    EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

Te immediate public response to energy conservation is almost always a resounding yes, yes!,but how does one convince 50,000 students that their actions really matter?

In 2008, ormer Virginia Commonwealth University president Eugene P. rani signed the Ameri-can College and University Presidents Climate Commitment promising to achieve universitycarbon neutrality by the year 2050. Te Of ce o Sustainability at VCU has pledged to meet this

goal by reducing the universitys annual amount o energy consumed by students, aculty andsta through eective communication strategies which will evoke sustainable behavior changesthroughout the VCU community.

Te iReduce Campaign aims to motivate students to reduce their energy usage through posi-tive behavior changes. Te campaigns three main objectives are to increase the percent o VCU

students who: urn o unused lights on campus by 20% Unplug personal electronics by 10%

Choose energy ef cient lighting by 15%

Proposed strategies include providing students with inormation regarding energy usagereduction through social media outlets, graphical representation and tactical literature, as well asstudent participation in awareness events on campus.

Trough the implementation o these strategies, students will not only help bring VCU closerto its goal o carbon neutrality by 2050, but also gain valuable knowledge to make sustainable

changes in other aspects o their lives. Nearly all o the inormation provided to students can beapplied at their workplace, o-campus home, or other energy-consuming environment. Beingrugal with energy consumption shouldnt end when students step o campus.

    BACKGROUNDER

Te client, Virginia Commonwealth Universitys (VCU) Of ce o Sustainability, made its rst o-cial statement committing to environmental sustainability in higher education through the al-loires Declaration in 1991. VCUs president Emeritus Eugene P. rani, Ph.D., signed the AmericanCollege and University Presidents Climate Commitment in April 2008. Te University pledged tocreate a climate action plan by 2010 and to achieve carbon neutrality by the year 2050.

Te Of ce o Sustainabilitys goal is to reduce the amount o energy consumed by students, aculty and sta through eective communication that will evoke behavior and sustainableliestyle changes. Since the Sustainability Endowments Institute issued the universitys rstCollege Sustainability Report Card, VCU has improved its rating a C- in 2008 to a A- in 2011.

As a member o the U.S. Green Building Council and the Association or the Advancement o

Sustainability in Higher Education, VCU has united with over 600 other universities toincorporate sustainable practices in all acets o education and campus lie. VCUs Of ce oSustainability eorts include both the Medical College o Virginia Campus (MCV) and the

Monroe Park Campus. Te Of ce o Sustainability also extends its eorts to the universityssatellite acilities, such as the School o Social Work in Northern Virginia, the Sports Backersstadium in Richmond, Va., the VCU Rice Center on the James River in Charles City County and

VCU Qatar, the School o Arts campus in Doha, Qatar.

VCU implemented a sustainability curriculum to aid in promoting sustainability as an interdisci-plinary ocus. Te curriculum is designed to acilitate cooperative teaching and research with the

VCU International partner institutions. A plan has also been adopted to implement

sustainability academics across VCU and will oer more sustainability courses to bothundergraduate and graduate students. Students can enroll in sustainability related courses inenvironmental studies, and urban and regional planning, as well as seek to obtain a certicatein sustainability rom the School o Business. In an eort to increase awareness o sustainabilityeorts at the university, VCU has included sustainability teachings in student orientations, student move-in and move-out, the Governor Conerence on Energy, America Recycles Day,Recyclemania and Earth Day.

Te Of ce o Sustainability is run by sustainability experts including Jacek Ghosh, director o

sustainability; Steven Heintz, recycling and reuse coordinator; Carl Beckelheimer, energy

manager; and Jordan Starbuck, sustainability coordinator. VCUs Sustainability Committeeconsists o members that represent dierent areas o the VCU community, and their mission isto urther support campus sustainability initiatives.

    KEY PUBLICS

Te key public targeted by this campaign is the VCU student body.

Furthermore, this public is broken into two sub-classications: students with on-campus hous-ing and students with o-campus housing. While o-campus students still signicantly impactthe amount o energy used in VCU buildings, the average on-campus students individual behav-iors have a greater direct consumption eect on campus energy usage.

    SITUATION ANALYSIS

    Strengths & Opportunities

Te strengths and opportunities show the Go Green eect will serve as a better contribution tothe overall methods currently practiced by the University. Te Of ce o Sustainability shouldemploy specic tactics to attain objectives. In order to implement what could be the strength, wemust rst have changes in behavior to benet rom the opportunities.

    Weakness & Treats

Weaknesses and threats include lack o interest and knowledge among the student population.Students and aculty are unaware o the benets o reduced energy consumption. Treats stemrom economic recession; students and parents are unable to invest in more expensive greenproducts. Students and parents cannot physically see the benets o energy ef cient lightingand green products.

    Opportunity Statement

Te Of ce o Sustainability is working towards making Virginia Commonwealth Universityclimate-neutral by 2050. Virginia Commonwealth Universitys Of ce o Sustainability needs all

students to contribute by cutting the amount o electricity use within the university. Te o-ce should seize communication opportunities to raise awareness and engage the VCU studentpopulation. Tis campaign oers specic strategies and tactics to change student behaviors in aneort to reduce student electricity consumption.

    1.1 SOCIAL MEDIA

    Facebook & umblr

Facebook is a very important component in any social media campaign. Te reason or our lacko ocus on improving the Facebook page is because the Of ce o Sustainability has done a great

job maintaining and updating the page. Everything rom the types o posts to the amount otimes posting has been well executed. Te same is visible on the umblr page with the postsbeing cohesive with the inormation posted on Facebook. Our main ocus will be to improve thewitter account to maximize the potential on all social media platorms.

witterMany students in todays technology-savvy world receive news and stay connected through so-

cial media outlets like witter. Updating witter several times a week to keep students involvedand maintain an active social media presence by the Of ce o Sustainability is crucial.Inormation used in the tweets can include:

    Facts about saving energy

ips on how to save electricity and money in your apartment and dorm Fun acts about electricity and energy Photos Upcoming events through the Of ce o Sustainability and environmental events inRichmond

    Contests or students

    News

Te Of ce o Sustainability also needs to develop its own hashtag to use or tweets. Somepossible hashtags are #electricity, #vcu, #vcugoesgreen and #lightsout.

Using other hashtags that spread the message o the Of ce o Sustainability to VCU campus andcommunity is also important. Hashtags like #vcu and #rva can help increase ollowers and spread

    o the message.

Some good times to tweet are in the morning and at the beginning o the workday, over the

lunch hour and in the early evening as the workday is ending. During those times there is a greatopportunity to reach more ollowers on witter.

Using witter to engage students beore events is critical to build awareness and involvement. For example, witter could be used to promote the upcoming dorm competition. A hashtag couldbe specically created or that event. VCU could collaborate with U o R to use the same hashtag

and reach both student populations to increase engagement and riendly competition.

    1.2 FRESHMAN ORIENTATION

In order to increase students awareness and to make them more energy-conscious, starting withthe incoming reshman class would have the largest impact. Gaining this crucial student involve-ment rom the beginning o their time at VCU is necessary to make VCU more environmentallyriendly.

Tis is the current list o what new students should bring to campus as distributed by the VCU

    Housing Department:

Alarm clock, blankets, bed and bath linens, desk lamp, fashlight, iron and ironing board, electric powerstrips with surge protectors, pillows, plants, posters, stereo, toiletries, wastebasket and non-fammabledecorative items.

Students living in apartment-style residence halls should bring dishes, kitchen utensils, pots and pans, toilet plunger and kitchen and bathroom cleaning supplies (including sponge mop and sponges). We rec-ommend that students contact their uture apartment-mate(s) about possible duplication o items prior

    to arrival on campus.

One compact rerigerator (1.6 amps or 4 cubic eet, UL approved) and one small microwave oven (0.8cubic eet, 755 watts, UL approved) per room are allowed in the 9-month residence halls.

Te University provides a 2-door, 2.9 cu. t. rerigerator/reezer in rooms in Cabaniss Hall and theGladding Residence Center Phase II (GRC2), and a ull-size rerigerator is supplied in the GRC Phase III(GRC3) suites. Again, it is recommended that students contact their uture roommate(s) about possible

duplication o items prior to arrival on campus.

Some things that the Of ce o Sustainability could recommend be added to the list include:

Energy saving/LED light bulbs (or lamps, dorm etc)

    Energy star printer/laptop

Buy and energy star microwave and compact rerigerator OR share with a room

    mate so uses less electricity.

    Bike

Instead o just bringing a power strip, bring a smart strip which saves more energyhttp://www.amazon.com/Smart-Strip-Protector-Autoswitching-echnology/dp/

    1.2 FRESHMAN ORIENTATION

Other Suggestions or Orientation and New Students:

Building relationships in the community can add to inormation and suggestions

provided to the incoming students. For example, making new students aware o Ram

Bikes and the resources they oer can help students be more energy conscious. Working

with Ram Bikes to increase students awareness would be benecial to achieve the goal.

Te Of ce o Sustainability can also reach out to area merchants and see i any would be

willing to oer VCU students a discount or any savings i they purchase energy-saving

appliances or light bulbs to satisy the updated the What to Bring list or new

students. Ace Hardware o Pleasants Hardware are two local businesses that may be

interested in collaborating with the University. Te Of ce o Sustainability couldcollaborate with local businesses and then oer saving to students in the orm o

coupons in the back o the student handbook or other VCU material given to new

    students.

Oer a reward or pledge to new students i they choose not to bring all/any o the small

appliances like microwaves, dorm rerigerators, etc. Leaving these items at home or

sharing them with a roommate would help save electricity by using less power in the

dorms. Also, students would also not have to remember to unplug them when not in use

or the hassle o moving them into the dorm.

Northwestern University oers an example o modiying the new student list:http://purpleisgreen.wordpress.com/sustainable-packing/

Contact the VCU Housing department or collaboration and modication o the new student list.

    1.3 LIGHT SWITCH DECALS

Along with the knowledge that individuals willreceive about energy conservation, it wouldbenet the campaign i visual reminders o the

VCU Goes Green iReduce Campaign were alsoavailable in the orm o decals, either or the wall, the light plate itsel, or both.

Custom decals were created by the Graphics teamto encourage behavior change through engag-ing copy. With trendy styles and popular memesincorporated into the design, the decals are meantto be placed on walls above and around light switches as un reminders to turn the lights o as

individuals leave an empty classrooms and rest rooms on campus. Tese decals can also be givenaway to interested persons at the iReduce Sustainability able during next years SustainabilityDay.

Aside rom the decals, glow-in-the-dark stencil designs have been created to spray paint on towalls under light switches with the simple message o Tank You. urning o lights in order toread the message creates an engaging experience or VCU community members and reinorces asense o pride and participation in the universitys energy conservation eorts.

    September 2013:

TRUE or FALSE?Do cell phone and/or iPod chargers continue to use electricity, even ater the device has beendisconnected?TRUE: In order to stop the ow o electricity completely, the charger must be unplugged.

Fact:A small LCD V will use only 60 watts, but large plasma screens can use around 450watts. Remember the larger the screen the more watts it will use!

DID YOU KNOWDaylight savings time was originally started in an eort to conserve electricity inactories, by adjusting operating hours to allow the actory to be lit by natural light

    instead o articial lighting?

Other hints, tips, and un acts:

Leave your computer in sleep mode, and it will continue to use small amounts o

electricity. Most computers have an energy saving mode. Look in your computersoptions menus, and use the energy-saving options when possible.

When warming small amounts o ood, a microwave can save a third o the power o a

Some kind o incentive program or students, like earn points and turn them in or something. Creatingsome new signs and make students more aware o current programs. Maybe sponsor day trips to dier-ent places and doing clean-up eorts or like a park, stream etc.

More energy e cient lighted rooms (motion sensors) like the ones in West Grace South Dorm

Allowing students to see how reducing electricity use directly applies to them.

Installing solar panels on buildings, recyclable ood wrappers/containers, incentive programs

Form a club and throw events to advocate energy conservation.

More recycling eorts in the buildings. I see a lot o recycling location outside on campus but notmany inside

Using less lights at the library.

    Solar panels, wind turbines, etc.

I think possibly converting the dorms to be more energy convertible. I havent seen many recycling e-orts, just large trash cans in the laundry room.

More awareness or conservation o electricity and recycling.

Making an eort to inorm students about energy conservation, and take legitimate steps to curb theuniversitys energy use and carbon ootprint.

o see the o ce o sustainability actually carry out the suggestions in the Energ y E ciency SprintChallenge

Waterless urinals, solar powered street lights on campus, green roos, pervious pavement, moreenergy conservation demonstrations/displays.

    Composting!

    APPENDIX B

    14. What is one way youd like to see VCU advocate/participate in energy conservation? (cont.)

Te classrooms do not need to be so warm in the winter or cold in the summer: 82 in the summer and 68or 65 in the winter, spring and all are a little tricky

Build many more bike racks and air pumps

Retrots o older buildings or energy conservation

Recycling in all classrooms - better recycling in art buildings.

Solar energy panels. urning o lights at night.

Less plastic bags rom ood service areas; recycle plastic utensils and bottle caps

Dual Flush handles on all bathrooms, not just some. More variety o recycling bins around campus, notjust bottles and o ce paper - next to every trash can

    Green buildings

urning o computers in computer labs or in the library when not in use Putting a timer or lights in allthe buildings on both campuses

Id like to see a bigger push or Energy conservation on campus

Rootop gardens. Solar panels. More HONESLY local ood, no more o that shitty Aramark shit. Giveback to the community that youre overtaking.

Composting, easier ways to recycle, cutting down waste

Oering more alternative transportation throughout the metro area. I would love to take moreadvantage o GRC but I work and live in Midlothian and there are only trips to and rom Chestereldduring rush hour. I there was a lunch time/early aternoon route back and orth to Midlothian I wouldride GRC to and rom school.

LEED certied buildings and exhibit o LEED practices used.

Motion or time sensitive lights. For instance the lights in dorm halls would automatically dim orquiet hours or late in the evening and bathroom lights would be motion activated during early morninghours such as 1AM-7AM. Sometimes in my hall we turn o the lights because theyre too bright whenwe wake up- youd save energy and make mornings more pleasant.

    APPENDIX B

    15. What does it take to motivate you to reduce your energy usage?

I I had more knowledge on the subject

Save me money. Not everything should be so expensive to go ree (light bulbs, organic eating, etc)

Id like to see exactly where my energy use goes to (maybe at the end o my electricity bill).

Seeing others doing it as well, so the eect will be greater

Getting my spouse more involved. His uninvolvment deters my involvement.

Make energy saving appliances more accessible

    Prizes, nancial incentive

Education on how to reduce energy usage.

I would like more hard acts.

    A bit more convenience.

Aordable alternatives to current methods ( i.e. simpler solar kits ).

    ips to do so

    Accessibility o proper tools

I I was able to see how it would directly aect me, instead o only aecting VCU

    Convenience

I Im reminded o the harmul eects o what would happen i we dont conserve energy.

Seeing the direct impact between wasting resources and its eects on the environment.

    Have it make economic sense.

Statistics o reduction in carbon emissions or how much money saved.

More convenience. My husband and I both work ull time and attend school ull time so time isextremely limited or us.

Available alternatives. My commute is over ten miles each way - too ar to bike or walk - andcomputer use is imperative or my major. Meeting with study groups could be more e cient with betteronline support.

    APPENDIX B

    16. Are there any sustainability issues not addressed in this survey that you think are important?

Needs to promote sustainable energy over ossil uel consumption

    Composting

Using more local products and partnering with local businesses to reduce transportation costs VCU isdoing a great job but we need to keep pushing orward!

Knowledge o education o alternate methods o lie habits. For example, hang drying clothes versus us-ing the dryer.

Reducing waste and consumption: reduce amount o plastic, trash, paper and water used

Pollution and Greenhouse gases would be a good topic to address and inorm other students o.

VCU probably uses more energy on A/C and heat than any other single use. While it might cost incomort, it is neither cheap, e cient, nor environmentally conscious to keep these massive struc-tures rosty cool all summer long.

No, but I think that so many college students need to be more aware o when they leave lights andVs on when they leave the room or hours. Its a huge waste o electricity!

Automatic doors or public rest rooms

    Buying locally-grown ood

    Reduction

Widespread public transportation in the Richmond Metro Area

Recycling in Dorms- there isnt a bin or papers and cardboard and such, only one or bottlesI did not see any mention o Reuse o resources. Te installation o water bottle relling ountainswas an excellent idea, particularly as they display the number o plastic bottles saved. I would be inter-ested to know i there are other similar Re-use programs in place.

    GLOSSARY

AASHETe university signed the American College and University Presidents Climate Commit-

ment in April 2008, along with more than 600 universities, pledging to drat a climate actionplan by 2010 and achieving carbon neutrality by 2050. In addition, VCU raised its grade on theCollege Sustainability Report Card, issued by the Sustainability Endowments Institute, rom a C-in 2008 to an A- in 2011.

Carbon FootprintA carbon ootprint is the measure o the impact human activities have on the environ-

ment in terms o the amount o greenhouse gases directly or indirectly produced, measured inunits o carbon dioxide equivalents. Te concept o the carbon ootprint originated rom the eco-logical ootprint that was rst calculated in 1992 by Dr. William Rees at the University o BritishColumbia in Vancouver, Canada. Te carbon ootprint is a subset o the ecological ootprint.

Compact Fluorescent LightsCFLs are very energy ef cient, using approximately one quarter o the energy compared

to traditional incandescent bulbs. CFLs also have a very long liespan, typically 6000- 15,000hours compared to the 750-1,000 hours or a normal incandescent bulb, so they save energy andreplacements over many years.http://energystar.supportportal.com/ics/support/KBAnswer.asp?questionID=15105.

DominionDominion is one o the nations largest producers and transporters o energy, natural

gas and electric. Dominion provides services to approximately 50 million homes and business inthe Midwest, Mid-Atlantic and Northeast regions o the U.S., where 40 percent o the nations

    energy is consumed.https://www.dom.com/about/index.jsp.

Ecological FootprintA measurement o human demand on the Earths ecosystems so that it is possible to

estimate how much o the earth (or how many plant Earths) it would take to support humanity ieverybody lived a given liestyle. In 2006, humanitys total ecological ootprint was estimated at1.4 planet Earths.

Eco-FriendlyAlso known as environmentally riendly or nature riendly, eco-riendly reers to

goods and services that inict minimal harm on the environment.

Ef cacyTe amount o energy service or useul energy delivered per unit o energy input. Oten

used in reerence to lighting systems, where the visible light output o a luminary is relative topower input, ef cacy is expressed in lumens per watt. Te higher the ef cacy value, the higherthe energy ef ciency.

Energy StarRated products that meet the energy ef ciency guidelines specied by the U.S.

    GLOSSARY

Energy DashboardTe VCU energy dashboard displays the amount o energy consumed by campus build-

ings, shown in kilowatt- hours. It provides students, aculty and employees with a better un-derstanding o ongoing processes to reduce utility usage and greenhouse gas emissions throughvarious methods.http://www.buildingdashboard.com/clients/vcu/.

Environmental CostTe monetary impact rom the negative environmental eects resulting rom the choices

    we make.

Fuel CellA technology that uses an electromechanical process to convert energy into electrical

power. Oten powered by natural gas, uel cell power is oten cleaner than grid connected powersources. Hot water is produced as a by-product.

GreenTe adjective used to describe people, behaviors, products, policies, standards, processes,

places, movements, or ideas that promote, protect, restore, or minimize damage to the environ-ment.

Micro GridA smaller dened portion o the electric grid, located in the School o Engineerings West

Hall on VCU campus. Te micro grid will allow VCU and Dominion to test energy-ef ent tech-nology and share power consumption data to predict uture maintenance costs based on equip-

ment energy analysis and to maximize energy conservation. Te project will make energy adjust-ments to the building, lights, and equipment to save energy and costs, up to 4% annually.

RecyclingTe collection and reprocessing o materials into new products as a way to reduce re-

source use and the amount o waste that enters landlls.

STARSSustainability racking, Assessment, and Rating System (SARS) is a transparent, sel-

reporting ramework or colleges and universities to measure their sustainability perormance.VCU has been working or a year to ll out SARS with a current provisional score o 46.86,Silver. Te SARS report can be updated annually, but it is good or up to three years.
