Patron’s Message

Ipswich’s reputation as a sporting city continues to be enhanced by many organisations including the Ipswich Hockey Association. Since 1931 hockey has been an integral part of sport in our community. Every successful sporting club relies on the strong support of volunteers. As Patron I again urge supporters to step up and play a part in the on-going success of Ipswich Hockey Association. It takes a whole community approach by dedicated sports officials to make the Association the success it is. I’d like to thank everyone who played a role in the Association during 2016 for its dedicated service and pay tribute to President, Margret Mantell, and the entire management committee and volunteers, who do a tremendous job co-ordinating the hockey season. The strength of the Ipswich Hockey Association and its past achievements would not be possible without their hard work. Ipswich’s hockey facilities are some of the best in south east Queensland, where our 10 local registered clubs participate in fixtures, and where each year our City welcomes teams from around the south east, as well as the state, to compete. This is not only fantastic for the hockey community, but also brings a myriad of benefits to the wider Ipswich region, with talented players, their families and friends visiting our city. On behalf of Councillors and residents I would like to thank the current committee on a great 2016 season and to wish the incoming President and committee all the best for 2017 as you lead the association forward. Mayor Paul Pisasale City of Ipswich

President’s Report 2016

With another season behind us, we have had time to reflect on all that was the 2016 season, take a depth breath and start planning for the 2017 season. For me, the highlight of the 2016 season would have to be the reintroduction of three junior boys’ grades. This is proof that all of the hard work by Karen and her RAP team is starting to reap rewards. The standard of the skills displayed by the boys in the newly formed J3 competition was also evidence that our Hook in2 Hockey program is on the right track and that the work being done by clubs is paying dividends. Congratulations to you all. There can be no doubt that the 2016 season did not get off to the start that we would have hoped for with the Men’s A Grade competition reduced to three teams. But as is the case when any obstacle is placed in our path, there is nothing to be gained by just complaining about the situation; it needs to serve as a jolt we sometimes need to look at how we can do things better. And this certainly happened thanks again to the RAP team who held a number of meetings throughout the season, conducted a survey etc. and we are all now working tirelessly to address the issues identified at these meetings. But we need YOUR help. Ideas and suggestions are great but can only be implemented with the help of volunteers willing to give of their time to assist. While there was much focus on the men’s A Grade situation, we must not lose sight of the fact that this was but one hiccup while there were so many more positives to the season which far outweigh this one negative. One of these positive outcomes was that the Men’s Combined Comp with Toowoomba was expanded to two rounds which received positive feedback from those involved. Our Rep teams continue to perform extremely well with many of our players recognised through selection in state teams and squads, our Hook in2 Hockey program continues to be very successful and enjoyed by those who participate, club fixtures ran smoothly and we had great finals (except for the weather on a couple of days) and our Indoor Hockey program continues to grow with the introduction of a senior social competition; to name a few. Of course, hand in hand with these successes go the wonderful and amazing people who make up the Ipswich Hockey family and who have all worked together to achieve the things we have. So a very special and sincere thank you to everyone for the part you have played, from our dedicated Executive team (Janette, Tracey, Mark, Peter, Julie & Paul) to our Coaching Director (Sam), the Technical Committee (Lesley, Heather, Tracey & June), Umpires Committee (Robert, Paul, Bernie & Rob), RAP team (in particular Karen, Pauline, Leanne, Tracey, Jan, Lesley, Janette & Heather), Indoor Committee (Jan and her team), Judicial Panel (Denis, Heather, Amanda and the club deputies), our amazing volunteers (especially our BBQers extraordinaire – Heather & Phillip, Lyn & John), our wonderful Sponsors, Justin Thomas (our invaluable Legal Adviser) and to all our Rep coaches, managers & players, club officials and to our players. Your contribution to our great sport is very much appreciated. Looking ahead, 2017 promises to be just as exciting. We will be hosting two State Championships – Secondary Schoolgirls (25-28 May) and the Under 15 Girls (16-19 September). Planning is already underway for our Hook in2 Hockey Theme Day (15 July) where this year we will be going ‘Out of this World’, Junior Carnival Day (12 August), the Gala Awards Function (1 September) and so much more.

Another positive step toward the end of 2016 was the formation of a Complex Development Committee. Sincere thanks to Peter Conway, Denis Tierney, Pat Jordan, Terry Galea, Troy Hansen, Sam Einam, Karen Dolan, Jan Walker and Paul Mantell for volunteering their time to join me on this committee. The group has not been idle in the off season with Troy and Sam having worked to submit a grant application to the Gambling Community Benefit Fund for funds to upgrade the field 1 watering system and Peter, Pat, Denis & Terry have battled the hot weather to improve the field 1 water trough and level and top dress the grassed area at the southern end of the clubhouse. Now the wait begins to hear the outcome of our grant application. Fingers crossed that our application is successful so we can undertake the much needed upgrade of our watering system which will improve efficiency and reduce costs. This committee will now be looking at a ‘wish list’ of improvements and upgrades for our complex and then prioritising the items identified in line with grants available and the funds we have available. I’m sure it goes without saying that the more volunteer assistance we get with projects, the more funds we can save which can then be directed into other projects. With the wealth of skills and talent we have within our Association, let’s hope we get the support needed so we are able to bring many projects to fruition throughout the year. As is always the case at this point in the season when we are looking to fill positions on the various Committees, I would urge you to not only consider nominating yourself but to urge others within your network to put their hand up and assist where they can. The range of jobs needing to be done is so wide and varied that I’m confident there would a task suited to anyone who can give some time. Team work makes the dream work! So the more people we can get involved the more we will be able to achieve. As is always the case . . . . Some people want it to happen . . . . Some wish it to happen . . . . And others make it happen! So as we prepare for the new season, I think it is just so important that we keep at the forefront of our thinking that you can have change without improvement . . . . but you can’t have improvement without change. As we head into the 2017 season, I look forward to another fulfilling and rewarding season with us continuing to work together to ensure continued success and growth for Ipswich Hockey.

Senior Vice-President’s Report

2016 Season

Well the 2016 season started on a sad note with one of our oldest clubs unable to field an A grade Men's team, reducing our A grade competition to 3 teams. However, the inclusion of an extra round with Toowoomba teams helped to resurrect the competition. Hopefully 2017 will see Easts back in our A Grade Men’s competition. Once again I have to thank those people who stepped up in their roles to help me get through the season; my personal secretary Lyn Brown, my understudy Denis Tierney and also my two children Amanda and Daniel and also all those people who were on the Tech bench and Judiciary throughout the year. To our Tech Committee a job well done in what was a very difficult and testing year. Thank you to our RCD Sam who went over and beyond her role in helping out the Association and myself throughout the year. Our association is very lucky to have the Spry family on board. Our Ipswich Ladies Masters saw an increase to 4 teams this year to go to Bundy which was very pleasing. It's great to see all the mature ladies still loving their game of hockey or should I say the social side of hockey. Once again it was a tiring season for all our Executive members. The roles seem to get bigger each year and would be even worse but for the hard work of Margret who puts in long hours at the grounds keeping everything running smoothly. Hopefully this year we will be able to put in a small committee to help Mark out in the clubhouse as this job is also getting too big for one person. Thank you for electing me for the 2016 season and I hope I have done my job to your satisfaction. Yours in hockey Janette Howells Senior Vice President

Secretary’s Report 2016

I believe I have well and truly been initiated into the “Hockey Club”. For the past 10 years I have been the Assistant Treasurer and this year I thought I could do more and I am sure I met this target! This year saw me take on the role not just of the Assistant Treasurer but my first year as Secretary for the Association and goal keeper for the A2 Ladies. I am also the parent of 2 children who play and my husband also is an Umpire and the Vice-President of Clubhouse. So I think during the Season I lived, breathed and slept hockey. Whilst I can’t guarantee that I will follow in the footsteps of my late father-in-law – Herbert Eleison of 40 years as Record Secretary, I will certainly do my best for the Association. Whilst I married into a hockey family, I am still learning how to play and to learn all the rules. I have had numerous questions and some I think may have sounded uneducated to the hockey legends. Over the years I have leaned on Lesley McLeod, Records Secretary, to answer a number of questions regarding By-Laws and registrations etc and she has always been available. Thank you. I am also a big believer of open communication. We can never have enough positive and open communication as this way everyone is on the same page and it is a level playing field. I may have inundated Clubs and members of the Committee with emails but at least everyone knows what is happening. Communication is key. This year I was introduced to exactly how many Rep Teams Ipswich send away from the Coulter Shield, Southern Cross and then our Open and Masters Teams. It is a privilege to play in a Rep Team and to know that we send a team away from each age group is great. Thanks to the Executive who I find are all open and supportive of each other and we all have the same goal – seeing Ipswich Hockey survive and prosper. Ipswich Hockey however needs NEW people to step up and assist with the growth of the Association. The current members are doing a great job, but can always do with assistance. Treasurer’s Report for 2016

Mr Patron, Madam President, Ladies & Gentlemen, I am pleased to present the Financial Statements of the Association for the year ended 30th November 2016, and to confirm that the finances of the Association were steady during the year. Revenue was slightly higher with our main player incomes, Game and Training fees higher and we also received $17,000 from Hockey Queensland towards our RCD costs, due to us achieving the various milestones in accordance with our Memorandum of Understanding with HQ. Our indoor hockey fees received were also higher, as indoor hockey in Ipswich continues to develop under the stewardship of that committee. After taking into account that our Player Registration and Insurance is now paid directly to HQ, our costs were slightly lower in 2016 compared with 2015. While indoor court costs were higher, in line with higher revenues from indoor operations, our operating costs were generally lower. It is noted that our water costs were higher mainly due to higher water usage, which I believe may be due to the deterioration of our water cannons. I note that the President’s report included commentary on our plans to replace the cannons and to look at a booster pump to ensure a better coverage of water to our main field. While profitable, I note that our Bar and Canteens contribution to our result was lower, but we must remember that we hosted two state titles during 2015, with the Men’s Masters weekend takings, in particular, contributing significantly to our excellent result in our Bar and Canteen operations for that year. Our Balance Sheets remains strong, which will allow us to continue to look at opportunities to improve our facility, keeping in mind that a fair proportion of our cash funds will be required in the not too distant future to replace our two artificial fields. I would like to thank your Assistant Treasurer, Julie Eleison for her continued valuable assistance during 2016. I would also again like to acknowledge John & Una Cushing who continued to assist us in various receipting and banking of funds during the year.

RAP Team Co-ordinator’s Report 2016

It’s 5 years since the RAP team sprang into action, prompted by the decline of our junior numbers, particularly boys as in 2011 the Association only had 2 junior boys’ grades. I have looked back at our plans we discussed back then and realised that every year we have introduced something new to the Ipswich Hockey calendar and community. In 2012 it was our first Open Day, our first Hook in2 Hockey theme day and our first free carnival day for our junior players and also the birth of our newsletter. 2013 saw our Sensational Saturday BBQs and coffee van for our Hook in 2 Hockey mornings, allowing our clubs and junior rep teams an opportunity to fundraise and our early morning visitors their coffee or bacon and egg roll fix. Our indoor hockey committee was also formed and our first Gala Dinner was held this year. 2014 was the year we introduced our fundraising weekends with our Pink weekend. The response to our fundraising and colouring of hair, clothes and bodies was exceptional. 2015’s new idea was our “bring a friend” week where our junior players and the friends they brought along to training were given a small reward. But when I sat and thought about what was new for 2016, I was stumped, until I realised that we finally reintroduced our 3rd junior boy’s grade to the competition. Whilst there was plenty of “discussions” both positive and negative regarding the introduction of our J3 grade, this is what the association needed to do with the number of boys now playing. We need to look to the future development of our association and keeping our numbers growing. This was a great result for all clubs, the IHA executive team and the tireless workers of the RAP team however this success for our boys was counteracted by the numbers for our Senior Men’s competition. Meetings were called , clubs and players provided input for our A grade men’s comp, as well as throughout the season, meetings to discuss all senior grades, men and women and what we could all do to improve our numbers. On behalf of the RAP team, I would like to sincerely thank all those who attended and provided feedback and comments at these meetings and forums in 2016. The IHA executive and committees have taken on board many of the ideas and comments, the major one being the recurring “cost to play”. A group was formed to discuss cost and fees and ideas were shared between the clubs and IHA treasurer. The IHA exec team made the decision to not increase the charges from IHA to the clubs for 2017. Hockey Qld has also assisted by introducing a sub senior HQ registration fee for our U20 players, as we are not the only association finding it tough to keep these players.

Which leads into another working group formed from our Senior Forums…our newly named T 2 20 group. The initial concept of a “fast and furious” competition has developed into a transition type grade that will allow our junior players time to develop their skills and confidence as they move from juniors to seniors. Obviously there will be players who have no need for this grade, but we need to ensure we are able to cater for all standards of players. Our T 2 20 grade is planned to be a mixed 9 a side game with development days during the year. Obviously a totally new concept will have “teething “ problems, but we expect with plenty of communication and support between clubs, players and their families we will get this new grade up and running. We have tried a few different ideas throughout the past 5 years, and some we tried once and will never try again, others are a permanent fixture on the calendar, and others just waiting the right time and the right people to make it happen. Our association is moving forward, our indoor hockey competition is growing each year, the Commonwealth games is just around the corner, there are great opportunities waiting for us. Looking at my initial report presented in 2012, it finished with “Our team has an open door policy; anyone interested in being involved is welcome. We need people who are prepared to assist in the implementation of ideas not just think of the idea” This is the mantra of the RAP team – we would really like to see more faces and get some new ideas so keep an eye out for our meeting dates and come along to join in. We will be looking at having our meetings on Saturdays, so will get this information together when the season kicks off. Thanks so much to the great team that I spend my spare time with, Leanne, Pauline, Janette, Heather, Lesley, Jan, Tracey, Sam and Margret and the entire IHA executive team for helping make our ideas happen each year. Thanks also to Barry W, Denis, Peter, Mark and others who jump in and help out when asked …..Whether it be getting the gas or food for the BBQ, erecting shade tents, packing sample bags or decorating. And thanks to my family and the families of all our Rap Team members who are all unofficial assistants in many of our activities as well! A huge Thank you also to all clubs, players and families, who get involved in our activities, dress up, participate and fundraise. Together we have raised our $6000 in the past 3 years for Breast Cancer, Beyond Blue, The Prostate Foundation and Bears of Hope Foundation – so we are doing great things on and off the hockey field and I feel extremely proud and privileged to be involved in the Ipswich Hockey Family. Junior Competition

This season has again shown growth in junior indoor numbers with 17 teams nominated for the juniors competition. (This is up from 14 teams last year). The teams were graded into four grades. The junior competition is going well. All teams have scored goals and most games are very competitive. Already there is noticeable improvement in the indoor skills of players. Our umpires are improving each week also. It is a learning curve for everyone. The junior fixtures recommence on the 2nd February and the season wraps up on the 2nd of March. Senior Competition The senior competition commenced with five teams nominated. Most games are competitive although there is need for more teams to allow for two divisions. Games have been hard fought but played with a good spirit. The competition wraps up on the 24th February. Representative Program We sent away five Ipswich Indoor teams this year. There were other Ipswich players also playing in independent and other teams. The U13 men go away 11-13 November and the women 18-20 November. As you see a number of players were selected into the Qld teams and shadowed.

IPSWICH HOCKEY ASSOCIATION Inc

Regional Coaching Director’s Report 2016 Season 2016 has been very busy for Ipswich Hockey; many achievements have been made by the association, hockey community and our athletes which leads us all in to an exciting 2017 season. The season has seen another strong participation level in Hook in2 Hockey U5, U7 & U9s with our numbers sitting in the 190’s; we are looking to grow these numbers during the 2017 season with the new look Hookin2 Hockey program. A big thank-you to the clubs Hook in2 Hockey coaching staff, especially our juniors who are getting involved, who are teaching and inspiring our future stars of the game how to play but more importantly how to have fun playing the game. It’s been great to walk the fields on a Saturday morning and see the children and the coaches learning new skills and having FUN!! Towards the latter half of the U9 season we again introduced our junior umpires with a strong focus on the basic rules of Feet, Height of the Stick, and the number of players in the tackle. With this introduction, it allowed the coaches to focus on coaching the children and getting them to use all the field (width) and the skills that they had learnt in the first half of the season. Thank you to Umpiring Committee for making sure that we had umpires each week and giving our young up and coming umpires the opportunities to gain confidence and learn more rules and about themselves as umpires. It was great to see many of our junior umpires participate in umpire coaching sessions on a Saturday morning with Robert Lewis. A big thank you to Karen Dolan, Tracey Doyle and the RAP Team for all their time and hard work that went into Hin2H Carnival day for all of the U5, 7 & 9 children. Hin2H Carnival day was “Ipswich Hockey goes to RIO” which seen children and coaches dress up as their favourite sports athlete or in bright colours and play games, have photos with the Olympic rings and enjoy the carnival atmosphere after the games were completed. With our U9 numbers strong from the 2015 season we had introduced back into the Junior fixtures a J3 grade, giving many of our U9 boys the opportunity to move out of Hin2H and learn some new skills and make some new friends. It has proved to be successful and certainly allowed the young boys the opportunity to grow as players and expand our junior player base. Congratulations to all of the coaching staff involved in the J3 competition for getting it off the ground and making it successful’. With these strong numbers for both boys and girls in the J3 Boys and U9 Girls Hin2H this will help to strengthen the numbers in the J2, J1, E, D, & C Grades for the 2017 season. Many of our J1 boys & C Grade girls had the opportunity to play up and gain some experience in the senior grades, this expose was / is very valuable for all the athletes and is a step in the right direction for the clubs and Ipswich hockey. 2016 seen Norths Men and Wests Women win the A Grade finals with Haycocks (men) and Swifts (women) being runners up. Congratulations to all the clubs that played in finals and we look forward to seeing you all play again in the 2017 season with the anticipation of new members, a return of Easts to A Grade men and grow within all the grades. We hosted an array of hockey in the 2016 season Southern Cross Open Women, U19 QLD School Boys Championships, Southern Cross U15 Girls.

Congratulations to all Coaches, Managers, and Selectors on a successful season not just for Rep teams but club teams also, your hard work and dedication to our athletes is greatly appreciated and without people like you there would be no future for our athletes.

Development training took on a new look at the end of the season exposing more athletes to developments sessions and coaching staff. Development squads for athletes 11 to 17 years and senior development squads were also conducted, getting back to basics and making sure that we had a good base to work with. Exposing them to different types of coaching styles incorporating the Queensland Game Base Plan, fitness sessions, fitness testing and skills testing which is taking them out of their comfort zone and allowing them to grow as athletes. Having access to Jeff Daley the QLD GKing coach has been excellent for our goal keepers giving them the opportunity to fine tune their skills. This is something that I will look to expand on in the 2017 season making sure that all our juniors and seniors get the opportunity to be involved in some form of development training. The more we show them that it’s about them and their hockey they will continue to come back keen and eager to learn. Reflecting on the Season that was 2016. Ipswich Hockey Community have embraced change in many way and achieved many great things, athletes of all ages have excelled through hard work and dedication in representing at all levels, volunteers being recognised for their outstanding dedication, hosting QLD and School championships, conducting one of the largest Hook in2 Hockey Seasons, growth in participation numbers, upgrades to the facilities, and development training. It has been a very busy and exciting season for all of us in our amazing hockey community and the talented young athletes that we have. I have been lucky enough to get to some of the State Championships and watch our teams play, it’s a real honour to wear the Ipswich Uniform and see our athletes also wear it with pride. There are so many highlights from the rep / club season that would be awesome to tell you however some exciting highlights were being able to give all athletes an opportunity to play rep not just for Ipswich but for other regions, some of those athletes had very successful trips away one being in the winning team for U18 women. Seeing athletes nominate that would not normally nominate, meaning that we had to run several trial sessions to pick teams. This was exciting to have our number increase but also the teaching element that they need to work hard for a position on the team. As you would have read earlier in my report the list of athletes that had the privilege and honour to pull on the Maroon and represent QLD, and to know that our youngest was 12 and the oldest well let’s just say is in the 75+ age group and going strong. Congrats to you all. Exciting times are ahead for Ipswich Hockey Association, I believe that our year is going to be filled with many achievements big and small and lots of FUN for everyone. Umpire’s President Report 2016

Ipswich umpires had a very successful time away at the various Championships through the State and at

National level and with some outstanding achievements by some of our junior umpires. Although the

standard of these umpires at the various Championships is strong we are still having problems

transferring this standard to our local fixtures. But the signs are good for the future with the juniors

coming up through the grades and coupled with our more promising junior umpires doing some of the

junior finals.

Congratulations go to Aaron Gotting and Leonie Young who both achieved the highest level in umpiring

in Australia that is Level 3. Also to Mark Eleison, Luke Haley, Zoe Fox, Robert Lewis, Brent Kinnane,

Natalie Walker, Kyle Jackson who all have started their journey to this goal, they are all on Level 1. Also

seven of our umpires were awarded community level or upgraded to community advance level.

Aaron Gotting was invited to join the AHL open men panel.

Abby Eleison was awarded the Julie Ashton-Lucy medal for the most promising junior umpire.

Christina Nipperess-Sims was awarded the Cheryl Kann Medal for the most promising umpire medal by

BWHA where she umpired the DIV 1 & DIV 2 finals.

Our junior clinic on Saturday mornings are all well attended with high hopes that they all will be back to

start umpiring fixtures with the assistance from our select group of senior umpires at first. With the

numbers increasing we are looking at a second clinic on a school afternoon to be arranged, this will only

happen if the numbers are there as was last year where we were forced young hopefuls away.

As a way of improving the level of consistency between the umpires I am looking into wireless

communication between the officiation umpires. The idea is to use the units similar to the ones Brisbane

use. We will need to get this right as the initial cost will be high.

In closing I would like to thank my committee for their assistance and help throughout the season. A

committee who always put their hand up when extra help was needed.

Record’s Secretary Report 2016

Ladies and Gentlemen:

On behalf of the members of the Tech Committee I present this report for the 2016 Season. There were various lows and highs across the season, which lead to a season full of mixed results. By far the best result for Ipswich Hockey Association during the 2016 Season was the formation of three separate grades for the junior boy’s competition. This result has come about after five years of hard work by the various Clubs and their members. To each of you I offer my sincere thanks for this wonderful outcome. Whilst, there were a number of lows across the season I believe that it is best not to allow these negatives to bring us down and to push forward in the hope that the 2017 Season will bring fresh ideas and a more positive outcome. Team nominations for both competitions have stayed close to the same as for the 2015 Season. Whilst, the senior men’s competition had a slight decline the formation of the extra teams in the junior boy’s competition has seen an increase of two teams across the men’s competition. The women’s competition was down by one team when compared to the 2015 Season competition. Once again there was some wonderful co-operation between Clubs, which lead to members gaining valuable experience and the retention of these members. This co-operation is a very valuable tool that needs to be maintained to ensure the future of Ipswich Hockey. The Combined Competition with Toowoomba for the A Grade teams yet again provided that extra competition for all teams. I feel that the double round of competition for the A Grade Men proved valuable for both Associations. Unfortunately for Ipswich Hockey this season saw both the Men’s and Women’s Combined Competition trophies won by the Toowoomba teams. This season also saw an increase in numbers for the Hook in2 Hockey program, which is very pleasing. Here’s hoping that we retain all of these members and that the majority of them will progress into Club fixtures in the coming years. The various results of club fixtures are listed on the pages that follow.

State Championships Whilst the 2016 Season did not see any wins for Ipswich Hockey teams at State Championships it is still pleasing to see that we are sending teams away to these Championships. Attendance at these Championships can only assist our players to continue to develop their skills and playing abilities. This past season did however see Ipswich nominate two Men’s Masters Teams in the State Championships. Which in turn lead to several of these players being selected for State teams. Our teams finished as follows:-
