Patron’s Message

Ladies and Gentlemen

Ipswich Hockey Association, under the presidency of Margret Mantell, continues to play an important role in promoting the sport to Ipswich residents and the wider hockey community of South East Queensland. At tonight’s annual meeting you will again be invited to select a president and committee to lead the association forward. On behalf of all councillors and residents, I thank Margret and the management committee for their tireless volunteer work at the helm of the Ipswich Hockey Association. Ipswich is a great sporting city with nearly every conceivable sport embraced. Hockey is one of the “world sports”, played in about 178 countries. It is a credit to Ipswich and the city’s hockey enthusiasts to have world-class facilities and such a deep pool of talent to draw from. The association does a tremendous job co-ordinating the season from March through to September, with 9 different clubs competing for the top honour in a range of age categories. And it is clearly a sport for all ages. Players can take the field from the age of three and the most experienced player is still wielding a stick in his seventies. I congratulate the Ipswich Hockey Association on another successful year, welcome the new committee members and wish players, families and supporters all best for the future. Mayor Paul Pisasale City of Ipswich

President’s Report 2012 Well, we did it! At this time last year when Ipswich Hockey came to the end of an era with John ‘handing over the reigns’, I’m sure I wasn’t alone in wondering what the season would bring. I can assure you it seemed a daunting task, knowing first-hand the number of hours John put in each day and the endless number of jobs he undertook. I commented on more than one occasion that no one would really know the number of jobs he did until someone else had to do them. Twelve months on, I can say with certainty that proved to be the case. And while I can also confidently say we did it, I have to stress WE did it – it has taken a great team effort to fill John’s shoes. It certainly wasn’t a task I could have done on my own. So it is with great pleasure and pride that I report on the 2012 season. Of course the highlight had to be us being named Hockey Queensland’s Association of the Year. I believe it was fitting recognition for the great work we did and continue to do in promoting hockey and providing a valuable service as well as great facilities to our local community. Another major achievement was the successful growth in our Hook in2 Hockey program. With this being a vital area if our sport is to continue to grow, it was a very focused campaign to recruit new participants. In 2010 the number of participants was 53, in 2011 it was 123 and in 2012 the number jumped to a staggering 212 players. Of these 212 participants, 133 were first timers, attracted by the various initiatives undertaken by Ipswich Hockey to lift its profile. With Hockey Queensland introducing its state wide advertising campaign this year, we are hoping that numbers will be even higher in 2013. The work done by our newly formed Recruitment Strategy Team (RST), brilliantly led by Karen Dolan, was unparalleled. The carnival day to end the season was a fantastic initiative and the support from clubs & players for our raffle to fund the day was wonderful. As you will hear in Karen’s report, the team has been renamed in an effort to rekindle interest and hopefully again have the support and input from all clubs. I’m sure all clubs want to reap the rewards and therefore all clubs must contribute and share the workload. Our representative program continues to go from strength to strength under the expert guidance of our RCD Neil Shearer. Our Under 13 Boys, our Under 18 Women and our Open Men won their respective State Championships and all teams who competed at the various competitions were a credit to Ipswich Hockey. From the various championships we had a number of players selected to represent Queensland or named in Development Squads. It was also very pleasing to have Ipswich boys named as the Players of the Under 13 and Under 15 Boys State Championships. This confirms that our development programs are on the right path which should ensure Ipswich teams perform well into the future. We finished the season hosting the Under 18 Men’s State Championships where 19 teams competed. Again, it was a great team effort that ensured the success of the championships. In 2013 we will be hosting the Under 15 Girls Championships in the first week in July, so it will need to be all hands on deck again. I am confident everyone will again ‘do their bit’ to ensure the workload of hosting a championship is shared. Neil continues to do a great job in his role as Regional Coaching Director. He never passes up the opportunity to attend schools and has conducted several Outside School Hours Programs himself when he has been unable to source other coaches to ensure the hockey programs can go ahead. His determination and commitment to further developing our Junior Summer Competition highlights the passion he has for his job and his commitment to Ipswich Hockey. With his initial

Page 8: Hockey Queensland’s 2012 Association of the Year 82 Annual ...Website - IPSWICH HOCKEY ASSOCIATION INC. 82nd Annual Report 2012 Season Hockey Queensland’s 2012 Association of the

two year contract about to expire, we are working with Hockey Queensland to renew Neil’s contract and to ensure he is with us for some time more years to come.

I would also like to make special mention of Lesley McLeod who took on the role of Records Secretary. I can speak from experience when I say that role is not an easy one, trying to meet the needs of all clubs and individual players. Lesley met all the challenges thrown at her and did a great job, ably assisted by the other members of the Tech Committee.

The work done by our Umpires Committee continues to be a highlight for Ipswich Hockey. Through their development program Ipswich Hockey is always able to provide umpires for all carnivals & State Championships – from Under 11 through to Super League. Several of our umpires umpired finals and received awards at Junior State Championships this year. Thank you to Bernie Gotting and those on the Umpires Committee for their hard work.

With our Umpires Committee constantly working on improving the standards of our umpires, to show our support, Ipswich Hockey applied for and received a grant under the Positive or Its Pointless Program. The initiatives undertaken under this program have focussed on respecting and accepting the decisions of umpires and all officials.

Another group that deserves special praise is our Judicial Committee of Janette, Bernie, Sara, Dennis & Joy. Throughout the 2012 season they were faced with some very challenging situations which required them to make some very tough decisions. But in the best interests of Ipswich Hockey and to ensure our great game could be enjoyed by all, they made those difficult calls. Hockey in Ipswich is the better for the decisions they make.

As Ipswich Hockey works hard to build the profile of hockey in our ever expanding region, we value the great working relationship we have with David Lems and The Queensland Times. David is a regular visitor to our complex and rarely misses a weekend where he delights in watching games and chatting with players and officials. David’s articles in the QT on Tuesdays are always something to look forward to, and his support of Ipswich Hockey is greatly appreciated.

The Ipswich City Council and in particular our local councilor, Charlie Pisasale, and the Mayor and our Patron, Paul, continue to be great supporters of Ipswich Hockey and their support is greatly appreciated.

Ipswich Hockey is fortunate to have wonderful volunteers who continue to give of their time year after year and have done so for MANY years. Special thanks to Nev Winks and Ron Lobegeiger who continue to mow our fields week in and week out and to Una Cushing & Bev Knight who are the ever friendly and smiling faces of Ipswich Hockey when we are entertaining guests.

As I said at the start of this report, the achievements of 2012 were the result of the hard work of a very dedicated team. A ‘Duty Roster’ was developed with members of the Executive covering the various sessions throughout the weekend to ensure the workload was shared. My personal thanks to Nathan, Peter, Karen, Bruce, Trish and Paul for the hours they gave each weekend. You are a great team to be a part of and I’m sure the entire Association joins me in thanking you for your dedication and the time you have given.

In thanking people, you always run the risk of leaving someone out. But I’m confident all the wonderful people who volunteer and make up our great Ipswich Hockey family know your efforts are very much appreciated.

As we approach the 2013 season, it is onwards and upwards. As has been said, ‘Teamwork divides the task and multiplies the success’.

Senior Vice-President’s Report 2012 Season

Good Evening Ladies, Gentlemen and Distinguished Guests, First year as the Senior Vice-President and wow what a year. It certainly has been a massive learning curve and an enjoyable experience. With a somewhat new structure at Ipswich Hockey the job for the whole committee has been hard work, challenging but very rewarding at the same time. I think the leadership of the President, Margret Mantell, has been exceptional in her first year as President and I am confident in the positive progress that will continue to happen under her leadership. I also want to congratulate the whole IHA community on winning the QLD Hockey Association of the Year award. We faced many challenges in 2012 with a decline in some junior numbers from 2011 being the main focus for us to try and rejuvenate the sport with the younger community of Ipswich. With Karen Dolan working tirelessly with her recruitment team we were able to attain record numbers with our Hook In2 Hockey which will guarantee our future. We still have a long way to go to try and reconnect with the teenagers and also to keep players in that age bracket in the game. I am confident with the continued work of Karen Dolan and our strategy team that we will be able to maintain the current crop of juniors and grow beyond in 2013. A massive thank you must go out to all volunteers that helped out at IHA in 2012. From people attending the working bees to coaches, managers, committee members and all other officials. Your help and support ensures that not only the kids of Ipswich Hockey get to enjoy their sport but so do the older ones who require that assistance to keep their clubs running. Some mornings at the Hook In2 Hockey you could have been mistaken that it was Grand Final day with countless parents, kids, coaches and organisers running around ensuring everyone has a great time. We once again look forward to your continued support in 2013 to make it an even more successful year. On a personal note I believe the hard work and dedication of our RCD Neil Shearer has been awesome. Neil certainly takes the time to ensure that all representative programs are run well and also finds time to assist club sides and individuals within those club sides. His work with Hook In2 Hockey programs is well received by all the participants and their parents. I believe Neil is key to our growth here at Ipswich Hockey and I hope you all find time to deal with him in some way as he is a pleasure to work with. In closing it has been a great year for the new committee and I want to thank all of them for their help throughout the year. I particularly enjoy the 6am Saturday morning openings with Pete where we converse on all important and a lot of unimportant topics. I look forward to a very enjoyable 2013 at IHA where we can build on the success of 2012 with the assistance of our fantastic Ipswich Hockey Community who are second to none! Nathan Hooper

Secretary’s Report 2012

It felt like the newly appointed Executive team hit the ground running at a frantic pace. Many changes occurred around the grounds and it was good to see more people, other than the usual, coming forward to volunteer their time. Over the last 12 months the administration side of Ipswich Hockey ran quite smoothly and it was good to see that management meetings continued to run efficiently finishing at a respectable hour. Thank you to Tina Backen and Leanne Haley for taking on the joint role of Championships Coordinator. They ensured that our representative teams had travel and accommodation booked and our managers supplied with manager folders. After fulfilling the role of Secretary for the Association for the past four years, I’ve decided to step down and take a break to focus on my young family. I will however continue to assist where possible in the background. Thank you to the IHA Executive, the Technical Committee, the Umpires and the Judiciary Panel and other volunteers for putting in your time and dedication to Ipswich Hockey in 2012. I would like to especially thank Margret Mantell for her continuous support, her vast knowledge of hockey certainly made my role easier over the years. My best wishes to the new Executive for the future. I believe Ipswich Hockey will continue to grow and go from strength to strength. Yours in Hockey Trisha Harley

RST/RAPT Co-ordinator’s Report 2012

The Recruitment Strategy Team was created in September 2011 with the purpose of having one group working together to “increase numbers and retain existing players”. All clubs were invited to come along and put together ideas, discuss issues and come up with a way forward. Initially, we mainly had club reps from the clubs with juniors as the thinking was, I guess, that is where the future is. So many ideas were put forward and discussed and some just had to be shelved as we realized that maybe this was going to be quite a daunting task. The first challenge we took on was to raise the profile of Ipswich Hockey and open the gates and the fields and host an Open Day. We had 25 market stalls lined up, celebrity players, great food stalls, fun activities and all was looking good …… but the good old Queensland weather beat us in 2012. We still had our day, with 6 stalls, games and activities between showers and were pleased with the turn out. But it wasn’t quite what we had planned but never mind…what was next on the list to be done? Junior numbers, particularly boys, and increasing our Hook in2 Hockey numbers was next. IHA agreed to offer a $10.00 discount to all new players; that certainly was attractive to some new families. We did increase our numbers for boys and had clubs working together to create combined teams and find spots in teams for players whose club could just not get numbers. It was great to hear the conversations between some clubs ensuring that we did not lose these players. Our list also had a junior carnival to be organised – a free fun day for all our junior players to be held on the last day of junior fixtures. Fantastic idea but it needed to be funded….so the list then included an Association wide raffle to be organised. Once again clubs worked together to sell tickets and raise money for this fun day. It didn’t seem fair though to have everyone sell tickets and only junior players get the benefit…so monies were distributed to the clubs for their senior presentation nights. A formula based on numbers of players, tickets sold etc. determined the breakup of the monies. In the midst of carnival organising and raffles ticket distribution and collection, the Olympics were on and this meant Olympic Day for our Hook in2 Hockey players. Such a great job the team had done on recruitment meant we had to make 212 medals for all our players! The carnival day was a huge success, all the children walked away with smiles on their faces and we booked all the rides for 2013 then and there! At times the meeting numbers dwindled as the season progressed and as other priorities took over….but we had a dedicated group of people who kept coming along month after month, activity after activity and at times it seemed as though we weren’t getting anywhere and we wondered why we were bothering. Maybe a change of team name would help get more people on board was discussed, so the RAP team was born…this is the RECRUITMENT ADVANCEMENT and PROMOTION team that is all about lifting the profile of hockey for juniors and seniors.

Page 17: Hockey Queensland’s 2012 Association of the Year 82 Annual ...Website - IPSWICH HOCKEY ASSOCIATION INC. 82nd Annual Report 2012 Season Hockey Queensland’s 2012 Association of the

But when you sit down and look at what we achieved in 2012, we did great and that list got a few things ticked off. A monthly newsletter, surveys – for Hook in2 Hockey and also our senior players. Thanks to the feedback from these, changes will happen in 2013 starting with the way our Hook in2 Hockey program is structured and ending in an End of Season presentation night. A professional IHA brochure was finally available for distribution. And of course, some of our contributions helped the IHA being named by Hockey Queensland as Association of the Year. 2013 has already had successes for the team, with information stands at Riverlink and Springfield Markets, the Lorna Jane Ipswich store promoting us as their business of the week leading up to Open day and of course a hugely successful Open Day with heaps and heaps of people. I would like to sincerely thank everyone who attended the RST/RAPT meetings, assisted in the arts and crafts, came up with ideas and tactics, shared concerns and advice but the biggest thank you must go to Tracey Doyle, Leanne Haley, Pauline Alchin, Jan Walker, Neil Shearer and Margret Mantell and for all the back ground organising to Trish Harley. At times you have laughed at me, but mainly you have laughed with me and it has been fantastic when we have had a win with our ideas and events. Thank you. Our team has an open door policy, anyone interested in being involved is welcome…but we need people who are prepared to assist in the implementation of ideas not just think of the idea. Sometimes it’s very hard to get everything done with a only a handful of people, though they are all superwomen (and men when they appear) So if that sounds like you, we would love to have you on board…… Karen Dolan RAP Team Co-ordinator 2012

Regional Coaching Director’s Report 2012

2012 was my second year with Ipswich Hockey. Last season, Ipswich Hockey people continued to be friendly, sincere and family orientated while Julie, Alexis & Nicolas enjoyed coming down to the fields. I’m grateful for the help and advice received by everyone to help improve Ipswich Hockey, and by working together we have made our great sport develop. The 2012 season started with our Hook in2 Hockey program. From this program, Rookey 5’s, 7’s & 9’s commenced. In my 2011 report I wrote, “I would love to see the age group for 2012 become 5’s, 7’s & 9’s if we have enough players and coaches” as well as “Also, the Under 9 competition becomes a club competition with umpires running till mid-August”. Both did come true. Thank you to all involved for making this happen. The Junior Girls competition age groups were E, D, & C Grade. Junior Boys were J1 & J2 (no age requirements) up to 15 years of age. The boys’ numbers did grow in 2012. Hopefully 2013 we will once again have E, D & C Grade for the boys. “Recruit, Retain, Recruit & Retain” is the message. I hope this now comes true in 2013 with clubs retaining players gained in 2012. A big thank you must go to Karen Dolan and the RAP Team for their help making Ipswich Hockey grow. Again, both Ipswich and Toowoomba U/11 rep teams played inter-city games in July with 2 Boys and 3 Girls teams competing. Well done to all concerned. In 2012, both Ipswich and Toowoomba A Grade competitions combined for the Combined Competition. This competition in my eyes continues to be a great concept to help with boredom from playing the same teams week in and week out. I do think a short 4 week U/15 competition with Toowoomba would help develop our juniors as this comp would be hard, fierce and competitive. This is my own opinion. IHA’s A Grade competition was a close comp with both Hancocks and Norths running out with the A Grade Trophies. Hancocks Women won their first Premiership in over 30 years while the Men’s game was a spectacular sporting event to witness with Norths winning by Golden Goal over Easts. Congratulations to all the Clubs who participated in 2012. Looking forward to seeing you all back in 2013. There was one HockeyEd coaching accreditation course run in the off-season. This was a combined Level 1 & AASC accreditation course. This was the first combined course run in Queensland and maybe Australia. To everyone who completed this course, well done. We are always looking for more accredited coaches & AASC coaches. Congratulations to our No 1 Under 13 Boys team members: players, coach, manager, parents and supporters on winning the State Championships 2 years in-a-row. It was also very pleasing that Ipswich was able to send 2 Under 13 Boys Teams away in 2012; first time in a long time. Please view all results plus who made the Queensland & Developments Teams in supporting documents.

Page 19: Hockey Queensland’s 2012 Association of the Year 82 Annual ...Website - IPSWICH HOCKEY ASSOCIATION INC. 82nd Annual Report 2012 Season Hockey Queensland’s 2012 Association of the

This year saw our junior summer competition break-up into Under 13 boys and girls and Under 18 Girls competitions. This comp was using most of the indoor rules with side-boards on the hybrid field 2 nights a week for 10 weeks. This concept saw many new faces play for the first time and saw players back who used to play years before. 2012 saw Ipswich send away both Under 15 Boys and Girls indoor teams to the State Challenge. Girls finished 4th and the Boys 3rd which was a great effort. Hannah Casey was chosen in the Queensland Under 15 Girls team while Jay Pavitt and Sam Morgan made the Queensland Boys Team with Mitchell Moran selected as a shadow. A Big Thank You must go to everybody who continues to make my family feel welcome here. Plus, HUGE thanks must go to Mr & Mrs Cushing for being our baby sitters. We are both so indebted to you. Also, thank you to everyone with your kind thoughts as Nicolas continues with his battles. Final note: thank you to all Rep Teams Coaches, Managers & Selectors for the 2012 rep season. Let’s hope 2013 will bring more success. I sincerely thank the IHA Executive for your help and support. This is not a job; it is a passion, my hobby and a great sport. UMPIRES COMMITTEE

President’s Report – 2012 Season

It is with pleasure that I give my first President’s report for the 2012 season. This year has been another exceptional year for Ipswich umpires with many being recognised for their performances at State championships. I have attached a list of achievements separately. Firstly I would like to thank the rest of the Umpires committee members, Secretary Chris Leeder and Treasurer Margret Mantell for their tireless work throughout this season, and Murray Rogers for his assistance and advice to me when required. Secondly to John Corney for his continued work in mentoring the junior umpires on a Saturday morning. His guidance to our junior umpires has seen them develop their umpiring skills and confidence throughout the season. Our selection committee always struggles to get a club representative to assist in allocations, but thanks to Rae Chandler and Nathan Hooper (IHA Representative) who assisted this year and have now gained valuable knowledge on what is required and the depth that goes into selecting umpires for all levels of games. This season saw payments for umpiring A grade games increased to $30 per game. The umpires association covered half of the increase to help ease the burden on Clubs who had already set fees for the season. With the introduction of the Positive or it’s Pointless Program the IHA adopted this season, it is good to see the installation of signs reminding players, officials and spectators of positive behaviour during games. Our development program continues with our Junior umpires clinics which saw another 8 complete training this season. What would be an ideal situation is to have more senior and experienced umpires work with mentoring these juniors on a more regular basis, by either umpiring junior games with them or just watching them and giving feedback. This will only improve performances during the season which will result in higher standards for the finals series. Congratulations to all umpires who officiated on local fixtures, finals, State Championships and National Championships, and to those who have won awards for their performances this season. Keep up the good work. Bernadette Gotting

Records Secretary’s Report – 2012 Season

Ladies and Gentlemen:

It is with pleasure this report is presented on behalf of the Technical Committee. This being my first year as Records Secretary was a huge learning curve and I wish to thank all the Clubs for their patience and understanding during the season.

There were many challenges put before the Technical Committee the most concerning being the lack of junior members for the competitions. Whilst, numbers for the Hook in2 Hockey program increased significantly during 2012 it will take at least 2 to 3 years before we see the fruits of this labour. It is my hope and I am sure the hope of all Clubs that during the 2013 Season junior teams will be able to participate in the C, D and E format for both boys and girls. During 2012 season our real success was with the Hook in2 Hockey program. 212 children were registered in the program. Which was an increase of 89 children from 2011, here’s hoping that 2013 is an even more successful year. The combined competition for A Grade teams was once again a huge success and Ipswich was successful in winning the A Grade Women’s final. Congratulations to Swifts for a great win. The total number of teams nominated for the 2012 season was down on the 2011 season numbers. In the men’s teams there were 25 nominations and 44 teams were nominated in the women’s, both were down by one team from 2011 season. This situation is a real concern and hopefully the “Open Day” has attracted more senior and junior members. The various results of club fixtures are listed on the pages that follow.

State Championships Of our teams that competed at State Championships, it was our U13 boys who were successful in retaining the “State Champions” title for the second year running. Whilst our Open Men’s No. 1 and U18 Women’s No. 1 teams were successful in their Division 2 finals winning the title of “State Champions” for Division 2 teams. Our teams finished as follows:-

Super League (South West) Super League (South West) Men’s 2nd Women’s 3rd

National Representatives

It truly was a learning experience for me and I am so thankful for having such wonderful people involved with this Committee providing their guidance and support. Whilst each member spent countless hours doing up the draws, attending to endless e-mails and meeting I must say that Heather Scott did a marvellous job preparing the game cards for each week’s fixtures and keeping all the hard copy records for both the Men’s and Women’s team. To Margret, Janette and Phillip your assistance, help and guidance certainly made the job a lot easier. To all Clubs I wish you the best of luck for the 2013 season. May this season be a wonderful success. Lesley Mc Leod Records Secretary
