Of the six IPTV product categories that SNL Kagan evaluates, two have clear global market leaders, while the other four categories have multiple vendors vying for the top spot globally. In the highly contested middleware segment, for example, the top spot belongs to ZTE, followed by Huawei and Ericsson with market shares too close to call a clear winner. Similarly, in VOD server software Huawei is on top, with ZTE and Ericsson close behind. The set-top box and middleware categories also have three vendors tightly packed at the top. There are clear global IPTV market leaders in access (Alcatel-Lucent) and in content protection (Verimatrix).
While many operators, particularly in developed regions, have had IPTV offerings available for several years, SNL Kagan expects the market to experience solid growth globally as emerging markets like the Middle East/Africa and the Caribbean/Latin America see new entrants and offerings. Additionally, vendors once focused on providing only to the operators in their respective domestic markets have branched out to other regions, particularly Asian vendors entering emerging markets.
