DHL-B&Q’s Edward Fowell wins Volvo Trucks DriverChallenge 2012

The Volvo Trucks Driver Challenge 2012 has been won by DHL - B&Qdriver Edward Fowell. On hearing the announcement that he had won the gruelling fuel economyfocused final he declared himself to be: “Overwhelmed, it’s marvellous. Icouldn’t believe it,” he said, adding modestly. “I knew I’d done good, butnot that good.”Edward, who has been driving an LGV licence for nine years, drives aVolvo FH article for DHL on the B&Q contract. After being presented with the Volvo Trucks Driver Challenge 2012 trophyby Volvo Trucks Commercial Truck Director Ian Mitchell, he described thecompetition as ‘very tough’ and the route as “very difficult, with lots of hillsand hairpin bends.”Edward said that the secret to his success in taking the top spot from his

fellow nine competitors in the final was down to forward planning, coasting and keeping the truck rolling. All of which wereaided by the I-Shift gearbox which he described as ‘The Best.’From its base at Volvo dealer Irish Commercial’s state of the art premises at Oranmore, near Galway, the Driver Challengefinal itself was held over a tough 132 kilometre (82 mile) route around the West of Ireland counties of Galway and Mayo.In addition to heavy traffic on the Galway ring road dual carriageway, the route also took in rural roads around part ofConnemara. These included a vicious 1 in 4 (25%) gradient uphill double hairpin on the R345 between Cornamona andClonbur, Co. Galway. The competition also had to navigate their way through the Saturday traffic on the congested mainstreet in Cong, Co. Mayo. The 10 finalists represented companies ranging in size from independent hauliers like Bacton Transport, David Watson andCJ Carruthers, to supermarkets ASDA and Sainsbury’s and logistics operators such as DHL - B&Q and NFT.The competitors in the final drove five identical Volvo FM11-450 6x2 tractor units coupled to a fleet of fully-freighted newtrailers kindly loaned by Stobart Group. The identical trailers were loaded to within a 0.05% of each other and a Volvo Trucks Driver Development trainer rode ineach cab to ensure competitors followed the route. The whole event was timed to coincide with the final in-port competition of the Volvo Ocean Race - the round-the-worldyacht race - which was also underway in Galway the same weekend.

Council back PoolbegstanceThe Government’s new waste policy confirmsthe need for the incinerator at Poolbeg in Dublin, according to Dublin City Council. Assistant citymanager Séamus Lyons said the Poolbeg plant“will be needed as long as waste available in themarket continues to be landfilled”. His commentsfollow publication of the new national wastepolicy by Minister for the Environment PhilHogan. Under the policy document A ResourceOpportunity, the number of waste-planningregions for the State will be reduced from 10 tothree, resulting in economies of scale and“greater efficiencies in the delivery of planning”,according to the Minister. Mr Lyons said thiswould mean even more waste would beavailable in the Dublin region to go to Poolbegrather than to landfill. “There are no alternativesto Poolbeg available,” he said, adding that 1.19million tonnes of waste was generated in theDublin region in 2010. Mr Hogan said landfillcapacity would be reached within 12 years andthe policy aims to reduce the amount of wastegenerated. He confirmed that private sectoroperators would be allowed to operate freely butinsisted they would have to adhere to strict newstandards of service. Operators are charged anominal licence fee, currently €1,000 per permit, which does not reflect the profits they aregenerating. Higher fees will contribute toenforcement of the permit system. The policy, accepted by Cabinet, overturns the programmefor government commitment to allow localauthorities to control which private companiescollect waste.Mr Hogan insisted operators would have toincentivise their customers to adopt moresustainable behaviour and would also have to bemuch more transparent about their charges.

Ford on top of CV market for2012

In a marketdown nearly 5percent year todate, Fordlooks set toretain its title asthe numberone brand inthe commercialvehicle (CV)market inIreland for2012. Figures

for the sector recently released by the Society of the Irish MotorIndustry (SIMI) show that Ford had sales of 1,647 vehicles up to theend of June. This compares with 1,475 for VW and 885 for Renault. The overall CV market for the six month period to the end of June2012 totalled 7,789 units, down 382 units (or 4.6 percent) from atotal of 8,171 sales for the same period last year. With a 21.1percent share of the 2012 sales, Ford managed to grow its share ofthe market, up from 19.7 percent in 2011.“In a still weak market, it is heartening that Ford is maintaining andeven growing its share,” said Ciaran McMahon, CV Sales &Marketing Manager for Ford Ireland. “The backbone of our successin the CV sector continues to be the Transit which has beenIreland’s number one van from when it arrived in Ireland nearly 50years ago”.Transit topped the charts in its segment with sales of 928 units sofar this year. Transit was followed by Renault Traffic / Master range640 units and VW Transporter / Crafter range with 438. With thelaunch of the all new Transit Custom model here in October, it lookslike Transit will continue to dominate the sales charts for 2012 fullyear and into 2013.Ford also achieved the number one spot in several other CVsegments this year. Transit Connect (Long Wheel Base), KugaCommercial and Fiesta Van each topped their segment sales chart.“We are delighted with the success of our Kuga Commercial whichhas found great favour with a wide range of business customerswho love its sporty looks but also appreciate its 4x4 capability forwhen you need that little bit more traction in your daily job”,concluded McMahon.

Volvo Trucks introduces new FH Series“A truck that will carry us far into the future.”That is how Claes Nilsson, President of VolvoTrucks, summarises the new versions of theVolvo FH and Volvo FH16 that will bereleased shortly. On Wednesday September 5th Volvo Truckswill launch new versions of the best-sellingVolvo FH and the prestigious Volvo FH16."For almost two decades, the Volvo FHSeries has provided haulage companies withsafety, efficient transport and high quality. Now, with our new replacements, we are going to be even better in all three areas," says Claes Nilsson, President VolvoTruck Corporation.

SETTING A NEW STANDARDNever before has Volvo conducted so many tests among drivers and operators with the aim of ensuring that the newmodel meets the highest requirements. The result is a product that not only meets today's requirements; it also offersproperties that nobody has previously experienced in a truck."It really is our customers who have influenced the end-product and I'm convinced that we're setting a new benchmark forthe entire truck industry," says Claes Nilsson.

"MORE LIKE A CAR THAN A TRUCK"One prioritised goal in the development process was to create a truck with the market's best handling. Several structuralimprovements give the new Volvo FH series a stable and flexible design - something that can be seen in a film entitled‘The Ballerina Stunt’ on www.volvotrucks.com/fh - where slackline walker Faith Dickey walks a tightrope between twotrucks travelling at 80 km/h (50 mph)"We've surpassed our expectations. The Volvo FH is more like a car than a truck when it comes to precise response andconfidence-inspiring directional stability," says Martin Palming, Product Manager at Volvo Trucks.

‘REVOLUTIONARY’ FRONT SUSPENSIONWith the new Volvo FH series comes a new Independent Front Suspension (IFS) system for left-hand drive heavy trucks, initially"The Volvo FH without IFS will be number one on the market, but IFS is all set to revolutionise handling in the truck world. The Volvo FH with IFS will have the world's best road manners," says Martin Palming.Independent front suspension means that each front wheel is suspended separately from the other so it does not affectthe movement of the other wheel. Since both front wheels move independently, the result is gentler, more settled progresson the road. Now, because movements are not transmitted from one wheel to the other, the sense of precision and controlalso increases.

LAUNCH EVENT ON SEPTEMBER 5THThe world premiere and official launch of the Volvo FH Series will be held on September 5 th at 9pm CET in Gothenburgwith parallel events being held in Madrid, Birmingham, Paris, Rotterdam and Brussels. In addition, you can follow theevent live on the Internet, via www.volvotrucks.com/fhInterest in the launch event is immense. For obvious reasons, according to Claes Nilsson. "For more than 15 years nowthe Volvo FH has been a reliable growth engine for both Volvo Trucks and haulage companies the world over. The newVolvo FH will play the same significant role. It's an innovative truck that puts the driver in firm focus while at the same timeallowing operators to do the best business possible. It's a truck that's going to carry us far into the future."

Sweden to allow largerNorwegian trucksNorway’s trucking industry has reached an agreement withSweden that will permit Norwegian trucks with a tonnagein excess of 40 tonnes to operate cross-border routes anddeliveries without the imposition of fines and penalties.Road haulage industry organisations in Denmark andFinland are also expected to reach separate agreementswith Sweden in the near future to overcome problems thatarose when Swedenen forced stricter EU long-trailertonnage rules in July. Nordic truckers complained that theirtransports in Swedenwere covered by a formal pan-Nordicagreement reached in 2006 and which excluded themfrom theEU-directive. "The change in the rules caused a lot offrustration. We have spent three weeks negotiating asettlement. The changes threatened to create extra costsfor Norwegian truckers. They also raised concerns aboutthe value of transporting goods by road through Sweden,"said Guttorm Tysnes, a spokesman for NorgesLastebileier-Forbund, Norway’s hauliers association. Thebackground tothe implementation of new haulage tonnage rules emergedafter a district court in Sweden convicted a Swedish truckdriver for being in charge of a long-trailer vehicle which thecourt deemed was carrying an excess load. Sweden’sRoad Traffic Police Department interpreted the ruling asapplying to all foreign trucks travelling through Sweden, and police stops were organised to enforce EU regulationsgoverning length and load, which is a maximum of 18,75metres and 40 tonnes. Truckers in Norway, Finland andDenmark were incensed by the Swedish action, whichthey felt breached the terms of the special regionalhaulage agreements that allowed Nordic truck drivers tocarry heavier loads on longer vehicles than was permittedin the EU rules."The conflict is now resolved. It can sometimes takeseveral years to solve these types of conflicts, but Nordiccooperation worked in this instance. The alternative wouldhave meant costly investments by trucking firms andindependents to upgrade their fleet," said Tysnes.

Thefirst clients to use the company’s new mobile veterinary unitunder the scheme will be two cats originating from Thailand. The development follows changes in European legislationrelating to the movement of pet animals within the EU, aswell as international moves to and from EU countries.Originally, in December 2011, EFL International wasauthorised by the Irish Department of Agriculture, Food andMarine, to operate as a carrier of pets imported into Irelandfrom other EU member states, but only using a governmentveterinary clinic. This allows EFL International to providefull document and animal examination of pets arriving fromcountries considered to be of high risk for animal diseases, services that to date were only available at oneGovernment-approved veterinary clinic six kilometres fromDublin Airport. EFL managing director, Eddie Mullin, says:“With our government approval, EFL is now the firstcompany in Ireland that is able to manage the completeimportation process for pets, from all parts of the world.“This includes customs clearance, veterinary examinationand documentation checks to ensure a safe and speedyrelease of the animal to its owner. Driving test prospectsdepend on where youliveThere is a stark geographical variation in driving testpass rates. Official rates have revealed that passrates in the driving test vary greatly depending onwhere you do your test. The significant variations inpass and fail rates appear in an unpublished RoadSafety Authority report, which were disclosed by theIrish Independent. Coach operators call for fuelexcise duty rebateThe Coach Tourism and Transport Council is asking for asignificant rebate on excise duty on fuel. The Council says risingfuel costs may result in the loss of jobs in the tourism sectorand that the beleaguered coach tourism industry – similar to thehaulage sector - cannot sustain itself, given the cost of diesel. They argue that the high price of fuel has eroded theircompetitiveness and that an inability to absorb these on goingincreases will lead to tourists choosing coach tour holidays incheaper destinations. The CCTC is calling on the Governmentto re-introduce the excise duty rebate, which would enable themto recoup 30 cent for every litre of diesel purchased. CEO GerryMullins points out that Irish coach tour companies are losing outto providers from the North and Britain.

IRHA warns that morehaulage firm closures willoccurThe Irish Road Haulage Association has warned that while therecent announcement of the closure of Target Express is veryconcerning it is only a reflection of the current state ofemergency which exists within the Irish road haulage industry inIreland. With the loss of almost four hundred jobs associatedwith Target Express, the IRHA fears that unless Governmentstem the tide of ever increasing fuel prices there will bethousands more job losses before Christmas. President of theIRHA Eoin Gavin stated after the announcement “The industryis in dire straits at the present time. The price of diesel is rapidlyincreasing and the Government are very slow to react andprevent further closures of transport company’s and the loss ofassociated jobs”.Mr Gavin went on to say “The current workingenvironment is simply not sustainable for our members and wecannot and will not be able to maintain the current level ofemployment within the sector. There are 50,000 people, inclusive of ancillary jobs, employed within the industry andwithout the introduction of an Essential User Fuel Rebate (EUR)for tax compliant, licensed operators that level of employmentwill drop dramatically over the coming months. Governmentintervention is urgently required in order to continue to facilitateour export led economic recovery.”

Volvo Trucks’ stunt is a big hit on YoutubeA young woman walks a slackline between two Volvo trucks driving at full speed: not even in Hollywood has this stuntever been attempted. Now the film about the stunt is a massive success on YouTube and within nine days, more than 4.8million people have seen the film. The woman on the line is American slackliner Faith Dickey. She is the world record-holder in highlining, a young sport which is all about walking on a line as high and far as possible. "I'm used to heights, long lines and lines that sway in the wind, but those lines are firmly anchored to cliff-faces. Walking a line attached to twomoving points is something quite different," says Faith Dickey.Never been done beforeWhen the Hollywood team behind the film first heard the idea they were dumbstruck."And here was I thinking that every imaginable stunt had already been done. The fact is that nobody has ever beforewalked a line between two moving trucks. It felt like an enormous challenge, and it's challenges that get me going," saysPeter Pedrero, who normally works with stunts in films such as James Bond, Harry Potter and Pirates of the Caribbean.Oscar-nominated director behind the filmThe film's director is Oscar-nominated Henry Alex Rubin, whose feature film Disconnect starring Sweden's AlexanderSkarsgård is currently playing in cinemas."My favourite kind of shoot is when someone tells me something is impossible to film. When I hear no, it makes me wantto move mountains," he says"Faith Dickey is the same way. Tell her "no" and it will fuel her. She humbled and amazed myself and the entire crew withher courage. This stunt started off as a way to test the precision of Volvo's massive 16-wheeled trucks and ended upbeing just as much a testament to guts and courage." adds Henry Alex Rubin. Not for the recklessThe film was recorded on an almost completed new stretch of motorway in Croatia, with no oncoming traffic. The stuntlooks very dramatic but, as you'd expect, safety was of paramount importance for Volvo Trucks, as well as for stunt co-ordinator Peter Pedrero."Stunts are not for the reckless. Safety always comes first. You have to prepare for the worst possible scenario at all timesand plan for how to deal with it. Preparation down to the tiniest detail, meticulous planning - they're absolutely vital,"reveals Peter Pedrero.Superior handling made it possbleThe driving force behind the film is Volvo Trucks. The aim is to highlight the driveability and superior handling of thecompany's latest truck model - the new Volvo FH. The stunt was possible to carry out due to the excellent stability andhandling of the new Volvo FH. It was thanks to this stability that both trucks could maintain a steady gap throughout thestunt. (See an interview with one of the drivers on YouTube - see below)"It's not enough simply to say that we are good. We wanted to demonstrate just how much progress we've made in thearea of both driveability and handling," says Ulf Nordqvist, project manager for the new Volvo FH series. The world premiere and official launch of the Volvo FH Series will be held on September 5th at 8pm GMT and the launchevent will be webcast live at www.volvotrucks.com/fh.

Motorists reminded ofnew seatbelt offencesGardai have reminded Irish motorists of new offencesregarding the wearing of seatbelts. Motorists will now besubject to seven new penalty point offences whichrecently into force - mainly relating to seatbelts. From now on, drivers will be penalised for allowingpassengers under 17 years of age to travel without aseatbelt. Also, children under three must be properlyrestrained, and must not be placed in a rear-facing seatin the front of a vehicle with an airbag. Garda patrolvehicles will apparently be out in force to monitor driverbehaviour and to hand out the relevant punishment tothose who break the law.

New car registrationsdown by 12%The registration of new cars is down by 12% so far in2012, with a fall of 10,093 up to the end of July.71,065 new cars were registered from January to July, with July sales at 4,431 - up 352 on last year. However, there was an abnormal spike in registrationson July 31st, when five times the daily average numberof cars was registered. Thus, the monthly total wentfrom a potential 11% drop to a 10% increase.Motorcheck.ie’s co-founder Shane Teskey told The IrishTimes: “The abnormal spike in registrations at the end oflast month could signal an increase in tacticalregistrations as part of the manufacturers’ salesstrategy. “When overall sales drop below a certainthreshold, tactical registrations can make a significantimpact on an individual brand’s market share. “Pre-registered cars with little or no mileage may offer anattractive alternative to the consumer who lacks theconfidence to purchase brand new. This can meansome great offers on ‘nearly new’ cars sitting onforecourts.”

Alan Armstrong Transport “Learner drivers, keep outof my way” Say Third ofDrivers

A survey of Irish drivers has shown that nearly a third ofrespondents (29 percent) feel that learner drivers are “justabout bearable so long as they don’t get in my way”. Thatwas one of the key findings from the survey which wascarried out by Semperit Tyres Ireland as part of thecompany’s Semperit Road-user Courtesy campaign. When asked what irritates them most about learner drivers, some 40 percent of respondents highlighted learners’tendency to get the basics of driving wrong, e.g. stalling attraffic lights, not indicating properly or sloppy lane discipline. Driving too slowly was another bugbear of respondents. Forthis reason, nearly half of drivers (47 percent) say theygenerally look to overtake a learner driver at the firstopportunity rather than be “delayed”. For a significantminority (8 percent), the desire to get past a learner hasmeant that they have in the past driven recklessly toovertake a car with L-plates.Paddy Murphy from Semperit Tyres Ireland said: “Safety isof paramount importance to us in Semperit and that was thereason we carried out the survey. We would urge allexperienced drivers to exercise that bit more caution whenthey encounter a learner on the road. We were dismayed tofind that nearly one in ten drivers have driven recklessly toget past a learner. Our advice to drivers is to stay calm andbe patient – most often, the time gained from overtaking anddriving faster is really negligible”.In what seems like a vicious cycle, nearly three quarters ofrespondents (74 percent) say that during their time aslearner drivers, they found the behaviour of other driversstressful and / or intimidating. Tailgating was highlighted asa regular intimidating tactic of other drivers. Nearly 10percent reported other drivers shouting abuse or giving handsignals during their time as learner drivers. The vast majority of drivers would like to see enforcement ofthe rule whereby learner drivers must be accompanied at alltimes by an experienced driver. 84 percent of respondentssay that it is obvious that this rule is regularly flouted on theroads.Murphy concluded: “Life is stressful enough, let’s reducestress on the roads. If we could all be a little morecourteous on the road, it really will reduce stress andimprove road safety!”

Topaz’ meteoric rise to excellencecontinued on March 15th last when the fuels and convenience retailer stole the show at the 2012 Irish Logistics &Transport Awards gala dinner in Dublin. Topaz took home the Overall Logistics & Transport Excellence Award and theLogistics & Transport Client/Supplier Achievement Award. Richard Curran of RTE’s Dragon’s Den was compere for theprestigious event, which is held annually by the Chartered Institute of Logistics & Transport (CILT). It was attended by350 industry representatives from all over Ireland. The awards attracted over 100 entries, and the judges commented onthe fact that very high standards made it extremely difficult to choose the eventual winners. But it’s clear that the judgeswere in agreement that the Topaz entry was a cut above the rest. Topaz’ Operations Team Leader Mark Koller, who wason hand to receive both awards from CILT president Aidan Murphy, said it was a tremendous achievement for such ayoung company to win the Overall Award. “It’s our first time in the three years of these awards and to receive the OverallAward and we’re absolutely delighted. It’s in our brand DNA and brought to life in our brand tagline “That’s better”. This award is further recognition thatour pursuit of excellence has paid off once again.” As well as a philosophy of continuous improvement in all that they do,Koller puts Topaz’ success down to some other factors also. The Operations Team have a strong focus on innovation. This is demonstrated in their clever and strategic use of a tailored stock management package. The team alsodemonstrate a clear ability to work collaboratively to create efficiencies. They worked with their haulage partnersWincanton and Reynolds to develop a system of careful planning and resourcing to improve fleet utilization while savingcosts. Customer Service is integral to the running of Topaz Business and their World-Class standards are evident yetagain in a recent study carried out by Behaviour and Attitudes. He added: “Ourmanagers and employees are our greatest asset and our success comes from working together in partnership on a dailybasis. These awards recognize the efforts of the 1,500 staff working in 350 Topaz outlets across the country.” TopazEnergy Ltd., which has its headquarters in Clonskeagh, Dublin 4, is Ireland’s largest fuel convenience brand with apresence in every major town across the island of Ireland. 100% Irish owned and managed, Topaz was formed by IonEquity in 2005 when they bought the Irish operations of Shell and Statoil.Topaz is committed to creating a betterexperience for its customers every day. 2012 Annual report shows that Tracs now representsover 90% of Irish tyre complianceThe TRACS 2012 annual report shows that TRACS is successfully maintaining its reputation as Ireland’s first, largest andleading tyre monitoring and compliance scheme. Statistically adjusted figures show overall membership has increasedsignificantly with well over 90% of the sector as a whole now signed up to the TRACS (Tyre Recovery Activity ComplianceScheme). Towards the end of 2011, the number of members in TRACS had reached approximately 630, by company, representingover 750 sites. 84% of producers/importers, 68% of retail outlets, 60% of wholesalers and 82% of waste collectors by unithave now become members of TRACS. Through increased participation in the waste management process, TRACS’members have been positively changing the way the industry as a whole perceives its waste obligations.2011 figures show that 47.59% of waste tyres were crumbed for conversion into saleable products, 11.18% of waste tyreswere exported whole for further treatment and 21.48% were baled. 12.75% were shredded. Most exports (baled andwhole) as well as shredded tyres are usually processed as tyre derived fuel. Over 150k waste tyres were reported bywaste collectors as given to farmers. These figures show good waste management practices of the waste tyres collected.According to TRACS director Fiacra Quinn, “With increased sector compliance has come a wider industry and publicunderstanding of TRACS’ important role in monitoring and tracking the proper channelling of waste tyre material. We callon any still unregistered collectors of end of life tyres to sign up with TRACS and to deal with their waste in an ethical andresponsible manner. TRACS also urges all retailers to deal ONLY with registered and authorised waste collectors and tolook for a RECOVERY CERTIFICATE as proof of authenticity.”Co-operation between TRACS and relevant authorities has steadily increased over the past year, with TRACS reportingmonthly to the local authorities and the DECLG on the entire known supply chain and waste collectors in Ireland, thosewho are participating in TRACS, those not participating, and those farmers who have received tyres. While most responsible operators are now TRACS members, there are still a number of small and transient operators inan increasingly fragmented market. TRACS has made notable inroads in convincing many of these new players to makeresponsible waste management decisions for the benefit of themselves and their customers. TRACS sits on the National Waste Forum representing the industry and shared its expertise in relation to waste tyre man-agement with the Northern Ireland Assembly Environment Committee during 2011. The coach industry has been subject to many changes in recent years, butone Monaghan based company has gone to a whole new level.

Driving to success

When one mentions the name Matthews Coach Hire,or its Managing Director Paddy Matthews, mostpeople now instantly recognise the company which

has featured so prominently in the news in recent times.Having gained a reputation for delivering a top quality

service over the last 17 years, Matthews Coach Hire arecontinuously looking at ways of improving the service offeredto their large customer base.

Founded in 1995 by husband and wife team Paddy andMary Matthews, Matthews employs 72 people and has a fleetof 35 vehicles across commuter, tour and corporate hireservices.

This family-run business, which is headquartered inInniskeen, has gone from strength to strength over the yearsand provides a wide range of services including tours, commuter services, corporate hire and private coach hire.

This has been an interesting year for the company so farand Paddy tells Irish Trucker why they have made TVheadlines and the pages of a host of national newspapers ontwo separate occasions in 2012.

The BBC featured Matthews Coaches in a documentaryearlier this year about their innovative and unique use of thealcolock system.

Matthews is the only Irish transport company to employalcolock devices in its fleet.

Alcolocks are connected to a vehicle's ignition system andactivated by the driver blowing into a tube.

They will prevent a vehicle's engine starting if the driver'salcohol level exceeds a pre-set safety limit. If a driver stopsfor more than 30 minutes, the system will re-set, so they willhave to do another test.

According to Paddy, he made the decision to install thedevices on his coaches after a 2007 bus crash that happenedin England.

“I saw a piece on the news about a driver who crashed inthe UK and it was found that he was over the drink drive limit,”said Paddy.

“It got me thinking about ways of avoiding this and welooked into it from there.”

Four years ago the devices were attached to immobiliser

units on all vehicles in the Matthewsfleet.

The company has 70 drivers and theyare quite happy to have to pass the test,in front of passengers, before they canput the key in the ignition.

“In 2008 we when introduced thealcohol interlock, or alcolock systems asthey are more commonly known, andthey have proven to be a huge success. All our drivers know the standards wedemand and they are comfortable withthat.”

In 2009 they won the Road SafetyAssociation's Leading Lights SafetyAward in recognition of their safetyprocedures such as the alcolock, ongoing driver training, GPS tracking,on-board CCTV use and constant safetychecks.

The following year, Matthews wererewarded for their innovations in greenenergy, becoming the first transportcompany to win the 2010 SustainableEnergy Association of Ireland (SEAI)Energy Efficiency Award.

The company is now upgrading thealcolock devices on its fleet and will beusing the same Canadian technologyemployed by companies such asCarlsberg, who use similar devices onits fleets as well as in the cars ofdirectors.

The alcohol limit set by the companyis below the legal limit of 9microgrammes of alcohol per 100millilitres of breath for professionaldrivers.

The company carries 4,000 people aday and they can feel safe in theknowledge that they are beingtransported around by a safe, dependable driver.

“We practice zero tolerance when itcomes to drink driving. There are three

standards - the legal limit, theprofessional drivers limit and theMatthews limit which is the mostdemanding of the three.

“It costs a lot of money to installalcolocks in every vehicle, but we feelthat it is worth it.”

Transport Minister Leo Varadkar hasrecently floated the idea of introducingalcohol interlocks as a punitivemeasure following drink drivingconvictions, but Paddy believes that thedevices are better served as apreventative measure.

“60% of all fatal accidents in theworkplace are alcohol-related. I sleepat night because I know that we arefocused on safety. Our driversappreciate this and so do ourcustomers,” said Paddy.

“We need the Government to comeon board, and the insurance companiesto acknowledge the benefits ofinstallation in lower premiums.”

Every one of the 35 vehicles

operating on a daily basis for thecompany have the alcohol interlockinstalled and Paddy revealed that itgoes beyond just the companyvehicles.

“When my grandson got his first car, Ihad the alcolock installed in it. I want tobe safe in the knowledge that he willnot be tempted to drink and drive.”

More recently the company made theheadlines once again when MinisterVaradkar publicly congratulated themon being awarded a prestigiouscontract for the world's biggest sportingevent.

A total of 15 coaches have made theirway from south county Monaghan tothe London Olympics.

During the course of the Games,Matthews' coaches and drivers will helpto move athletes to and from variousvenues across the UK.

Minster Varadkar stated thatMatthews Coach Hire was the onlytransport company in the Republic of

KMK are one of the country’sleading electric waste recyclers

Disposing of electrical and electronic waste materialsis a specialised area that only a number ofcompanies in Ireland cater for and in this month's

edition of Irish Trucker, we profile the country's leadingelectrical waste recyclers.

Tullamore based KMK Metals Recycling Ltd was foundedin 1979 and currently employs 50 people. KMK Metals is anEPA licensed end of life metals recovery facility and wespeak to commercial manager Kai Meyer about the successof the company.

Having started off recycling electronic scrap and preciousmetals, the company has expanded over the past 33 yearsto become a leading player in its field of expertise.

“As a specialist recycling company, we provide a secureand regulated recycling service for metals and all classes ofelectrical and electronic waste. We have three differentbusiness divisions, each of which serves a specific area ofthe company's recycling service,” said Kai.

In 1987, KMK became the first company in Ireland toachieve the Quality Management Systems ISO 9001certification from the National Standards Authority of Ireland(NSAI) as they became the standard bearers for metalrecycling.

“We have always strived to provide the best servicepossible for our customers, some of who have been with usfor many years. We feel that providing such a high qualityservice, the company can continue to grow and we arealways looking at ways to improve the business.”

Over the last ten years, KMK has offered a dedicatedWEEE collection and recycling service for all electrical andelectronic waste from businesses, nation-wide, under thebrand-name, WEEE Recycle.

“The KMK Metals 'Desk-Side' WEEE Recycle servicecollects electrical and electronic waste and provides certifiedrecycling in an efficient and cost-effective way throughoutIreland fulfilling the guidelines of the WEEE Directive.”

Kai admits that there is a lot of legislation to be adheredtoo, but he feels that it is there to benefit the industry.

“Every piece of scrap that we handle has to be recordedfrom the moment it is in our possession until it goes torecycling. There is a lot of legislation, but it helps driveeverything and monitors all work carried out.”

Kai also revealed that KMK can now completely recycle allsmall electrical waste items in Tullamore, having installedIreland’s only dedicated electrical waste processing plant in2011. “It has been a very significant investment which has

brought about indigenous processing of small electrical andelectronic waste items such as printers, computers, kettles, toasters, microwaves et al. In more ways than one is this a‘green’ development, firstly showing the treatment of wastehere in Ireland and in doing so using less energy and asmaller carbon footprint than if the waste flowed to the UKand Europe as before. There is a big effort being put in tosource as much material as possible to continue to developand improve.”

The economic recession that has gripped the nation overthe past few years affected every industry and metalrecycling didn't escape as Kai explains.

“This is a volume driven industry and the volume of goods

being recycled has certainly dropped in the last couple ofyears. People are holding on to their white goods for longernow as they are not buying as freely as they use to be.”

Despite this, KMK have invested heavily over the last yearand they are now looking to develop another area of thebusiness which will see them recycle flat screen monitorsand televisions.

“We are currently developing a new line which is nearlycompleted and this will see us recycle the increasing volumeof flat screens, which are replacing the box style CRT’s inour homes and offices.”

KMK Metals has developed and operates the only batterysorting plant in Ireland. By 2016, it will be mandatory for 45%

Around the WorldThe litmus test of a company is in how it adapts and evolves with the times. With its traditional stomping ground here in Ireland having gone belly-up forthe time being at least, First Choice Commercials has successfullyreinvented itself by tapping more and more into the global market. IrishTrucker met managing director Mark O’Neill for an update on the Kildare-based company’s impressive activities.

First Choice Commercials is Ireland’s premier supplierof used trucks, plant and machinery, serving thedomestic market and also specialising in exporting

equipment worldwide (including handling all shipping anddocumentation).

The company’s well-appointed depot is ideally-located atNewhall, Naas, just off the N7 (Junction 10), beside RayO’Brien’s Garage. Here, a huge range of equipment can beviewed at all times. Alternatively, the trucks and plants can beperused online, on the company’s dedicated website,www.firstchoicecommercials.ie.

Indeed, the advent of the cyber age has come at just theright time for First Choice Commercials as it has enabledthem to tap further into global markets, with the localeconomy straining under the pressure of a grave recession. This has been a godsend as the commercial vehicle market

here in Ireland has all but vanished.First Choice Commercials stocks a vast range or trucks

(rigids, mixers, tippers, tractor units, trailers etc.), plant andmachinery (excavators, back-hoes, telehandlers, dumpers, dozers etc.), tractors / agricultural equipment, vans, cars,4x4s, waste trucks and sweepers. All of these are carefullysourced through a global network of contacts and offered atthe keenest rates to users in Ireland and worldwide.

At the forefront of First Choice Commercials since 1999,Mark O’Neill has always been able to identify / predict trendsin the commercial vehicle market and react accordingly. Hebuilt his reputation on buying and selling quality second-handtrucks, plant and machinery nationwide, providing a stellarservice and establishing his company as undoubted leadersin their field.

Since First Choice Commercials was last featured in the

pages of this magazine three or four years ago, a lot haschanged. Not for the first time, they’vehad to assess the lie of the land, takestock of things and plot the pathforward. Not for the first time, theyhave come up with a winning formula!

Commenting on how the landscapehas altered for First ChoiceCommercials over the past fewyears, company founder Mark notes:“We had just moved into a new four-acre site; then the market started tochange beyond recognition. Thegreatest change has been the totalcollapse in the level of sales withinIreland, which has led to the situationwhere the majority of our customersare now based abroad. About 80% ofwhat we sell is now exported.

“This is not just due to the collapse ofthe domestic market but also theemergence of developing markets inAfrica for tippers, mixers, block trucksetc. - which is one of our biggestmarkets now. There is still a small

demand within Ireland, but this has been hammered by thecollapse in construction and also the drop-off in retail, with thesmall operator also being forced out of business. The result isthat there are very few people left to supply and , to behonest, most people are looking to offload equipment thatthey don’t need anymore.

“There are still trucks moving but we have had to diversifyand look further afield. This has meant completely diversifyingthe business to cater for new markets. Australia, for example,is now a big market. We offer complete door-to-door shippingto Australia – and all other countries – and have built verygood relations with shippers. At this stage, we are doingbusiness in most corners of the world.”

The newfound success of First Choice Commercials hasbeen made possible not just by the genesis of the internetand email but also by the solid reputation the company hasforged and its proven knack for sourcing quality equipment ataffordable prices. “One of the keys is to publish very goodpictures of the stock online. Often, we are selling themachinery on the strength of the picture alone. A lot of peopleare buying equipment from us without even seeing itphysically,” Mark continues.

“There is a great deal of trust involved in this and we wouldnever betray that trust. We are as good as our word and weonly ever put up pictures of stock that we actually own andhave in our yard. With the advent of the digital camera andemail, anybody can take a picture and advertise stock thatthey don’t own – often our stock – and secure deposits. Butanything that’s advertised on the First Choice Commercialswebsite is in our yard. Once we upload it, the asset is in ouryard and available for inspection.

“For example, I recently sold two eight-wheel tippers forEUR30,000 each to Fiji, having never met the company. Theycarried out their checks and they were prepared to dobusiness. Shipping to Fiji is almost EUR15,000 per truck butthey are still getting a good deal and these markets areopening more and more.

“Things have come a long way with the internet. I canremember days when I used to take Polaroid pictures andDHL them to the Far East. But the move from print to digitalhas made things a lot easier for everybody. Without theinternet in place, you would literally have to get on board aplane to build relations.

“We’ve had to move with the times. We had diversifiedbefore from trucks to machinery but the vast majority of yellow

Some of the plant and machinery onsale at First Choice Commercials

equipment has now left the country andwe are importing them now to satisfylimited demand in the agriculturalsector. We’re also looking at marketslike Spain, where we have purchasedequipment and then forwarded it on tothe continent without even bringing itinto Ireland.

“We set up the website four years agoand it’s targeting the right markets. Wewill target Google in certain countriesand you do everything you can to bringattention to yourself but the marketmoves very quickly and you have to beon top of your game at all times.

“Also, a number of our formercustomers here in Ireland haveemigrated and set up new ventures inAustralia or Africa but they continue tosource their equipment from usbecause we have regularly met theirrequirements in the past.

“Of course, exporting isn’t somethingnew to First Choice Commercials. Wehave always exported but it hascranked up each year since therecession. Looking to the future, ourgoal is to continue to develop ourexport markets in the short term. At thesame time, we will stick around andcontinue to service the Irish market andbe ready to roll when it bounces back.”

“We never really got too big in with the builders as wefocused more on the agricultural side of things, which hasalways being the main core of our business. And fortunatelyfor us, this is an area that is still bringing in the work.

“In saying that we have like everyone else being affectedby the recession and we have been forced to reduce ourwork force from 60 to 30.”

Doyle's produce many concrete products from their plant inHugginstown, Co Kilkenny, which is based half way betweenKilkenny and Waterford cities, giving them a prime locationto work from.

Not only do Doyle's supply Readymix but they also supplythe Easyflow mix as well. “We are one of the leadingsuppliers of Easyflow Concrete Mix in Ireland. Our versatileConcrete Mix is a crucial part of almost all kinds ofconstruction work. Our Concrete Ready Mix ration can bealtered to suit the customers' individual requirements.

As stated the core of the business iscentred around the agricultural sectorand the produce farm buildings foranimal husbandry and the processingof food crops. The construction of farm

buildings requires several basicmaterials, one of them being Concreteor Concrete Mix, for foundations, milking parlours, cattle slats, silage pits, farm roadways etc.

Once the Concrete is mixed withwater it must be poured within twohours, in order to comply with theEuropean Safety standards directiveEN 206, this is the EU standard thatmust be adhered to for quality andsafety purposes and Denis admits thatall legislation is adhered toometiculously.

“We met the highest standards whenit comes to manufacturing our products, but unfortunately in this industry this isnot the case for all businesses as thereis no certificate for the foundations inhouses. It is an area that I feel stronglyabout and believe that it should bemonitored accordingly, but that is not

the case at the moment.”Doyle Concrete carry out their own

in-house quality standards for EN 206,and in addition are audited once a yearto verify compliance in this importantarea.

The business has expanded inrecent times as sandpit inCastledermot has been added to theportfolio as well as the purchase ofSouth East Concrete in Waterford, which saw nine bottle trucks added tothe fleet.

“Last November, we took over SouthEast Concrete in Waterford city, andas part of that we have also taken onthe builder's yard at Pierce Hire, so weare happy enough with the direction

that the company is heading in.”Doyle Concrete is very much a family

run business and Denis' sister Carolineand brother John are very muchinvolved in the day to day running of thecompany.

For any company to celebrate 40years in business is a remarkableachievement, but it is an even moreamazing feat when they are in theconcrete trade.

Butler’s Buses - for all your travelrequirements

Butler’s Buses Ltd offers a wide range of services tailored to suit your travelrequirements. Managing director Ian Butler explains more about the Co.Cork-based family-run business.

Butler’s Buses Ltd has come a long way since SeanButler set up the company in Cobh, Co. Cork 45years ago.

Now a sprightly 81-year-old who remains one of Butler’smost reliable drivers, Sean handed over the reins in 1993 tohis son Ian who has continued to grow the business byadding to its fleet and expanding its range of services. Ian’sbrothers Kevin and Barry are also involved as director anddriver respectively.

Bulter’s services cater for airport transfers to guided toursand golf holidays. The company prides itself on providing aflexible service customised to suit its customers’ needs.Safety, reliability, comfort, value-for-money and a service thatis second to none is always assured with Butler’s.

“We have never been as busy as this year,” Ian Butler ishappy to report.

“It’s a good complaint to have in the middle of a recession.

There is a great demand for all of our services but inparticular for guided tours. This year we have seen a big jumpin demand for tours that include England, Scotland andWales. Our tours in Ireland and the UK account for about 70per cent of our overall business at this time of the year.

“We’ve introduced a new company logo which has beenutilised on all our vehicles, website and stationary. We havealso introduced a new uniform for all our drivers completewith our new company logo. This has gone a long way tofurther improve our company profile. We have added 6vehicles to our fleet in the past 8 months. In recent months wehave taken delivery of a new 55 seater Volvo touring coachand an executive Mercedes Sprinter tour coach. All in all,2012 has been an exciting year for our company and 2013already looks very promising,” he adds.

Licensed by the Department of Transport for National andInternational carriage of passengers by coach and bus for

hire or reward, Butler’s boasts a fleet of 14 coaches, includingthree 53/55-seaters, five 28/30-seaters, four 16-seaters andtwo six-seater Mercedes Vianos. The larger executivecoaches are all Volvo, while the rest of the fleet are allMercedes.

“All of our vehicles are modern and maintained to thehighest standards. 10 of our coaches are touring specificationwith leather recliners, fully air-conditioned, tables, DVD, WCand large luggage bays. The mix of vehicles in our fleetensures you get the right size and comfort level that best suitsyour budget and requirements.”

All of Butler’s vehicles not only comply, but exceed thestatutory safety and emissions regulations. Each vehicle isthoroughly checked on a daily basis throughout for anypossible defects, which are immediately rectified. The duty ofall of the company’s drivers is to put the safety of passengersand other road users/pedestrians first at all times.

It goes without saying that Butler’s drivers are the best in thebusiness. Between full-time, part-time, relief and seasonal, the company employs 25 drivers who are fully-trained andhighly experienced. Most of the drivers also double as tourguides.

“Without competent, co-operative and courteous drivers, allother efforts in our business are in vain. They have to have agreat relationship with our passengers. They’ve all taken partin six-to-eight week driver touring programmes which we runourselves,” Ian says.

Butler’s endeavour to provide a top-class service at all timesto passengers. The company’s success has been built onrepeat business and referrals. Ian and his staff are constantlylooking at ways to deliver a better and more diverse service.Their latest innovation is to introduce Bus Points for theircustomers as well as allowing their customers’ access to theiraccount online. No other private bus operator in Ireland offersthis kind of service.

“One of the reasons for our success can be attributed to thefact that we embraced the internet at a very early stage. We’ve had a strong online presence since 1998 and that hasenabled us to grow and get the message out to our overseas

customers, while keeping our costs downat the same time. Eighty per cent of thosewho avail of our private tours in Ireland areAmerican. We also attract customers fromCanada, Europe and all over the world.

“We’ve have always placed a strongemphasis on technology over the years. Our complete office can be run from anyremote location with ourbooking/management system being onlineas well as credit card processing, fax, email, etc all accessible from anywhere youhave an internet connection. All ourvehicles are linked in to our FleetMaticsfleet and vehicle tracking system.”

Golf weekends and extended tours areButler’s speciality. They can meetcustomers at the airport and transfer themto their hotel and onwards to any golfcourse in Ireland. Butler’s can help withorganising tee times, accommodation, dining out and entertainment.

A typical tour in Ireland would be golfing, fishing, sightseeing and religiousexcursions. And Butler’s also cater fortransport to and from concerts, sports

END OF LIFE VEHICLES

Anyone who wants to dispose of anEnd of Life vehicle (ELV) needs toknow about new End of Life Vehicleregulations which came into effect forall end-of-life cars from January 1st,2007. These regulations introduce anEU directive aimed at ensuring that oldcars are properly de-polluted anddismantled in a manner that doesn’tpose a risk to the environment or tohuman health.

The regulations place obligations onthe producers (that is to say vehiclemanufacturers/importers), dismantlers /vehicle scrap facilities and the carowner. Facilities dealing with end-of-lifevehicles must meet stringent newenvironmental standards for thecollection, storage and treatment ofend-of-life vehicles. These facilities are

known as authorised treatment facilities(ATFs) and they must hold a validWaste Facility Permit.

Members of the public or motorindustry should only bring their old carto an authorised treatment facility (ATF)which will issue a Certificate ofDestruction, which confirms that thevehicle is being de-polluted anddismantled in an environmentally-safemanner. The facility will then notify theVehicle Registration Unit of theDepartment of the Environment,Heritage and Local Government inShannon, County Clare and thedestruction of the vehicle will be notedin the records of the National VehicleFile.

All intact end-of-life vehicles must beaccepted from the owner of the vehiclefree of charge, who should only dealwith a properly permitted, authorised

treatment facility when getting rid of his/ her old vehicles as these are the onlyones that can issue Certificates ofDestruction.

Currently the Authorised TreatmentFacilities for County Waterford andtheir locations are: Richard Nugent,Ballymartin, Glencairn, Lismore,County Waterford; Patrick Allen,Kilgainy, Clomel, County Waterford;Maurice Lenihan, Carrigeen, Newtown,Kilmacthomas, County Waterford; andJim Moroney, Ballycullane Beg,Dungarvan, County Waterford.

All car sales importers whose vehiclesare likely to become an End of LifeVehicle in Waterford County Council’slocal authority areas should registerwith Waterford County Council’senvironmental section.

Junction 14Mayfield celebratesfirst birthday

Ireland’s newest motorway service area, Junction 14 Mayfield, celebratedone year in business on June 17 last. General Manager Gavin Moranexplains more.

Relax, refuel and recharge at Junction 14 Mayfield, which is the only motorway service station on the M7.

Located at the Monasterevin junction on the country’sbusiest motorway, which links Dublin to Cork, Kerry,Tipperary, Limerick and Clare as well as a large part of themidlands, Junction 14 Mayfield is an independently-ownedmotorway service area that has just completed its first year inbusiness. And what a first 12 months it has been for the Co.Kildare-based operation which was developed by localbusinessmen Donal and Liam Fitzpatrick at a cost of €7

million.“It’s been absolutely hectic, but we’re not complaining,”

Junction 14 Mayfield General Manager Gavin Moran says.“It’s great to be involved with something like this. It’s the

country’s first privately-run service area and is unique in thesense that people are coming from Monasterevin and thesurrounding areas to have their dinners, and companies areholding their meetings here. It’s much more than just aservice area.”

Gavin continues: “We decided to mark out first year inbusiness by having our official opening on June 17 2012 –

exactly a year after we first opened our doors. We had loadsof giveaways and special events during our week-longcelebrations which went down a treat with childrenespecially.”

Junction 14 Mayfield is the only motorway service area inthe country that can be accessed from both sides of themotorway, both north and southbound as it’s situated at a fulljunction. It benefits from advance information signs on the M7motorway in both directions and provides the most up-to-datemotorway service point facilities for the discerning Irishmotorist and trucker.

The objective of Junction 14 Mayfield is to give motorists thechance to relax, recharge and refuel without adding extratravelling time onto their journey. It strives to provide top-classfacilities to its customers while making their stop asconvenient as possible.

The service area boasts 12 state-of-the-art Texacounleaded petrol and diesel pumps, four of which are U Pay

pumps, allowing you to pay at the pump via laser or creditcard, and will take most Irish and European fuel cards. Thereare also four separate pumps for HGVs and Ad Blue refillpoints. The forecourt operates 24/7 for your convenience.

Other facilities on the forecourt include charging points forelectric cars by ESB eCars, two car washers, an ATMmachine, 170 car parking spaces, 25 dedicated truck parkingspaces and five dedicated bus parking spaces. Inside, there’splenty of options for food with Spar Express, Supermacs andInsomnia Coffee Company all having full size food areas. There is ample seating in the restaurant, but if you fancysomething different there’s a covered outdoor seated/picnicarea with a full play zone for the children.

Junction 14 Mayfield also boasts 24-hour pristine toilet

facilities which any five-star hotel wouldbe proud of. In addition, showerfacilities are available to the long-distance traveller. Free Wi-Fi is alsoavailable.

The service area has been such asuccess that it has seen its staff morethan double from 50 to 110 in the spaceof a year. “It’s great to be part of acompany that’s recruiting in thesedifficult economic times,” enthusesGavin, whose background is in retail.

Junction 14 Mayfield prides itself onits friendly and approachable staff, whoare always willing to help with anyrequests you may have, and the factthat all of its franchises are Irish-owned. “That was something Donaland Liam wanted – that everything beIrish,” Gavin adds.

The Fitzpatrick brothers are pillars ofthe business community inMonasterevin, with the family havingtraded successfully in the Co. Kildaretown in the motor, agriculturalmachinery, hardware and forecourtbusinesses since 1954. Donal – whoruns a Spar in Monasterevin – andLiam identified Junction 14 as theperfect destination to give M7 motoristsa break on their journey betweenDublin, Cork and the South West, and

spent several years looking acrossEurope at what was happening in themotorway forecourt industry.

They looked at ways to improvecurrent designs and at how they couldtailor existing ideas to suit the Irishmarket. They spent a lot of timeworking out the ideal distance that thesite should be situated from Dublin, andit was agreed that Monasterevin wasthe perfect location as this was wheremotorists were actually looking for abreak.

Once the site had been identified,Donal and Liamwent to work onmaking their ideas areality.

“The lads did a lotof research in Italyand Germany, andthis is the modelthey felt would bestsuit the Irish market. They’ve set thebenchmark for allfuture service stopsin Ireland and this issomething theyshould becomplimented on,”Gavin concludes.

Workingclosely with Lagan for many years has been McManusBrothers and for this month's edition of Irish Trucker, weprofile the Antrim based company and speak to one of themanaging directors, Danny McManus Snr about thesuccess of the business.

Having worked together for a number of yearspreviously, brothers Danny and Eugene McManusdecided to set up their own business in 1999 and fromtheir headquarters in Randalstown, the company wasestablished.

Specialising in road surfacing, the company's reputationsoon grew as did their portfolio, but Danny admits thattheir connection with the Lagan Group really helped thebusiness grow over the years.

“When a company like the Lagan Group offer you work, you know you must be doing something right as theywon't settle for anything less than the best. Right fromwhen we started we knew that we had to provide the bestservice possible and that is something that we havealways strived to do,” stressed Danny.

The company's mission statement is posted on theirwebsite and it reads: 'Our mission is to be the best partnerfor our customers, suppliers and employees. To realize ourvision, we will strive for profitable growth, operationalexcellence, customer satisfaction and strong brandingposition within the market.' This shows the ethos by whichthe company has grown on and has paved the way for theirsuccess.

McManus Brothers have been involved in some of thebiggest road projects both north and south of the border andthese include the Dublin Port Tunnel, M3, M4 and M6motorways and the M1/A1 north route to name just a few.

“Through our work with Lagan, we have been involved inmany big projects over the years. We would be the largestprovider of asphalt pavers and road rolling equipment inIreland and we also provide the largest manpower teams tothe different divisions in this sector. Whatever the customersrequirements, McManus Brothers are driven to meet theirneeds and exceed their expectations, it all depends on theintensity of the work.”

Not only do McManus Brothers have the man power towork on such prestigious projects, but few companies canrival their equipment either.

Redcastle: for allyour recyclingneedsRedcastle Skip Hire & Recycling is a Donegal based company that has madehuge strides in the industry since its inception in 2005.

Redcastle is also an end oflife treatment facility

In this month's edition of Irish Trucker,we profile Redcastle and speak tocompany MD Hugh Barr about the

success of the business over the pastseven years. First we take a look at howthe company was initially formed.

Hugh revealed that having worked inDublin for a number of years in theconstruction industry, he saw a niche inthe market for skip hire. On returningback to Donegal, he decided to set uphis own business and it's a decision he

has never regretted.“I just thought there was a gap in the

market for a skip hire business inDonegal and went about setting up myown company,” Revealed Hugh. “Weare based in Innisowen and there are

120 skips out on hire.“We operate two trucks for collecting

materials, which are brought back to the yardfor sorting and then sent on to the relevantfacilities for recycling. Since the end of theconstruction boom, the skip hire end of thebusiness is not quite as busy, although insaying that we are still kept going.

“However, we have placed a greateremphasis on developing our end of life vehiclefacility after we obtained the necessary permita few months ago and this is an area we areworking on at the moment.”

An end-of-life vehicle (or ELV) is a car or lightcommercial vehicle which is to be disposed ofby the registered owner (in other words, a caror small van which is to be scrapped). Since 1January 2006, owners of intact end-of-life carsand vans must deposit such vehicles at anappropriately permitted or licensed authorisedtreatment facility (ATF).

“An authorised treatment facility may notcharge for accepting an end-of-life vehicle. When one of these vehicles is deposited at anauthorised treatment facility, the owner willreceive a certificate of destruction,” said John.

“The disposal of end-of-life vehicles iscontrolled becausethey can pose a threatto the environment. This is largely becauseof the hazardousmaterials contained inend-of-life vehicles. These include, forexample, lead acidbatteries, fluidsincluding lubricating oil, coolant, brake fluid, and catalyticconvertors, all of whichmust be disposed ofsafely in order to

prevent pollution.“We operate to the strictest E.U.

technical guidelines as stipulated inEuropean and Council Directive2000/53/EC on End-of-Life Vehicles. We endeavour to ensure vehicles arede-polluted, dismantled and recycledwith the minimum impact on theenvironment.Responsible disposal ofvehicles also reduces the number ofsuch vehicles being abandoned orillegally dumped. In fact, it is estimatedthat in Ireland in 2008 89% of all end-of-life vehicles were illegally disposedof (without CoDs).

All hazardous wastes are removedincluding fuel, coolants, oil, brake fluid, tyres and batteries and they are eitherreused or sent to various licensed sitesfor recycling or disposal.

"We have invested heavily inupgrading the facilities to EUstandards and we have installed adepollution area, we have storagetanks in a bonded wall."

Hugh feels angry over how freelyrogue operators can work in the

industry and he stressed that this is a huge blow to the wastesector.

"Any vehicle that comes in here is monitored throughouteach process and we now have the capabilities of recyclingover 85% of the vehicle, in accordance with EU legislation. We had to invest heavily in order to achieve this and then youhave some so called companies come along and tell you thatthey will dispose of your vehicle, when in fact they take bitsand pieces off them and then just dump them while all fluidsare still in the vehicle."

“We are service-driven and that has always been crucial toour customers. We provide a top-class service and customersreally appreciate that. We tend to deal mainly with small-to-medium-sized companies who are totally dependent onservice. Once you look after those guys, by giving them thelevel of service they expect, they will continue to do businesswith you.

“Because we come from a construction backgroundourselves, we recognised the importance of having a skipdelivered on time and - even more importantly - having ittaken away when it's supposed to be. We provide a servicethat customers can depend on.”

It follows naturally that the company's reputation wasenhanced through positive word of mouth. As news spreadthrough small operators, contractors and subbies thatRedcastle Skip & Recycling was offering a dependable, reliable and prompt skip hire service that was flexible and

affordable, the calls started to flood in.“We put customers first at all times

and we find that pays its own dividends. We have developed through a focus oncustomer needs and what the customerhas dictated to us."

How important is health and safety inthe day-to-day running of the business?“It has really come to the fore over the

past five years and it's an area that wetake very seriously. Health and safetyare paramount and we run under a verystrict code of conduct to ensure theabsolute welfare of our staff, customersand the public at large. Our instructionsto our drivers are quite simple: be ultra-vigilant at all times; if you're not happywith something then just don't do it. If a

bin is overloaded, we won't collect it.You can't take any chances in this lineof work. All the skips are secure; ourvehicles are fully serviced; the driverswear the relevant protective clothingand we have all the relevant permitsand licences in place.”

“We'd call for more rigid enforcementof rules right across the board. Whenyou do it by the book it can befrustrating to see others getting awaywith flaunting the rules. Maybe thepenalties aren't sufficient to deterpeople. We would call for more severedeterrents to prevent illegal operatorsfrom operating within the industry.”

Survival can be difficult in this line ofbusiness. But seven years since itsinception, Redcastle is positivelythriving and it's all down to the excellentlevel of service.

Gary says scrap metal recyclingcompanies face an “on-going battle” withinsurance companies who refuse to payout on claims for certain second handparts. He also bemoans the lack ofsupport offered to them by theGovernment in these difficult economictimes.

“Using second hand parts isn’t an issuewith insurance companies in the UK, butit is here for some reason. The Irish MotorVehicle Recyclers’ Association arefighting our corner in that regard.

“A massive issue facing everyone in themotor trade at present is the rising cost offuel. It’s affecting everyone – ourselvesincluded. The specialists

The haulage industry has come under a lot of pressure in the last couple ofyears as lowering rates and rising fuel costs have left many companiesstruggling to survive during these testing times.

The rigid trucks and drivers, l/r:Mark Carrig, Neil Mullen, Gary

Lynch and David Mullen

Afuel rebate has beensought, but at present, thegovernment seems

unwilling to do anything about thesituation leaving many businessestrying to reduce their overheads asmuch as possible. Unfortunatelyfor some hauliers, they have beenunable to cope with the currentplight, but those with moreexperience seem to have adjustedto the current economic climateand more importantly, they havecontinued to provide the samelevel of service for their customers. One such company is Co Meathbased Neil Mullen Transport and inthis month's edition of IrishTrucker, we profile the company

The company is based inAshbourne, Co. Meath

and have a chat with owner Neil Mullen about the challengingtimes and how he has dealt with them.

Having worked in the haulage industry for eleven years, Neilalong with his wife Susan decided in 1996 to establish their ownbusiness and he admits that it was a big undertaking, one whichwould change their lives forever.

“I had been eleven years with the same company beforehandand having discussed the idea with my wife, we decided toproceed and set up our own business. It was a big step to take, but with the experience I had in the industry, we felt that we couldmake it work,” said Neil.

“We got some work hauling office furniture around the countryand I'm glad to say we are still doing the same work today for thesame customer.” It proved to be the right decision as expansionsoon followed. “Having operated just one truck, we had to addanother one to the fleet after about six months. At that time weneeded another driver and Sean Hayes came to work for us andhe is still with us today.

“We have scaled back slightly and now have five trucks on theroad. The drivers have all been with us a few years now and theyare very reliable and dependable. They have a great relationshipwith the customers and they are the ones dealing with them on adaily basis, so they are representing the company. This is verymuch a family run business and my son David is now thetransport manager.”

Unfortunately, the Mullen family had to deal with some personaltragedy earlier this year when Neil's brother in law AlanBrabazon, who was his former transport manager, passed awayafter battling a long illness.

“Alan's untimely death hit us all very hard and it puts a lot ofthings into perspective.”

The business itself has continued to grow over the years andfrom their premises in Ashbourne Industrial Estate, the companyoffer warehousing for their customers as part of the variousservices provided.

“We are 16 years in business now and I'm pleased with thedirection that the company is heading in. These are challengingtimes for the haulage industry in general. There are manyoverheads to consider and every decision has to be made withthe utmost caution.

“The rise in the price of fuel is probably the most contentiousissue in the industry at the moment, while the rates have dropped

also, which has not helped thesituation at all. Like most hauliers,we have had to tighten our belts, but we are always on the lookoutfor more work and we have plans toexpand the fleet next year. Thisyear we bought a new DAF and weare happy with that so we feel thatwe are expanding all the time.”

Offering an exceptional level ofservice is a key part of the businessand Neil explained that is crucial inrefrigeration work: “We specialise incommercial refrigerationdistribution, and carry out a lot ofwork on behalf of one refrigerationcompany. These are specialisedhandling and time sensitivedeliveries.”

The quality of Neil MullenTransport’s refrigerated work haslead to new contracts in recenttimes.

“We are now transporting medicalequipment to hospitals, which isagain extremely time sensitivework. We are very proud that weare attracting these new customers

thanks to the level of service we offer.”Neil revealed that the maintenance is an

important area of the business that helpsensure that the day to day running of thebusiness goes smoothly. “Maintenance isa key area of the business and one thatwe place a great emphasis on.Customers don't want to be hearingabout a truck breaking down or anyexcuses, it is essential that deliveries aremade on time, because if they are not, they will just take their businesselsewhere and that is something wecannot afford to happen.”

Neil does feel that the economy will getback on its feet in the near future, whichmay see the bank releasing more moneyand this will lead to more investmentbeing made into businesses.

“I do think there will be an upturn in theeconomy over the next couple of years. The banks need to start releasing somemoney for this to happen as companiesneed to invest. We will continue toprovide the high standard of service thatour customers have become accustomedtoo and hopefully we can expand to thelevel that we want. Established in 1990, Stronge Haulage (formerly CRJStronge & Sons) provides a top-class and reliabledelivery and collection service for two of Ireland’s

leading milk producers – Connacht Gold and BallyrashaneCreamery.

Based in Castlederg, Co. Tyrone, the company covers anarea which extends from Ballyrashane’s base in Coleraine,Co. Derry to Connacht Gold’s creamery in Ballaghaderreen,Co. Roscommon. “I used to work for a creamery in Irvinestown, Co.Fermanagh – West Ulster Farmers – before going out on myown and doing milk runs for them,” Cecil recalls.

“I started out with a 10-tonne Scania in 1990 and graduallybuilt up the fleet after that. We had three or four rigids in theearly years, but we’ve now got to the stage where we’reoperating nine tractor units. We have four DAF, three MAN,one Renault and one Volvo.

“We also have four collection tankers of our own, onerefrigerated trailer and three that are owned by ConnachtGold. Our state-of-the-art tankers have specialised stainlesssteel bodies which are heavily insulated and keep milk coldduring transportation,” he adds.

Stronge Haulage collects milk from farms all over Ulster forproduction at the Ballyrashaneand Connacht Gold creameries. In addition, the company has adoor-to-door milk delivery run inCo. Fermanagh and operates alow-loader which transportsheavy machinery.

“We collect milk from farms inDerry, Coleraine, Limavady,Newtownstewart, Castlederg,Fintona and Dromore to namebut a few. The milk is thenbrought to Connacht Goldwhere it is processed into awide variety of dairy products. We also do secondary transportfor Ballyrashane to Virginia, Co.Cavan and Lakeland Dairies inKilleshandra. We collect creamin Fivemiletown, Augher andother places on the returnjourney.”

So how did BallyrashaneCreamery and Connacht Goldbecome Stronge Haulage’s twomain customers? Cecil replies:“West Ulster Farmers wasbought by Bangor Dairies whichin turn was taken over byBallyrashane. Bangor Dairiesretained our services after theybought out West Ulster Farmersand Ballyrashane Creamerystayed loyal to us after theirtakeover of Bangor Dairies.

“We had been doing a run forDonegal Creameries beforethey were taken over byConnacht Gold, so that’s howthat connection came about.

“Ballyrashane and Connacht Gold are two great companiesto work for – not least because you’re always sure of ourmoney from them!” he jokingly remarks.

Employing 150 staff at its Coleraine site, BallyrashaneCreamery has the distinction of being Northern Ireland’soldest creamery. It produces milk for Spar, the HendersonGroup, Marks & Spencer and also for its own Ballyrashanebrand label. As a major manufacturer of butter in NorthernIreland, its butter is sold globally as well as locally to retailoutlets. In recent years the company has been developingspeciality cheeses which are currently supplied to the Greekand Italian markets.

Connacht Gold was established in 2000 following themerger of the North Connacht Farmers’ Co-operative Society(NCF) and Kitoghert Co-Operative Agricultural & DairySociety Ltd. With headquarters in Tubbercurry, Co. Sligo, theco-op employs over 700 staff directly with operationsextending to the UK.

Last year, it purchased Donegal Creameries in deal worthover €20 million. The takeover involved Donegal Creameries’120 million litres milk pool, a liquid milk processing facility atKillygordon and 11 retail stores – nine in Donegal and two inNorthern Ireland.

Connacht Gold has over 14,000 farmer shareholdersthroughout Connacht and Donegal, divided into 24 electoralgroups. Each electoral group elects an advisory committee, which in turn elects the board of directors. Many of its

employees are alsoshareholders and theyhave a separate electoralgroup and advisorycommittee who also elect aboard member.

Connacht Gold is morethan just a co-op. It is adiversified business dealingin Food and Dairy,Ingredients, Agribusiness,Livestock Marketing,Property Management andTimber Processing. The co-op is also involved in a localradio enterprise.

Cecil reveals how risingfuel costs is the biggeststrain on his business.

“The price of diesel iscrazy,” he complains.

“When I first started, diesel was 38p a litre – it’snow £1.25. That’s somechange in 22 years. Whatwill it be like in another fewyears? It’s putting terriblepressure on transportcompanies whose profit

margins are falling all thetime. It’s all about trying tokeep your head abovewater at the moment.”

In conclusion, Cecil paystribute to his customers andstaff who have contributedto his company’s growth.

“We have brilliantcustomers and staff whohave made us the businesswe are today. Ourcustomers are veryimportant to us and that iswhy we will always go outof our way to look afterthem.”

The abnormal loadspecialistsThe abnormal loadspecialists

Transporting abnormal and heavy loads can be a daunting task, but not forthe experts and leading the way in this field of expertise is O'Neill's HeavyHaulage. Operating out of Hospital, Co. Limerick for over 60 years, thisthriving family-run business has set many records in recent years for thelongest, widest and heaviest loads ever seen on Irish roads.

This family run business experience has left its rivals inits wake as the O'Neill's have been providing thesame high quality level of service since 1947.

Specialising in heavy and abnormal loads, O'Neill's HeavyHaulage operate throughout Ireland, the UK and Europe andare well respected in the industry for their reliability andunrivalled service. The experience of their managementteam, combined with the capabilities of their specialisedhaulage equipment, means that O'Neill's can fulfil a widerange of haulage needs and find a cost-effective solution toevery transport problem.

The company covers every aspect of transporting wide andheavy loads and this includes: conducting route surveys, obtaining necessary permits, removal of obstacles(temporary or permanent), liaising with police/Gardaí and theorganisation of third party equipment such as cranes.

For this month's edition of Irish Trucker, we profile theLimerick based company and speak to managing directorJimmy O'Neill about the success of the business.

“The family has been involved in the transportation of heavyhaulage since the late forties and we continue to do so today. We provide a wide range of services to a large customer base

and we have been involved in some major projects acrossIreland and the U.K,” said Jimmy.

Among the heavy haulage projects carried out by thecompany are The Spire in Dublin's O'Connell Street and thetransfer of the sugar-making plant from Carlow to Mallow inCo. Cork. The total weight of the convoy for the latter projectwas in excess of 1,000 tonnes, which is an Irish record.

Jimmy admits that he has seen many changes to theindustry over the years most of which have been good for thehaulage industry, but there is still room for improvement.

“There is a lot more planning needed when moving heavygoods and we would liaise with the Gardaí and the relevantauthorities when carrying out any job. The road network hasalso improved significantly and that has made a hugedifference to our business, but Ireland still needs an easiermethod of applying and obtaining permits. Advance planningin one county recently took five weeks to obtain permits andit’s a total paper chase and nightmare.

“One of the other setbacks at the moment is the price ofdiesel, which has gone through the roof in the last couple ofyears.”

Jimmy revealed that they are involved in the movement ofwind turbines to different locations around the country andthis has helped keep them busy. “We are presently very busytransporting wind turbines and it has been a great help to us,but it also needs a lot more equipment and the turbines aregetting bigger and heavier, the blades are getting longersome at 55 metres, so there is always new equipment beingsourced and purchased. We could be moving them toanywhere in the country. We also have our own towingequipment where the incline is greater than 15 degrees, rather than putting excessive pressure on clutches gearboxesand drive axles, we tow the trucks carrying the windmill loadsup this incline reducing excess pressure on the tractor unitsand also reducing maintenance.

“Then if the wind turbine base is on a decline we attach thetowing vehicle at the rear of the trailer holding back thecomplete load on the decline.

“We now have three of these towing vehicles in use and area great addition in delivering wind turbines; these aretransported to each of the wind turbine location sites.

“We also transport stainless steel vessels from BCD inCharleville who are currently involved in the major expansionof Irish Distillery in Midleton (which are pictured in transit on

the left). We know theimportance of providing thebest service possible and wefeel that is something that wehave always looked to do.

“The experience of ourmanagement team andequipment operators, combined with thecapabilities of our specialisedhaulage equipment meansthat we can fulfil a broadrange of haulage needs andfind a cost effective solutionto every transport problem.”

O'Neill's Heavy Haulagehas an extensive fleet ofspecialised equipment, including six tractor unitsconsisting of Volvo, Scaniaand DAF, and over 30

They arefamiliar with the roads and they have agood understanding and relationshipwith the Gardai who they would bedealing with on a regular basis due tothe nature of the business.”

Pioneers in coachtouringOver the past 55 years, Cronin’s Coaches has forged a glowingreputation as one of Ireland’s premier coach touring service providers. We popped into the company’s Cork HQ and had a chat with managingdirector Derry Cronin and transport, sales and service director NiallCronin about the proud history, current wellbeing and future prospects ofthis stellar family business which operates a fantastic, state-of-the-artfleet of luxury passenger transport vehicles.

Cronin’s Coaches has certainlycome a long way since DermotCronin purchased his first

vehicle back in 1957! The Cork-basedbusiness opened depots in Dublin andNew York before the turn of themillennium and has evolved with thetimes into a thriving group of companiesthat incorporates Dermot Cronin Motorsand Specialised Travel Services.

Recognised primarily for theexceptional level of service provided in

the coach touring industry, Cronin’sCoaches has been honoured with theIrish Tourism Board Award forExcellence and is – quite frankly – afamily business without equal.

Cronin’s Coaches was established inCork city by husband and wife Dermotand Joan Cronin in 1957 and continuesvery much as a family business today –an astonishing 55 years later. Since itsinception, Cronin’s Coaches has beenrecognised as a reliable, quality coach

tour operator. From the word go, the company’s high-

quality transport services were in bigdemand with Irish event managers, conference organisers and thecorporate sector along with Irish andoverseas tour operators and travelagents alike. To meet this demand,Cronin’s Coaches grew organically andsatellite offices were opened in Dublinand New York in 1996.

Cronin’s Coaches maintains a

stunning fleet of deluxe vehicles, ranging fromstate-of-the-art coaches to VIP chauffeur-drivenvans and executive cars. The varied fleet ofmodern vehicles includes private cars, mini vans,30- to 53-seater executive coaches and doubledecker buses, which can provide a full range ofluxury transport solutions including airporttransfers; chauffeur drive; corporate transport; citytours; itinerary planning; group touring; familyevents and tours; transfers to sports events;schools trips and services, etc.

Full-spec, high-view touring coaches from Van

Hool, for example, are the epitome of luxury travel, boastingair-conditioning, generous luggage storage space, PAsystems, cool boxes, tinted glass, toilets and tables uponrequest. These range from 36- to 53-seaters and canaccommodate parties up to 38 - 48 passengers

As of December 2010, Cronin’s Coaches is being overseenby the second generation of the Cronin family: the founders’sons and daughters Derry, Niall, Nora, Anne and Margaretnow oversee the day-to-day running of the company andinvest a personal touch as well as vast experience into dailyoperations.

“We started out in ’57 with a private car and then brought insome vans and minibuses before breaking into the tourismwork during the 1960s,” Derry notes. “We have a fleet of 45vehicles at the moment, primarily Van Hool coaches and afew chauffeur-driven vehicles. We’ve been using Van Hoolsince the early 1980s and the vast majority of our work todaywould be in the coach touring sector.”

Within the Cronin Travel Group is Dermot Cronin Motors inCork, which is a Van Hool agent providing the full range ofsales, service and parts, and Specialised Travel Services, which is an incoming tour operator. “But Cronin’s Coaches isvery much the backbone of the business,” Niall points out.

“The company has grown substantially over the years. Wehave been one of the market leaders in the touring businesssince coach touring took off in the ‘60s, building our businesson the back of quality vehicles and quality drivers and guides. Most of our business would come from overseas, where weprovide coaches for tourists and visitors to the country.”

In terms of catchment area, Cronin’s will go wherever thework is. “The vehicles will only earn money while they are onthe road, so we operate nationwide and also in the UK. Therehas been a spread of tourism nationwide, with most visitorsnow wishing to take in as much of the country as they can,”Derry says.

Tourism, of course, is one of the great products that Irelandcan still offer. “It’s improving,” the MD relates. “And the coachtour market is one of the big performers. There may not bemany iconic attractions in Ireland but as a nation we have agreat deal to offer – we have a history, a culture and aheritage and we also have great people, who are renownedinternationally for their hospitality and friendliness. So there’sbig demand for a sightseeing product that includes meetingthe people. As a product, tourism – like everything else -

started to decline around 2007 butthere has been a small recovery in2011 and again so far in 2012.”

As they also run their own Van Hooldealership, Cronin’s are in an idealposition to maintain and service theirluxury fleet of vehicles in-house. “Wecan handle our own repairs, servicing, parts etc. and we also provide servicingand repairs for some of the other localoperators,” Niall confirms. “We havethe facility, the knowledge and the partsto provide that service.

“Our own fleet would be maintainedfrom the workshop at our HQ here in

Cork, which is a state-of-the-art facility. We’ve been here since 1975, havingpurchased the site to order anddeveloped it further down through theyears as needs require. For example,we’ve recently invested in a new spraybooth. We also have a full-timemechanic working at our Dublin depot.”

Cronin’s have a great reputation forthe presentation and cleanliness oftheir vehicles, which are washed dailyand maintained in immaculatecondition – one of their manyhallmarks!

The company is of massive

importance to the local economy as atotal of 65 people are employedbetween full time and part time. HugeGAA supporters, the Cronins arerenowned for their work with sportsteams and one of their regular clientswould be Cork County Board as theytransfer a succession of all-conqueringRebel County teams to venues allaround the country.

Niall admits that the high price ofdiesel is placing added pressure on thebusiness: “Like everybody else, youhave to soak up a lot of the increasesbecause you have quoted x, y and z for

“There are otherpressures, too. There isadded pressure due to theregistration platelegislation. A good touringcoach could see tenyears. We could only have250,000km on a coachafter five years and mighthave to replace it at a costof EUR300,000, whichshouldn’t be the case.

“Also, the business isseasonal – about 180-200days from May untilSeptember. Adhering todriver hours legislation isplacing us underpressure. Greenhall continuesto impress

However, for those that are longestablished, experience hasplayed a vital part in their

survival as major decisions are takenwith greater care than ever.

It is the nature of the beast to batondown the hatches when faced withadversity, but one Cork based businesshas decided to meet the recessionhead on.

When one talks about longevity andknowledge then look no further thanGreenhall Motors, which has been inbusiness since 1959.

Stocking a full range of new andsecond hand passenger andcommercial Opel vehicles, GreenhallMotors Ltd has continued to move withthe times.

Having started off in Castlecor,

founder Tim O'Shea decided to movethe business to their present locationon the Charleville, road, Buttevant,Mallow in 1982. Since then, thepremises have undergone manytransformations with the latestrefurbishment costing a massive €2million, bringing the business into the21st century.

Asides from the sales and servicedepartments, Greenhall also provide aVTN light goods test centre thatoperates six days a week, making thecompany a one-stop shop for theircustomers.

With a 13 car showroom at theirdisposal, the customers are spoilt forchoice and these days the company isrun by Tim's sons Barry and Tadhg.

For this month's edition of Irish

Trucker, we speak to Barry about thesuccess of the business and profile thecompany in general.

Greenhall Motors opened one of thecountry's first light commercial testcentres in 1982 and this end of thebusiness has seen many changes overthe years.

“Since the RSA has taken over therunning of the test centres, there hasbeen a lot more emphasis onlegislation, while the testers are sent forrefresher courses on an annual basis,”said Barry.

“This end of the business would bevery busy, while the workshop would beanother area that is open six days aweek to suit the customers.”

The success of the business can begauged by the level of awards that they

have won over the years and forthe past three years, GreenhallMotors has been named the OpelDealer of the Year in Ireland.

Giving a voice tovehicle dismantlersThe Irish Motor Vehicles Recyclers’ Association (IMVRA) is fighting thecorner of vehicle dismantlers and scrap metal recycling businessesthroughout the country as Toddy Cuthbert – who is an environmentalconsultant to the body – explains.

Established in 1996, the Irish MotorVehicles Recyclers’ Association(IMVRA) is placing a renewed

emphasis on increasing its membershipand keepings its members up to speedwith the issues which concern them.

Representing authorised vehiclesdismantlers, the IMVRA promotes the safereuse of vehicle parts and supports therecovery of certain waste streams. As wellas being environmentally friendly, itsmembers reduce the need for foreignimports and create local jobs. TheAssociation is a member EGARA, theEuropean Umbrella Association forAutomotive Recyclers.

Earlier this year, the IMVRA enlisted the

services of Cork-based environmentalconsultant Toddy Cuthbert to boost theAssociation’s membership and to lobbythe relevant Government Departments.

“I’m employed as a consultant to theIMVRA,” Toddy explains.

“My brief is to liaise with the Departmentson behalf of our members, to get theirviews across and to report back to them. We’re very supportive of increasedregulation but, at the same time, veryconcerned about how it will be enforced bythe local authorities. There is a long list ofissues affecting our members that need tobe dealt with at any one time.

“In addition, we are putting a strongemphasis on increasing our membership.

We currently have about 40 membersnationwide, but there are 150 authorisedvehicle dismantlers in Ireland. So there’sstill quite a few who have yet to join.”

Toddy is pleased to report that theIMVRA has a good working relationshipwith the Minister for the Environment,Community & Local Government PhilHogan.

“The Minister is very receptive to whatwe have to say. He is always willing tolisten and to take on board any problemsour membership might have withlegislation and new regulations,” Toddyadds.

The IMVRA encourages all authorisedvehicle dismantlers to join their body. After

One man’s scrap isanother man’s goldThe legislation regards the disposal of vehicles has changed dramatically inrecent years and there is plenty of 'red tape' to be adhered too and only acertain number of companies have the necessary permits to do so.

One of these is Lisburn based Temple AutoSalvage, which has been providing a top qualityservice to a large customer base for over forty

years now. The company was initially established in 1970by Hector Neill, who is still very much involved in the dayto day running of the business.

However, his sons Alan and Philip are leading thebusiness into current times and the former speaks to IrishTrucker about the success of the business and theservice provided.

Temple Auto Salvage specialises in vehicle dismantlingand are an approved ELV (end of life) centre. Otherservices include buying and selling damaged cars, vehicle recovery service; dismantling all types of modernvehicles and covered storage for car insurance purposes.

Temple Auto Salvage carry up to 500 vehicles forrecycling at all times, all modern car makes and modelsare held in stock and we should be able to help with most

“We are one of NorthernIreland's leading car salvagedealer's, located near Lisburn,Northern Ireland. It wasestablished over 40n years agoby my Hector Neill and is still afamily run business today. Wehandle all types of motorsalvage, and can delivervehicles, salvaged engines andused car parts throughout theUK and Ireland,” said Alan.

“The face of the industry haschanged a lot over the yearsand there is a lot of legislationinvolved these days, which wefeel is a good thing. However, not everyone is adhering to itand it's certainly not a levelplaying field when these rogueoperators can undercut the likesof us and they seem to begetting away with it.

“As the company hasgone from strength tostrength and theworkforce hasexpanded, we haveadded dismantling ofcars and commercialvehicles to the rangeof services providedboth to the industryand to the generalpublic. We are alsocontracted to severalmajor insurancecompanies fordisposal of autosalvage includingdamaged repairables

and vehicles for dismantling.Keeping pace with the

changes in our industry TempleAuto Salvage is now a fullylicensed ELV centre. “We areone of only a few licensedauthorised treatment facilitiescurrently in operation inNorthern Ireland. A lot of ourwork would be carried outthroughout Northern Ireland aswell as down south, while wewould do a fair bit in Englandand mainland Europe.”

Alan revealed that 100% of thevehicles brought in forscrappage are recycled. “Wehave six recovery trucks on theroad and they would be busybringing vehicles back to thepremises, where they are putthrough the process ofdismantling. We are busyenough at the moment, butwouldn't mind being busier, although the economic climateis dictating the growth of thecompany at the moment, buthopefully it will pick up soon.”

Driving through therecessionMany may wonder as to why people would set up a business in the last threeyears as the current economic recession has the nation in a vice tight grip, but there has been many new companies incorporated into society.

IRISH TRUCKER & LIGHT COMMERCIALS98

One such company is Glantrans InternationalCarriers, which was established two and a halfyears ago, but when you hear about the experience

that the managing directors Kevin O'Callaghan and RichardCashman bring to the table, then it is easy to understandwhy this family run business has been making huge stridesover the past 30 months.

With 30 years' experience, Glantrans International Carriers(GIC) specialises in national and international haulage andis at the cutting edge of its industry. The company providesa competitive haulage service to destinations throughoutIreland, Europe and the UK and is in an ideal location toservice the entire country.

For this month's edition of Irish Trucker, we speak to Kevinand Richard about the success of the company, which isbased in Glanworth, Co Cork and they enlighten us on thedifficulties or running a haulage business in the current

economic climate.“We offer a comprehensive service for all customers

throughout Ireland who are looking for a National orInternational Haulage Service. We are a dynamic forwardthinking company with a personalized hands-on approach,”said Kevin, who we speak to first.

“We aim to deliver a high quality service at all times and wewelcome feedback from customers on how we can improveour service. Our staff are here to provide a 24/7 service toensure that your goods get delivered on time, every time.”

GIC cover all major routes within Ireland, into, and out ofIreland, the United Kingdom and throughout Europe. Theycan provide scheduled transport services collecting anddelivering both ambient and refrigerated goods.

Kevin added: “We would specialise mainly on containerand refrigerated work and two of our biggest customers areLIDL and Dairygold. We would have been involved withthem before the company started and they have continuedto give us some business.

“It is important to supply a top quality service and we feelthat we can do that and once the customers are happy thatis the main thing. In this industry every decision has to bemade with the utmost caution.”

Glantrans is very much a family run business as Kevin'swife Marion, daughter Claire and son Brian, while Richard'sson Joseph and daughter are all involved in the day to dayrunning of the business.

“This is very much a family run business and our childrenare the future of the business. They are all learning the tradeand we have full trust in them to take over when the timecomes.”

Glantrans operates a fleet of eight trucks directly, whilethere are a further six subcontractors working for them also.DAF is the main choice of truck for Kevin and Richard, whichthey feel is the most reliable, while Stephen O'Connor looksafter the maintenance. All trailers are hired in cuts down onthe maintenance for these as Kevin admits it is a struggle tokeep the overheads down.

“By doing our own maintenance, we seem to have a lotless downtime. The overheads are huge in this industry, especially in the last few years when the rising cost of fueland falling rates have really hammered hauliers.

“The fuel situation has reached crisis point, but theGovernment don't seem to be willing to do anything about it.

IRISH TRUCKER & LIGHT COMMERCIALS 99

The Glantrans fleet setsoff on more runs

The fleet is kept inpristine condition

IRHA President Eoin Gavin is doing his best and has met withMinisters on numerous occasions, but it just seems as if he'sbanging his head against a brick wall. Something needs to bedone about the situation and it needs to be done soonerrather than later.”

From their premises in Watergrasshill Park, Kevin andRichard know that this is a precarious time in the economyand Richard revealed that when new business comesthrough the door, it is met with an air of caution.

“We would carry out background checks on all companiesseeking us to do work for them. This is a formality for allbusinesses at the moment as we have to be very consciousof the cash flow and margins have to be correct. This is a verycompetitive environment to be involved in as the haulageindustry is connected to every sector.”

Richard feels that managementaccountants like himself have a big roleto play in the future of the economy.

“Management accountants havecertainly a massive part in the futuresuccess of any business, because onewrong decision could provedetrimental. In fairness, there has beensome growth in the business over thelast 18 months, and we hope tocontinue that trend for the foreseeablefuture.

“We have a strong bond with ourcustomer base and we must ensure toprovide them with the service that theyhave become accustomed too over thelast few years and we thank them forthat. We would also like to thank Staceyand Connor Holly for supplyingexcellent photographs.”

One cool customerEstablished as an owner-driver company in 1996, Aidan Doherty TransportLtd has been specialising in refrigerated transport for over a decade.

Based in Tipperary town, whichis within easy reach of the citiesof Limerick, Cork and

Waterford, the company is run byhusband-and-wife Aidan and BredaDoherty who have accumulated awealth of experience in the transportindustry. Breda recently took time outfrom her busy schedule to give us aninsight into Aidan Doherty Transport.

“We originally transported dry goodsbefore deciding to concentrateexclusively on refrigerated transportabout 10 years ago,” she explains.

“It was a big decision which thankfullyhas paid off. We offer cold storage fornationwide distribution. We are aleading name within the business andhave very good customers who havegiven us great support over the years.”

Aidan Doherty Transport’s reputationfor reliability, value-for-money andexcellence has seen its customer-baseexpand to include retail giants Lidl andAldi as well as Commercial MushroomProducts in Monaghan. The company’sstate-of-the-art facilities and modernfleet enables it to meet a wide range ofcustomer needs.

“We have an excellent workingrelationship with our customers. We areproud to be associated with both Lidland Aldi, who are now recognised astwo of the biggest retailers in thecountry. We transport chilled, frozenand ambient products from Lidl’sDistribution Centre’s in Charleville, Co.Cork and Mullingar, Co. Westmeath totheir stores around the country. And thesame goes for Aldi whose mainDistribution Centre is in Naas, Co.Kildare.”

Aidan Doherty Transport boasts amodern fleet of high-specificationtemperature controlled vehicles whichprovide the necessary conditions toensure the safe arrival of even the most

sensitive of cargoes. The company, whose fleet colour is blue and white, has invested heavily over the years inits trucks and trailers as Bredaexplains:

“We have a fleet of 12 tractor unitsand 12 trailers which are immaculatelykept and maintained to the higheststandards. All our vehicles areequipped with air suspension, ensuringbest load care and driver comfort. Ourtrucks are mainly DAF, although we dohave a couple of Ivecos and one Volvo. In addition, our trucks and trailers arecleaned inside and out before everyconsignment collection.

“While we are large enough to providea professional service, we are alsosmall enough to adapt to the specificneeds of your logistical requirements. We are dedicated to providing a trulyprofessional service to all of ourcustomers.”

The company’s trailers comprisearticulated curtainsiders, low-loadersand temperature controlled units. Thelatter’s internal loading length andloading width is 13.6 metres and 2.5metres respectively. Maximum payloadweight is up to 24 tonnes.

Of the 21 staff employed by AidanDoherty Transport, 15 are drivers. Thecompany has its own in-housemechanic, who carries out all repairsand maintenance work on its DAF fleet, and also offers a carwash service to thegeneral public. Volvo repairs arereferred to McCarthy Commercials inWatergrasshill, Co. Cork, while DDennehy Ltd in Carrigtwohill, Co. Corkcaters for Aidan Doherty’s Ivecorepairs.

“We have been dealing with DennehyTrucks and McCarthy Commercials formany years and have always foundthem to be extremely courteous andhelpful. The fact that our own mechanic

knows DAF inside-out means that wedon’t have to send our DAF truckselsewhere for repairs and helps to keepour costs down.”

While Aidan Doherty Transport hasn’tbeen immune from the recession orrising fuel costs, Breda is happy toreport that the company is coping wellin the circumstances.

“Business is good, thank God. Wecan’t complain. When you have goodcustomers like we have, you arealways sure of your money. Our aim isto look after their needs at all times andto ensure that we are doing everythingthe way they want it done,” she says.

“The cost of diesel is a huge issue forall transport companies, but we arelucky in the sense that we have asurcharge arrangement in place withLidl and Aldi which eases the burdensomewhat.”

In conclusion, Breda pays to tribute tothe staff who have contributed to thecompany’s growth and success overthe past 16 years.

“I have to say we have some brilliantpeople working for us. Every one ofthem has played their part in getting usto where we are today. This business isall about giving a good service andkeeping your customers happy, and ourstaff go out of their way to ensure thoserequirements are met.”

Ireland can offer from

leading brands as well as

our brands. About 95% of

our business would in

truck parts, while trailer

parts make up the

remaining 5%.”

Trade Counter Holdings

have extended their client

portfolio to the far corners

of the earth and their

exports make up the

majority of the business in

the current economic

climate.

“We have developed a

large customer base over

the years, many of who

have remained with us. In

this industry, it is essential

to maintain the level of

customers that we have

acquired and ensure that

they are happy with the

service that we provide.”

Having started the

business in the eighties at

the height of the last

recession, Eamon is well

placed to compare the two

economies.

“The main difference

between the two

recessions is that now the

banks are bust, whereas in

the eighties they weren't.

The country is now far

more advanced

infrastructure wise and it

has completed changed,

so it is hard to compare the

two periods, but I certainly

feel that any business that

went through such a time

is well equipped to deal

with the current problems.

“It is actually remarkable

how businesses have held

up in the current economic

climate and they deserve

great credit for doing so as

everyone's turnover has

been hit hard.

“The domestic market is

not near as strong as it use

to be and we are looking to

expand our exports, which we have

been doing for the past number of

years.

“It is going to be a hard road ahead for

all businesses and we will be no

different. We have to continue working

hard and ensuring that the customer

get what they want,

when they want it.”

Trade Counter

Holdings offer a same

day deliver service in

their locality, using five

of their own vehicles to

deliver parts, while in

the U.K, they use an

efficient courier service

to ensure that packages

get to their customers

on time.

“We would stock

thousands of parts here

and anything that is not

can be shipped in very

quickly, so customers

don't have too wait too

long for their deliveries.”

In these testing times,

Eamon could be

forgiven for focusing on

holding on to his current

customers and although

that is high on the list of

priorities; expansion is

not out of the question

either.

“We would be looking

to expand our stock

within the main fleets

and increase our

customer base. In this industry, you

cannot afford to rest on your laurels and

that is something that we certainly won't

be doing. There is a lot of work to be

done in order to get this country back

on its feet again, but I do think that we

will get there.”

Team spiritTeam spirit

A great team spirit permeates every nook and cranny ofThomas Crilly Transport, a company which finds itselfat its optimum size some six years after its inception.Irish Trucker visited the Camlough base and had a chatwith founder / proprietor Thomas Crilly.

Afamily-run transportcompany based inCamlough, County

Armagh, Thomas CrillyTransport was established in2006 and has since gonefrom strength to strength. From humble beginnings, thecompany has grown steadilyover the past six years, todayoperating a fleet of fivevehicles, mainly deliveringbread to retailers nationwideon behalf of Irwin’s Bakery.

For eponymous founderThomas Crilly, the business isvery much a labour of love. Atrue trucker in every sense of

At the Mourne Truck Run, l/r: NoelWatters, Jody Crilly and Tom Crilly

the word, Thomas has always had a deep love of trucks andhaulage. Even when he was working in a completely differentsector, Thomas always felt the lure of lorries and the genesisof Thomas Crilly Transport was almost inevitable.

Reflecting on how the company came about, the manhimself notes: “I was a civil servant working with theDepartment of Agriculture as an animal health and welfareinspector. But I was always more interested in the lorries thanthe cattle.

“So I got my licence and did a bit of part-time work beforebuying my first lorry – an 85 CF DAF – in 2006. I suppose Iwas hooked at that stage. Irwin’s Bakery was my maincustomer at the time and still is today.”

At present, Thomas oversees a mixed bag of articscomprising two Renaults, a DAF, a Scania and a Volvo. Whenit comes to replacing a vehicle or bringing in a new one, theCamlough man has a very simple rule of thumb that will befamiliar to his peers:

“I will opt for whatever represents best value for money atthe time. That policy is serving me well and every lorry in thefleet is performing well at the moment. We keep them in goodnick and a local mechanic – David Lowry Truck Repairs - inNewry looks after all the servicing and maintenance etc. forme.”

Regarding the type of work done, Thomas continues: “Wedeliver bread nationwide for Irwin’s Bakery. We also try todouble-shift the lorries as much as possible to avoid emptyruns, doing some work for European Containers and LoaneTransport in Kesh, working out of Warrenpoint. The reality ofthe way things are is that you have to get as much out of eachlorry as possible.”

A hands-on owner who gets behind the wheel himself on adaily basis, Thomas also provides gainful employment to sixother drivers. The work is now restricted to within the island ofIreland. “I used to go to the UK on traction jobs but I stoppedthat as it doesn’t pay. There’s no point taking on work just forthe sake of it.”

Irwin’s Bakery is Northern Ireland’s largest independentbakery, producing a wide range of products that are soldunder different brands including Irwin’s, Rankin Selection,Nutty Krust and Howell Handmade. The main bakery hub islocated in Portadown and Thomas Crilly Transport has a yardrented nearby.

Needless to say, in this particular line of work, the hours arewhat one might term unsocial:

“You start at midnight,” Thomas notes. “The driver loads thetrailers and will typically start deliveries at around 2am,finishing up at around 7am or 8am, which leaves the lorry freefor the rest of the day.”

and they had Prince Charles and hiswife Camilla as visitors as part of thatcelebration. As long as the bakery isgoing well, then Thomas is happy:“We’re doing okay. Some days arebusier than others. The bread is verysteady and the container work is alsosteady but the traction work is up anddown.”

It’s a tough climate, with pressure onhauliers like never before: “Diesel andinsurance costs are very high and it’sdifficult to keep absorbing theseincreases. Margins are being squeezedall the time by things that are outsidemy control. All we can do is get on withit and hope that the economic situationimproves.

“I was up to nine lorries at one stagebut had to cut the fleet back to fivebecause you have to keep youroverheads down and there’s no choiceonly to run a very lean business. That’s

where we areat themoment.”

As for thefuture: “Wehave nospecific plansto do anythingnew but at thesame time allour options areo p e n .Depending onthe job and therate, I wouldcertainly beopen to suggestions. The plan is prettysimple – to survive!

“I’m reasonably confident that we cankeep ticking over. Unless somethingdisastrous happens, we have all ourbases covered.”

Thomas Crilly Transport provides an

excellent service every day, seven daysper week. “We work 364 days of theyear. The only day off we have isChristmas. We’ve had our ups anddowns but in general the business hasgone well and we provide the bestservice we can.

“It’s all about service at the end of theday. If you get your customer’sproducts delivered promptly and safely, then they will be happy. Twenty minutesmeans a lot in the bakery industry soyou have to make sure the deliverarrives on time every time. To be fair, Ihave a great team around me and theyall give 100%. They’re a good team oflads. It took a few years to get them butwe’re happy now. Small is beautiful.

“The same applies to the business ingeneral. It took a while to get here butit’s all clicked into place now and we’rein a strong position. We had to takecontrol of our costs and my mechanicalso provides an excellent service. We’re all in this together and we’relooking forward to continued success.”
