Welcome to the finals of Ireland’s Young Filmmaker of the Year 2014. Today is about filmmakers, and
filmmakers are very special people. Filmmakers are people who routinely do the impossible. The
moment you write those terrifying words, ‘Fade in’; you’ve committed yourself to smuggling something from
out of the depths of your imagination into the real world. When you pick up a camera, you make the decision
to look at the world differently and frame the world to tell your story. As you sit alone, trying to fit the footage
together, heart-broken because you needed that shot that you didn’t get, you are transforming bits of data into
something miraculous.
This has been Fresh’s most competitive year. We’ve seen brave storytelling, challenging subjects and
bold use of the medium of film. This year you have given us psychopathic killers who make us laugh, tense
encounters that make us hold our breath and unlikely heroes who give us hope. It’s a year of wonderful
animation, documentary and drama. We are privileged to exhibit your work.
Our festival celebrates the enormous talent embodied by young filmmakers, in Ireland and from around
the world. We welcome all of you from home and abroad to Limerick, Ireland’s City of Culture in 2014, for a
programme of films at the cutting edge of cinema. And remember, if you like a film, the director is probably
here. They might even want to work with you...
Filmmaking is constantly evolving, and in the 18 years since Fresh began, the medium has changed
completely. We have come a long way from pulling a suitcase of VHS tapes from screening to screening. Fresh
is committed to always evolving to provide the best platform for young filmmakers. Our passion for what we
do comes from the passion you show in your films.
As more and more people pick up cameras, it is important to remember what distinguishes a successful film.
Storytelling, visual flair, enriching audio and engaging performances are key. Getting that last interview that
you need, or sourcing costumes, or trawling the internet for the perfect sound effect, these are the marks of a
filmmaker. Editing and re-editing to get the film tighter, and even asking if that scene you love is really helping
the overall piece. The magic ingredient that makes a film successful is just this: effort. Films are born of rewrites,
late nights, inventive compromises and many, many favours. It’s blood, sweat and tears spent for a few precious
minutes of coloured lights on a screen and sounds through speakers. For a filmmaker, it’s absolutely worth it.
Of course, after today, the work doesn’t stop. Not only do you need to work out what to do with you film
next, but there’s the matter of what to make after it. Your most important film is always the next one, so start
outlining the script, scout some locations and tidy your desktop. Think about buying that piece of equipment
you need or learning a new piece of software. Do whatever it takes to impress the audience, but tell the story
you want to tell. Do the impossible. Make movies.
So sit back, relax and enjoy your day of screenings.
Thank you.
