Overview:
The oral cavity contains some of the most varied and vast flora in the entire human
body and is the main entrance to two systems, vital for the functioning of human
physiology: the gastro-intestinal and respiratory systems. Several diseases of the
two systems manifest in the oral cavity. In addition, specific pathologic conditions,
such as periodontitis, may be present in the oral cavity. These specific conditions of
the oral cavity may create foci of infection that can affect many other vital systems
such as the cardiovascular and renal systems.
Simultaneous drug intake may vary the number and proportion of flora.
Concomitant use of medications may alter the overall pattern, atypical organisms
begin to predominate and some organisms with a benign nature, such as Candida
albicans, become pathogenic. The relative risk of cardiovascular disease is
doubled in persons with periodontal disease, which permits organisms to enter
deep systemic tissues, such as the carotid atheroma.
Features:

Treatment & Prevention:
The goal is to reduce inflammation. The dentist or dental hygienist will clean your
teeth; they may use different tools to loosen and remove deposits from the teeth.
Careful oral hygiene is necessary after professional tooth cleaning. The dentist or
hygienist will show you how to brush and floss. Professional tooth cleaning, in
addition to brushing and flossing, may be recommended twice per year or more
frequently for severe cases of gum disease.
o Repair of misaligned teeth or replacement of dental and orthodontic
appliances may be recommended.
o Any other related illnesses or conditions should be treated.
o Antibacterial mouth rinses or other aids may also be
recommended.
