The shield in the middle of the Ipswich Coat of Arms is based on the arms of the “Cinque Ports”; these were five harbour towns in the South of England that Ipswich worked closely with through trade and shipbuilding, particularly building ships for the Navy. The shield also has an English lion and three ships and at the top of the Coat of Arms is a knight’s helmet and an English lion holding a ship. All together, these elements represent England’s maritime power and the strength of the Navy.

At the side of the Coat of Arms are the two mythological Neptune’s Seahorses, these were creatures of Neptune who was the god of the sea and water; Neptune rode a chariot through the sea that was pulled by seahorses. This god is who Neptune Marina and Neptune Quay along the Ipswich waterfront are named after.

The seahorse is a perfect symbol for Ipswich; it celebrates the town’s maritime (sea or fish) and agricultural (horse) history. You can find these seahorses on buildings all over Ipswich!

The story of Ipswich and seahorses

Here are five easy things you can do to help keep our oceans lovely and clean for seahorses and other marine animals like whales, dolphins, turtles and fish:

Put all plastics and plastic packaging that can be recycled into your recycling bin. Most packaging will say if it can be recycled or not.

When you are out and about, pick up plastic litter and put it in a recycling bin. This will also help birds, bugs and hedgehogs who can get tangled up, or injured, in our waste.

If you are out for dinner, ask not to have a plastic straw in your drink as these cannot be recycled. Many restaurants, bars and pubs now have environmentally-friendly paper straws.

Try not to buy food in plastic packaging that cannot be recycled. For example: when buying drinks or sauces, choose a glass bottle; when buying vegetables, choose your own from the crates without a plastic bag.

Try to avoid buying supermarket plastic bags. Many plastic bags cannot be recycled so it’s best to reuse the ones you already have and start using canvas bags or a backpack to carry shopping.

Our seas are polluted with huge amounts of plastic that have either been dumped into our oceans or blown into them from rivers and waterways. Plastic doesn’t break down into smaller pieces in water so it can stay in

our oceans for over 450 years, which means many animals can get stuck in the plastic or eat the plastic, that can poison and kill them.

Seahorses are strange but cute little marine animals that live in many of the world’s oceans. In Ancient Roman mythology,

Neptune’s Seahorses were half-fish half-horse creatures that look quite similar to a real seahorse. Two Neptune’s

Seahorses are on the Ipswich Coat of Arms.

Get involved

If you want to get involved and help keep Ipswich clean and tidy, you can

join in on Ipswich Central’s #ItsMyStreet Clean-Up days on the second

Friday of every month! Grab a broom and clean-up outside your house or

put on some gloves and pick-up every bit of litter you see when you’re

out or just pick up one piece of plastic and put it in the recycling -

picking up just one piece of litter everyday can make a big difference!
