recognized that this needed a combination of youth and experience and maturity

- The program also needed to align with ASPIRE TO THE DEADLY anduse the respect and recognition this program has with the remote communities

- The progrm needed to be developed to support the remote hockey program and had to align with it.

- Logisitcs needed to be very detailed

- Involvement with parents was critical

- Information needed to be simple and clear

- Needed to be affordable

- Hockey needed to at a level that woud challenge the Cairns teams

Matt Cook from Cairns Hockey managed this program and it is fortunate that Matt has experience in remote hockey delivery and the understanding of the unique challenges this experience gave him provided insight and appreciation which reflected in the planning and preparation.Cairns Hockey Board embraced this opportunity supported by a significant number of Cairns Hockey staff.

12 | CAIRNS HOCKEY ANNUAL REPORT

Cairns Hockey acknowledges and recognizes that the role of the umpire and technical official within our game and competition has many challenges. We take this opportunity to thank all our volunteers who take on these roles. In 2016 there was a recognition that Cairns Hockey and our clubs needed to be proactive in providing support and assistance and in 2017 CHA will be forming a sub committee within the Competitions and this sub committee will have the role to continue the coordination and advancement of our umpires and technical officials. CHA staff will be available to provide additional support to this sub committee with the view of ensuring education, mentoring and pathway support for umpires and technical officials is prioritized moving forward.

REPORTCAIRNS HOCKEY – UMPIRING AND TECHNICAL OFFICERS

“SECURING THE FUTURE”

This year I had the opportunity of coordinating the allocations of Technical Officials for A & B Grade matches. A meeting held at the beginning of the season saw a good number of volunteers from most Clubs volunteering to assist in officiating these matches. This was due to the National Men’s Masters tournament here last year.

The group of Technical Officials supported each other throughout the season especially in times when family or illness prevented the fulfilment of their allocated duty.

Communication with the Technical Staff was mainly through emails as not all were able to attend meetings due to playing/ working commitments. This worked well and having a single person coordinating who was contactable either by phone or email allowed time for changes to be made when necessary.

Moving forward to secure a professional standard of Technical Officials we need to support and encourage those who volunteer. This year two of our Technical Officials were awarded their Queensland Junior Badge at the Open Men’s Tournament. Also we had two receive their HA Level One Technical Official Accreditation earlier in the year.

Areas that can be improved on are in the bullet points below:

• clarification of operating the time clocks

• The reserve tech to notify if they are not available on the date they have been allocated allowing time for a replacement to be organized.

• Meeting/s prior to Finals for all tech’s to understand the format being played

Thank you to all those who volunteered this year and we look forward to your continued support.

REPORTCAIRNS HOCKEY – OPERATIONS MANAGER SECURING OUR FUTURE

It is with a measured sense of pride and accomplishment that I present the 2016 Operations Report on behalf of Cairns Hockey. Securing our Future has been the platform our Board, our Staff and our Members have committed to build in 2016 and it is pleasing to report that well- constructed and firm foundations are almost completed. We follow how this has been transitioned from conversations and collaborations at Board, Committee, Club, Member and Stakeholder levels into practical implementation and programs all designed to advance Cairns Hockey towards the future in a positive and managed way.

The members, stakeholders, partners and supporters of Cairns Hockey committed to the creation, development and advancement of 4year strategy to become Australia’s Leading Hockey Region by 2020. The plan was finalized in January 2016 and Cairns Hockey Board is very proud to report against the first year of the plan and integral to moving forward together was a commitment to

- Increased stakeholder engagement

- Increased communication

- Increased commitment to support club development at all levels

The Board of CHA recognized that to drive these strategic objectives to Securing Our Future, a restructure of the organization was required and undertook this in a professionally managed way. Not all decisions will be supported unanimously but managing change is as important as the change itself and CHA has recognized that organization restructure was a key element of building a strong platform to SECURE OUR FUTURE.

All the frame working, the plans, policies and programs are designed for a singular purpose - SECURING THE FUTURE FOR CAIRNS HOCKEY AND TROPICAL FAR NORTH QUEENSLAND. Aligning with the direction and the stakeholders in the community at large is an important link to ensure we are all travelling in the same direction in the recognition that hockey has a significant role to play to support the whole community as it tries to deliver the best to its members.

DECEMBER 2015 Cairns Hockey through a significant collaboration of its members committed to the vision that as a hockey community it wants to be Australia’s leading hockey region by 2020.

To drive this vision, Cairns Hockey believes it is required to “EMBODY THE KEY PRINCIPLES OF SPORT IN SOCIETY, CREATING A CULTURE THAT INSPIRES, EDUCATED AND DEVELOPS HOCKEY INCLUSIVE OF COMPETITIVE AND SOCIAL PROGRAMS IN A SAFE AND FUN ENVIROMENT ACROSS CAIRNS AND FAR NORTH QUEENSLAND”

The plan was completed and can be found in full detail at http://www.cairnshockey.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2016/02/CAIRNS-HOCKEY-PLAN-ON-A-PAGE-SUMMARY-DRAFT-1.pdf

Cairns Hockey understood that it was essential to accurately and practically measure and evaluate our progress because it is only when we critically assess what we have done against what it takes to achieve our outcomes and objectives can we be sure we are SECURING OUR FUTURE – the future of hockey in Cairns Tropical Far North Queensland.

My report is designed is to share with our members, stakeholders and supporters what has been done in year 1 of the 4year plan and its impact.

ENGAGING STAKEHOLDERS AND PARTNERSHIPS ACROSS THE REGION

Building and strengthening relationships and partnerships is an essential tool to drive Cairns Hockey towards sustained growth and development. Highlighting innovative programing is crucial both to celebrate the achievements with members and promoting the advantages and benefits that are gained by investing in the region.

BENEFITS TO CAIRNS HOCKEY • Strengthening partnerships with STAR AND 4CA and local and regional media partnerships

• Advancing relationships with Australian Government, Cairns Regional Council and Queensland Government

• New partnerships with BDO North Queensland and Ramsey Health to align with community and health outcomes

• Reinforcing local support with active collaborations across schools, hockey clubs and local businesses

• Celebrating these relationships at the Ric Charlesworth Dinner in 2016

24 | CAIRNS HOCKEY ANNUAL REPORT

HIGHLIGHTING ASPIRE TO BE DEADLY

Some partnerships are built over many years and over 10 years ago, Cairns Hockey made a committed decision to invest in a partnership with Hockey Queensland RIHP that allowed the hockey community to be invested in driving positive social change through sport and to assist and support some of the more disadvantaged groups within Far North Queensland. This commitment is built into the Cairns Hockey Strategic Plan and is the foundation upon which our social responsibility policies are driven. In 2016 Cairns Hockey Aspire continued its delivery with-

• Increasing the number of schools and communities ASPIRE TO BE DEADLY is delivered to.

• Largest Karumba Hockey Event in its history and stronger programs across Torres Strait Islands

• Exceeded Annual Funding Outcomes across the identified region of Cairns and FNQ including-

I. increasing school attendance

II. recruiting indigenous parents to support the hockey program

III. steady increase in participation number

IV. delivery of supporting mentor programs

V. delivery of 7 workshops supporting program outcomes

VI. supporting indigenous participation in Cairns Hockey pathway programs

VII. building and strengthening of partnerships across the whole of the community

VIII. expansion of hockey as part of the Tagai Sport Awards and introduction of hockey into secondary school curriculum

PROMOTING THE OPPORTUNITY AND INCREASING AWARENESS FOR CAIRNS HOCKEY

The building and strengthening of partnerships promote the opportunities and increase the awareness of the positive benefits being involved with Cairns Hockey. Some examples in 2016 include

1. This recognition was acknowledged by The Honourable WARREN ENTSCH MHA in his speech to the Australian Parliament

2. The Queensland State Government through the Deputy Premier correspondence to Cairns Hockey offering acknowledgment and support

3. The Cairns Regional Council acknowledging the program and promoting its benefits across its platforms

4. Strong support from Cairns Hockey stakeholders through information sharing on web site and social media platforms.

5. Creation of cloud fundraising opportunities

IN CONCLUSION

Planning is well underway for the 2017 Year and it looks very much like exciting times are ahead. The organisational restructure will be implemented with changes in roles across CHA designed to better meets our current needs.

Communication is an area we strive to improve upon. The Cairns Hockey website and the revamping of the Cairns Hockey You Tube channel and Facebook page has significantly improved the communication processes to our members. We will continue to work to facilitate improved communications at all levels across all platforms.

Something very exciting to share, communicate and promote is the 90th birthday celebration for Cairns Hockey in 2017. There is some very special planning underway to celebrate this great milestone for the sport in the region. It is also an opportunity to recognise the past as we secure our future and there are several special projects planned across 2017 to highlight this historic occasion.

The Cairns Hockey Board Members should be recognised for their hard work and commitment to advancing the Cairns Hockey Association. Your Board members offer their time, their skill and their passion freely to address the challenges hockey in this region face. Acknowledgement and recognition must go to the retiring President who invested significantly in Cairns Hockey. His passion for Cairns Hockey ensured the organisation was able to progress despite many challenges.

There are many people who give so much to make hockey strong. Whether you are associated with your club, a representative team, a voluntary committee, a sponsor or partner, the contribution you provide makes a difference each and every day. Thank you all.

Securing the Future for Hockey can only be achieved with the assistance and support of committed and selfless volunteers, strong sponsors and supporters across the business and government sectors and professional and our hard-working staff that offer so much to this organisation over and above their employment obligation. You will see from the contents of this Annual Report that Cairns Hockey has been very busy and achieved a great deal in 2016. We hope this is the beginning of an exciting journey. Thank you all for supporting me in this role. There are challenges ahead and there is much still to be achieved and I look forward to the future we can advance together.
